I love the groove of this album! Heavy Glam-Rock mixed with Soul and Disco-Funk. I never heard a groove like this.
    P.S.
I love the song "Go to Zero".

This was short and sweet, but so was the album, kinda. Overall, it’s not my favorite. When I got the album, I played the hell out of it and liked it. I don’t think I truly loved it. Now, I don’t really care for it. “Some Like It Hot” is ok because my local radio station overplayed it. “Bang a Gong” & “Murderess” are my favorites. I love Robert Palmer. I saw him live while supporting his “Riptide” album. He played some Power Station stuff. I cannot remember which songs though. I had much rather listen to Arcadia than Power Station. Thanks for the video.
I’m on the fence with Andy. I can take him or leave him.
    I don’t watch AHS.

"Bang A Gong" and "Murderess" are my favorites too. "Hot" was way overplayed on the radio.

Thanks Red Rug for another great review.. overall I liked the album only because of 3 songs..rest of it sound like fillers….Arcadia’s album was best in class on every level (songs, artwork) and the three members perfectly captured the atmosphere they were after unlike here where the reason the two members created power station never seems to be realised (heavy guitars etc)

Tony Thompson's band Chic is not pronounced Chick. It is pronounced SHEEK. John did not play the bass solo on "Get It On". Bernard Edwards is playing it. On the two disc special release, there is an addtional DVD that shows the Power Station in the studio and Edwards is working his magic on the bass. Thirty-six years after its release, I still enjoy playing air drums to this album. Duran Duran's Roger Taylor conributes the treated octobans that you hear in the chorus of "Some Like it Hot".

I actually know how to pronounce it I just don’t because I feel dumb saying it that way. And it’s funny how the only bass on the entire album that stands out is one played by Bernard Edwards and not John Taylor. Disappointing

I was going to mention the same facts about Bernard and John from the DVD. Good job investigating these facts. I'm a die hard Duranie and own a rare and extensive collection of their music including their cd long boxes and the Milton Bradley board game. I'm surprised they packaged that deluxe set in a single jewel case. Arcadia was my favorite of the two groups. Can't wait for Future Past this week

😂🤣 No matter how he pronounces it (sorry, I did laugh when he said "chick"), he always does a great job with his videos and I enjoy watching them and getting his observations on these songs/albums. Required viewing!

Power station is a good album but it failed to grab it's audience like Arcadia. Harvest for the world is a awesome track. How can you say that Andy's vocals don't belong there? He gives such a powerful performance on that song. All in all try to review the later album Living in Fear. It's a better album than the first.

This album suffers from what was a very common problem in the mid to late '80s. It's referred to as 'cocaine production'. It's not actually a joke - it has to do with producing music under the influence of heavy cocaine results in the bass being mixed out and the treble being mixed up. It's why, as you said, an album that was put together by a bassist you can't really hear the bassist play on the record. I would love for a modern remastering of this album. I do believe it would really, really flush out the sound.

Power Station is ok for the two singles Some Like It Hot and Get It On but past that not much replay value for me and it’s left collecting dust to be honest.
    That’s it then Brian…
Time for Arcadia So Red The Rose 🌹
You threw a curve ball with Arena wasn’t expecting a video on that but think your leaving the best to last maybe?
Will be interesting to hear your take on it as for me it’s faultless and up there with Rio 👊👍

Dude, I agreed with you many times in the past... this time I don't, at all. The only complaint I have about this album is that it's too short. I definitely like So Red The Rose better, but this Power Station album is also very good. Mr. Tony Tompson is fantastic, Andy is a revelation as a heavy rock guitarist and Mr. Robert Palmer (whom I didn't know even though he was by then a seasoned singer/songwriter) is an impressive presence. Yes, perhaps, John Taylor's bass is not as prominent as fans would have expected, but this hard rock format usually features straighter bass lines. Still, JT manages to squeeze in a few luxuries that add a certain European flair to the mix.
In short: a crucial album for the mid 80's.

This album was very good for what it was- members of a few groups, who had no intentions of making anything permanent, getting together & making an album. I liked Get it On better than T-Rex original. Some Like it Hot would've been better with a bit more or at least a stronger presence from Andy. A cpl other songs were good, the rest were OK, not a single song that I hated (rare for me, esp back then). It definitely needed more Andy/stronger rock sound. I agree with a previous comment that Bernard Edwards should NOT have produced this, maybe 2-3 tracks, that's it. Mutt Lange (or comparable) should have done the rest. I believe an edgier, harder rock sound would have been the result- a better one at that. And at least 2 more songs added. So as always, for the most part, I agree with you!! Take care everyone 🎶❤

I saw Power Station in concert. It was one of my first concerts ever. When they toured, Robert Palmer wasn’t with them. Michael DesBarres toured with them. Duran Duran is my favorite band ever. I play piano and love to do a Duran cover! I like PS and their album, but I definitely think So Red The Rose was a better album. Just my opinion.

I liked it, but I liked "We Fight for Love" and felt that should have been on the album (Yes, I know it was on the reissue/remastered version). I agree this album feels uneven, but I wore it out back in the day. Disagree on "Harvest". I prefer the Power Station version of "Get It On" over the original. Loved that one! Not a fan of "Go to Zero". Oh -- and have I said I'm an ANDY fan lately? Muahahahaha!!

I've always had mixed feelings about this album, I bought a mint copy in vynil in the summer of '92 and the only songs I knew back then were the 2 singles "Get it on" wich I consider even better than the original one by T-Rex and "Some like it hot". When I heard the rest of the album I was a beat skeptical since it sounds too much Robert Palmer and not so much DD. I remember that in the same period of 1992 I bought a 2nd hand copy of the JT singles "I Do What I Do" wich was in the soubdtrack of the film "9 weeks and half" and I loved immediately although in 1992 the song was around since a while. If the Power Station album had more "I do what I do" vibes would have been much more into my tastes but just. Obviously IMHO and with all due respect 👌

are you crazy GO TO ZERO is the foundation of POWER STATION SOUND listen to the drums the bass the horns the guitar solo and how flawless the rhythm section that is so tight and lets not forget how heavy it is

I always wondering why Andy Tailor is not on modern DD, I'm not following him, never did, but I recently he's popping on my YT feed and he's still doing old DD covers. I feel is like he's the "black sheep" here?. This albun in particular has 1-2 song....when Arcadia is on of the best "Duran Duran " album ever made.

To be honest with you, even though I think The Power Station’s debut is good not great I think I can zero in on the problem with the album in two words..Bernard Edwards. I think he’s work with Chic is phenomenal but in the context of producing a rock record.. nah! The stand out on the PS album are vocals and drums. If the album were produced by a Mutt Lange or a Rick Rubin, 2 exemplary rock producers at the time the album and songs would’ve been much more impactful

And I still listen to the first Powerstation album several times a year, especially in the summer. I love Still In Your Heart. It has a strong Roxy vibe to me. Both side projects have aged incredibly well and sound great to this day.

Great review Brian. For me there’s no comparison between Arcadia & Power Station… I’m team Arcadia all the way! So Red the Rose is a masterpiece! Power Station has 3 strong original compositions (Some Like it Hot, Murderess, and Still in your Heart). 2 covers and few completely mediocre to sub average songs.

I don't like it very much. I find the imprint of Robert Palmer too strong. Andy was only okay with the Durans. It was like putting salt on a cake and making it even better. Of this album except Harvest for the world, which is also a cover, but it can be a Duran song. Andy is best in "Queen of Asylum" and "I want you more" of Astronaut album (probably, in my theory ahah) that seems taken from Seven tiger's album.. I find Arcadia's "the flame"much better than Power Station's album

    This album is amazing.
    All the songs are good.
Also, the band name is not "chick" it's "chic" pronounced "sheek."
No one was escaping DD, they were John and Andy fans supporting them and enjoying more music by them.
I think their version of "bang a gong" was better than the original.
