Hi Kaye! I take 2 green blades of lemongrass and wrap them around my fingers into a circle like a wreath. I spiral the ends of the leaf blade around the wreath to keep it all together and tuck in the ends so it won't unravel. I make the wreath small enough to fit in a mug. I let the wreaths sit on the counter to dry and then store them in a mason jar. Toss a dried lemongrass wreath into a mug, add hot water, steep, and you have a perfect cup of lemongrass tea!
I loved this inteview,i was very surprized when Granny said she never heard of tomato cobbler, oh i just love it. I have never made it myself, but my mom and two sisters made it in past years. Its basically stewed tomatoes, bread that is two or three days old and a little sugar and maybe a stick or two of butter. Stirred all up together and baked in the oven on theee fifty. It is really good when someone can make it right. You can even add onions if you like.🙏❤️🙂
This comment was for Mrs Tipper on celebrating Applatchia, I don't know how it got on your page, yours was about something totally different. This is so funny. I have had a cell phone for about four years, and I still don't know much about what I am doing with it. I am so sorry. I do enjoy your content. At one time in my life I really did enjoy doing flowers and one or two vegetables in the garden, there was nothing more exciting than getting the dirt under my nails.🙏❤️🙂
Wow that's a lot of lemongrass for tea! Love your hibiscus too. Hope you are not in the path of the coming hurricane dumping lots of rain on everyone from Florida thru the Ohio Valley in coming days but prepare as you can. Sending prayers to all those getting ready and hope for minimal damage. Stay safe everyone..
My new in-ground patch of veggies has a few sprouts up. Am using it as edible cover crop and yes, it is not a large space. Will be bantam cornfield or melon field next spring if all goes well. I also am going to hopefully enjoy produce. Oh and my 3 tomato fruits continue to grow so that is good in spite of it being 100 degrees F. today. Glad you have that Lemongrass and the hibiscus for teas and other herbal uses. Nifty! Be encouraged Kaye. Get ready for stormy weather possible remnants of Hurricane Helene - bring in light things that could fly in 30 mph winds and rains (uncertain if it will affect you but weather forecast does indicate a turn to the W. as it comes into the central part of your state).
Hello Kaye. Excited to learn more about your garden. Angie and her husband have been friends of my for about 18 years. I was in Iraq with her husband. I have a passion for gardens and cooking. You came highly recommended. 👍👍😊😊
Beautiful lemon grass. Love that plant and they do grow big. The smell is amazing. It is good as a seasoning with sautéed beef over rice. Glad to see you are making extra hibiscus plants. Such great color on the property. It would be good to plant those all over like a hedge of color. Cheers.
The only problem is they die back. The hedge would have to be replanted each year most likely. I tried two years in a row to save the beautiful ones I had growing on the terraces, cut them back and mulched heavily, but they didn't come back.
@@Latebloomershow I found one in Dash of Color and Spice (online) for Thai Lemongrass 🍛 Curry. It looks really wonderful and a great opportunity to use your orange Thai chilies, also. I wanna make it now! Lol! I think you pound the lemongrass root into a paste and scrape away a tablespoon or so to blend into the sauce... mmmm!
I love lemongrass, and I keep some in my freezer. Sadly it's not quite hardy enough to survive the Winter here, so I have to start anew each season. Overwintering yielded a very weak plant come Spring, so it just makes more sense to start over.
You have a veritable jungle of very happy plants, Kaye! It must be the shade all around your property because my plants just look beat up from the Sun.Absolutely love the tutorial on Lemongrass. Keep an eye out on wind and rain from Helene!
@Latebloomershow I am in Florida panhandle... just west of Helene's path... so exhausted from evacuation prep, and now relaxing 😌 since we were not evacuated. I love to see your vids - to enjoy!
It was funny to watch Spot smack his sister just after the 13:00 minute mark. I’m noticing that the one cat we saw (not Spot) can’t remember her name but I noted her markings on her tail and the underside (if she was standing vertical e) of her back legs look to be that she was “dipped” into something, tail & back legs first! Lovely video Kaye! ✌🏻
New comer referred by Angie (lemon grass). Enjoyed your video looking forward to more. Been friends with Angie for over 20 years and she's the ultimate homesteader.
Hello darlin. I saw lemongrass & had to share my lemongrass story. Lemon grass is used in Brazil extensively including putting it in fresh, to the country's national alcohol, Kashasa. Tea, lemonade, seasoning, & more. Love your work & you. Stay well. 💜☮️☯️💪⚖️🌎🇺🇲
Wow! What a great video, Kaye! Thank you for showing us how you deal with the lemongrass! I have never grown it because I wasn't sure what I would do with it. I'd love to see and/or hear all the things you do with yours. And I have a question about your Cranberry Hibiscus: would your methods of pruning work with a Roselle? I want to save mine for next year somehow, partly because it never bloomed 😢 My thought is that bringing it inside or protecting it with a frost cover (or other) would give it a head start on growth next year, and help it to bloom. I grew several from seeds, but only two survived the sunburn. And only one is a big bush, and very healthy.
Seriously, lemongrass is wonderful to grow even if you don't consume or use it. It offers a lovely scent in the garden, especially important in small compact gardens. You may recall I had a huge bush in my LA garden and really had to keep cutting it back. Don't do what I did in this video, too drastic, but give Roselle a good pruning, so it doesn't have so much plant to support inside. Shave down the rootball a bit, so you can get it in a reasonable size pot. See if it makes this transition and if so, it should live inside. My cranberry hibiscus lived in the garage all winter though it did get aphids. I forget your zone, but frost cover did not save my roselle last year and I really tried. Zone 7b It may bloom inside, so don't prune off all ends of branches. My cranberry hibiscus did. I have not tried bringing Roselle inside.
I also grew some lemongrass, but it is very small. Was wondering why you trim off the couple inches near the bottom of the grass. Is it really too tough to cut up? Is it dirty? Or does not have any flavor? Thank you for showing me how to process this and try to replant the rootball. Gonna try that!! Your cats are so silly and cute!!
I guess I didn't have to cut it off, but I wanted to clean it up. And I had so much I didn't care. And it was a little dirty, but I'm sure you don't have to cut more than a half inch.
Wow, you threw away the best part of the lemon grass, the bottom part. Not sure if you like fried fish. You can mince the bottom part of the lemon grass into fine ground pieces, blend it with salt and hot pepper. Spread the mixture onto the fish evenly and let it sit for few hours. Fry the marinated salted lemon grass fish. Eat it with fresh cool cucumber or cool vegetable and starch.
It's actually very hard to film at night. Camera doesn't pick anything up, unless you have streetlights or something. It's dark out here in the country.

Well, I've got canned tomatoes (no more fresh), so I could give this a try. Sounds good!

The root portions are good for cooking. The leaves for tea.
Can you suggest a recipe for the root?

I was looking for a vid from you today! I need to harvest my lemongrass also. Good to see how you did it. 😊
You can tie a few fresh pieces into little bundles and pour boiling water over for tea. I haven't really tried that yet.

The lemongrass out of the pot looks like a cow's udder. Maybe you should try "milking" it. It might put out lemon juice!
