We grow Lemongrass because my mother wants to cook with it, but I've found a better substitute because we live in Australia. Lemon Myrtle has a delicious lemongrass-like flavour, and aroma of lemon verbena. Lemon Myrtle has one of the highest and most pure sources of Citral, 90%-95%, compared to oranges 2%-5%, lemons 6%-9% and lemongrass 65%-85%. We use the Lemon Myrtle leaves instead of having to dig up Lemongrass roots.
I can’t thank you enough for this post. I live in an apartment building decided to grow some lemon grass for the first time in my life on my balcony. I harvested them. I washed them and here is where I went wrong. I thought I dried it enough stored it in a glass container, and today I looked at it and it almost had a mold, thank goodness it wasn’t. But now since you’ve taught me to pasteurize, I will do better 😅.

Yes, it is possible to use a microwave oven if the temperature can be set to a low limit. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye on it and testing out a little bit of lemongrass before making the whole batch because you can burn the lemongrass if the temperature is too hot.

Do you use this same pasteurization method and temperature for other medicinal herbs/flowers as well? A similar thing happened to me with a caterpillar in my plantain 😂

Hey thanks so much for this video! I had a question. I tried storing lemongrass after drying them in the sun for 2-3 days, as you've shared. Once, I stored them for a couple of days I could see some black fungal growth on them. Could you suggest some workaround or if you've faced anything like this?
Thanks so much for your kind words. It looks like it wasn’t dry enough. Did the lemongrass leaves snap when broken? It was either the lemongrass itself or the container that had moisture and caused the fungus. The only way to prevent it would be to dry the lemongrass thoroughly and then pack it in a dry sterilized container. There is not much you can do once it has fungus and it will need to be discarded.

Absolutely! It can be easily blended to make it into a powder if you use it that way. I usually use in my teas especially my ginger lemongrass chai so I prefer it a little larger so it is easier to filter out. How do you use in powder form?

If we need to wear gloves when cutting it.. Why do we see you wrapping it for storing with no gloves? Did you do something first to remove the prickles
That’s a great question and I would recommend having gloves while wrapping it too. I just cannot wrap the leaves with gloves on because I find them too cumbersome. I did get 2 cuts though. Lol 😂 Also, there is no way to remove the sharpness as the edge of the leaf is sharp

@manomaym7144 it might be overwatered and the roots might have rotted. You can take the plant out of the soil and clean it. See if it is alive and if so, plant it in new soil. If the roots are decomposed, it might not make it. Try it out and I hope it helps.

Yes, I used the same pasteurization method on my oregano, lavender, and calendula. It works really well.

Can it be blended in a blender after u dried it?
Absolutely! It can be easily blended to make it into a powder if you use it that way. I usually use in my teas especially my ginger lemongrass chai so I prefer it a little larger so it is easier to filter out. How do you use in powder form?

How can I get LARGE Lemongrass so it's the size the Restaurants use in their recipes? My plant only seems to produce these skinny stalks.
Are you fertilizing it? I fertilize mine twice a year with a slow release organic fertilizer and then intermittently with a foliar spray of kelp.

You have to rub from the bottom up. If you rub from top to bottom that's when you will literally get cut up

I would recommend looking at the soil condition. Is it too dry? too wet? Do you see any visible signs of disease?
