Fair play to Terry Chimes for giving such a warm shout-out to Topper. Terry always was a gentleman
This is a classy acceptance. The Clash had class.
BluesLicks101 Real Class. Love Mick giving a shout out to the Pistols too, at the end
Yawn. Only Joe wasn’t and he was living in squats for years.
Also, people love to point out that his dad was a diplomat but they never add that his dad also grew up in an orphanage in India.
Selectivity is a wonderful escape clause to push any agenda.
@@markporter1901 you're a Darwinist...
If Joe or Headon were there they would have thanked Mickey Dread, without him there would have been only half of their success
I remember my father and I watched this together. It was the first time I ever really saw him cry. He was heartbroken that Joe wasn’t there, and I never really understood his love for Joe until now. That man made quite the impact.
My guess is that Joe wouldn't have gone. He broke up the band when they were on the cusp of major mainstream success. Huge offers were on the table. He was not interested in the fame nor the money.
Incredible band the Clash, one of the greatest live bands I ever saw. RIP Joe, a legend forever!
The Clash...still one of the bands that really matter.
The ONLY band that mattered.
@@zargonthemagnificent330 not true
@@realsinisterminister Sigh. It's always a bit shit when you have to explain good jokes to people who don't get them. Still, I'm nothing if not forgiving, so I won't bother unless you ask.
@@zargonthemagnificent330 I didn't see the joke?I know they used to call themselves that if it's sarcasim I get it completely ....somtimes in comments its hard to pick up on it
@@zargonthemagnificent330 I'm not joking.
Miss you Joe...never met you in person, but your music and message has inspired me to be a better person. Know your rights.
Paul Simonon has so much style. Love Mick too. Miss you Joe Strummer.
It's just one of those sad realities that Joe Strummer died right before this induction. He was up for playing and they probably would have scorched it. Rumor has it they intended to play but one song, rent a hall across the street and then play for free all night for whoever showed up, which probably would have been half the city of New York. Easily one of the greatest bands ever, and the best live band in rock's illustrious history.
Wow that makes me so sad. I was still in high school during this, but I would have done anything to go to that gig. I have no doubt Joe would have done that.
Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe and a big shout out to the Sex Pistols

I love that Terry chime have told, We stop for the war , Before we ve killed like in drama.
There's a fictionalized British movie where a kid is bullied and Joe Strummer helps him out.
Paul is still one cool SOB. He's always had his own sense of style and has only gotten smoother with the passage of time.
god bless the clash .......
nope. this really aint place for any faith shit i think...
The song "Janie Jones", the passion and power of it will forever live with me. Thank you to The Clash!
So sad Joe wasn't there. He would gave a great speech and an even greater performance with the Clash. RIP Joe Strummer.
110 % genuine. heard it in their albums & shows. saw it in their eyes when we spoke just briefly a couple of times.
March 1983 me and Serena, a classmate from university, waiting TWO DAYS outside Paul's flat. In fact, after a unbeliable waiting, Paul arrived. Black motorcycle, black suit, blond hair and an amazing kindness.
My favorite band ever! One of the most important group ever! Their messages, their powerful music, their poetic words.... I still loving them, for all of my life my beloved band.
Thanks Joe, Paul, Mick, Topper and Terry... I grow up because of you. Thanks, indeed!
Terry Chimes - Class Act.
Agreed. He spent almost his whole speech praising the guy who took his place.
TheRealCritique Bernard Rhodes destroying the Clash, not Topper. And Joe kicked off Mick, because Bernie said.I love Paul so,so much, but not Rhodes the most important figure.Joe was,his lyrics,Topper's amazing perfect drumming (in every style!),Mick's musics and Paul's played pretty well on bass and he was good-looking,so stylish:Punk God...Interesting that Paul calls Joe "Brother"...only Joe...Respect to Mr.Simonon, but Mick? And Topper? This 2 Guys were there too,Dear Paul!He is a gentle guy, almost crying, sweet Paul...Love him. :) Love the whole Clash, their MUSIC...Joe,Mick,Paul and Topper (not Terry Chimes, not Pete Howard).Joe missing here forever...:(( Topper missing here...:( That's not right. :( Mick was short, but I like his last words (garage bands)...Thanks,Mick! ;) The Clash totally deserved this award, but if the legendary Joe lives...WHEN would it happened this defacto?...That's the truly sad to me.Cheers to All Clash Fan!Punk Girl.
Where is THE REAL DRUMMER,TOPPER?Tory Crimes is Our Lamborghini Guy (Paul referred in an interview that Terry done it for money,he wasn't real punk! I don't like Chimes.).The Next Chyropractor Terry spent long months! :D in The Clash as session musician in 1977 and in 1982 (before and after Topper, really short time, months),he isn't a real punk. +And he has family but his face looks like a gay's.(He keeps in secret,I think.Lamborghini Gay...:-) I haven't got problem with homosexuals, but I don't like money-centered persons. :-/ Not real punk.He loves only the money. Paul said the truth,I think,he isn't a liar.
A Man didn't told to a Woman: "You're an idiot." You are an unintelligent jerk!!! I haven't got homophobia,but I don't like Chimes.Terry is a session musician,deserved the money,because worked for money-said Paul.Rhodes destroyed the band...!And you are a Topper Hater!
Topper was invited to the R`n`R hall of fame induction but could face the flight to the US during his rehab.
omg i love paul though 'the three musketeers' and he sounds so sad when he talks about joe
I'm glad Paul mentioned Guy Stevens.
Terry Chimes, you are very professional and classy. Thank you for keeping The Clash going for as long as you did.
Probably the greatest British band of all time, and probably a blessing that they never reformed. It's good to remember these bands as they were in their prime. RIP Joe Strummer, long live The Clash
Joe Strummer was the heart and soul of the Clash. Mick Jones was the guitarist. My god. They are more relevant than ever. I love them all.
"Sushi recommendation" 😂 I love you Paul
terry Chimes, what a gent, he played on their first album but scarcely mentioned that, just had praise for Nicky Headon. Class.
The Clash and Rush. My two all time rock bands. Very different but both the real deal.
Yeah! Great coment, love both bands too
Both are my favorite bands too, awesome. And not too different, why? Here's why:
1. Both experimented with reggae, and other forms of music; not just one formula
2. Regardless of trends, record executive pressure, severe lack of radio play (until late in their career); both did WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANTED TO DO!! Both Rush and The Clash never compromised their art to sell records, they realized their legend and influence was much more important. So, no; not too different from each other!
Kim Cornell I would say they are very different indeed. Clash are awesome, and Rush sucks
@@y0sh1100 what the fuck
Paul never ages, timeless.
Truly sad that Joe and Topper weren't there!!! R.I.P JOE!!!!
Terry chimes And Topper headon were both Amazing Drummers.
Rick Merchant even Pete Howard
Love Topper and wondered where he went off to
Thank you the clash for all the music!
Not only got to see them live, at thebarton theatre, adelaide, south australia in 1982. But had the privilege of going backstage with their entire road crew and around 50 other lucky young punkers! Stoll is one of the most memorable times of my life. Everyone was totally wasted, but topper had to be the most smashed! Got a t shirt signed by the entire band and road crew, but over the years it has become misaced, or stolen by a jelous mate. Anyway, great memories and great live. Ive seen a lot of bands over the years but these guys gave it all for over 2 hours. Brilliant, and a huge part of my teenage years and beyond still till now. Legends.
It took them until 2003 to get into the hall of fame you would think they would be the one of the first bands to get into it
You can't be inducted until 25 years after your first album, so the earliest they could have been inducted was 2002 anyway
They came with a sword. They didn't come in peace. They upset the corporate apple cart.
No you wouldn't
i like the way they include everyone cosmo ,bernie ,they always have had so much integrity
I fuckin fuckin fuckin fuckin....... fuckin love this band, The Clash's music change my life forever, thanks you guys
I saw the Clash when they first hit NYC in '78 supporting the "Give 'em Enough Rope" LP. An AWESOME show, a great band, my ears are still ringing.
I saw them in 79 at the Palladium. I thought the balcony was going to collapse it was bouncing so much from people dancing.
Fuck, Paul had me chokin up :(
Saw them at Bonds On Broadway in '81. The band I saw that night played as if the world would end if they stopped. As good a live band as there ever was.
Mick’s shoutout to the Sex Pistols at the end👌
No Pistols, no Clash. Simple as that.
None better. They show their absolute class right here.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame accepts The Clash award
They deserve to be in the Hall of Fame !!!! RIP Joe Strummer
Humble genius Paul
Terry is a real gentleman
Touch of class bringing in Terry Chimes with them. Other bands have done far worse, for example Fleetwood Mac screwing Bob Welch out of recognition.
I thought so too. They brought back Terry for a short stint after Topper was sacked, so it doesn't seem the band held any lasting grudge against him, even though they surely missed Topper and his great drumming skills.
Terry is an excellent drummer on that first album. I know Topper's ace but Terry's great too.
And Pearl Jam screwing Dave Abbruzzese out of recognition.
And Terry gave a lovely and humble speech, as did Mick. Brilliant group and Joe will never be forgotten.
The hall decides who goes in. The hall screwed the others.
Joe Strummer was a class act. He was pure Rock n Roll and had a message. RIP Joe🙏 Thank you
One word to describe this band the best.
Tremenda, imprescindible e inolvidable banda!!! Su música es inoxidable
goddamn, Paul is a cool bastard! just look at him! just listen to him! I mean, my God!
I was 15 in 1977 and went to see the Clash. My mate's brother was a lot older than us so we had heard Iggy Pop,the stooges,ny dolls,mc5 we had john peel on the radio we loved cpt beefheart, you could send away to trojan records for cheap singles that didn't make it in the uk.
The Clash on stage changed me from being a spectator to a doer,I enjoy painting, drawing, guitar, bass, poetry I love my work as a carpenter. I am shit at all of that except I am a good carpenter and well paid to do it,but i love my hobbies too. They gave me access to music and bands who I never would have heard of.
In total I saw them 5 times everytime they were perfect( musically too, never a bum note never a mumbled or forgotten vocal by Joe,all the band everytime so pleased to be on stage never a cross word😌)shame is they were perfect when you saw them and no live recording of them can ever really show you what it was like.So get all your mates into a room invite some wierd looking men and women into your bedroom and turn the volume up way too loud and listen to a live set or put on a live dvd.The walk outside and get to see all your neighbours moaning at u and the local goon squad raring to beat the shit out of you .
Happy times
Bless the young who love this they have found this music ,much in the way I now love the blues from way before I was born
you shouldn't bother your neighbors
Nice to see Terry here and also to hear some love for Baker and Johnny!
A band that has a soundtrack to my life.
I was lucky enough to see them at The Palladium in NYC with Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen standing near me in the audience, and also at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. The latter show was the most violent concert I ever attended. The audience kept fighting and shoving each other. I actually feared for my life. They had an opening girl band called "Pulsalama" that was the worst band that ever existed and pissed off everyone in the audience. Will never forget seeing the Clash!
One of the best group's ever assembled I think. Long live The Clash! Rip Joe.
Paul Simonon's one of THE coolest. He's got more great quotes in "Westway to the World".
I never loved a band the way I loved The Clash
Mick gets in the last word - SEX PISTOLS! hA, HA FUCKIN' HA. YOU guys crack me up.
We miss Joe. Thank you Joe, for your amazing contributions.
the greatest rock and roll band of all time
didn't you know that joe knew they were going to be inducted?? it was announced weeks before his death, and he was in fact very proud of it. he saw it as recognition for all the work that he and the clash had done.
Great. Viva The Clash!
Hello The Clash, you guys gave me a righteous kick back in 77 with the other at various degrees soulmate bands & artists, you showed with style that rock is not a matter of virtuosity in the first place - that raw energy and attitude are the fuel and the gun powder for rocking guns that don't kill. Thank you so deeply and please keep on going forever. CHEERZ, ZAK
2:09 Paul made me cry
That's not Paul, it's Terry
***** Paul is in the right side Terry =)
Paul didn't even want to be there and he gives the best speech.
Should have been so much more. RIP Joe!!!
Here here! To all the garage bands!
Last great British band. 100% class. Was very much looking forward to seeing if Joe could get the others to play. Would have been amazing. Had just seen Joe and the Mescaleros in Boston in ‘01 when I heard Joe had died. My heart sank and then I watched this shortly after. Clash music is authentic, integrity, amazing, original. Changed my life.
Best 3 nights of my life THE CASH at Bonds on Broadway NYC !!!!!!
I hold on tears along side Paul when memory of Joe comes rushing up..what a bunch of brilliant people and they changed my world and made my life...I solute you punk brothers!!!
Ohhhh my God I remember this, I cried when Joe died and knowing this was coming, and what could have been, I'll always love the clash, my favorite bad that ever mattered
son of a bitch
Bittersweet at best... Rest in peace Mr.Strummer
That was Great.Best band ever.Coolest band ever.Miss u Joe.My Idol.Great to see Luce lola and jazz Joes wife and kids.
The only band that matters! THE MOTHERFUCKIN' CLASH! COME ON!
absolutely bringa a tear ❤️
I first seen the clash just before they had a record deal with CBS (before they had the orange PA gear) and then another four times after that and every gig was the best gig id been to, they just got better and better,
Clash city Rockers 🎸
Great band shame Topa was not there he was an amazing drummer and was a big part of the band
Paul said he wasn't interested in awards and only did this one for Joe and his widow who wanted it
"i'd just like to say a big shout out to the sex pistols also". he was acknowledging that the pistols, whom the clash owed their existence to, were till that point passed over by the HoF (while both the ramones and now the clash were in... pistols got in the following year). i'm sure john lydon was touched! but it was a good gesture on mick's part.
Cheetah Thunders. Not really. Clash formed in 76 and pistols in 75. Clash owe them nothing. The Clash is by far a better band. Pistols were a shit gimmick
@@daveg4236 I agree....The Clash didn't "owed their existence" to the Pistols,,,,,,and Lydon wasn't touched.....he called the Hall of fame a "piss stain" and didn't want to be inducted at all
Doubt Lydon was touched. He saw the HOF as a joke. In fact he often bashed The Clash, said they were never a punk band, bashed them since the 70s saying punk died when they signed to a major label (how many majors did the Pistols sign and get dropped from?). He even took some shots at Joe after he died but that is who Lydon is. He does a lot of it to be controversial, for attention. He still claims the Ramones had no influence, were also never a punk band but every band that came out of England back then can tell you the Ramones had such a massive impact on that scene when they came over there. Lydon and the Pistols were of course at that show.
@@Peppers19781978 I was being sarcastic when I said I'm sure Lydon was touched :) Like "I'm sure..."
@@daveg4236 The Clash may be better, but they ABSOLUTELY NEVER WOULD HAVE EXISTED if not for the Sex Pistols, and Mick acknowledged that here.
The first music I recall hearing as a child was queens bicycle and the clashes rock the casbah. And should i stay or should I go. As I grew older I found out that it was the clash and I brought two clash albums from Tower records in London when I was 14 on a day trip. The clash dubut and London calling. I was blown away with them both albums very different buy totally exhilarating. Thank you for the music. All of it. Rip Joe
Aint Mick Jones one of the nicest people in rock. What a great band; no TOTP, no reunion for the money. Pure class! (We'll all forget about 'Cut The Crap')
I am embarrassed at times to admit, I like Cut the Crap, too. At least, This Is England really hits me. Sorry to offend!
Strummer Cash no offence mate, I was being a little glib with that comment coz it's often deliberately overlooked by critics and fans. When I listen to 'This is England' (which, I agree, is the best track on 'Cut The Crap') it just makes me wonder what it would've been like with Jones and Headon on board. There is a demo version on UA-cam which, for my money, is better than the album version (less Bernie involved) and well worth a listen. For me 'Cut The Crap' is a big 'if only ...' and makes me just a little sad.
These guys wrote the soundtrack of my youth.
Obviously, the Rock and Roll HoF has levels of fame.
Most important band in history
Joe is my HERO!!!!!!!!
the band everyone wanted to be like'' : )
Jones refers to Robin Banks his school friend and later Clash roadie ,`stay free` is mostly written about him.
I love Paul sooooo fuckin much. i would kill to meet him... Joe too. I always felt Joe and Paul were the coolest guys in the group.
Paul,too smooooth,SOB,i wish I was him.Miss u JOE,R.I.P.
THE punk band. The band at the mountain top of the UK punk movement.
Nah, that's the Pistols. The Clash are right behind them though.
@@Vichedges It definetly wasnt the pistols. They were as punk as Thatcher.
@@RYx222 That's just dumb.
@@Vichedges No it isn't. Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious are plastic punks, they never believed what they sang... Johnny Rotten is a trump and Farage supporter, and loves the queen. He is the definition of fake poser punk
Carpe Diem Lol. OK man. Let me know how that works out for you!
It still sucks watching this because Joe so badly wanted to reunite The Clash but sadly passed away. It was going to happen.Mick said Joe was working on songs for The Clash. Paul at the time didn't seem on board though but I am willing to be he would've joined them. It's so sad Joe couldn't be there and his career was so on the way upwards when he passed. Just not fair. So thankful I got to see him perform live. Joe's passing had such a impact on Mick and Paul. Both really got back into music after he died, especially Paul. They of course also were in Gorillaz together as well.
What A band!!!!
OMG! Mick Jones has become Humphrey Bogart: "Play It Again, Sham 69!".

@Knepperify1 I see what you're saying but if I am correct the Ramones invented punk in 1974 and the Clash and Sex Pistols drew off of what they did
