Great videos guys! FYI, the hawaiian ukulele was originated from migrants that came from Madeira! Developed in the 1880s, the ukulele is based on several small, guitar-like instruments of Portuguese origin, the machete, cavaquinho and rajao , introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by Portuguese immigrants from Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. Three immigrants in particular, Madeiran cabinet makers Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias, are generally credited as the first ukulele makers. Two weeks after they disembarked from the SS in late August 1879, the Hawaiian Gazette reported that "Madeira Islanders recently arrived here, have been delighting the people with nightly street concerts." BTW, 100 euros/ day for the rental car is crazy! Did you check different places? Well, of course, it depends on each person's necessities.
40 years ago I toured Madeira. It was so memorable. A fantastic experience was hiking along the levadas into the rural areas surrounded by Eucalyptus trees. We hired a driver to go to the dark and rainy side of the island. We went from sunshine to mountaintops where we were surrounded by clouds.
It's always nice to see your favourite holiday destination validated especially by people from different countries, and in your case, different generations. We love Madeira and did our 12th visit in May this year. Incidentally I can recommend the open top bus tour in New York!

Hi as a local I am very happy you enjoyed your stay in Madeira. I hope that both of you come visit us again, they also call Madeira the pearl of the ocean or the garden of the ocean due to its luxious fruits and flowers and even world renown forest - laurissilva classified as UNESCO world heritage since December 1999
Bom dia Honeymoon Always, We loved your video! Too bad we did not get to meet you when you were here. Hopefully when we are on the mainland! Enjoy your journey Alan and Leslie It'll Be Fun Have
Madeira north side may looks like Hawaii the same with Azores Islands, but it's just that, everything else is different. Madeirans travel to Hawaii to teach how to cultivate the sugar cane, the ukulele instrument was also brought by Madeirans too (In Madeira have a different name braguinha) check here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_immigration_to_Hawaii
I've been to both places and lived in Hawaii. So I can sum it up this way. Madeira is cooler, fewer bugs, closer to the mainland of Portugal, European vs. Polynesian, much more affordable, welcoming to people from the US vs ambivalence about US mainlanders. Both places are incredibly beautiful. Hawaii is more lush with warmer ocean water. I'm moving to Madeira in 2023! I won my heart.
Nice job guys! I recently just discovered the island from a couple on another channel that moved there. Now it's on my list to check out for retirement. Being able to get to the mainland at extremely reasonable prices is another huge advantage of living there. I can't wait to go check it out. Seems like rental cars are getting crazily prices everywhere now.
Absolutely agree, calling Aveiro the Venice of Portugal is a stupidity... whoever came up with that idea has never been to Venice - to brand a place using some other place’s name is a recipe for disappointment. Fortunately Madeira usually calls itself the Pearl of the Atlantic or the Garden of the Atlantic, which is a good and justifiable calling card.
Great video guys. Been watching all your stuff as me and my wife are opening a coffee shop in Lisbon towards the end of the year. We are English but living in L.A and leaving end of October…
Hey my Home for the last 18 years! Glad to finally seeing it known for reasons other than CR7. To be fair, to truly know Madeira you definitely need a car, hanging around in funchal does not do justice to its beauty but that said yeah that rental car was expensive but at the same time a taxi can charge you half of that just to take you to the airport or to Funchal (15 minutes drive) and there isn't any other alternative as they fought hard to get rid of uber for not ripping out tourist. Next time you come make sure you visit Fanal, since you loved Arieiro, you won't be dissapointed.
Madeira Island my place of birth, Funchal, the capital, is my hometown, I'm glad that you've loved being there, next time you go there, try to book the hire car in advance, and kind of of season, 100 euros a day was a bit expensive, there's a lot more to see on the Island.
Hi..very informative vlog.Cld u plz let us know whether it's a good idea to visit funchal in October end??? I mean is like the off season there like other beach places,,..shops n restaurants will get closed or how it is???? It wl be very helpful if u can give me some idea.
@@piyalibanerjee8648 October can be as hot as May, it all depends, obviously the chance of rain, and lower temperatures is always there, we don't really have an of season, Madeira Island is a all year round touristic region, shops, restaurants, cafés etc. are open all year round, its more a question of luck with the weather than anything else, rough winters are not a thing, yes, it might be cooler sometimes, but -10/20 etc. not at all.
Portuguese subscriber here. Madeira is always on my list...the island offers some of the best, scenic, 'atmospheric' hiking trails anywhere in Europe (the countless 'Levadas', of course). You really have to hike to Caldeirão Verde, Rabaçal and so on. But the best of the best, IMHO, is the hike between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. It's a bit strenuous but it is truly breathtaking. Next time, don't miss out on that one. Get yourself into good shape, put on your 'adventure boots' and go hike well above the clouds. After such a hike, you can eat all of the 'pão de caco' available across Madeira with no guilt. Just pleasure. Take care

@ 4:25 - Wait....what?! €100 for the day?! wow. In any case, the drive out of town looked so lovely. Beautiful film footage and the hotel looks amazing.
I thought it was The Açores that were called the Hawaii of Portugal? Either way it's stunning! We have friends moving to Madeira in 6 months and we'll get to visit next year. 😍

It all depends in what’s the purpose of your visit, Madeira have more tourists so can be overcrowded, Azores you must pick the right season otherwise the weather can ruined your visit, if your looking for nature, Azores is more green overall and can be a stunning experience, Madeira nature is more dramatic making hiking experience overwhelming but for accommodating and food, Madeira have more options. They both are pretty places and comparing can be unfair, like Lisbon or Porto which is better I like both for different reasons and you?

For us it is about the value you get for the cost. While the Cliff Bay or Savoy are expensive, they are worth the money and we expect them to be expensive as a luxury resort. At the same time a small rental car for over $100 is not not a great value. For example I just paid about $33 a day for a rental car in Lisbon.

I hear that. Good luck to you. We are moving to the Coimbra area in 2024 and so looking forward to it. All the best

One way is seeing how many locations or destinations they have. If they only have a few they are more local.
