These presenters all talk about the recent climate change as if it did not exist in the past! What about the historically evident shifts in climate that led to the major changes of whole ecosystems proven through the geological records based on drill cores? The shifts in temperature must have been much larger than the 2 degree Celsius! Our recent societies make the assumption that the climate was always as stable as during the last 500 to 1500 years but the sediment layers show a much higher variability before that time even without the impact of human activity. Statistical correlations do not always tell the whole story and all three presenters appear much too emotionally involved as to be factual.
I'm glad to see the comments section is more measured and calm than the lecturers.
Nuclear might not be perfect, but it would solve a lot of energy problems. Why don't the scientists want to do that?
Models are not data (Rory Tennes), but it is damned hard to make sense of data without a model, because data do not tell you what is cause and what is effect. Granted, a model will not tell you reliably about the future unless you include all the relevant causes you haven't yet thought of. Ay, there's the rub.
Give people more money to live on and population decreases. Education is nice, too, but we don't have that time.
Hadly's portion (first speaker) was interesting... so humans are causing climate change that will bring on a mass extinction event, yet the most recent examples of extreme climate change did not cause extinctions as much as human hunting? Sounds like she thinks humans are the problem, not climate change. Any time a speaker has the disposition of someone performing a drug abuse intervention I roll my eyes and say "yeah you're right, It's up to me to stop human progress around the world. I'll get right on that."
Humans ARE NOT causing climate change. The climate changes constantly on its own and humans are along for the ride. As for the extinction event 12.9kya that eliminated the Clovis culture along with the other megafauna, humans are totally along for the ride. And so are we...

I'm near certain she isn't right about population growth... from what I've seen the birth rate is falling quite a bit faster than people expect. So, that in itself is at least good news, but the situation for the climate is still 'critical!'
China has recently raised the number of children they allow from two to three. The “one child” rule was abandoned at least ten years ago. It has more men than women because of the old policy. Sons were supposed to take care of their parents.

Thank you so much for sharing. We might weigh/revise our historically vehement stance on "invasive species" to expand and include effects on the genetic mosaic of a geographic area. By increasing biodiversity, we increase the diversity of species assemblages/ecosystems., increase the variability of biological/taphonomic weathering processes, influence weather (relative humidity, soil com[position and characteristics, the list goes on. Should introduced species that play a complementary role (or even one of momentary disturbance be fought? Or channeled to produce adaptive goals that compromise our necessary environmental demands with realities we have yet to fathom or understand, let alone control. Thank you for stimulating so many exciting and essential questions and sharing them with us.
