I'm not a Hewitt fan, but he really has played the cards he was dealt very well. He is short, not very powerful, no weapon, but he still managed to get to number 1 and win a grand slam title. He won a few masters titles and such. He has a better resume, IMO than a lot of the top 10. How many of them from Murray, Ferrer, Tsonga, Berdych etc have won a slam? Or won a Master Cup Title twice? He has nothing to be ashamed of, and I hope he can walk away with his head held high.

Hewitt was way past done in this match. Amazingly he didn't retire for another 5-6 years after this. His ground strokes always lacked power, but his intensity and speed was what made him so good from 2000-2005.
Fans of Nadal, Djoker and Murray will mention their records etc. But think about it this way. Ask the question to yourself. When you play any sport let alone Tennis, wouldn't you enjoy the win more if you did it in style or with great piece of skill as opposed to winning it ugly? Yes winning is winning but every player knows that there is extra enjoyment when you hit winners with skill instead of just blast the ball. Not only Federer puts a great entertainment on for the spectators, he himself enjoys the tennis the way he plays. There is difference between playing because you have hunger to win and playing because you enjoy it very much. Yup! That's why Roger is the most skillful player, effortless and classy! Nadal has a unique power based technique though, but requires lots of physical muscle power! And running speed too! Djokovic uses his speed in running! There's a lot more to it such as agility, athleticism, stamina, anticipation, timing..etc.. But ones mentioned before are their main weapons!

You really lack any tennis knowledge, djokovic, murray and nadal can not ball bashers, a ball basher is like berdych. Those 3 are counterpunchers but have the ability to hit winners from anywhere on the court, great footwork and the ability to defend. Novak and murray have one of the best backhands of all time while nadal's forehand is one of the best in history along with federer. Federer is past his peak here but still is more aggressive than he is in 2018...in 2017 Federer was going for his shots and that i why he had 2 slams. In the 2017 US open he was passive and hence paid the price for it. Again, in 2018 he couldnt win Wimbledon because of his passive game play. If he needs to win the US 2018 he will have to play more aggressively and uninhibited. Ocourse in 2010, he was still just breathtakingly brilliant.
I'm pretty sure I said faster courts help his game rather than them being a pre-requisite for him to hit winners. Look at his indoor record for the last two years. Pretty impressive. Those conditions are perfect for his game.
From back in the day when no one had yet figured out Federer’s game. Just keep hitting to that backhand all day. 1 set in and it will start to take its toll. And then you expand out to the forehand. Novak and Rafa started doing this at will.m once they figured it out. Hewitt has the game to do it too, but they hadn’t figured him out as well back then.

if federer had sustained that level of play he showed at this tournament for the whole of 2010 it could have been his best year ever. in my opinion this was when he was the most complete player.
He actually had a lot of good shots in the match and many of his ground-strokes were deep and penetrating. Federer knew how and also had the ability to counter them.

The difference is that while Hewitt defends and has no real weaknesses in his game, he doesn't have a weapon like Nadal's forehand. Nadal, though being a counterpuncher can generate enormous amounts of pace off his left hand wing. Though definitely, he is more defensive than he is offensive.
Hewitt simply doesn’t have the weaponry to threaten Federer. For Federer, it’s a matter of casually trading from the back until the opportunity finally presents itself

Hewitt's slow groundies making Federer look good here. Federer had all the time he needed and when he has time, you're done. Every shot, even stretching out wide, is just another opportunity for Federer to hit a winner. In war they talk about the fire control computer for the big guns ... Fed is always effortlessly calculating and he fires the perfect shot, seemingly every time in this match. His skills are so solid that he has an option for a winner no matter the scenario. Just abundant shots on call from flick of the wrist backhand to crushing forehand down the line to drop shot to putting it behind the other player or just out of his reach. So locked in. Hewitt just left him with too much time to execute. And 9.5 years later Federer's reaction time isn't quite as good. This kind of display probably isn't in the cards--plus, the other players are better now.

he had a positive head to head vs agassi who won 5 of his 8 slams during the time he was playing alongside hewitt. Again had a positive head to head against sampras, I know he was on the decline but still an impressive feat, along with Moya, Kuerten, Safin and Kafelnikov. So to say nalbandian was the hardest resistance is just not true at all, you should give him more credit.
Hewitt had too little aggression to have been competitive in this game, 3:33 was the best example. If Hewitt didn't even hit down the line with that weak ball from Roger, he could only count on Roger's unforced errors, which didn't happen as often back then, especially against players one or tow tiers below, like Hewitt.

Hewitt was way past done in this match. Amazingly he didn't retire for another 5-6 years after this. His ground strokes always lacked power, but his intensity and speed was what made him so good from 2000-2005.

Fans of Nadal, Djoker and Murray will mention their records etc. But think about it this way. Ask the question to yourself. When you play any sport let alone Tennis, wouldn't you enjoy the win more if you did it in style or with great piece of skill as opposed to winning it ugly? Yes winning is winning but every player knows that there is extra enjoyment when you hit winners with skill instead of just blast the ball. Not only Federer puts a great entertainment on for the spectators, he himself enjoys the tennis the way he plays.
There is difference between playing because you have hunger to win and playing because you enjoy it very much.
This is where Federer is on a level of his own above everyone else irrespective of if he will be considered GOAT.
How many people can say "I enjoy watching Nadal or Djoker or Murray" as opposed to "I enjoy watching Federer play"?
Yup! That's why Roger is the most skillful player, effortless and classy! Nadal has a unique power based technique though, but requires lots of physical muscle power! And running speed too! Djokovic uses his speed in running! There's a lot more to it such as agility, athleticism, stamina, anticipation, timing..etc.. But ones mentioned before are their main weapons!
You think hitting the ball over 4000 rpm doesn't take skill? Djokovic, murray and nadal have skills as well as athleticism in their game. You casual fans don't understand the skills you need to produce what these guys can do. If it doesn't take skill then how come you guys can do it? Plus entertainment and enjoyment for different players is an opinion. Some people like you like to watch federer doin ballad dancing and some ppl prefer watching djokovic, nadal and murray play.
Well, if you talk about skills, the only skill Nadal has is the ability to hit ball at 4000 rpms on clay and I am in awe of Nadal for that, no question. Athleticism is not skill and Federer is as good an athlete as any one else on tour except Nadal who over does it. Let's see if either of Nadal, Djokovic and Murray reaches 1000 tour wins. Compared to Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovik do nothing but ball bashing. Its well known in tennis world and you hear it from tennis experts time and again.
Talking about skills, there is no one more skilful than Federer, again a fact that is well documented and agreed by tennis experts and not just you or me.
I was merely saying that when you watch a tennis player play, everything comes to gather on court and it is a lot better with Federer than anyone else.

You really lack any tennis knowledge, djokovic, murray and nadal can not ball bashers, a ball basher is like berdych. Those 3 are counterpunchers but have the ability to hit winners from anywhere on the court, great footwork and the ability to defend. Novak and murray have one of the best backhands of all time while nadal's forehand is one of the best in history along with federer. Yes, federer is more skilled than those 3 but it doesn't mean those 3 aren't skilled at all. If you're saying their style doesn't take any skill then how come you can't do it? then how come nadal, djoker and murray are able to finish in the top 5 so consistently for many years? Tennis experts doesn't mean jack shit, it's their opinion just like everyone else. Agassi and McEnroe said nadal is greater than federer so does that mean they are right? I don't believe nadal is better than federer even though I'm not a ''tennis expert''.
I think everybody likes it their way. I'm sure Nadal or anyone wouldn't say "I hate the way I play, why can't I play like Federer ?" can't imagine people saying that.

His forehand is a weapon when he has time. When he struggles though it's attackable and he hits it short.
Federer is past his peak here but still is more aggressive than he is in 2018...in 2017 Federer was going for his shots and that i why he had 2 slams. In the 2017 US open he was passive and hence paid the price for it. Again, in 2018 he couldnt win Wimbledon because of his passive game play. If he needs to win the US 2018 he will have to play more aggressively and uninhibited. Ocourse in 2010, he was still just breathtakingly brilliant.

From back in the day when no one had yet figured out Federer’s game. Just keep hitting to that backhand all day. 1 set in and it will start to take its toll. And then you expand out to the forehand. Novak and Rafa started doing this at will.m once they figured it out. Hewitt has the game to do it too, but they hadn’t figured him out as well back then.

@3timeMVPNash I agree, Rafa and Hewitt are both Counterpunchers, and they use their opponents pace against them. The difference is that while Hewitt defends and has no real weaknesses in his game, he doesn't have a weapon like Nadal's forehand. Nadal, though being a counterpuncher can generate enormous amounts of pace off his left hand wing. Though definitely, he is more defensive than he is offensive.

@aakzeman what i meant was, since his career has been plagued with injuries he hasn't had the opportunity to adjust his game so he probably just falls back on counterpunching becuz at the moment, that's all he knows how to do. Before he got seriously injured in like 05 i think it was, he visibly got bigger to try and gain more power off the ground
After the BH passing shot at 6:20 , Hewitt is literally tasting defeat well in advance. He's probably thinking NOBODY can be that good. He had the same feeling when an injured Fed dispatched Millman at AO 2020.

Hewitt's slow groundies making Federer look good here. Federer had all the time he needed and when he has time, you're done. Every shot, even stretching out wide, is just another opportunity for Federer to hit a winner. In war they talk about the fire control computer for the big guns ... Fed is always effortlessly calculating and he fires the perfect shot, seemingly every time in this match. His skills are so solid that he has an option for a winner no matter the scenario. Just abundant shots on call from flick of the wrist backhand to crushing forehand down the line to drop shot to putting it behind the other player or just out of his reach. So locked in. Hewitt just left him with too much time to execute. And 9.5 years later Federer's reaction time isn't quite as good. This kind of display probably isn't in the cards--plus, the other players are better now.
This was the last slam of the Federer dominance era, 16/27 slams is ridiculous, for reference Novak got close at 16/36 slams which is still unreal.

Again had a positive head to head against sampras, I know he was on the decline but still an impressive feat, along with Moya, Kuerten, Safin and Kafelnikov.
