I had a smallish but painful bunion - just a small bump on the big toe. It started with a pair of “earth shoes” (you have to be in your 60’s to know what those are) in about 1978. A few years ago I finally decided to get a consult. They told me mine would be solved with a quick and easy surgery, just a bit of trimming the bone. The recovery was lengthy and awful and my big toe has been stiff ever since. I still have to be very careful buying shoes or get pain. Now my big toe is starting to bend toward the others which are crooked. Now the big toe and second toe are meeting and both growing painful bumps which is what brought me here. My reason for sharing this story is to let people know surgery may make things worse rather than better. I have heard this from others as well. Please get multiple consults and talk to lots of people before opting for surgery. Good luck fellow sufferers.
Very informative. Delaying surgery on my painful bunion led to secondary problems with osteophytes on heel, Sural nerve neuroma, and arthritis in the sacro-illiac joint. So the bunion itself may not get much worse if you wait for surgery, but a lot of other problems may be caused because of changes in gait/walking due to bunion pain and how that impacts the mechanics of your entire musculoskeletal system....
This is awful. Over the last 30 odd years I've had 2+3 bunion surgeries on both feet. Morton's neuroma on both feet and I'm currently waiting for surgery to straighten two toes and another neuroma surgery. Sending my regards
I've had a bunion on my left foot since I was about 13 maybe. The ironic thing about this video, is that I barely ever wore shoes at that time, constantly running around barefoot. I've never really known why I had it. Now I'm going to assume it's mostly just genetics for me. Thanks for the info
Someone may make a huge medical breakthrough in bunions prevention. The foot is an incredible engineering marvel, a lifetime of footfalls with incalculable tonnage of use. Some means to realign that first metatarsal for foot health.
I am a medically trained provider, actually an optometrist, and I tried to get into medical school, but was turned down. I treated myself with toe spacers and then switched to toe shoes and socks for about two years and I can say I proved you WRONG in many aspects. My dorsal bunion was causing me to have plantar faciitis twice, but now my toes have come back to where my flat feet are no longer flat, my metatarsial pad has shifted, my 20 years of athletic's foot fungus is gone, my hip pain is gone, I can hike mts. much farther and easier, and yes, my great toes are now sprayed out and much straighter. I think you need to invite me to your school as a paid researcher. Richard Jackson, O.D.

Thankyou for talking about hammer toes, many only talk about the bunions. I have a hammer toe on each foot but no pain, it just means shows are difficult to find.
My podiatrist actually said it wouldn't make sense to have surgery on my pretty significant bunions. I was maybe 20. I'm 26 now. I had x-rays done at 14 because they were already bad. I'm still questioning him on this and want to ask other professionals. I don't want them getting worse and worse over the next many more decades.
Anyone want to sponsor a bunion and hammer toe operation for me please, please, pretty please even lol,, o how I hate my feet and want to wear nice sandals : (
I have a small bit of gout on one joint and was told by a foot specialist that I don't have a bunion on either foot. My toes are bent in but not very much. That said, the bunion area hurts on both feet and I'm shifting my footwear to be more friendly to my feet and adding toe spacers to my feet in my shoes. I am also doing my own taping to straighten the big toe and gently spacing (a knitted spacer that I created) between my other toes to passively speed up the process of being able to wear the toe spacers longer in my shoes. My feet thank me when I put on toe spacers inside the appropriate shoes and I look forward to the day when I can put them on in the morning and wear them the whole day. Thanks for this informative presentation. Although I may not be able to change the shape of my feet (and then again maybe since they are flexible), I'm looking forward to experience less pain when walking. (Having spacers in my shoes are helping to correct not just toe but other foot mechanics and bringing relief.)
@@Ebonyides idk if its caused from the hips being unlevel or imbalance from using a cane while recovering but I notice my left knee turning inwards. I'm sure you did rehab. You might try a chiropractor and an exercise bike may help
I've got a bunion on my left foot which is definitely inherited (almost everyone on my dad's side of the family plus my brother have deformed bunions) but I also had a childhood injury on my right foot which caused chronic strain and led to a pronounced limp every time it got inflamed. I needed surgery because my bunion bone was tearing out of the flesh!! The skin had already torn due to rubbing against shoes. My surgeon filed the bone and tightened the ligament on the inside with stitches, and loosened the ligament between the big toe and the second to ease the strain. He warned me that the bone would grow back and his main concern was to stop it from getting exposed. It worked and unfortunately he was right about the bone growth returning, but thankfully the ligaments are stronger with no scar tissues. Since then, I've worn night splints (most uncomfortable) and now a silicone toe separator which also has a cover for the bunion. It's mostly painful during the wet season or during winter and the toe separator helps reducing inflammation, plus I can wear it inside the shoe though I mostly wear sandals with a toe stump.
How do the toe extensors get stronger than the toe flexors? When you look at conditions such as foot drop it is always the plantarflexors that seem to overpower the dorsiflexors. Even when you MMT the toes you have more power in flexion vs extension
Grace I had surgery and would suggest you only do one foot at a time. Recovery is need as it truly takes 2 years before you totally recover since our feet are essential for us. You can get the second one done a few months later. And, I would also suggest investing in slip on shoes a 1/2 size bigger then your normal size because you feet will be swollen for about 6-8 months before you can even start wearing you normal regular shoes again. I purchase inexpensive 1/2 size bigger slip on canvas shoes and worn loose fitting socks to allow for comfort. And, elevation and icing is need for at least 6-8 months as well if you want your feet to recover well. Good Luck. I only got I foot done; really don’t want to get the second one done; if I can avoid it I will.

Do bunions make you feel stiffness in your legs. I have tired legs for long time and I keep on asking my doctor about the reason. Today I suddenly found about bunions actually contribute to pain. I was actually feeling tired with all shoes and was wondering why and what’s the reason? I was actually looking for really comfortable shoes (had no idea that’s it’s not the shoes but the bunions mainly)
My legs also get tired. Iam 70. I walk through the pain and Ithink it is most important to walk correctly, i.e.heel-toes, and accentuate it. Also try Feldenkreis for feet. I think it has helped me a bit after just one week. Still pain in the ball of foot, though.
I have had two bunion surgeries so I get to be that lucky 1/3 and my hammer toe fusion BROKE and I had to go back in and have another surgery on that and get the pin put in the tip of my toe like is shown in the picture. I just got my pin out 4 days ago and now I look like I have a Shrek foot!!! Not to mention I have MORE pain in the hammer toe now than I did prior to the surgery!! DO NOT GET THAT ONE DONE IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!! Trust me or not !
I had them since childhood l then boots in the Army made them way worse! Oh, the heels too! 😆 Mom has em. She has to wear wide width shoes. I think we both have flat feet also.
Why do you say never get a tendon transfer? I lost the second toe on my right foot and the big toe over a 10 year period has tried to fill in that space and critically deformed my foot with a giant bunion. I'm going in for surgery and what ever else it might take to relieve the pain. I'm at the point I can barely walk on it.
My second toe curves toward toe 345 at the last joint how can I straighten then toe straighteners are too close to base of foot and will marble pick ups work
Presentation was helpful, thank you. If I could just suggest limiting how many times you say “uhmmm”. I think there’s over 100 times you say that. Just saying…
This is such crap. "It has been shown in populations that wear shoes ..." Of course that's thee #1 reason. Just look at a babies foot and look at the shoes kids and adults wear. The toes should be the widest part of the shoe but it isn't. People, please check out the Correct Toes website if you want the truth. Wearing Correct Toes has been a game changer. I'm not exaggerating. I thought I had a balance problem but it turns out I had a SHOE problem. This is why I have ZERO trust in conventional medicine.
Why myself tone stuck up in my shoes👠 and my 5 toe and cross over top each other pinky toe pooping sound crock sound what I sleep in the morning and evening and night

Mommaa D and Muffy was it expensive to do?
I had them since childhood l then boots in the Army made them way worse! Oh, the heels too! 😆
Mom has em. She has to wear wide width shoes. I think we both have flat feet also.
Hi dear friend, nice to meet you .could you contact my email :l16675143533@gmail.com
My dad has bunions and my brother has them cause genetics but I’m really lucky that I don’t have it
The shoes are the problem. Shoes are deforming our feet. It’s like ancient Chinese foot binding but unintentional.
Wear Crocs
They only help if you have very small bunions
If you have large bunions they will roll out of place
Never get a tendon transfer
Why do you say never get a tendon transfer? I lost the second toe on my right foot and the big toe over a 10 year period has tried to fill in that space and critically deformed my foot with a giant bunion. I'm going in for surgery and what ever else it might take to relieve the pain. I'm at the point I can barely walk on it.
If you don't know the cause, how can you have a solution
i watch this when i cant sleep ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Why does she look like shes trying not to laugh lool is it just me?
I need a new foot

My second toe curves toward toe 345 at the last joint how can I straighten then toe straighteners are too close to base of foot and will marble pick ups work
I'm watching this because I'm too lazy to go see a doctor.
Presentation was helpful, thank you. If I could just suggest limiting how many times you say “uhmmm”. I think there’s over 100 times you say that. Just saying…
Gorgeous asl
I’ve had bunions since I was a baby
Perfect toes?
Um! lol I couldn't resist.
i thought bunions were microwabable buns with chocolate on the inside
I used to think it was a bun with onions, like onion rings
Admiring a problem...dislocations .
Cutting your bones is crazy! I don't believe in that. Has to be a better way, exercises or so, but surgery just if there is arthritis involved.
I heard onions are good for bunions.
So are unions
@joanwilliams is surgery the best way?, thank you.
I've recently had lapiplasty bunion surgery, the best bunion surgery option out there in my opinion, and am making update videos if you're interested
This is why I have ZERO trust in conventional medicine.
why bunions they should have stuck with hammertoes
Um...
Why myself tone stuck up in my shoes👠 and my 5 toe and cross over top each other pinky toe pooping sound crock sound what I sleep in the morning and evening and night
The people here for pointe are here
Toes already too far to correct need good single seperaters
No exercises!
I am having a surgery next month. I have a bunion the next 2 toes are hammer toes which caused by the pressure of the big toe. Any advice or suggestion? Anyone faced that before?

I just had surgery 4 weeks ago on my bunion and 3 hammertoes. My toes are still a little swollen but it worked out well.
