I am 97 years old, and I play the guitar/bass/piano/drums/Peruvian flute/Ocarina of Time, and I just think this band is the bee's knees. Without a doubt, one of the greatest vocal talents of your generation. UNBELIVABLE.

"What a shame to judge a life that you can't change" I hate when people just look at someone and judge them. Shinedown clearly is very inspirational.

This song sums up my uncle Dan in a nutshell, other than the drinking and smoking, which he didn't do. Was a field medic in Vietnam, seen things that the stuff of nightmares are made of, came back, never had a girlfriend, never married or had kids, died alone from cancer 5 years ago. The world never seen your pain but I did uncle, hope your resting peacefully now, love you.

My father in law died of alcoholism in 2016 and the evening my wife called me from TX to tell me (she was by his side in the hospital) this song came on and it's been his song ever since and is exactly about him...everyone judged him constantly...few people knew what his demons were...I knew, sadly...

You know that feeling when a band comes out with an album that, even though their albums before, and later after were damn good in their own rite, especially the 2 before this, that they most likely, will never make one that will equal the masterpiece that ‘Sound Of Madness’ was..They packaged every emotion, every bit of soul searching, despair, love, lyrics/songwriting that we hadn’t experienced in the rock genre I believe in the 21st century in a rock album. And Brent Smith’s vocals? Beyond reproach..the most powerful voice in recent times..And ‘LIVE’? Forget about it..that’s where the “rubber meets the road” with this band and this dude’s off the chart pipes..Your studio tricks, and electronic enhanced bullshit won’t help you on stage in front of thousands of people…I saw them in August of this year and was kind of wondering what I would get (I hadn’t seen them since The Sound Of Madness tour in 2010) And if you can believe this, Brent Smith sings better than he EVER has..Most likely due to him taking care of himself and being healthier than ever..Can’t say enough about this band and how they’ve impacted my life. Sorry for rambling..lol. 😎✌🏻

I lost a very good friend to drugs. I still think of him. I will never know what caused him to ever fall into that. He had all that he could ever need, but something had to be missing from him. Perhaps it was due to his mom always meeting someone new and never having met his real father. He had a good relationship with his mother, but she would also be gone on long business trips and leave him with an aunt. Everybody reacts to these things differently. I used to be mad, and the last time we ever spoke was definitely a moment where I knew we would never see each other again. He said one day we will cross paths. I hope he is up to something better if he's still here. I can neither judge or blame him for all that has happened. He did it all to himself in the end as much as we all tried to help him. He was essentially family. He would stay with us all throughout every summer. I remember my younger brother pairing me up with him since he was my age. He was held back a year so he would have been a sixth grader. At least I have many good memories to remember him by. They always outshine the bad ones because we had many more good times while everything only began to unfold toward the end.

i did 2 back-to-back SOTF tours in western AFG fighting the Iranian Special Forces... when i came home, no one had any idea what i had done or dealt with for almost 18 months. this song on repeat and a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue every day kept me sane... RIGHT!!
my best friend at the time, a 150lb Rottweiler, learned to "sing" this song which makes it even more special to me. he was all i had and he learned and knew my pain.
what amazes me the most is i TOTALLY respect these guys because i can hear their pain in their music which tells me that they know what they are singing about...
my friend passed away almost, exactly 3 years ago, but i can still hear him "sing" this song every time which is great ... that makes this the greatest song ever recorded to me...
they are truly a great band
    BTW
which i meet in person and shared a drink with about 11yrs ago. great guys just because they shared a drink... my pre teen sons were there and they treated them well so they are AWESOME dudes!!

What a shame, to judge a life that you can't change
Been single for a long time and this song hits home since I get judged by everyone I talk to, and nobody understands what I'm going though. Makes me recall when I was severely depressed a decade ago and all I can do was try and hide it

  • @tikkidaddy631

One of the greatest gifts anyone has ever given me was when my. childern said two songs reminded them of me. Since music has always ment a lot to me, I asked which ones they were. .45 and What a Shame....my son understood my struggle with depression at the time, my daughter got the idea that if people would just realize that WE'RE NOT ALL THE SAME, and "let it GO", that "Dad" was intelligent enough to figure it out for himself.
That was instrumental in my recovery, and caused me to appreciate the life I live NOW. It's not about yesterday. It's about tomorrow. To my wife Rhonda, Brittany,Stefan,Brandon and Zachary....I love you all so very much....Pops

As the mother of a pre-teen with Autism, this touches my heart. He will face so much judgement in his life. He has already faced more than his share. I pray that the world is changing and becoming more kind to the differences in people. I try to do my part, sharing the message of acceptance.

    • @whatever9426

I wouldn't accept anything less than a regular diploma. My son scores 3-4 grade levels ahead in Science and Math. He is in regular ed with some pulls out to resource class, for help with things he didn't get to finish in class. He gets distracted easily, but is getting much better. I will never give up on him. He went from almost no speech, at 4 years old, to being a well versed child. He is now 11. He amazes me and has changed who I am! The things he has overcome makes me want to be a better person. I will always advocate for my child, even FIGHT for him if I have to. Whatever it takes. I will look for your movie. That's amazing! I know my son has amazing talents. At his young age, he studies and understands astro-physics which even most adults don't grasp. Many don't even know the first thing about the subject. So, yes, he will do amazing things. I am raising him to be secure in who he is. I wish every parent did the same.

    • @whatever9426
      @whatever9426 11 років тому

My son is very silly. He's 11. His peers are becoming more serious. He's a bit immature for his age. But, they will all even out in the long run.
Be proud of who you are. That's what I teach my son. I teach him to be proud of who he is and to celebrate the wonderful gifts that Autism give him. We don't focus on the negative. After all, everyone has something to overcome. For me, it was poverty and abuse. I overcame. You overcame your circumstances.

      @whatever9426 10 років тому

Thank you. I certainly try. My son is a well adjusted and very happy child. He wakes up singing and smiling and he ends his day that way. He is now 12 and confides everything in me. Both of my children do, actually. That tells me that I am doing something right. But, I'm the proud one to have such an amazing child! My favorite is when he tells me that he loves who he is and wouldn't change his Autism as that would take away the amazing talents he has because of his neurological difference. My next favorite is when he says, "I am not Autism. I am me and I just happen to have Autism. But, I am so much more than Autistic". That tells me that my message, of not allowing his challenges to define him, is getting through. It is so important to teach our children their value. If we don't, who will?

This posting is a tombstone; What a shame: please give this man his wings.
A friend, Richie passed away of a heart attack last week alone, found by another friend’s son laying across his computer, which showed as I understand it a web page for cruises. His Ex-wife and sons turned their backs on him, in part because of the things in this song. In short, we are having a memorial for him and I have asked they play this song, because at heart he was a good person. There was no wake, no funeral, no nothing for him, we are now the family that will memorialize him. This posting is his tombstone.

    What a Shame
    Shinedown
Two packs of cigarettes a day
    The strongest whiskey
    Kentucky can make
    That's a recipe to put a vagabond
    On his hands and knees
I watched it all up close
I knew him more than most
I saw a side of him, he never showed
Full of sympathy for a world that
    Wouldn't let him be
    That's the man he was
    Have you heard enough?
What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame, to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same
    What a shame
There's a hard life for every silver spoon
There's a touch of grey for every shade
    Of blue
That's the way that I see life
    If there was nothing wrong
    Then there'd be nothing right
And for this working man they say could
    Barely stand
There's gotta be a better place to land
Some kind of remedy for a world that
    Wouldn't let him be
    That's the man he was,
    Have you heard enough?
What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame, to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same
    What a shame
God forgive the hands that laid you down
They never knew how, but your broken
    Heart can break the sound
    And change the season
Now the leaves are falling faster
    Happily ever after
You gave me hope through your endeavors
And now you will live forever
What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame, to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same
    What a shame
What a shame, what a shame
'Cause we're not all the same
What a shame, what a shame
'Cause we're not all the same

First of all, awesome song. Second, epic video. As someone who's really into animation, I have a lot of respect for the amount of time put into this video. All the hand drawn stuff looks great, and the morphs are incredible. I don't think I'd have the patience to do the whole thing frame-by-frame like this. This is an absolutely great video. not exactly on topic if there was one but
don't you find it strange how a song that can make you physically and emotionly hurt can be the most beautiful songs you've heard? really like the pain in your chest and the weakness in you joints all the emotion
then I know its a really good song I dunno but I find that interesting :P

It is completely on topic. That is what great artist do. They convey the emotion of the song to the listener. Then it becomes more than just a song, it becomes more than just words and music. One doesn't just listen to it, they feel it. Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful day. Love and Light.

What a set of pipes that guy's got. Haven't really heard a rock singer with that kind of power, soul and strength in his voice since Sebastian Bach set his soul on fire and wailed in outreach in a similar vein to the same types in "Wasted Time" and "In a Darkened Room." Such an important message: Don't "judge a life that you can't change." Be kind. No matter who they are they are someone that matters to God. Perfect song.

Two packs of cigarettes a day
The strongest whiskey Kentucky can make
    That's a recipe
To put a vagabond on his hands and knees
I watched it all up close
I knew him more than most
I saw a side of him, he never showed
    Full of sympathy
For a world that wouldn't let him be
    That's the man he was
    Have you heard enough?
What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame, to have to beg you to see
    We're not all the same
    What a shame
There's a hard life for every silver spoon
There's a touch of grey for every shade of blue
That's the way that I see life
    If there was nothing wrong
    Then there'd be nothing right
And for this working man, they said, could barely stand
There's gotta be a better place to land
    Some kind of remedy
For a world that wouldn't let him be
    That's the man he was
    Have you heard enough?
What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame, to have to beg you to see
    We're not all the same
    What a shame
God forgive the hands that laid you down
    They never knew how
Much your broken heart can break the sound
    And change the season
Now the leaves are falling faster
    Happily ever after
You gave me hope through your endeavors
And now you will live forever
What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame, to have to beg you to see
    We're not all the same
(What a shame, what a shame)
'Cause we're not all the same
(What a shame, what a shame)
'Cause we're not all the same

This song has helped me immensely. I was sexually molested when i was 10 for about a month and a half. Noone can put into words how it makes you feel how it changes you forever. I am 31 now and still struggle with it. Because of it ive done things most people wouldnt. After it stopped i decided i wanted people to stay away so i stopped bathing and brushing my teeth.

It worked well, to well. I missed out on alot growing up. Pretty much just about every experience a growing kid can experience. Been homeless, still in financial trouble. But this song helps to remind me of the good things I have down. Graduated high school and college, joined the army, deployed to afghanastan, survived afghanastan, Tried to save a drowning man, unfortunately he is now in a better place! And that i am still here! THX SHINEDOWN! Keep making music and sending your messages!

This is a song that my husband and I play for his father, and have played it many times throughout the years. He lost his father near Christmas time, and his father was trying to make changes to be back with his family. He unfortunately suffered from pneumonia while in prison and had a seizure (supposedly, but no autopsy was done). I never met his father. But I know he'd be proud of the changes his son made to his life. While he isn't with us, he was still my husband's father & is remembered.

Gates ~ I had a brother Dan who died at 47. He died alone while I was in surgery. He drank himself to death. Never rose above his demons. Like your uncle, he never had a girlfriend, kids and never married. Your comment rang a familiar chord. I am the only one who knew my brother's pain. Now he's gone. I'm the only black sheep left. This song got me through a lot. lol got pushed to the razor edge somehow made it back. Some times you need to snap on others. sometimes you need to crawl up in a ball and let it out. Great song to do both with lol. 32 married with a daughter now. Finally got a spine. so if you're in a similar spot hang in there!
