      @northwestclass same. I just lost all of my cards at a festival for loose carrying. Now wallet binging. I’m enjoying the hunt but got any favorites? I’m very minimalist but want to trend away from a money clip for easy access. The thinner the better! :)

    I carry a Secrid wallet and can definitely say that you sadly were given a broken model; the mechanism is super smooth and properly retracts every time. Had it for four or so years now 😊

      Yeah, you might be right about the defective Secrid. Though even the Ekster wallets occasionally stick open. It could be the type of cards I put in.

    I like the gimmick but I'm cautious about the eject mechanism failing over time; whilst you're not having to deal with the tight compartments of a bifold, to me it still looks like it'd still be finnicky to retrieve the bottom level cards in the cascade due to the higher level ones.

    It would have been nice to see each wallet tested for its ability to hold cards in the box. The ejector wallet I have today requires that I keep 6 cards in the box or theuy fall out when tipped upside down. Unfortunately, I have had to replace three cards over the past year for this very reason.

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  Рік тому

      Good idea. I did a recent UA-cam video where I shook the Ekster Aluminum cardholder upside down pretty hard with just 3 cards and they stayed in, both when ejected and inside the case. Which wallet do you have?

    One test that was not covered here is how safely are cards held in the slider. For instance when given a sharp downwards move with some of these wallets, the cards fall out...

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  2 роки тому

      In my experience, most of them hold the cards pretty well when shaken, particularly when held at capacity. If you want to be absolutely sure, it’s best to stick with Ekster and Secrid. They’re the gold standards for pop-up wallets.

    Thank you for this video! Short but packed with lots of useful info. There is one question I've been trying to have answered in my quest for a functional wallet... How easy is it to get the cards in the middle of the stack out? The top seems easy but the rest seem they would have the same problem I have in a traditional wallet that staggers cards. They're just a pain to get out. Your thoughts?

  • @Benzknees

    What stops the cards from falling out the open end whilst in the 'closed" position?

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  2 роки тому +2

      Depending on the wallet, there is material built up on the sides that hold the cards pretty well. You can sometimes shake the cards out if you try hard enough, but usually they stay reliable inside in normal use.

    I got a wallet from pularys and it was the carbon fiber one, I was really hesitant on it since there wasn't any reviews on it and sure enough it was bad, the pop up cards was very smooth but level activated and the button kept being really locked into place and the carbon fiber was pulling to the point that it ripped and there was only a thin layer of carbon fiber and the rest was tough cloth, other than that the wallet was awesome, can't say about the other wallets since they mainly do leather for generations and I'm assuming the carbon fiber is new and they don't know any building techniques.

    By spring loaded, do you mean that the cards spring up after activation, or do you have to manually push up the cards, and then a spring retracts the lever into rest position?
    Edit: I had a $10 test wallet that I really like which released the spring when you activated the lever, spring out the fanned cards, and then pushing the cards back into the wallet reset the spring and lever. I've been looking for a similar replacement because my lever broke off, but I am looking for something that springs the cards out, rather than manually fans them and spring the lever back into rest position. It's kind of fun holding the wallet sideways and, with the click of a lever, auto-flinging my cards all over the table.

      Same bought a knock-off of Secrid for $13 and it broke after a month. So I just bought a authentic from Secrid’s website. It’s $89.95 but I know it’s legit. I’ve seen them on some Penn website for like $45 plus shipping so it might be worth it to check out. I probably would’ve used them and saved half the price almost. But at least I got piece of mind

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  2 роки тому +1

      With all the ejector mechanisms I’ve tested, the lever, button, or slider returns to position after you pop up the cards. I also like a low tech pull tab wallets for ejecting your cards (Distil makes a lot of them as do many others). With a pull tab, they don’t fan out, but they eject quickly with a simple pull. With some wallets, the pull tab is attached to elastic and pulls back into position. Others, you use you cards to reset the pull tab.

      Yes, but it’s really designed for 6. If you only carry a few cards and have an iPhone 12 or newer, I would recommend a MagSafe wallet that attaches to your phone. This way, you don’t have to carry a separate wallet. Here’s a post with some ideas: www.walletsurfer.com/best-magsafe-wallet

    I’ve heard Ekster’s mechanism doesn’t last and break’s quickly. Also, I’m not 100% sold on that Eco-leather… seems like a nice way of saying it’s a cheaper grain of leather. IMHO there is no reason to not use high grade leather unless people of the world stop eating meat… which will never happen. I think real leather is more Eco-friendly than using some simulated materials using nylon-plastic or whatever fake materials. I like Ekster look and design but I’m not sold on the longevity of their ejection mechanism… and it’s a little bigger than the Secrid. Overall Ekster and Secrid are the best quality I think

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  2 роки тому

      My long term use with the Ekster mechanism has been super positive. Ergonomically, I think it’s much easier and more fun to use than Secrid. But Secrid is also a great wallet.

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  Рік тому

      It depends on the wallet because they all have their own unique card ejection systems. They might shake out with some vigorous shaking, but they're not going to fall out on their own in your pocket.

  • @alecbuxton7634
    @alecbuxton7634 Рік тому +1

    I noticed that that among all the pop up models that you reviewed that none of them were vulkit while not being one of the best quality models they do a wide variety of models that
    Vary in layout from model to model and all of them are affordable as they are made in China for the affordable market and all sell between £20.00 to £30.00 compared to the top of the range ones like ekster which sell for around £70.00 to £80.00 and so are naturally better quality although pul gets a mention for being a bit more affordable while providing good quality but at the end of the day it comes down to how much someone is comfortable spending on a wallet

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  Рік тому

      I favor Ekster because the ejection system it is just so smooth and consistent. All of the pop up levers are slightly different in design for all card ejector wallets, in general. I find the the Ekster slider to be the most responsive and ergonomic-and over the years, reliable.

    Dumbest idea I have ever seen in a wallet design. I guess if a person is too lazy to open a wallet to get to the card it is ok.. but who is really that lazy?? I wanted to buy ekster but so many people complain about the push mechanism breaking in months and just breaking after less than a year along with "the push mechanism destroying the cards"

    • @WalletSurfer
      @WalletSurfer  Рік тому

      I can only speak from my personal experience over the past 4 years of using Ekster. I've found the ejection mechanism to be really reliable. There's definitely some friction between cards when they're ejected, but they're really not moving that far or that often. It's possible that the magnetic strip could be abraded. If someone is using cards with raised letters, that could definitely do some scratching over time. Nowadays (at least in the US), all newly issued cards are smooth.
