    So you are happy with the crystal clear enamel? I use the 1/8” thick baltic birch stars to give the union a 3D raised look but brushing on polycrilic takes forever since when the brush hits the stars it puddles against them then sanding between coats in every corner of 50 stars is way too frustrating. I like the look of the poly but needing something else that goes on smooth, clear and has a great glossy shine. TY

      I like the Rustoleum stuff, since making this flag i have shifted to the "Satin" instead of the crystal clear, i think that you would have an easier time with an aerosol can or a sprayer, if you are using the raised stars

    Thanks so much for this video! I made this on a larger scale for my dads 50th birthday and your video was so helpful. I was wondering if you had any advice on a problem I ran into. I know for your project you ended up spray painting the union since you used plywood but I really wanted the torched look so I used 1x12 common board and it curled up from the moisture which I didn’t anticipate (this was my first wood project) . I don’t have a shop like yours, I have minimal equipment so the curve left my final project a little wonky. I was able to correct the curve a little by clamping the union to some 2x4’s to try and level it out before I glued it all together but it didn’t do much. I was wondering if you had any suggestions? Maybe a different wood or some technique to avoid the curving?

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  4 роки тому

      Brianna Ciamaichelo gotcha, so unfortunately once it’s warped that piece is probably toast. I would suggest using the select pine (Lowe’s calls it premium pine) its harder wood that is much flatter than the common board and it comes in 1x12 as well. Not saying that the select stuff won’t warp, just a better chance it won’t. You can also try to force it by using dowels. I have a video about making a 5 foot flag that goes over that process. Let me know if that works out! Or if any of that helped!

      Brianna, sometimes when you torch one side it cups or warps and if you torch the back side it will usually help bring it back closer to flat. You may give that a try if you do another flag.

      @@Dhomuth23 Thanks so much for the tip. I actually just finished my second flag about two weeks ago and I did have a little better luck with the pine over common board. I also went a lot slower with the torching and soaked it in water and clamped it to a table afterwards to try and straighten it out even more. I’ll definitely have to try doing both sides next time!

      Haha thanks man, people have are very opinionated about these flags. Yes im just using glue, it is plenty strong, but creates problems of its own, like squeeze out amongst other things. For larger flags (5ft. and up) i uses some 3/8" dowels to help me align the thing, and to give it a little more strength, since they are much heavier. I have a video about a 5 footer i made using the dowels if you are interested. (ua-cam.com/video/mdTJn4jpQwc/v-deo.html)

    I wish the police would be content to fly the regular American flag. I don't want "civil rights groups" coming up with their own version of the American flag either. I also don't want the American flag "embellished" with rainbow colors for those with a rainbow mindset. I don't want an American flag with a lavender stripe. What I do want is one flag to unify us as individuals - not as competing groups vying for alliances - but one standardized flag to unify rugged individuals together as members of one nation under God. Shame on the police for departing from that vision.

      @@Workshop1776 I'm curious as to what point or points you disagree with. I'll spell out my viewpoints below and feel free to attack them if you feel so inclined I am conservative. I lean right. I love my country and the ideals under which it was founded. I love law and order. I believe police
      as a group are slightly higher than the mean for integrity and BLM folks are significantly below the mean. I hate it when folks get away with breaking the law whether they are cops or BLM marxists. Our country stands for the concept that government gets its power from the people. Our Founders and the founding documents they wrote said that rights transcend government and that people delegate their inalienable rights to government. I'd be extremely grateful if I could be a witness that could send a multitude of police 2 life imprisonment. I'd also be extremely grateful if I could be a witness to exonerate innocent police and free them from unjust imprisonment. I wish I could be a witness of the crimes of the rioters and ensure that as many of them as possible are maximally imprisoned.

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  4 роки тому +1

      So it seems you are making two different points; your first comment said that the Police shouldn't have their own American flag, in the same way that other civil rights groups shouldn't co-opt the their own American flag that represents their group. I disagree with that sentiment. Your main argument there, seems to be that it is dis-unifying, because we are all Americans, so I could pose a question, are you also against State flags? Is it alright to have State pride? Since, after all we are all Americans? It's the same kind of argument (in a much different vein) that would propose, that sports fans, should not be a fan of a particular team, simply because they like "Football" or "Baseball."
      Your second comment/point I don't disagree with (except for the being a witness part), I have said many times in these types of comments that in any organization, you will find good and bad people, especially an organization as large as the police. In my eyes the Police are Heros and should be treated as such, when one of them does something illegal, they should be punished.

      @@Workshop1776 We may have more in common than might have been assumed from the get-go. Of course I'm fine with States having their own on flags - especially since none of them are a distortion or embellishment of the United States flag. And I think I'm with you there on not wanting to be a witness of criminal activity. I suspect we both rather step in and stop the criminal activity rather than be a witness of it. As for heroes - I'm not going to behave as though cops are deserving of hero-status until they earn that distinction on an individual basis. I know a cop that served in Chicago. He said that there are a lot of dirty cops there. He gave specific examples of the things he had seen. What they did was disgusting. He did not join them in their immoral and illegal pursuits and they hated him for it. They were not behaving as Heroes. They did not deserve to be treated as Heroes.

      @@Workshop1776 I think people were searching for a good explanation of why this is a divisive and fascist/authoritarian symbol symbolizing a police state. Blindly submitting to the police and authority. People buy this up because they're fire fighters or police and they're proud, or they have family, and they're proud. Too much pride and nationalism, which can be a form of pride called patriotism can build up and lead to fascism, and these types of divisive symbols are introduced to the masses by design, and people buy in to them as planned.. This is nothing new. Just read about the third reich. I'm a historian and militaria collector.
