    I have made numerous Flags, but never used the dowels. Gonna give it a try on the next one. Thanks for your service to our country. (retired LEO and DD214 holder)

      Awesome! I have found that the dowels aren't a game changer, it just makes the alignment during the glue up less stressful, and keeps it a little more flat. Let me know how it goes! and Thank you for your service as well.

    Cool flag man. I like how you make things very repeatable, bring it to the basics and limited amount of tools.

    Question about the minwax colors. I asked the people at lowes and ace hardware but they both told me there is no Scarlett or true blue. Are there alternate colors you would suggest?

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  2 роки тому +2

      They must have discontinued that particular line. My best advice would be to get small sample cans and do some tests, and see what gets you close to the colors you want. Also Home Depot sells Varathane stains that work well

      Union- Semi Transparent NAVY or Semi Transparent Denim Blue.....Stripes- Semi Transparent CRIMSON or Semi Transparent BARN RED. I can't say which of the blue or red looks the best...I made my 2 first flags using one blue n one red n then next one the other blue n red and I use these 2 as my display flags for people to pick which they think looks best.

    Awesome work. How big are the stars? Is there a 50 star union template this size available?

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words, If you are asking if I make template for these, unfortunately, Im not really set up for that at the moment. There are tons of templates available on amazon. The size of the Union for the 5' flag is 23.75"x17.5" so whatever stencil you are considering buying should be around this size.

    • @NewYorkMetalDetecting
      @NewYorkMetalDetecting 3 роки тому +1

      @@Workshop1776 Thank you for your response. Is there a reference or website that gives the union size reference for each size flag? I have the union size reference for some smaller flags. I really interested in making a 4' flag and a 6' flag and just need those union sizes.

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  3 роки тому +1

      Im sure there are some out there, however i don't know what they are, I just do the math. I got you on the 4' and 6' ones
      4' - W 19" the height of the all the stripes is 2", making the union 14" tall
      6' - W 28.5 Stripe height is 3" (Union = 21" tall)

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  3 роки тому +1

      heres the formula if you want to make any other sizes
      1' flag = H 6.5" Union Width 4.5" Stripe Height 0.5"
      from there you can just plug in the width of the over all flag and it will change the proportions accordingly. its kid of hard do display it in this format, I usually use excel.

    If you run your torch beginning before one end of the wood and passing all the way, nonstop, past the opposite end, as if you were spray painting, you would instantly eliminate the spots where your "brush strokes" overlap.
    I'm liking the dowel idea, but I was also thinking about using pocket holes, which would eliminate the need for clamping.

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  4 роки тому +1

      Thats a good point with the torch, sometimes i just get lazy i guess. hahaha I have used pocket holes as well, and they are faster. Just wanted to try the dowel method, this also allows you the option to stain and engrave the other side and hang it vertically. If that is something the buyer might want. Thanks for the advice on the torch though, i really should be doing that way.

  • @drewmiles829

    Suggestion, I make these flags the exact same way, the only difference is how we burn the flags, I used to get those dark blotchy spots as well, but I figured out a way to completely eliminate them, set the stripes up on a stand horizontally facing you of course and take the torch starting on one end off of the wood and in a consistent motion move from one end to the other starting off the wood and ending off the wood the first pass probably wont show any burning but immediately make another pass the exact same way and you will see the burning start happening, after 3 or 4 passes the stripe will be burned the way I like them the more passes the darker the burn, you'll never have a blotchy spot again my friend

    How do you determine the size your union should be? In the event that you wanted to make a bigger or smaller flag. Is there a certain ratio you stick to?

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  4 роки тому +2

      ya, its a bit tricky, but i kind of figured out a formula that can be extrapolated to whatever size flag you would like to make
      -1ft flag dimensions-
      Width Height Union Width Union Height Stripe Height
      1' 6.5" 4.75" 3.5" 0.5"
      so if you want to make a 2' flag, just double all the other categories and so on. you can also change the 1' to 12" and figure out the ratio from there if you are going to do a a specific size that doesnt fall into the 1' 2' 3' etc.
      Hope this helps!

    That’s a massive flag!! Love it. Thanks for more details that’s very helpful. The hardest thing I have found is getting the correct union size with the stars to match. When your glueing things up and they bow you can always take and spray water or a damp cloth on the back and weigh it down for a day or so and it will take the bow out. That will work on all kinds of bowed boards. Keep up the great work. Off the wall question how long have you been collecting tattoos? Myself for like 20 years and I’m almost done with both of my sleeves.

    • @Workshop1776
      @Workshop1776  4 роки тому +2

    One more thing your using the caules wrong bro, you want one above and one beneath your project, it's easier on your glued joints to be pushed up in a large area instead of using the small surface area of your clamp to push all of the project up and flat
