I know everyone is enamored with Edward Norton, but Richard Gere's performance is so underrated in this film. Marty's reactions waiting for Roy to surface as the scene builds up is the key to it being as awesome as it is.
I've always admired Gere's acting. Not acting, so much but reacting. He's just excellent. His roles always feel lived in and natural. And very organic, not flashy.
The fact that if a lawyer did this in real life they'd probably be stopped because she's "leading the witness" somehow makes it feel much more intense because it shows how little those involved actually care about this man.

"Leading the witness" is trying to get the witness to say or act a certain way just to get what you want, whether it's true or not, whereas I think "Badgering the witness" is using aggressive or repetitive language to get them to say or do what you want. I don't believe she was the one to call him as a witness so her role would be that of cross examination in this scene, in an attempt to rebut the testimony he provided for Gere's character.

Yes! It's one of my favorite monologues ever. She's projecting a lot of her own frustrations onto Aaron's situation after she's had to deal with so much corruption and chauvinism the whole film, and probably her whole life. Her anger there is real and cathartic, and it seems to even catch herself off guard. Plus it's just excellent writing as she describes all the specific violent things Aaron did and makes it sound justified.

Playing this complex character is no easy feat even for other seasoned actors. Some say he deserved what he didn't get. Other say he got what he didn't deserved. But for all the things he didn't receive what he gave was a Goldstar performance. And what he's always had was pure talent.

there never was a roy either. the real aaron is the third boy we see in the end. "good for you marty" he orchestrated the whole thing, fabricating both stuttering altar boy and violent bully. you can briefly see the real aaron in the "prepping aaron" clip. Marty tells him "you're way ahead of the game" [the game of making people believe you're innocent] and for a brief, fleeting moment, the real aaron chuckles KNOWING how true that was.
Edward Norton is a badass and a great actor. I'm not a big fan of this film (so few courtroom dramas are done well) but his performance made it worth it.
This is just great drama! We all love to see it. In this case, the writing and the performances are so strong, you almost don't even know who or what to root for. You're just sucked into the high drama. It's a great feeling! :)
