I love how EA made Maddie a lot more likeable than I found her in the books. Yes, the flaws are still there but it's more obvious she has a gigantic heart behind it all.
Maddy is so very kindhearted. I'm kind of glad there wasn't more conflict between the two of them because you can obviously see how genuine Emma is even though she's reading from a speech...Emma needs somebody who can teach her to bounce back and keep a good spirit like Maddy.
She is so! But you must admit that this is an American Miss Bates' so she doesn't have to be Englishly reserved... Which means she's actually better than the one Austin wrote.
"You are, and always have been, a good kind person with the best of intentions, even though sometimes you make mistakes." What a comforting woman Maddy is.
Awww Maddie is the sweetest thing. So heartwarming to see Emma picking herself up and improving. You can see how she's really trying to change her ways and finally taking Alex's advice - including consultations!
Seeing as she's about to call Annie, my guess is she's found out about Jane and Frank and is freaked about telling Harriet, as she's under the mistaken impression that she likes him.
I love Maddie so much! She's such a good person, and I'm glad Emma and her are friends again. All good now............ALEX, PICK UP THE CALLS, ANSWER THE TEXTS, COME BACK BEFORE I SCREAM!
So Emma is finally taking financial advice from Maddie and she is considering going back to consultations. Alex would be so proud. And... Is B-Mart coming to install that software? But who would call him? Maddie? SPOILER ALERT. If next episode is about Annie telling the whole Frank-Jane situation, then Alex will come back after he knows about it himself. So I guess the hand kissing scene or something like it is not going to happen in EA. (But hey, Alex is coming back. I'm not complaining.)
This was so sweet! Love Maddy Bates. And love Emma's earnestness and the fact that, now that Alex is gone, she is staring to see her mistakes and truly desire to make amends. ALSO: that accounting software needs to be installed asap. B-Mart, you are needed!!!
Maddy is such an angel!! And I'm glad we got to see this interaction. All of the episodes from here on out are going to be tearjerker so aren't they? Glad I bought eight boxes of tissues!
I'll bet in the next episode Emma's going to hear that Alex did call, but only spoke to Harriet (simply because Harriet had called him and asked him to call back - but Emma doesn't know that).
Personally this was the most tear jerking episode. Emma admitting she was wrong and owning up to it was great. And Maddie's reaction. Maddie is such a great person. She forgave her and offered to help because she needed it. And Emma accepted it. All of these things are things that I want to work on myself: admitting when I was wrong, asking and accepting help, and not grudging people.
Trying this again, grumble grumble auto correct. I so appreciate that Emma takes the time to acknowledge Maddie's strengths and recognize where she (Emma) can learn from her (Maddie).
Don't worry Ryan, at this point you should just accept your behind-ness and watch at your own pace. You can start at the beginning with Victoria Frankenstein, M.D.
I felt like crying all over again. Maddie Bates is a wonderful human being. She's so amazing for being so nice to Emma. But I guess she knows that Emma knows she really screwed up this time. I'm still anxious about any news on Alex. Is he just gonna go awol like that? No near kisses on the hand?
MADDIE IS THE MOST WONDERFUL PERSON ON EARTH! So glad the two of them are on good terms again. I can't wait to see how Emma makes the rest of her amends.
I love Maddie's maternal side in this. I'm almost in tears. I always love it when she calls Emma "baby." The lady has a great voice. Very warm, sweet and caring.
I love Maddie. Yay for Emma becoming a humbler and more well-rounded businesswoman! And accounting software coming to Emma's computer--drumroll for the return of B-Mart! Sweet and understated performances. Again, I love Maddie. And how no one discussed the jams. Maddie was probably the person most amenable to hearing an apology, so Emma can work her way up to the more resistant ones, gathering confidence and practice along the way! . . . Which is interesting because IMO, Maddie is arguably the one Emma hurt the most, next to Alex.
I love how good Harriet is at remembering things! She said that in her application video - glad they're still showing that quirk and that it was actually relevant :) it just goes to show that Harriet has her own strengths that may be different from Emma's but also just as necessary! And Maddy is such a lovely person, but I agree that maybe Emma could've apologised a little more heartfelt. But actually, this way it does show how kind Maddy is and that she doesn't ask for an apology, just forgives Emma because she knows that she's a good person. I am starting to really miss Alex. COME BACK AND DO THE (BOOK SPOILER) NEAR-KISS HAND THING! You're not allowed to go and see Isabella and John until you've done that - I won't allow it!
I dislike Jane in this adaptation more than I did in others mainly because Emma actually did try to connect with Jane the only way she knew how. That's how Emma interacts with everyone but Jane just kept continually rebuffing her, maybe because she was jealous of Emma and frank? But Jane just seems like such a brat. Plus she was really unprofessional about maddies jams, like not even consulting your boss on that doesn't seem right cuz Emma is like the main creative person there.
I wonder does Jane eat thous awful jams? if not, then it was really nasty to propose those. But yes, I almost hate Jane in here, though I liked her in the book. She has no right to be angry and she should be shamed of herself, but maybe she is, I hope. Spoiler. In the book Jane is ashamed of herself and her actions.
Jane was trying to remain professional. She did in fact begin with kindness and try to rebuff Emma’s questions politely, but Emma refused to take the hint. Some people aren’t extroverts, it doesn’t make them “brats”. As her boss, it was Emma’s responsibility to take the hint and not be nosy
I can't say how much I love this show. The acting is terrific and the storyline is on point. I'm so happy with this episode and last week's. You guys are doing an amazing job.
Need. More. Maddy is so kind hearted I love how she forgave her straight away even though emma was seriously in the wrong. But damn... alex has been gone for over a week...... need him back soon I cant take this.
I love Maddie so much. She's so kind and sweet and forgiving to Emma. Anyone else wouldn't forgive Emma so easily. Maddie is definitely one of my favorite characters.
Love love love Maddie!! :) She (like Harriet) seems like so much more in this version than any other I've seen. Plus Nikea playing her makes her adorable!! :) :)
I'm glad that Emma is doing all of this to become a better person, even if she has the ulterior motive of getting Alex to return. We can already see that her tolerance levels have increased.
She wants her friend back, sure, I wouldn't say she's changing with an 'ulterior motive' of getting him back - sounds a bit Machievellian... I think she'd be happy if he even just spoke to her again… He's her rock - corny I know, but true, and Maddy's knowing eyes recognise that even better than Emma I feel.
Emma's humility and genuine desire to apologize to Maddie brought me to tears! Also, Maddie's response couldn't have been more gracious or forgiving! Aha, I loved this episode!!!
Does anyone else kind of feel like this is better than LBD? I'm more involved in the characters and I think the romance is well-paced (I mean, we don't have to wait until episode 50 to see Darcy, lol).
The thing is,I get why she has to apologise to Maddie and Jane for what she did at Boxx, but I don't get why Emma has to apologise so many times about how she treated Jane. To me, I don't see the damage Emma did to Jane. Okay the camera thing, but that's about it. If she didn't like it, then she should voice it out more. Actually, what Jane is keeping from Emma is worse. I think most of her resentment is from the jealousy and it is unfair to pin that on Emma.
I guess from Emma's point of view, she literally made someone feel so uncomfortable in the office that they resigned. She doesn't know about the jealousy aspect so as far as she's concerned it's all on her. I agree with you in one sense though, because most of Jane's issue (supposedly) was with the motivations of the company, which might be a problem but isn't really something Emma needs to apologize for. She should consider re-evaluating, sure, but it's not personally hurtful to Jane.
What Jane is keeping from Emma? I don't see any possible reason why Jane should be required to share with her boss (or ex-boss at this point) who she is dating. It's none of Emma's business.
Emma was really rude to her. Jane was really introverted and Emma didn't respect that. She didn't gave her privacy. She always was gossiping about her and that wasn't the smartest thing to do with a person. You have to gain her trust and with Jane, Emma didn't. She never really cared about being friends. Ok maybe that was the method she new but wasn't the one Jane wanted. Both sides are to blame of course because Jane didn't do much either but I can see why Jane is upset with her. Also it's not a great move to insult one of the people the like the most
I agree that Jane is absolutely not obliged to tell Emma who she is dating, but a lot of Jane's anger is over Frank which *given that Emma doesn't know* means Jane shouldn't really be directing anger over that towards Emma, and also that it isn't something Emma could even know to apologize for. She's also presumably very angry over Emma's treatment of Maddy (fair enough; I would consider resigning over just that) but Emma doesn't need to apologize to Jane over that - she needs to apologize to Maddy. The only thing she needs to apologize to Jane for is her invasion of privacy, rude treatment and hurtful gossip. Which, you know, totally fair. She was not welcoming to Jane at all. Even if you discount the invasion of privacy as Emma's attempt to get to know Jane and acknowledge that Jane made equally little effort and was closed off, Emma was still predisposed to dislike Jane and was always rude and dismissive of her.
Well I was only talking about what happened in the show because I haven't read the book (but soon) and I didn't have no idea it was for jealousy. But for me it is because like you said in your first comment, Emma knows she done wrong. That is why she apologized so much. That happens to me to, that you are still apologizing even when the person alredy forgave you. And well I would be jealous if my boyfriend treated my boss like that. I know it wasn't Emma's fault and Jane was totally wrong for making her accountable for that but I guess sometimes people do stupid things even if they are smart people.
Oh, this episode made me smile with and my tummy glow with warm feels :) Emma was so sincere and Maddy was so kind - finally a little breather from all the heavy drama :)
I find when people who know each other really well have a fight, they *both* gain more self awareness. Emma was definitely in the wrong, but Maddie was unaware of how Emma had viewed some of her actions.
Was this one of the best episodes so far? I think so :D I love how they handled this situation from the book - I always felt weird that in the book she literally didn't seem to mind at all, so it felt more like Emma hadn't done much wrong, whereas here she didn't need Emma to apologize because she knows her so well and knows she's sorry, but their relationship has still obviously changed. It's a much more fulfilling forgiveness than in the book, where there's still some work to do rebuilding their relationship, but that doesn't mean they won't still help each other out. Maddy Bates is a pillar of awesome.
I love love love love love love LOVE Maddie Bates. ❤ She's got such a warm, kind heart and she's like a universal mother. I felt like I was getting a hug from her too, haha.
I love how EA made Maddie a lot more likeable than I found her in the books. Yes, the flaws are still there but it's more obvious she has a gigantic heart behind it all.
That’s what Pemberly Digital does best! Take caricatures of characters and make them real human beings! Like Lydia, Harriet, Maddy Bates, etc.
Daaaw. Alex talks to Maddie about Emma. "Alex said you hated those."
You, sir, have an awesome user name.
I'm imagining Alex venting to Maddie and Maddie just sitting there with a knowing smile and it's really freaking cute.
Nice display pic ;)
Maddy is so very kindhearted. I'm kind of glad there wasn't more conflict between the two of them because you can obviously see how genuine Emma is even though she's reading from a speech...Emma needs somebody who can teach her to bounce back and keep a good spirit like Maddy.
She is hands down the best Ms. Bates I've ever seen in an adaption.
Emma: "Maddie you are a strong, independent business woman."
Me: "WHO DON'T NEED NO MAN."
"Yeah, it's not very decorative." That was an awesome line, and she did it brilliantly. Bahaha
The world would be a better place if it had more Maddies.
Seeing as she's about to call Annie, my guess is she's found out about Jane and Frank and is freaked about telling Harriet, as she's under the mistaken impression that she likes him.
I think Harriet is confessing her love for a certain someone...
That's all I can think of too, but she's talking to Harriet in the preview. They both look panicked and then Jane shows up.
I think it's about what happened at Annie's baby shower. Annie was not happy with Emma the last time they spoke.
Oooooo. I hope it's the Alex confession. I can't wait for that!
Maddy's such a wonderful character. It makes me so happy when she comes back - she just livens everything up a little.
How can someone not love Maddie?
She is the epitome of classy and gracious.
And happiness.
Maddie is literally a saint, I swear. Wonderful job on the episode, as always.
I love Maddie so much! She's such a good person, and I'm glad Emma and her are friends again.
All good now............ALEX, PICK UP THE CALLS, ANSWER THE TEXTS, COME BACK BEFORE I SCREAM!
I absolutely love the way the actress for Maddie portrays her. Everyone in this cast is so talented.
You just got me even more excited😂❤. I just love this adaptation.
Maddy's look at the camera when Emma pulls out her speech. Hilarious! This was so sweet. I want a Maddy. :)
"Yes you can. I'm offering." Maddie Bates is a hero.
Maddie said they need to install accounting software asap. B-mart appearing soon?
That what I was thinking!! Hopefully :)
That's exactly what I'm hoping will happen:)
This was so sweet. I'm glad Maddie forgave her but I'm so disappointed Alex didn't come back!
Never thought I'd say this, but Maddie is the best character in this adaptation!
Maddy is a wonderful human being.
Maddie is such a cool aunt. I wanna be that fun and forgiving when I'm an aunt.
This was so sweet! Love Maddy Bates. And love Emma's earnestness and the fact that, now that Alex is gone, she is staring to see her mistakes and truly desire to make amends. ALSO: that accounting software needs to be installed asap. B-Mart, you are needed!!!
This was seriously the sweetest episode. Oh my goodness. I love Maddie. :)
Maddy is such an angel!! And I'm glad we got to see this interaction. All of the episodes from here on out are going to be tearjerker so aren't they? Glad I bought eight boxes of tissues!
That Maddy Bates is a peach. Such a kind woman :,)
Maddy is above and beyond in graciousness and generosity.
I'll bet in the next episode Emma's going to hear that Alex did call, but only spoke to Harriet (simply because Harriet had called him and asked him to call back - but Emma doesn't know that).
good insight from maddie at 4:17
That was really wonderful of Maddie to offer her help. She's a great person. Where is Alex??? He needs to come back.
This is the nicest ver of Miss bates shes usually so annoying in all the vers except this in here she is so much likable
Maddie was super sweet in this. Made me tear :')
Trying this again, grumble grumble auto correct.
I so appreciate that Emma takes the time to acknowledge Maddie's strengths and recognize where she (Emma) can learn from her (Maddie).
Ack, I am so far behind.
Don't worry Ryan, at this point you should just accept your behind-ness and watch at your own pace. You can start at the beginning with Victoria Frankenstein, M.D.
I had a laughing fit when Maddy closed the iPad and asked, "What are you doing?"
I am CRYING. Maddie is beautiful
I think we've already seen the near-kiss on the hand. Remember the pinky swear?
Which episode was that again?
Episode 46-Cruel Intentions
ok that made me cry a bit. i love maddie so much. she is the sweetest person ever.
I was crying all over the place in this one. Something about loving people forgiving others who have been horrible to them just makes me weep.
I love Maddie. Yay for Emma becoming a humbler and more well-rounded businesswoman!
And accounting software coming to Emma's computer--drumroll for the return of B-Mart!
Sweet and understated performances. Again, I love Maddie. And how no one discussed the jams. I LOVE Maddy.
I'm crying happy tears. Thank goodness for the Maddie Bateses of the world!
I have to admit that I found Maddie kind of annoying when she was in the show earlier but I loved her in this episode
That's the whole point, and I'm so glad they managed to carry it off so well into modern times! :)
Agree. We actually grow with Emma. We get irritated with Maddie at first until we realize how great a person she is
I really like this Maddie...she comes off so much better than in the movie adaptations I've seen.
Spoiler.
In the book Jane is ashamed of herself and her actions.
Not everybody likes that approach
Jane was trying to remain professional. She did in fact begin with kindness and try to rebuff Emma’s questions politely, but Emma refused to take the hint. Some people aren’t extroverts, it doesn’t make them “brats”. As her boss, it was Emma’s responsibility to take the hint and not be nosy
This actually made me tear up. Brava, ladies.
Great episode, but I miss Alex terribly! Maddie's sweetheart, I didn't expect her to forgive Emma so soon, but I'm glad she did :)
BLOODY AWESOME MADDY PERFORMANCE! heart rending blend of stiffness and openness and just...wow!
The last three videos have made me cry. Two of them because I was sad.
This one? This one made me happy.
Love Harriett's look!
I can't say how much I love this show. The acting is terrific and the storyline is on point. I'm so happy with this episode and last week's. You guys are doing an amazing job.
Maddie is adorable!
Great episode! I love how Maddie is portrayed and that Emma changed her mind and that she's still hoping Alex would show up and asking about him...
Need. More.
Maddy is so kind hearted I love how she forgave her straight away even though emma was seriously in the wrong. But damn... alex has been gone for over a week...... need him back soon I cant take this.

What a beautiful redemption
Emma's humility and genuine desire to apologize to Maddie brought me to tears! Also, Maddie's response couldn't have been more gracious or forgiving! Aha, I loved this episode!!!
I kept waiting for Alex to come through the door.
Genuinely sobbing at this point in my rewatch
Does anyone else kind of feel like this is better than LBD? I'm more involved in the characters and I think the romance is well-paced (I mean, we don't have to wait until episode 50 to see Darcy, lol).
No.
I prefer this to LBD as well.
***** sameeeee. you described exactly what I was feeling
Maddie you are the best. Everyone should adopt your philosophy.
The thing is,I get why she has to apologise to Maddie and Jane for what she did at Boxx, but I don't get why Emma has to apologise so many times about how she treated Jane. Now Maddy just made me tear up. Much better acting in this episode
MADDIE BATES IS THE BEST HUMAN OKAY.
God I love Maddie she is such a lovely person
Loved this episode....Emma's apology and Maddy was so sweet and kind... can't wait for Monday!!!
Maddie reminds me of Melanie Wilkes in Gone With The Wind. A truly good person with a heart the size of Texas. What an angel!
I love Maddie. She has such a good heart
There she is the Emma we all know and love Alex would be happy to see you thrive :)
Oh, this episode made me smile with and my tummy glow with warm feels :) Emma was so sincere and Maddy was so kind - finally a little breather from all the heavy drama :)
I wish there had been more of an apology from Emma. Also, Maddie seemed way different to the way she has been previously...
Perhaps it's because if the tension between the two after Boxx. I mean, she may be kind but Maddie still got hurt pretty bad.
That's true... It's just like night and day.
I find when people who know each other really well have a fight, they *both* gain more self awareness. Emma was definitely in the wrong, but Maddie was unaware of how Emma had viewed some of her actions.
That's true also. I agree.
I cried watching this, literally bawling my eyes out.
Oh man, Harriet's floral pants were waaaay to 90s for my liking, lol! Another wonderful episode!!
This epi just made me love Maddy even more.
Maddie is so darn likeable haha more likeable than in the book even. Can't wait to see the convo with Alex O+O
I want the almost hand kiss! I wonder If they're gonna keep that, but it would be awesome if they did!
I really love 21st Century PD Maddie! The other WAS grating. This one is sweet as her special Chardonnay mustard with honey!
Omg Maddie is so adorable, soft and sweet T.T
kuddos to the actress for making her so lovely!!
This episode just makes me love Maddie even more!!!
So in Clueless is this the part where Cher tells Lucy she doesn't speak Mexican, then Josh tells her she's a brat and she feels bad afterwards?
Yes!
Mrs. Bates is so much more lovable here than the book. Love it!!
maddie is such a wonderful person, to be not only that forgiving but that helpful and caring is incredible. Team Maddie Bates forever!
yup
maddie is my favorite
Was this one of the best episodes so far? I think so :D
I love how they handled this situation from the book - I always felt weird that in the book she literally didn't seem to mind at all, so it felt more like Emma hadn't done much wrong, whereas here she didn't need Emma to apologize because she knows her so well and knows she's sorry, but their relationship has still obviously changed. It's a much more fulfilling forgiveness than in the book, where there's still some work to do rebuilding their relationship, but that doesn't mean they won't still help each other out.
Maddy Bates is a pillar of awesome.
Aww...Maddie. Really glad that got sorted out pretty quickly. :)
Maddy is perfection.
Maddie is so amazing.
I kinda wish there was more done for the apology. I don't know, kinda lacking? I felt more for the Romola Garai version.
I LITERALLY SAW THIS, SCREAMED AND WENT STRAIGHT TO GRAB THE POPCORN!
I love Maddie's top. SO MUCH.
I love love love love love love LOVE Maddie Bates. ❤ She's got such a warm, kind heart and she's like a universal mother. I felt like I was getting a hug from her too, haha.
Okay, now I've cried three episodes in a row!!
Maddy makes my heart melt. :-)
I cried and cried through this whole freekin episode
