What a wonderful, underplayed work. Huge props to Hilary Hahn, who has been championing both new music and these somewhat forgotten gems throughout her career. She could fill concert halls all over the world playing Mendelssohn, Brahms and Sibelius until the cows come home, but she consistently chooses surprising and rewarding programs.
3rd time listening. I think it's just tremendous. I wouldn't say it is a uniquely original concerto because it does rely on conventions that Beethoven and Mendelsohn had already established, but it's so accessible. And Hillary plays the Piss out of it. Sorry for that but I've been binging Slow Horses and Jakson Lamb has sort of invaded my consciousness. I must say however that I have been listening to violin concertos for 40 years and I don't seem to get the jist of most of it. I don't get Heifetz or Oistrakh or even Itzhak, but Hillary has somehow made all this wonderful music meaningful to me, beginning with the Mendelsohn, and then the Beethoven. Even Paganini, which I really don't care for. And needless to say she has interpreted Bach better than anyone since Glenn Gould. What a treasure she has been to me and probably the World.
Apparently bad conductor but great composer, many people specially the Russians consider that Glazunov as an antithesis of Tchaikovsky , which works are considered much more European and not Russian , but at least in this concert the Glazunov feelings are totally European (that is my impression) , as if it were may be Lalo, Bruch, etc, and even it is written in just 20 min, nothing strange in that time. Great interpretation of maestra Hilary Hahn , Semyon Bychkov and WDR orchestra , and thanks for that wonderful piece
I almost agree with your point. I believe that there are not many intonations from Russian folklore in this piece. Additionally, the theme of "finale" is purely Western with its three-part rhythm and intonation. Russian folk music has very long musical phrases, which is typical of Russian music due to the vastness of Russia. This, in turn, influences how Russians perceive the world, as it can be seen in both folk and classical music.

Not only is Hillary Hahn playing beautiful but miraculously she has dark hair and is young again. From 2015.

We're glad that you enjoyed it 😊
No doubt about it, hilary hann by all means is the best violinist in the world this days, for me she is the "new oistrakh"
She certainly was in 2008
J'adore ce concerto pour violon. Ma meilleure amie d'enfance me le jouait sans cesse...
Merci 🤗
Hilary Hahn IS the Violin.
Just like Frank Peter Zimmermann 😏🎻🎊🔝😅
My two all time favourites 🤗❤️

Thanks to Bychkov this concert has a vital sound
Perfection!! In all sense
Thank you so much!
