The voice of Paul Carrack, a class act, and one you might have heard on songs by Mike & The Mechanics (The Living Years and Silent Running) and Squeeze (Tempted). They were one-hit wonders here in the UK. One striking thing about this absolute choon is that it only really has the one verse!
Interesting tidbit... the lead singer of Ace on this is also the lead singer of Squeeze on the song "Tempted" AND the lead singer of Mike and the Mechanics on the song "Silent Running." Not to mention his own solo stuff including "Don't Shed a Tear."
According to Wikipedia this got to No. 3 as a song in the USA in 1974. I was well into Prog by that time, but I do definitely remember this song on the radio.
Such a fine song. Great back story. It is written to sound like a love relationship breaking up, but in fact, it is about a bass player cheating by......looking for another band behind their backs. LOL “Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else.” ― Will Rogers
if you want to hear an incredible 70's group and song, the group is Player and the song is " Baby come back" you two will be blown away, I'm sure the NicknLex family will agree.
A pure 70s classic, Paul Carrack such a great voice, of course he played with Steve Hackett ( Genesis ) and Mike and the Mechanics ( Genesis) a brilliant vocalist. It's a pure 70s iconic track like Player, Baby Come Back.
I went to a huge concert in Buffalo NY in 74 or 75, and dig this line up - Alman Brothers, J Giles, Yes and Ace! This was a one hit wonder band, and this cut was atypical. Great memory! Peace - from the interior mountains of British Columbia.
Some of the Atlanta Rhythm Section's hits are now considered part of the Yacht Rock genre too (So Into You, Imaginary Lover, Spooky). Very smooth stuff
Paul Carrack the lead singer had a long career singing and song writing. This song was written about the bass player who the rest of the band found out had been considering defecting to another band. It makes a great hard edged love song, but it's about loyalty to your friends. I'm very pleased you are reintroducing "How Long" to a new generation.
My generation was so spoiled. All the incredible music that most of us took for granted and thought it would never end. Now we have Rap and Hip Hop, how exciting.
We took it for granted cause we thought that it would never change, because great melodic music with harmonies was the standard, so many great singers, songwriters and musicians, and all of them great live performers also. It is great that young people like these two are exploring it and keeping it alive, they could be saying “ oh all that old music is so boring “ 😄
@@Lovejazz01 If they said "That old music is so boring" no one would watch their show. Anyone with taste knows this music was the golden era of rock/pop in America.
Besides "Ace", Paul Carrack was a vocalist in a few bands : Squeeze ("Tempted"), Mike and the Mechanics ("The Living Years"), The Bleeding Heart Band (Feat. Roger Waters - "Folded Flags"), plus his own solo stuff. Such a smooth, silky voice.
Since you mentioned roger waters, Paul also did a great vocal guest spot at Roger's original Berlin Wall Show from 1990. "Hey you". Fantastic as always
@@MrAitraining That's true. I remember when Waters announced the concert. I came very close to buying tickets to the show, but I settled for buying the CD instead… it cost a lot less than the flight to Berlin (from Montreal) along with hotel and show tickets! (lol)
Paul Carrack (lead vocalist for Ace) has a unique accomplishment. He reached the Top Ten as lead vocalist for three different groups in three different decades: [1] Ace - How Long (1975), Squeeze - Tempted (1981), Mike + The Mechanics - Over My Shoulder (1995).
...Finally ! I have not seen anyone react to this...Thanks So Much! There is a longer version (of course!) , almost 15 mins and it is WOnderful! I remember when it first came out, such a cool groove! Keep on y'all! OH, the song is about the bands bass player...he was being courted by another band...At least that is what I heard, lol~ More early Doobies!
When in 1974 I first listened to this song, I could swear it came from the WestCoast, but actually it was from the UK, and Paul Carrack, I watched him in 1971 in Germany with Warm Dust and later he got fame with Mike and The Mechanics and successful solo stuff. This song got so smoothy vibes , it is so catchy !
OMG another classic childhood memory of my favorite music from the radio back in the early 80s Everybody else who loves ACE has sayed what needs to be. Vive Paul Carrack!!! 7:10- I remember this genre as *easy listening* rather than yacht rock…
The term wasn't coined yet. But in retrospect it definitely fits the mold for Yacht Rock. For me, Yacht Rock is a good thing., but back then that term would have gotten my a bit miffed.
*Lex the bass player will love to learn that the song was inspired by the bass player in the band moonlighting (cheating) with another band.* 😂 Oh, and Yacht Rock is a 21st Century term. No one called it that in the 20th Century, and I mean no one. I love both Yacht Rock and the term. But then I also love disco, which you guys need to start listening to since it was the one great new genre of the decade that also dominated the 2nd half of the 70s.
Totally agree with every point you made. Well said. Thank you for saying it. I was also going to say something about the story that inspired the tune, which has to do with their bass player negotiating with another band.
It was called Yacht Rock in the mid to late 80's. Believe me... The boss' young spoiled son who got a job he wasn't qualified for where I was working as a young civil engineer called the AJA album Yacht Rock and I almost took him outside and let him have it. Luckily I kept my temper and realized he was actually praising the album not knowing that the term back then was actually derogatory.
I just found a list of one hit wonders on Wikipedia. Pretty interesting. This one is on there. I imagine all of them are probably good songs. I like this one even though in the '70s I was not in to soft rock. I was busy listening to Yes, Genesis, ELP, Chicago, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Van Halen, Kansas, The Cars, Styx, etc.
Don’t focus on “Ace”. The STAR here is the unmatched SOULFUL voice of Paul Carrick!!!! In bands like Ace, Mike and the Mechanics, and Squeeze, among MANY others (see Wikipedia) Mr. Carrick has one of the PREMIER soulful voices of all time!
Wow how wonderful!! Though another person said they saw that tour and the Yes fans booed Ace off the stage! 😱 Great to see you here Bob!! Have a wonderful holiday and great New Year!!
The reason you really "heard" this song is because of Paul Carrack's voice... Yes, Ace is a one hit wonder but Paul Carrack went on to sing on hits by Squeeze, Mike and The Mechanics among others... He could sing the phone book and it would be a hit...
The very first time I saw a reaction video from you guys, I posted a comment suggesting you give this song a listen. Glad you got around to it. Great song.
The great Paul Carrack...sang Tempted while in Squeeze, wrote I don't want to Hear anymore for the Eagles, and now part of Eric Claptons touring band. Seen him more than a few times and he never disappoints.
Great song! Many people think it's about being unfaithful in a marriage, the bass player was playing with another band and Paul Carrack, the lead vocalist and keyboard player found out!
Although widely interpreted as being about infidelity, the song was in fact composed by lead singer Paul Carrack upon discovering that bassist Terry "Tex" Comer had been secretly working with the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver.
Years back, I was watching the movie 'Invincible'. In a bar scene this song was playing in the background. It was a perfect match for the scene. Also it brought back fond memories of me studying or doing homework while listening to the radio. Did not know it at the time. I was blessed to be in this time period for music and life in general.
I knew this song when it was released and it's such a great tune by a great singer. Listen to early Waterboys like December from first album their first albums are brilliant.
Hey guys what a great find. Very smooth. I loved the guitar solo. Reminded me of Who’s That Lady by the Isley Brothers. And yes Hall and Oates. Rich girl. I did stage crew for them in college.
☺ Harmonies were a big part of so much, from Beatles to Motown. Sound greats by the likes of The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Spinners, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Smokey Robinson And The Miracles .../ Thankfully there was no such pitch correction back then. Sheeesh
This and Tempted (w/Squeeze) are the songs Paul Carrack is best known for... I first saw him perform both of these songs when Squeeze opened for Elvis Costello and the Attractions.... This was my first time seeing the Attractions and coincidently my final time seeing them, the opening act was Nick Lowe and his Cowboy Outfit... featuring Paul Carrack on keyboards and, yes, he played those two songs again.... a nice little surprise both times Cheers!
The whole album is brilliant. I still have a car playlist with six of it’s songs in it. Sniffin‘ about, 24 Hours, Why, Time ain‘t long. „No Future in your Eyes“ from the second album is another gem. Thanks und Frohe Weihnachten (You also know Paul Carrack as lead singer for Mike and the Mechanics - golden voice)
This does take me back. Have the vinyl. I guess its called Yacht rock now. Just heard for 1st time The Dip "Fill the cup". Reminded me of this Era's southwest country feel.
Wow! Never knew the name of this band! Definitely heard this song many times on the radio! Brings back some memories! As for where to go next with this band, I have no clue. Pretty sure I thought it was a 1 hit wonder situation! Thanks for sharing! Maybe we will discover another gem of a band! The vocalist . Chefs Kiss! 😂 sending love to everyone here! Merry Christmas!!❤
I saw Ace open for Yes in 1976. That was the solos tour. They each did excerpts from their solo albums including the wonderful song from Alan White's album ramshackled that Anderson sang called Song of Innocence. Squire did Hold out your hand with Jon playing bass! The last Encore was the rarely played Beatles song I'm down. Those Yes shows were the soundtrack of my life. ✌️😎
In addition to his work with various bands, he had a good solo career that includes 4 Top 40 solo hits in the 80's. Another fine example of Brit boys who excel at blue-eyed soul.
The first time I ever did this song two years ago on Karaoke Night, the ladies over 55 in the bar went nuts. Everybody came up to me afterwards and remarked how much they loved that song but not a one of them could remember who performed it. Unfortunately, none of them recognized the name of the band even after I told them it was Ace! Another great reaction to another great song, you guys!
The gold you found as some have mentioned is Paul Carrack. I saw Paul in 1981 when he teamed with Rockpile for a concert. Yeah, Rockpile look them up. You will find Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Look them up. 2024 is the 50th Anniversary of the song (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding. Written by Nick who first recorded it with his band Brinsley Schwarz. Later recorded by Elvis Costello and produced by Nick Lowe. Elvis had the monster hit. Paul had 4 hits with 4 different bands. Joe
For many years after its initial release, you could not get this album. It was unavailable in the U.S. for years, but for some reason it was available in Japan. Then came streaming services, and vinyl started to become popular again, and it came back. Great bass line, unusual yet lush and beautiful harmony on the refrain, a great tune.
Imagine how much better if they didn’t have to stick to the 1970s 3 minute AM radio-play time standard. Song could have gone another 3 minutes with awesome instrumentals and been so much better.
I don't know if u were watching the live performance or no but check it out a one hit wonder but it is incredible lot's of flash backs for me what a time what a era.
Hall and Oats.....yes. That wonderful chord change makes this tune. It really is a tasty hook. Soft, pop-rock can still be very well written. LOVE yacht rock! or is it yacht rot?
This "Yacht Rock" era with bands like Ace, the Doobies, Hall and Oates, ect. are an extension of the singer songwriter/folk wave of the early 70s .....ie James Taylor, Jim Croce, Carol King, Dobie Gray, .......The advancements in electric pianos and synths all through the 70s kept producing wave upon wave of "New sounding" multi instrumental "slow or soft rock".
What you found there is one of them there 70's Male soft-rock bands. They go well with, Poco, Pablo Cruz, Ambrosia, Bread, Hall and Oates, Al Stewart, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Exile, Andrew Gold, Player and literally dozens of other similar sounding bands.
I love yacht rock too! My understanding is the song is about a band member who suddenly left them for another band. They found out later it had been planned for a while. Therefore, how long has this been going on?
Paul carrick was also the lead singer in mike and the mechanics classic song and 50 years old i love the chotds the rythm of the song amazing once again thank you nick n lex for playing these classics from ian in the UK

Nothing wrong with “Yacht Rock”. I’ve loved this song since I was a kid. There’s something to be said about music that is straight-forward. It’s just enjoyable to listen to.
I first heard this at the age of 14. All these decades later, I still love this song and IMO still sounds fresh. Great reaction y'all! Try "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You" Robert Palmer, y'all would love it!
this song is a classic for me because of lead singer paul carrack. his lovely, distinctive voice also really shines on squeeze's hit "tempted", which i know you'll love. paul is a bit of a vocal journeyman with multiple hits with multiple bands, never having more than one smash with each group lol.
Nick & Lex, here is one that you may find pleasable. "Crei"(English version) David Salazar. ua-cam.com/video/PGuDDUlE7yg/v-deo.html He is from La Espanola New Mexico, the song is from 1979.
In the mid 70s Ace opened for Yes who were doing their Relayer tour. I saw them in Roosevelt Stadium in Newark NJ. The stadium was filled with Yes fans and fanatics who didn't want to see Ace, and the gave Ace a terrible reception. It was so bad that Chris Squire came out on the stage to ask the crowd to be polite to the members of Ace. Of course it didn't work, so Chris shrugged his shoulders and left the stage. After a few songs, Ace left with a Fuck you to the crowd. An interesting Yes anecdote.
One of my favorite 70's songs...couldn't agree with you more about this song! PLEASE please please listen to INCOGNITO.....this is not for me, but for the two of YOU! You WILL thank me, I promise!!!
hahahahaha.....this was one of my favorite songs back in the day AND I have never heard of a band named Ace. I don't know who I thought this was back then.

You guys are so entertaining to watch. I love how into the music you get.
Have you done Brandy by Looking Glass?
Thank you for your kind words and support!! We haven’t done that yet!!
You are right - it’s very Hall & Oates, isn’t it. A fabulous song. I think it was a one hit wonder for Ace, as I don’t remember any others by them.
Vocalist Paul Carrack you have done before Nick. One of my favorite song to sing along to in the car. It’s been on my play list since it came out.
I first heard this at the age of 14. All these decades later, I still love this song and IMO still sounds fresh. Great reaction y'all!
Try "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You" Robert Palmer, y'all would love it!
The vocals are Paul Carrack who was with Sqeeze, then Ace ,some solo stuff and then with Mike And The Mechanics lots of great musics
I cracks me up that it's so easy to think the song is a about a cheating romantic partner, when in reality it was about the bands moonlighting Bassist
Good tune ,many memories, the singer also is the lead singer for Mike and the mechanics 👍🏻👍🏻
this song is a classic for me because of lead singer paul carrack. his lovely, distinctive voice also really shines on squeeze's hit "tempted", which i know you'll love.
paul is a bit of a vocal journeyman with multiple hits with multiple bands, never having more than one smash with each group lol.
Great song, great review and it does sound like Hall and Oates, lol😂
Always thought this was a group named Pablo Cruz
Vocalist is Paul Carrick.
Sang in Mike Rutherford, from Genesis Band, Mike and The Mechanics.
Sang Living Years.
Ronnie SCOTLAND 😊
I actually bought this album back in the day because this song was so great. The album stank!
I saw them open for the first concert I ever saw…Doobie Bros, Chicago and Steely Dan
😱!!! What a lineup!!!
Paul Carrack could sing the phone book...
Paul Carrack has a golden voice.
Truly.
Nick & Lex, here is one that you may find pleasable.

He is from La Espanola New Mexico, the song is from 1979.
😱!! That’s terrible!! I would’ve thought Yes fans would be more polite and open!
You guys rock
One of my favorite 70's songs...couldn't agree with you more about this song! PLEASE please please listen to INCOGNITO.....this is not for me, but for the two of YOU! You WILL thank me, I promise!!!
the lead singer of this group, Paul Carrack was also the lead singer of Mike and the mechanics, Mike as in Mike Rutherford of Genesis
hahahahaha.....this was one of my favorite songs back in the day AND I have never heard of a band named Ace. I don't know who I thought this was back then.
🤣 You’re not alone!! Several have mentioned the same!!
Happy Holidays and thanks for all of your support through the years, we appreciate you! ❤️
good old song.... Paul Carrack is the lead and still performing, here on YTube. . . .
