Somebody putting in a Drain that has such a small entry port for water and debris such as this, oughta have their head examined! Let's see if the "person" that installed that small of a Drain has anything in their head, brain-wise!
This is the same drain grate as was on every drain in the town I grew up in, can't fit a ten speed tire in it-- I tried. They are crazy heavy! At least an 1-1/4" thick cast iron.
I'd love to do this here in NL but the drains are actually properly maintained and the streets are often cleared of leaves by sweepers. :) The water will never beat us. Never.
I’m totally gonna start doing that. I think there is a tool that is shorter that will fit in my SUV storage space... I don’t want to answer questions about why I have boots and a rack, lol. I always keep multiple gloves and safety glasses in my rig, cuz I like gardening.
My reply is getting closer to 2 years since this post, but be sure to also have some hi-vis clothing on, as rainy weather makes it more difficult to see you working on clearing any clogs. Yellow/orange with reflective stripes can do a lot to keep you safer.

I live in Bedford, England and I've tried scraping the crap off of the grate. The problem is there is about 2 feet of mud under the grating completely clogging the pipe. Its like the council hasn't cleaned them in 5 years, and they wonder why we get floods! Hopefully be moving to Boston, MA soon and will help with this.
No...the people who thought of the drains are the people that see the big picture. Two of the drains were in a CROSS WALK. You can't have some wide grate over a crosswalk drain dude. If you need me to spell out why then...you are SOL.

There are more than enough examples in Post 10 clips of poorly designed drainage. Yep, don’t mix a drain and a cross walk (whichever way round they came - your responses are valid), and half the time they don’t even need a drain if they designed-in a lower kerb and overspill (avoiding the potential problem in the first place). But they have a code, they follow it, and they’re protected by some union, so they get paid regardless of competence. It happens in all professions, across the globe; a sad reflection (in the flooded street) of human indifference to the big-picture of the world around them.

that's so weird, whenever i design drain layouts i put big drains in the lowest spots and when there are pedestrians there are specific types of angled drains to use so they don't endanger people while not having holes to small to remove debris. This designers also has a serous lacking of drains. with your rain levels you should have a drain almost every six feet. also how did they get approved to put a drain in the crosswalk i would be fired on the spot for something that dumb. and ill share the love, the man who designed that road to put the crosswalk at the lowest point in the area, cmon man your making my road engineers over here cringe so hard

most municipalities in my state have been forced to implement a ADA transition plan to compliance with ADA. this appears to be a rush job to make the crossing compliant, but they failed to move the drainage upstream of the crosswalk.

Like another person said, if the drains were there first, then why put a crosswalk around them? It's not that difficult to put a crossing a few feet back from the drain. Looking at the placement of the crossing, they had plenty of room to the corner of the block to place it. This is simply municipal indifference and incompetence at ... play. I was going to say "at work", but clearly no one was working on this.

post 10 I’m no expert like yourself, but the rain storms that we have now are more bigger and more intense not to mention in my part of the world the budget priorities have changed and the leaves do not get cleared up like they use to. I guess that no drain is a perfect design as situations are always changing and that then makes the design outdated....??? But these problems make for interesting content to be filmed. And you do a great job regardless...!!!

This can be accomplished in two ways, the stupid way is building a whole new drain system 2 feet away from the current one. The smart way is to repaint the road and shift the curb so that the crosswalk is 2 feet away from where it currently is.
True story..I have a stream running at the end of my property,my township wants to call it a “ drain “ ..they sent me a letter saying it needs to be inspected and maybe cleaned out to the tune of 10,000 dollars! I certainly wish you didn’t live so far away! I am in Canada.

We’ve heard of “tornado chasers”. Do you just drive around areas that have rain forecast and look for floods? You seem to have fresh floods to battle at least once a week.

Regular attention to drainage system's an culverts need daily maintenance... Winter periods and heavier rain is hard to keep up with... Dryer periods through out the year are the best times for volunteer workers like post 10 to save business and homes from colder days and wetter periods from flooding... Saves lives also... The skinny greats are used in crosswalks and bike paths so that wheelchairs and bike tires will not get stuck (easily) in the greats.
