Oscar Winner Rita Moreno | Best Supporting Actress for 'West Side Story' ►► ua-cam.com/users/shortsdij4ZiTkrh8
She did NOT expect to win. Which makes her speech all the more fun to watch.
Both Rita Moreno & George Chakiris won Golden Globes. WEST SIDE STORY was a massive hit. The #1 movie of 1961. They were the frontrunners for their respective categories.
She still did not expect to win. The lady said so herself.
She was heavily favored to win even if she may not have felt sure herself.
Who did she think would win?
@@musicaltheatergeek79 front runners and those heavily favored lose. Like, literally all the time.
And 60 years later, Ariana DeBose earns her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the same role! 🤩
And extremely deserving! She blew me away! Her performance is rich and sublime!
The third character to have two actors, two Oscars and the first one to win in the same category
@@Bjork4s beside the joker, whos the obter chatacter?
@@thecatjonas The Godfather's Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro)
And Rita Moreno starred in both of them.
And 56 years later, same dress, same beautiful vibe and energy: look at her presenting the award for best foreign language film and you will see
Andrés Mauricio That was one of the most surprising highlights of the night.
I wish she should have made an important acceptance speech. In sure there were people who had supported her in her acting career. And what about her heritage?
She has expressed regret about her not having done that. I know she could have given a great speech but back then it was normal to see people making short speeches.
Andrés Mauricio That’s Fair. I’m back here because Rita is going to be part of the movie remake of West Side Story
Can't go wrong with a classic.
Rita is actually the first Latina women to win an Oscar
and one of the few (16 people) to have the egot... emmy, grammy, oscar and tony awards
Wow really
@@TheGeorgio64 we Latinos only have that small amount of people who won those awards? Ayyy I wasn't aware of that
You're probably right about that .
And Evelyn Hugo
Best Acceptance Speech Ever!!!!!
Si, al grano
I'm a big fan of Judy Garland, but Rita Moreno made a fantastic performance and definitely deserved this. It's still a shame Judy never won an Oscar though.
She should have won for a Star Is Born without question, as Groucho Marx stated about her losing to Grace Kelly, "It was the greatest robbery since Brinks." She was the most exceptional all around talent ever and the youngest actor to win the Oscar for life time achievement.
She should of won for wizard of oz .
@@ManuelGuzman067 She Won a Non Competitive Juvenile Oscar for The Wizard Of Oz.
She got a Juvenile Oscar for "The Wizard of Oz."
I wish there was a tie between Rita and Judy that year.
When did winners start thanking everyone from studio execs to their agents to dog trainers for 5 minutes?? This is the best speech
ETA: She wore the same dress in 2018 Oscars, more than half a century later!!
you are right!!!
That dress was designed by Pitoy Moreno, a topnotch Filipino couturier and who passed away this year at age 93 if I'm not mistaken
That’s so cool!
These days it’s encouraged to thank everyone who you think allowed you to win the Oscar. I personally think it’s a good idea.
@@WeneedmoreGodsinTshirts And God help you if you forget someone (Julia Roberts did not thank Erin Brockovich). People will never let you live it down.
She's so fricking gorgeous
Marie And she still is based on when she wore that exact dress to last night's ceremony.
I couldn't agree with you more!!
She is a proud Puerto Rican , one of the island glory
Angel Acevedo She’s a white lady
Juneau Is My Baby Puerto Rican isn’t s race dumbass. It’s a nationality. She’s white.
Puerto Rican
Angel Acevedo orgulio boricua rita moreno
@@Imadeyoumad288 Dude, can you be anymore stupid? Puerto Rican's come in all colors, just like any other hispanics. Its only the stupidity and typical ignorance of people from "mainland) US (I say mainland US because Puerto Rico is part of the US) who think that everything in Latin America is brown.
“I’ll never forgive myself for this. I’ve been trying to make up for it since then with long acceptance speeches,” Rita Moreno jokes about her very concise response to the win. (Entertainment Weekly, 2018) 😄
She is one of the greatest actresses ever.
+Elaine Snow Loved her on that Oz show. Anybody remember that?
+TheChannel.TV no sadly I missed that. She is a goddess,
Agreed, she is truly Hollywood royalty from the golden age and has so much class.
Come now... let's not get carried away. Rita Moreno is very talented in fact extremely talented but we definitely if have seen far more talented.
She's adorable in "Singin' in the Rain". She's so gorgeous and fashionable. But if you blink you miss her. Her character's name is Zelda based on Clara Bow. I wanted more of her.
Rita and George Chakiris came to the Oscar show together that night and both took home the gold. Has that ever happened another time?
Love, love, love Rita Moreno!
Daniel McLaughlin I saw a video with Shelley Winters talking to TCM about the night she won her second Oscar, and she said that she and Martin Balsam (who won for Best Supporting Actor that night) went to the ceremony together..
+Ryan Sayre But then who didn't go somewhere with Winters? Johnny Carson once joked that she dated all three Stooges. And why the hell wasn't Balsam sitting beside her?... not that I blame him.
Daniel McLaughlin you mean both supporting actors winning for the same movie? Yes. 2010, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, THE FIGHTER. 1971, Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. Those were the post winners after George and Rita. But neither of them went together, they went to the ceremony, but not together! Besides Rita was Marlon Brandon’s girlfriend at the time!!
Guido Rojas I do remember hearing about their relationship
Here after Ariana’s win on the oscars!! So historic that she won the same category and ROLE as Rita 60 yrs later! So amazing and deserving for the both of them! whatta moment!
Did not remember this. Rita's moment is a classic Oscar moment. Short and memorable.
BTW, for Trivia buffs. This was not Rita's first time receiving an Oscar. She accepted for Irene Sharaff's costumes for THE KING AND I in 1957.
Did not remember? Did you watch this award telecast in 1962?
@@patriciataylor8458 No. But I know someone who has copies of all the ceremonies.
Thanks for the info!
"I CAN'T BE-LIEVE it!!! Good lord!! I leave you with that!!"
Rita is awesome. And was on the TODAY show speaking about WSS's golden anniversary- and looking great at 79. She rocks!!
Well Deserved!!! She was outstanding in West Side Story. Although I am black American, she made me want to be Puerto Rican with that performance lololol.
....
I am Bi Racial (Black and White) and I feel the same way Deantre! I have always felt ashamed to admit it, but you saying it makes me feel better knowing that someone else felt the same way.
Best comment ever ❤
Puerto Rican love sent your way ❤
There black Puerto ricans, you know? It is not a race...
LATIN LEGEND♥
Legend, period!
Dale, abuelita, dale! Rita is amazing, I'm laughing out loud with this speech
"I can't believe it!"
No, Rita. You should believe it 100%. You're soooooo great in West Side Story!!
You can believe it Rita, you are one of the most deserving winners ever!
Rita Moreno is the epitome of a fine wine. 60 years later and she still looks incredible!
That was classic.
being a young Puerto Rican lady I look up to this queen since I was a child
An iconic gown by a Filipino designer, Pitoy Moreno! 😍🥰
it's wonderful to see when people are genuinely thrilled
Good to see her wearing the exact same dress today at the Academy Awards!
She was saying today that she was sure someone else would win so didn’t prepare a speech. I love the way she accepted.
I love how surprised she was! She is such a beautiful woman. ❤️
And still is
West side story is the greatest musical ever and Rita was beautiful and fantastic.
And when you learn just how much she had to go through and how much hard work she did to get to this moment in her career. Makes it that much more empowering to see her win this
Oh god she's so beautiful
She is an incredible actress! She won just about every award they got!
Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, and Golden Globe. EGOT+G.
George looks so happy she won!
She wore the same dress at the Oscars 2018.👼😇💞💙💎
As a Purto Rico born American, Rita Moreno would have never anticipated her win during that time.
Eh, she's still white so it wasn't that far fetched
Richly deserved Oscar that year by Ms. Moreno. The other actresses were awesome too in their respective films but Moreno's firecracker performance as 'Anita' in West Side Story could not be beat that year! She and George Chakiris both won and I'm so happy that they did! They're very cute together when Rita's name was announced. :)
Well said, she is truly amazing.
You know what shocked me about her performance? She's not even a professional dancer. Can you believe that?
Yes very richly!
Montgomery Clift and Judy Garland in Judgment at Nuremberg we’re both far superior.
Were both far superior.
Genuinely love the joy on her face. She is so cool!!
She just won herself a Jet Ski.
LMFAO!
Her speech was iconic short and simple ❤
Happy Birthday to a true American icon. Rita Moreno turns 90 years old today!
I got a big smile on my face.... best speech ever!
Happy 90th birthday, Rita Moreno.
Chakiris and Moreno side by side: now that's an unsurvivable blast of beauty.
Best Speech. Ever. (2)
I wish all Oscar speeches were like this. Best speech ever.
For an award completely undeserved. She did not sing, Ms. Anita. Judy Garland was robbed.
@@edwadgreenspan4915 She did sing you dummy.
Outstanding speech. Straightforward and to the point. Good job Rita!
Rita Moreno just floated her way up to the award!!!
She's 91 and will be 92 on December 11, 2023. She wore that dress again, not so long ago. She's from Juncos, Puerto Rico were my father is from and she was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, where I was born. Our lives have been so different though. I'm happy she got to do all that she wanted. ❤❤❤❤ I'm so proud of her.
West Side Story was a classic. Rita Moreno and George Chakiris we’re outstanding.
Rita yes, George not so much.
@@ChrolliForever omg what do you have against George?!??!?! You commented on his Oscar winning video too! If you don't like him, why go out of your way to criticize him in his videos? BOTH Rita and George were fantastic!

The days of class and real beauty!!!
Why does it still hit so hard 60 years later?? Congrats forever, Rita.
Rita Moreno has great acting in West Side Story.
shes 94 years old today and with even more energy than before. a legend. love her
She’s short sweet and to the point
She's there with Bernardo!
One of the greatest performances ever.
Ariana Debose's performance in the 2021 film deserves the Oscar too!
See Judgment at Nuremberg.
"I'll leave you with that" what a fucking queen lmao
She's so cute
Ms. Moreno was and is so great. She is so talented. I just love her.
She is so beautiful.
Her performance as Anita was full of heart.
This video of Rita Moreno is great. Those were the good old days when actors would accept the Oscar, thank everyone and sit down. It’s so refreshing to see an acceptance speech without having to endure their opinions and political narrative on politics, race, etc., etc.
Always been a huge fan of Rita and she is so deserving, she is an amazing person.
She talked to our public high school tonight, we are doing a production of WSS in which I play Action.
She was fantastic: funny, encouraging, and wise.
Wonderful woman.
This woman had me from west side story, she is an outright legend! The 2nd woman/performer to win the EGOT(Helen Hayes (1st) also completed her 4th award the same year in 1977).
The first time I seen her was in the King & I
The 2nd women with EGOT, the 3rd person with EGOT, the first latina with EGOT and the first latina women with Oscar. She's an absolute legend!
Rita Moreno deserved to win the Oscar for West Side Story, the first screen role to capitalize on her singing, dancing and acting talents. As she relates in her excellent autobiography, for ten years, Hollywood didn't know what to do with her and Rita was cast as Indians, Asians and Mexican Spitfire characters. even after winning the Oscar, she struggled for recognition until Brando cast her in a pre-Godfather film and she got a Tony for "The Ritz". She was genuinely surprised by her win.
She did not sing in the movie, none of the principle sang.
The acceptance address was brief but to the point!! Thanks lots, Ms. Moreno, for all your great work!! :) :)
Morino and Hudson! How beautiful they are! Oscar given! Oscar received! Oscar deserved!
An iconic performance!
1:20 "She gets to keep the Oscar, but Rock must return to the studio before midnight" .. I'm sure Mr. Hudson could resist. ;)
Mr. Hudson was sure dreamy...
he was also gay! he could resist all women
Green Goddess Yeah, but he was still hot back in the day.
Sarah Stewart that's for sure! And no offence to the gay community. He sure was one heck of a man. By far one of the all time sexiest men. That's why it was so hard to picture him as gay!
Good thing it wasn't Jim Nabors he gave the award to
Rita Moreno richly deserved the Oscar for West Side Story. Judy garland, who was nominated for a wonderful supporting performance in Judgment At Nuremberg, should have rightfully won for A Star Is Born. Rita will be awarded a Kennedy Center Honor later this year.
Que Viva Rita Moreno orgullo de Puerto Rico y toda Latinoamérica 😆😆❣
Here's a fun story:
As Moreno was leaving the stage she found herself wrapped in the arms of Joan Crawford. "There there" Crawford said "I'll take care of you!" The press agent wanted to take Moreno to the the reporters, but Crawford insisted they go back to her dressing room so they could take a picture.
A few weeks later Moreno received a note from Crawford that said "Rita dear, it was so kind of you to take the time to stop my room to get your picture taken on your night of triumph."
Rita said "To take the time? She would of ripped my arm off if I had tried to get away!"
Lol! That's awesome!
She wrote about that scene in her book "A Memoir".....good one Drake !
HaHa but you left out the part about Joan crushing her & Rita describing her as built like a Linebacker
"Now I have some advice for you, Rita dear. No Wire Hangers! Ever! Or Mommie Dearest will be very displeased with you!"
@@SymphonyBrahms lmao
Greatest speech of all time
Such a legend. So talented and loveable long live ❤ Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Awesome, I believe the first Latina to win for Best supporting Actress!
As a half Mexican, I feel represented
60 years later, another actress named Ariana DeBose won the Oscar for playing the same role ✨
she will forever be my idol. her surprise to winning an oscar always brings a smile to my face
In these days, when winners thank everyone from their parents, to their director, to God, to their little dog, Scuzzy, Rita Moreno's accptance speech should remain an object lesson that briefer is sometimes better.
Fifty years later, Ms. Moreno continues to prove that she is one of the true class acts of show biz.
Thank you Thank You i've been looking for this for a long time love Rita Moreno
The greatest speech of all time
Rock Hudson, what a handsome man.
Well-deserved Oscar.
Great win
Observing and commenting on someone’s talent validates their skills and hard work. It can make a tremendous impact in someone’s life by instilling confidence and propelling them forward.
You are so right!
I'm Glad you took the time to comment...
What a gorgeous lady . Classy and timeless no one like her.
Back then, winners were happy and said their thanks and left the stage.
Rita is a true class act. Her spontaneity and authenticity remain matchless.
I liked her role and her exquisite performance very much-well deserved.
She commissioned Filipino designer, Pitoy Moreno, to create the gown she wore the evening she won the Oscar.
How lucky we are from the grace of God that this woman's elegance and beauty is still as radiant today as it was in 1962 through a recording. She is one of the few left of an era that has been ended, stories that nobody else could tell but her. We are lucky she is well and beautiful even at 90! I still can't believe it, I'm happy she is still with us.
After watching the new WSS last night, I couldn’t agree more
She’s a legend!!!🙏🏻❤️🌟✨💫
Rita was amazing in West Side Story, she can dance, sing, everything!
Just the sound of Maria , brings a tear .
She seems like such a lovely person!

Well deserved Oscar! She's amazing in West Side Story. 💖
