    I love it when Bernardo tries to convince Anita that all sucks in America, and she stops him by saying "You forget I'm in America". And he just smiles, like he's saying: "You have a point there."
    Those two were my favourite couple in the movie.

    I don't think anybody realizes just how difficult that choreography is. They're moving on the off beats in a weird time signature... THAT'S HARD!!!

    Movie theater owners were reporting that after this scene ended, entire audiences (packed houses) gave this scene a standing ovation --- something theater owners had never seen before or since when screening a movie.

      I went to a screening in Hollywood for the 50th anniversary. After this number the audience stood and applauded the cast members in attendance. The theater had stop the film. The number virtually reaches out for your hand and pleads for you to dance along. Absolutely brilliant.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

    As vibrant and perfect as any dance/music sequence every put on film. They're all brilliant, but Rita Moreno is simply phenomenal. This sequence is as fresh and electric as the day it was filmed. :)

      Warren Flinn yes but you cannot say that MOST discrimination is towards Mexicans and Muslims when most minorities as a whole receive the same amount of discrimination in this country. Mexicans are not the only latino american race that have to come into America illegally. Central Americans cross through Mexico illegally into America as well, and face those same problems. Caribbean latinos sometimes come on illegal boats, swim, and stay with expired visas.

    fun fact: when Rita Moreno won an Oscar for this movie, she thought she had no chance of winning, so she didn’t even bother preparing an award speech. I’m so glad she did tho What an icon!!!

      @@mohammedashian8094Fun fact. George first appeared in White Christmas with Rosemary Clooney. He and another guy were dancing while she sang in a nightclub towards the end of the movie, He was really good then and wonderful as Bernardo. And very handsome and what a good dancer!

    This is the best part of West Side Story. It has the best dance routine, clever lyrics. It's fun, political and still relevant. Plus I agree with both the points they're making. Anita is my favourite character, but I can't think of who her Shakespearean counterpart is....the nurse?

      I guess the closest you can get to Anita's counterpart in Romeo and Juliet is the nurse. That's not as close as Riff / Mercutio and Bernardo / Tybalt, but at times Anita does act as a mother hen to Maria.

    According to Rita Moreno the very end part where the girls are sitting on the shoulders of the dancers she said there were at least over a hundred takes they had to do just to get that one shot.. but this is simply the greatest musical ever made!!

      No argument there I saw a live performance in Chicago in 2003 performed by drama teenagers and there was NOT AN EMPTY seat to be had completely sold out- AND a play “Oklahoma “ was at the same time next door I’m afraid zero people went but they learned a lesson : DO NOT try to compete with West Side Story !!!!!!

      @@marina2387 Natalie Wood and "Tony" weren't dancers and Wood wasn't a singer, only and actress. The others were the finest in the business. Sadly Russ Tamblin's (Riff) career didn't do well after WSS. Poor casting. My fav was Anita as a character and star.

    I first saw this film in a theatre when I was nine years old. I'm 64 now and this scene still thrills me, still blows me away. WSS remains an incomparable masterpiece as a whole but the planets really lined up for this number. Wow. Just... WOW.

    They make the dancing look so effortless even though it's not and takes many years of practice to get to that point.

      What makes these dance numbers difficult are the time signatures used throughout Bernstein's music. Moreno said the music does not make dance sense. Dancers are trained to dance to beats in groups of 4 or 8. "America" 's compound meter is 6/8 3/4.

      I was 14 years old when I went to see this movie in the theater. My 14-year-old cousin went with me. To this day, I vividly remember when an extreme close-up of George Chakiris first came on the screen -- I tell you THE ENTIRE AUDIENCE GAVE A LOUD GASP!!!!! He was just INCREDIBLY GOOD-LOOKING! It was surreal! Me and my cousin were instantly smitten, LOLOL!

      Stop it ! 😂, immigrant song?, in the movie they were Puerto Rican’s, Puerto Rico became a colony of the USA in 1898! West Side Story was released in 1961! The writers should have done their homework & added “I like to live in New York City”. Not I like to live in America 🤔

    The way the women are dancing in this scene twirling and grabbing their dresses is actually derived from a very old Puerto Rican dance Bomba plena,Its roots come from the Yoruban culture in West Africa brought to Puerto Rico during the slave trade.The dance style and music swept Puerto Rico and is apart of its history.Very clever for the choreography design

      She's seems to be a fan of musicals. Which is odd as I was the one who was in them in high school.

    I kind of wished that the broadway version just stuck with this. It is more interesting in a comical way to see both sides argue about staying in America and not go back to Puerto Rico:)

      From what I hear, this version of the song was originally planned for Broadway, but it didn't go through because there wouldn't be enough time for the guys to change costumes. And that's why only the women are singing in the Broadway version.

      They did the same in one number in Damn Yankees. The lead dancer wears a dress with a very big skirt like the one in this number that she uses to stand out from the other dancers.

    Fell in love with George the first time I saw this film and still love him now. This is the best musical film of all time . I can watch it over and over and never get bored. Fantastic cast, great songs great costumes and wonderful acting.

    Rita Moreno is still hot today as she was in 1961. She is an ICON! Saw this movie with my Mom and Dad at a drive-in theater in Ceres, Ca when I was 9 years old. One of the best musicals ever.

    I love just about every frame in this movie, and "America" is definitely my favorite song, but it's Rita Moreno's "OOOMPH" at 2:34 that is the unquestioned highlight for me!

    The best musical EVER. I saw it for the first time when I was 13, and have seen the movie at least 80 times. I am now 69 and I love it, the cast, the music, the dancing

    A landmark in the history of the American musical and movie.. Between Jerome Robbins choreography, Leonard Bernstein's music, and performances by the cast all add up to brilliance. The smiling lady on the billboard is a fascinating touch.. Timeless, genius work by all.

      And then when she's assaulted by the Jets at the store while the instrumental version of "America" plays, wow. It's like what she said in the song is being thrown back in her face as she realizes the actual struggle Bernardo went through in the streets. That strikes hard.

    The whole cast. This particular song from that musical has always been my favorite. Even though the whole musical was totally entertaining. Couldn't memorize those dance steps even if I actually had talent. Insanely good work by all. Thank you.

    This was made about 60 years ago. It's 2020 and some of the same societal problems in the song exist. Over-priced real estate, prejudice, an economy built on credit. These same issues will probably be with us in 2080.

    1962; I was 9. I saw West Side at the theater and was so blown away I was so much in mourning over Riff’s death and the emotion-charged, action-packed stuff of the movie, I couldn’t concentrate in school and nearly failed 4 th grade! I still don’t regret seeing this masterpiece- and this scene was embedded in my memory! What directing and acting!

    Few musical numbers can capture the raw energy, sass, and joy of musicals.
    Performing this scene was so strenuous that dancers were passing out on set.
    But their artistry set a landmark that has yet to surpassed imo.

    My late great mother Anna who played classical piano before marrying her husband Louis my late great father cried at the end when Tony shot and killed! I was only 8 years old! Still can remember it like it was yesterday even though it was 63 or so years ago! Great memory!😮

      The sharks were more of a crew to watch each other's back than an actual steet gang, much less a organized crime syndicate. Huge difference.
