  • Metal Gear Solid Remake leaks circling around whenever a new gaming event is on the horizon is as common as it gets. But this time, it's real: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. As a former massive Metal Gear fan, I figured I'd give my two cents on the mere idea of remaking a game as massive and significant as MGS3, and what it would be like remaking a lot of Metal Gear games, while I am it.

I cannot speak for anyone else but I can relate to going from seeing MGS as the pinnacle of gaming to not liking them much anymore.
I used to be absolutely obsessed. MGS planted the seed for my obsession, and I loved MGS2 so much that I considered it my favorite game of all time. I also loved MGS3. For years, pretty much all of my conversations with friends included MGS quotes and voiceover imitations. When MGS4 came out I was in a really rough place in my life, a week away from being homeless, and I didn't have a PS3. I preordered and bought MGS4 anyway and rented an HDTV, playing through that game twice in the very stressful last week of having a place to live. I say all that just to illustrate, to some extent at least, my prior obsession with the series.
Something happened though. It's hard to explain, but fastforward by the time Ground Zeroes came out, I just couldn't be bothered to care much. I played the demo. I haven't played Phantom Pain at all, nor have I felt compelled to. I was content watching the cutscenes on UA-cam, but they pretty much verified to me that my love for MGS wasn't really a thing anymore.
I don't have any interest in replaying the old ones either, not now anyway, even MGS2. Maybe at some point I will. Part of that is simply probably because I overplayed them in the past. I can't imagine ever sitting through all the cutscenes and codec conversations in any of those games again, though skipping cutscenes used to be absolutely blasphemous to me. Those games are full of brilliant ideas, but those ideas are so ingrained in me now that I am numb. I think I always had some awareness that they were kind of poorly-paced games with bloated narrative, but what worked about it made the pros far outweigh the cons.
Last time I tried to play MGS4 really showed me how much my perception I changed. It was a chore for me to get through. I didn't even find the writing to be that good, though I ate it up like a cat going wild on treats the first time around. I would go so far as to call MGS4 a bad game now, which makes me sad, because you already know what it meant to me back when it came out.
I don't know. I think we all grow differently. Sometimes we grow in different directions from what we used to love. Sometimes life changes our priorities. Sometimes we burn ourselves out irrevocably.
To me, this MGS3 remake looks bad. It isn't even that I ride Kojima's "d" anymore; I used to worship the chair he farted in, but those days are long behind. But everything from the cinematography in the trailer to Snake's character design just seems really generic to me. This isn't gonna be what gets me back into MGS, that's for sure.

If there's one game that Konami should be 'remaking,' it's the original Metal Gear game from the early 90's. They formed the core of the series' story going forward, especially with the shadow of Big Boss hanging over his cloned sons in MGS 1 and 2. Those games being as old as they are have no real expectations attached to them and would allow them a tremendous amount of development freedom while marketing them as entirely new games.

If the original MSX Metal Gear won’t be getting a remake anytime soon, there’s the next best thing:
“Intrude N313, Target Designate: TX-55” by MaskedSongbird is a fanfic novelization of the original game that serves as the origin story for Solid Snake.
So far, the story is intriguing as it felt more in line with the Solid games’ expositions of military science and the political spectrum at the time of the game’s events were set in.
It expands on Snake’s younger days as a recruit and shows how a little different he was compared to the Solid games. I’m curious as to how he develops into the icon he would become.
The story is currently ongoing with updates taking awhile to wait for. So, it covers the events that led to the original game such as Snake’s early days in Foxhound and then finally the mission itself. This may test you patience if you’re not into that but I believe it will be worth it. Not to mention there some continuity nods to the prequel games that doesn’t feel tacked on and is instead organic.
The link to this novelization can be found in AO3:

@@marcoa6319 I fully believe that they will at some point remake them. MGS3 remake is just their testing ground because it's simpler to remake, has a much bigger following when it comes to how people view that story as Kojima's best work along with just how much the game throws at you that you can use in a myriad of ways. The only scary thing about a 1:1 remake and not modernizing some of the gameplay is unlike other 1:1 remakes of classic platformers is the gameplay is controls are simple. MGS3's controls are really hard to figure out. Not I was expecting them to give us MGS5 combat then like J says you will run into the twin snakes problem even though I think many would love a MGS3 remake that got the resident evil treatment. We know that is not what they are doing.
By having MGS3 as this blueprint, having all the things that the original had but just a couple of improvements to play more like a modern game. They will not frustrate new comers and they will have a choice to make. They can do this with MGS 1-4 and peacemaker first. Or they could decide that before getting to MGS1, having MGS3 under their belt maybe they will want to fill in the gap, and have people play Solid Snakes story chronologically. Though that will only happen if they feel they are up to the task of just having a rough outline, needing to fill in the gaps of the story to flesh out and add more to it. Instead of a following a direct blueprint for each game.
We have no idea what kind of talent is at Konami these days so it's hard to say. Konami would likely love if they were able to remake those original metal gear games doing a good job of it. Proving they can still do it without Kojima making people forget about survive which was the most obvious cash grab I've ever seen. They let Kojima spend so much money and time on the fox engine and MGS5 making them desperate to just get another game to get something out of it. It's actually a bit suprising that they are going for a 1:1 using unreal 5. You'd think they would be using the fox engine some more and remake the games more in line with Capcom. Having seen their success of bringing those games to a modern audience. Considering if they really don't touch up the gameplay at all, a lot of people will likely fall off in frustration over the controls and the amount of time you spend i the codec and menu.

I don't think FF7 or MGS 3 need faithful remakes. They're existing awesome games, redoing them would not really add anything.
Faithful 1-to-1 remakes should be for games that had potential, but ended up way worse than they could've been because of minor issues. Those need the faithful, "do the same thing except properly this time".
I'd be massively disappointed if mgs 3 got faithful remake. It'd just be the same game. Absolutely no reason for that project to exist. There are no obvious failures that if you fix, you improve MGS3 massively.

I completely agree that i wanted to see the original metal gear be remade instead of mgs3. It was my thought for years to remake those games instead of the mgs ones because they are much older, but also because it would expand on solid snakes story considering the previous mgs games were about big boss. So remaking mg1 and mg2 would be awesome for solid snakes story. Especially because the last time we got to play solid snake in his prime was mgs2...and that was only the tanker portion. For mgs2 fans wanted to play solid snake and were disappointed with raiden being the mc of the game. Then when fans did get to play as solid snake again it was as old snake where hed gone past his prime. This is why I always wanted the orignal metal gears be remade. So we can play more as solid snake before he got old.

    • @Bacbi
      @Bacbi 7 місяців тому

My guess is they will want to get to do so eventually but MGS3 is the safest game to make first both because you have a blueprint for whoever this new team is to follow. And because it's largely considered the best story in the series and that it's the earliest in the timeline. It's an easy way to test the appetite. Let's just hope no matter if their aim is to do what Capcom has done with their remakes, which is personally what I wish for. Even though I know it's probably going to be more in line with crash/spyro/last of us part 1. That unlike a Square Enix, Konami will have a realistic budget and sales expectations. If they go in expecting 20 million copies sold, we won't be getting more. I could see their reasoning also being because Snake Eater has a lot of different types of environments the team will have experience in creating things from scratch which Metal gear 1 and 2 remakes would require. So the question really will be are they going to want to remake them chronologically, and actually do metal gear 1 and 2 before remaking Solid. Or will they want the team to have remakes of 3, 1 and 2, maybe even 4, before having to build two games with almost zero guard rails.
Since we have no idea who is making the game it's hard to say what would be best for their level of experience.

MGS1 is going to be a very interesting case to say the least in the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection. Like will it be using the PC port of the game or how would Psycho Mantis's fight work when the XBOX Series S/X and even the PS4/PS5 has no physical controller ports. Like for a deathless run of the game the busts on either side of the room are indestructable until you are left with no choice but to die here and then Colonel Cambell will tell you to destroy the busts to kill him. So a deathless run will be problematic and even if we skip Psycho Mantis's fight by using the vent glitch to trigger the torture room event early, by the time we grab the Stinger and head on up to fight the Hind D then we are effectively softlocked since the Stinger is ID Locked and Snake has level checks in place and since we never fought Sniper Wolf the first time around the game then breaks since we are missing a vital but most important level up in the game and there is no way of fixing that save file. Also they better leave BOBA Skip alone since her discovery was monumental and I can honestly say it's going to be extremely exciting to play MGS1 again hopefully with Achievements/Trophies.

I'd love old Metal Gear games being remade, the ending of MGS 4 is one of my favourite and most emotional moments in Metal Gear saga and to be able to experience the story of young Solid Snake and his mentour could be the single greatest thing they could do, but...
But I do believe that in order to pull this out you *need* someone, who could do this incredibly. Not good, we fans could probably imagine how to do this good, but incredibly. I'm inclined to believe that the Snake Eater remake could be amazing without the old staff, but I doubt anyone could do this good enough without them. Metal Gear games have always been for me not only incredible games, but truly innovative and groundbreaking ones. When was the last time that Konami released a genuinely great big budget game?

I have my doubts about the remake. The first thing that bothers me is that they might have to change several things. But they are not connecting with the original creators, artists, designers. That is concerning because the original looks and sounds perfect. It is an anime, B-movie, spy-thriller-action-james bond level story. Of course, the controls and gameplay are outdated. But making it new or updated, is going to be very difficult. I think, the best way to bring the game to a modern audience is to tweak the controls. That's it. Literally, just improve the controls. Remove pressure sensitive controls. Use the 3Ds version with some tweaks from peace walker controls. Do not change the mechanics at all. Also improve movement and animations so it's not jank as hell to move. Then, update the graphics in the same way the shadow of the colossus does it. But keep the original art style more in mind. Shadow of the colossus really blows it in some ways by changing the look of the characters. Flesh out environments. Make them slightly bigger. Add in better jungle environments. Improve the look of the natural environments. Keep the characters looking like the original. Do not change any physical features.
Also, add in some subsistence features. Make a level selector. Add VR missions. Add a boss gantlet mode. Add a mission maker with customizable VR missions or a general Map maker where we can make custom missions for ourselves or other players with very basic options. Choose from a handful of premade maps. Edit enemy layouts. Modes would be peace walker style mission objectives. That's literally all u need to do. Hands down best mgs game ever.

I can make a very, very safe assumption that the discourse surrounding the MGS3 Remake when it comes out is going to be hellish just by looking at the comments of this video. Pretty much split down the middle in wanting either a completely faithful remake with nothing about it changed minus improved graphics and performance or it being like the REmakes with it using the original as a base to make a new game from.

Honestly I think this one might be pretty good and we're also getting a 3 remaster so hey it's a win-win

I see you renamed your old Metal Gear reviews. I guess you think they have not aged well?
In any case remaking the MG1 and 2 with the retcons is a cool idea

never downplay thoughts as "maybe i could be wrong"
RE4R wasn't something that could hold to the original and won't hold when MICROTRANSACTIONS exist in it
at the end of the day its not a chance to be great, maybe good if they keep 1 to 1 but trying to go beyond it will lead to new issues they can't solve without kojima

I'm very concern on these two remakes of both Silent Hill 2 and MGS3. I've seen it's gameplay presentation, and it looks decent, but will it stay faithfully of the PS2 original here. Konami are just cash grabbing these franchises here, cause Nostalgia creates tons of profits. My biggest concern is Silent Hill 2. I'm afraid they'll ruin it just like they did before in previous Silent Hill games.

Let's be completely fair here with the dialogue of MGS3 specifically, it is there to set up the world and time period, it's worldbuilding really. "Getting talked at for 20 minutes" is kind of a disingenuous statement when not considering why there even there. Now if we were talking a lot of the later games in the franchise, you'd maybe have a point but with 3 specifically, it's not an issue.

When was the last time you played? Cause you’re right but 50% of the games mandatory dialogue is redundant

they already said they are not changing the story, to the point they are REusing the original voice lines. meaning they are not trying to ruin the game to apease modern audiences , the best outcome
just MGS3D with good graphics and not running at 20fps.

I would hope they would change Delta up, especially since the original is on modern consoles. Remake should change things, they should be unique. If players hate even small changes then they should just play the original. The RE4 remake is the perfect example of changing things while maintaining the same feeling.
Also people who are caught up on Kojima not being there are such crybabies. Dude hasn't wanted to make a Metal Gear game since the 80s. He made MG2 out of spite, and then MGS1 and MGS2 just to wrap up the story and get his ideas and themes out there. Then he had to make 3 to explain more because the fans wanted explanations, then he had to direct 4 because fans wanted MORE explanations and were sending death threats. Hilarious he gave them the middle finger and just said "Nanomachines, the Patriots" half the time.
Kojima has been wanting to pass off the series for awhile, a lot of the old MGS dev team are still at Konami. They can make amazing games without Kojima, PO, Ghost Babel, AC!D 1&2, hell even MGRR developed by an entirely different studio was great. I personally feel Kojima has done all he can with the series and I would prefer a new start.
I'd honestly prefer a reboot over remakes. I also personally feel that even if Kojima had another MGS story he wanted to tell, he fell off kinda hard towards the end. 4 and PW just are not my games.

If MGS1 got a remake... that would be the 2nd time since twin snakes exist on gamecube. In all honesty still surprised it never got a re release but hey the same thing can be said about persona 3 fes when Atlus did the remaster and use another version of the same game p3p over p3 fes. Komani doing the same thing might not be so surprising now that I think about it.

It’s said the Vita version of MGS 2 & 3 are the best ones you can get.. Thankfully those are the ones I own.. Although my old neighbor hooked me up with MGS 3 vanilla before he moved I never did check it out or at least not yet

MGS1 remake would be a port of the twin snakes from the cube like RE1 remke would since those are the official remakes

If you watch the trailer and notice all the subtle references to MGS3 you'll see there is a tremendous attention to detail, that shows me whoever is working on this actually has a love and appreciation for the series or at least this particular game. It doesn't need Kojima. MGS4 had Kojima and it was easily the worst entry in the series, and it never got much better after that. Portable Ops was better than Peace Walker, and MGSV well we know what happened with that.
