05:01 Charles just wrote me an email to note that the lining is described as wool, alpaca, and cotton - but through an error in translation. The 'Lost Worlds' version of an N-1 deck jacket is made of heavy duty, black, horsehide leather. It features an authentic, 'fireman's hook' closure system for the storm flap covering the zipper, a full (body & sleeves) felted wool lining, and a knitted wool collar and storm cuffs. Roomy, wind-proof, warm and water resistant, its durable horsehide exterior makes it tough as nails and probably the most unique version out there of the iconic N-1. Apart from the use of horsehide for the outer shell, it's a highly accurate copy of a circa 1943 N-1 in all other respects. One of my favourite coats that gives real meaning to the N-1's other name: "foul weather jacket".

I bought the deck jacket from Pike Brothers this past fall, mainly because I loved the look and it happens to be my last name. I absolutely love it! The only slight negative is that the wool collar is a tad scratchy, but I'm almost always wearing a collared shirt so it doesn't bother me. Highly recommend for half the cost of the others!

I recently got the Universal Works jacket on sale for 175. I was skeptical til I received it. Really well made. No loose stitches, etc. Very warm. It uses polyester fleece and polyester wadding inside for extra warmth. I have other N-1 jackets from well known companies and as far as fit and craftsmanship on par with them. You just aren't getting alpaca or wool for the insulation. For the sale price this is actually really nice. Pictures don't do it justice.

Just got the Iron Heart N1 delivered in XXXL and loving it. I started with a XXL and it was just too tight around the waist and a little snug in the shoulders. The 3XL is perfect. Just for comparison, I'm 6'4" with a 46" chest measurement. The length is spot on as well, which is rare for someone of my height. Unfortunately, it just warmed up here, so no opportunity to wear it. Should cool down soon though.
Impeccable timing! I just sold my Iron Heart N1 to pull the trigger on a Dehen N1 yesterday. The IH was great but the fit wasn't perfect on me. I'm hoping the Dehen is as luxurious as it seems. You're right though, there really isn't much content out there on N1 jackets.
Awesome pick! I wish it was jungle cloth/bedford cord instead of waxed canvas which I'm kinda tired of, but if the Large is 29" tall I'd probably get one because the length is my biggest stumbling block!
@@Stridewise I agree. It would be nice if Dehen maybe offered the jacket in either fabric. Bedford and waxed canvas both have their advantages. Waxed canvas definitely isn't as interesting or unique in the heritage clothing world but it's reasonably practical for the application and the full mouton lining seems like it will be amazing for Michigan winters.
@@Stridewise dehen 1920 made the n1 in an olive cotton sateen outer shell recently for some retailers. I think Withered Fig has it for sale and some others
Jake’s review is obnoxious. South Californian (and obviously winter jacket expert) reviews gaudy jack that isn’t an N1, and declares the N1 overrated because he sees it ‘everywhere’. Ok.
Biased opinion here, but I love my Freenote Mariner. Because I bought it online, I trust Freenotes sizing over IH's. IH's sizing is a bit all over the place for me in general. Also picked the Mariner up last spring on sale, sold on both the price and the full alpaca lining. The idea of buttons on the IH didn't really appeal to me as it seemed redundant and alot of work to zip and button. Simplicity of design is more to my liking as well. That said, you cant go wrong with any of the 4 you featured..
Great video like the style of jacket . Might look into getting one . I bought huckberry trucker jacket last year and it’s awesome . I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 keep up the good reviews
Good selection covered. I actually finally pulled the trigger on an N1 Deck Jacket. But went with Tellason's N1 Deck jacket collaboration with Todd Blubaugh the 14oz selvedge denim version. I figured if it rains most likely I'm wearing another jacket with a hood. But riveted buttons did impact the decision. The selvedge denim looking better as it ages. Not a biker but arm length does also usually factor in the decision.
@@Stridewise The RJ2 is an awesome looking coat. I saw when Carl Murawski and the Iron Snail posted reviews. Curious if anyone does one about the updated fit. I also like things slightly different than the standard. One reason I had to get the JT Jacket from Ship John.
@@Stridewise Freenote doesn't go into detail. But I saw an older M version on eBay and the measurements increased for the updated fit increased very little for the body length, cross shoulder and sleeve measurements. While the chest measurements were the same. Probably feedback received to make it more functional for bikers influenced the updated fit.
Old 2008 era American eagle makes my favorite deck jackets. All made in india or Pakistan, unwaxed canvas outer, polyester/faux fur liner but man, did they wear well with their meant to be tattered and beaten aesthetic.
Cool video! I got a variant from Roark x Danner collab with some chunky waxed canvas. The liner is 100% poly tho so that sucks but it’s still very warm. I have a couple jackets from Amundsen called the Harvester jacket/overshirt that have a similar thing to the deck jacket going. These are made of thick wale cord w/ 100% wool fleece lining. I think you should sell the first Iron Heart and flip that cash into getting the xl. American Trench has a similar one to Dehen made with Cockpit USA that looks pretty cool.
@@caseyzaft6734 I'm wearing L in the video, I just bought a used XL though and it's great instagram.com/p/Cp0tmwmukGI/ when I tried a new XL it was too big and sleeves too long, but this worn one has flattened and bunched with wear. Hi, Nick! Greetings from Ireland. Thanks for mentioning Pike Brothers as I had (somehow) never heard of them before. Are there any other EU-based retailers you would recommend, please? Perhaps a short video for your European subscribers...? 🙂
@@Stridewise yeah I agree with you on the the lining. I also could tell from the sizing that they run small, so you would need to size up for layering.
I think you did a good job addressing “stolen valor.” It’s a very tricky issue. Even among people who’ve served, there are a variety of opinions. Anyway, nice work.
I'm realizing that as much as I love all the variations, my priority should be getting one that fits my long torso and I've learned Dehen's is exceptionally long... I may get one despite the outer not being jungle cloth, which I love. Oh but I love the jungle cloth... damn it
I want to go with the Dehen and I typically wear Medium in my jackets except for my Rogue Territory Supply jacket. I am 5'11 and around 180 pounds with an athletic build. I plan to wear this with sweaters and flannels. Do you recommend the Medium or Large?
Personally I love that Iron Heart version. I think all the right upgrades and improvements were made and I like the slimmer, more modern fit. Feels less "LARPy" than a more vintage repro
Recently obsessed with this style. I ended up with a wabash version from UES. Synthetic lining but half or less the price of all these mentioned. If anything, perhaps I'll look to "upgrade" to a Dehen in the coming years but this thing is so warm it only comes out on truly cold cold days.
I have the UES in khaki and love it. Super warm and inexpensive but with good quality construction. I agree though the Dehen looks like a nice upgrade in the non-traditional N1. Buzz Rickson’s repro is really a great faithful repro, that I like too.
I tried the Pike Bros N1 deck jacket and I didn't like it. I think I would definitely have gone medium or maybe even small but they only had large. It was too short and too wide. Didn't really suit me. Are they all like that? The wool was coase too. The buzz rickson one looks like the same kind of short boxy fit from the website photos. Yours seems to fit you well though. What is Demotex?
Lmao! I always wondered what kind of jacket I had. I have what is I guess a workman's knockoff. It's made by a brand called "a-range outdoors" it's from the 70s and it's made of a heavy duck canvas shell with a heavy wool blanket liner and a sheepskin semi-shawl collar. It's held up brilliantly moving firewood from the pile to the stump then indoors.
Just got back from Minneapolis with my iron heart n1. Walked around all day/evening in sub zero to single digits (F) with just t shirt under. Toasty the whole time. Even took my beanie off the second day and just popped the collar to keep my ears warm. And I’m from Hawaii.
Yes the short length is my main gripe and reason for preferring the B2 from Iron heart. I've heard of the Real McCoys N1 SPL which is an extra long version that I'm desperately trying to find in blue
Gator Aid, I have a barbour and an arcteryx body warmer and I doubt they are warmer than an N1. Granted, longer and arguably more water resistant. But, barbours sleeves are cold and sweaty.
Me too! It's just a couple inches too short on me but otherwise I'd keep it. Though honestly watching this video I'm like 'it's not that bad why did i sell it'

Yayyy so glad you liked it. Some videos I do because of the subject's search volume and some, like this, are because I want to tell people about something cool! I'm 6' and 190lb and the L was true size, so 2XL seems about right for you? Though I'm not great at guessing at those ranges
Sell ‘em all and get a Buzz in the right size! I wear mine down to -30s at work (I drive for a living and am in and out of the vehicle all the time). However, I’ll only wear it walking TO work down to -15 or so, after that it’s the puffy down thing for me. *the temps are in celsius, without that goofy ‘feels like’ windchill nonsense
when I was 16-22 I was broke AF and on a motorcycle for transportation. the only clothes I could afford were from the army surplus place in town. I stole all that valor. I wore a peacoat, air force pants, army gloves and boots, I think my balaclava was special forces. I didn't give a shit bc I was warm. I was only asked about it once and I said "I'm broke, what do you want" and that ended the conversation.

We live in the mountains where it gets quite cold (-1 deg F last night). What I have found is the best Winter jacket is the 32 Degrees Heat fleece jacket. They might be available elsewhere, but I get them at Costco for around $18 between August thru October. As far as fleece jackets go it is better than average. I have lots of really nice jackets but most of the time I wear those cheap fleece jackets because they are very warm and you can throw it around and not care if you abuse or lose it.
Any guys in the US Midwest that can attest to the warmth of these jackets? I’m talking Chicago, Minneapolis where it can get really cold 🥶 (single digits F). 🤔 I do like the jackets. Thanks!

@@journeymanedc Yeah but there are a milllion waxed canvas jackets out there, half the reason I like deck jackets is the jungle cloth!
@@victor8794 Indeed! I slept on the one at WF. It looks soo good!
I love that Jake uploaded a video today saying that deck jackets aren’t the best winter jackets 😂
dude I know that was so funny, we're texting about it hahah
THAT SUNOVA
@Stridewise saw that too! I think you both should sit down for a joint video and battle it out! Friendly of cpurse!!!!
Jake’s review is obnoxious. South Californian (and obviously winter jacket expert) reviews gaudy jack that isn’t an N1, and declares the N1 overrated because he sees it ‘everywhere’. Ok.
Do you have a link to Jake's video?
Have you ever had the SM Wholesale N1 deck jacket?
I bought one and thinks its quite nice for the price and made in the USA
Opinion on the Cockpit USA version?
Wow, yet another reason to add one more jacket 😊 Happy New Year!
Good to see a great video on the N1 jacket.
It would also be great to see a review on the MA1 bomber jacket. Especially the Alpha industries..
The new N1 from IH, the waxed version. Best of both worlds (and still a couple hundred dollars cheaper than Dehen)
Great review; thanks. IYO what is the better value-iron heart or Dehen?
Hello! Any Deck jackets have a hood addition? That seems like a necessary feature for the really cold winters.
Buttons look better and not generic like so many other closings
Awesome pick! Didn't know about that but I love coats made with denim that aren't Type 1/2/3 jackets. See also Freenote's RJ2 which I'm obsessed with
@@Stridewise The RJ2 is an awesome looking coat. I saw when Carl Murawski and the Iron Snail posted reviews. Curious if anyone does one about the updated fit. I also like things slightly different than the standard. One reason I had to get the JT Jacket from Ship John.
@@SummerlinW How has the fit changed?
@@Stridewise Freenote doesn't go into detail. But I saw an older M version on eBay and the measurements increased for the updated fit increased very little for the body length, cross shoulder and sleeve measurements. While the chest measurements were the same. Probably feedback received to make it more functional for bikers influenced the updated fit.
Any comments or review on the n1 inspired "Nautilus" jacket from Iron and Resin?
I first got introduced to the concept of the deck jacket from a brand called floyd and co. It’s not the same materials but still seems nice
cool! yeah that's a pretty different jacket but i definitely see the similar DNA
Very nice review Nick!
Great video! Love my Iron Heart N1 Deck Jacket, I just wish I would of sized up!
I tried mine a size up and it was just too bulky for such a short jacket. Very sad I don't have the body for Iron Heart's N1s they're soooo good
what size iron heart N1 did you get?
@@caseyzaft6734 I'm wearing L in the video, I just bought a used XL though and it's great instagram.com/p/Cp0tmwmukGI/ when I tried a new XL it was too big and sleeves too long, but this worn one has flattened and bunched with wear. Very happy! Just sold the brown one because I decided it was too short and too itchy
Best place to buy one pls ? Online or otherwise. Thank you great channel.
I really recommend the N-1 FROM Bronson Mfg. They're making them in china but for very good quality and its only 190 bucks
Solid brand, pretty much everything they have is great value and good quality.
I love your brown iron heart jacket because it goes awesome with a red plaid shirt and lighter colored jeans awesome review
Yeah it's a cool color! I kinda wish it was just a little more golden and less green but I still love this jacket
I'd love to see a video on the lined leather gloves seen in this video. Which brands are they?
Here! ua-cam.com/video/4XLaNpBW7ds/v-deo.html
Nice discover jackets .......I am in NYC in marsh where can i find a good workwear store and where to buy thorogood boots and 6 inches insulated timberland without going in WIP carhartt store !!!! I want to buy where blue collars go not in fancy overpriced store in 5 th Avenue per say
Thanks mate
I appreciate your work and you made me discover lots of brands and things like Karl murasky even if you go overboard in time of price sometimes 😂
But I get that quality is not cheap 😢
In NYC, you can try Burlington or the Army/Navy stores. There is one on 8th Ave in the 40s and another up in the Bronx on Jerome and Fordham Rd.
@@strengthandbulkMadness a huge thanks !!
Hi, Nick! Greetings from Ireland.
Thanks for mentioning Pike Brothers as I had (somehow) never heard of them before.
Are there any other EU-based retailers you would recommend, please? Perhaps a short video for your European subscribers...? 🙂
My fav is the Iron and Resin Nautilus Jacket. It’s made of Bedford Cord.
That's an excellent contender. The lining is polyester and looks cheap but the price is definitely right
@@Stridewise yeah I agree with you on the the lining. I also could tell from the sizing that they run small, so you would need to size up for layering.
Amazing video! Very informative
Damn it Nick now I'm obsessing over these jackets
I think you did a good job addressing “stolen valor.” It’s a very tricky issue. Even among people who’ve served, there are a variety of opinions. Anyway, nice work.
Also don’t forget Cockpit USA, they make a nice looking one. I’m in on the Buzz tho 😎
I have the dehen 1920 n1, the mouton fur feels softer than cashmere
I'm realizing that as much as I love all the variations, my priority should be getting one that fits my long torso and I've learned Dehen's is exceptionally long... I may get one despite the outer not being jungle cloth, which I love. Oh but I love the jungle cloth... damn it
@Stridewise dehen 1920 just came out with an olive Japanese cotton sateen variant, which I believe is essentially jungle cloth?
Please review the Ironheart M 65!
I want to go with the Dehen and I typically wear Medium in my jackets except for my Rogue Territory Supply jacket. I am 5'11 and around 180 pounds with an athletic build. I plan to wear this with sweaters and flannels. Do you recommend the Medium or Large?
probably large if you want it chonky
Personally I love that Iron Heart version. I think all the right upgrades and improvements were made and I like the slimmer, more modern fit. Feels less "LARPy" than a more vintage repro
For sure, I just wish it were a couple inches longer and I'd be sold! Damn my long torso
@@Stridewise Still better than wide feet :/
@janoschfoerster2921 facts, all I want is to wear converse without my feet looking like sausages
Recently obsessed with this style. I ended up with a wabash version from UES. Synthetic lining but half or less the price of all these mentioned. If anything, perhaps I'll look to "upgrade" to a Dehen in the coming years but this thing is so warm it only comes out on truly cold cold days.
What a fascinating version!! A pinstripe deck jacket, I’m obsessed. Thanks for the tip Daniel!
@@Stridewise With fading potential....
I have the UES in khaki and love it. Super warm and inexpensive but with good quality construction. I agree though the Dehen looks like a nice upgrade in the non-traditional N1. Buzz Rickson’s repro is really a great faithful repro, that I like too.
Love it mate! Keep up the good work
Thanks dude! This will probably become my most worked on least viewed video ever hehe
I can tell man,I’m sure you will have plenty of interest. Unique jacket and a nice alternative, I think people will appreciate it.
What's a good place to buy jungle cloth fabric?
I have the n1 by iron Heart but it’s not enough for snow so I would definitely buy a parka instead.
Is it really not warm enough! I'm sweating in mine and I'm a cold sensitive Australian. Do you think the unlined sleeves makes a difference?
Just got back from Minneapolis with my iron heart n1. Walked around all day/evening in sub zero to single digits (F) with just t shirt under. Toasty the whole time. Even took my beanie off the second day and just popped the collar to keep my ears warm. And I’m from Hawaii.
Love Dehen a great alternative they have is the flight jacket for much less
I prefer a Barbour + arcteryx vest. The longer length keeps me warmer
This was really helpful, convinced me to size up when ordering from The Real McCoy’s.
Bought the original olive version at a military surplus store in Manhattan in the late Sixties for $12.00...
Beautiful work
I love the iron heart one!
Me too! It's just a couple inches too short on me but otherwise I'd keep it. Though honestly watching this video I'm like 'it's not that bad why did i sell it'
For me I think downsizing a fjallraven jacket number 68 is the best . It’s over the top but I freaking love jacket 68 and it by far has the coolest name
hey that's not cotton! but seems legit. i always know a hood is more practical but i just prefer without
@@Stridewise if your looking for the best deck ive seen check out corlection atm those guys are just on fire. deck jackets from freewheelers and they have the god tier endgame momotaros that were made on the manual loom with silver buttons!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I own the Iron Heart and Dehen deck jackets. Dehen hands down.
That iron hart looms great on you though i know it is nit how deck jacket should fit but looks cool from modern view
The B2 you mean? It's the best fit, I'm so mad Iron Heart discontinued it
Oh you meant the N1. It does look great you're right if it were a couple inches longer I'd be fine with the slimmer fit
A couple years back I found an original WWII N1 deck jacket. I’m a vintage reseller and I bought it intending to resell it, but then I wore it a couple times, because why not? Anyway, two years later, and this thing will live with me until I die. It’s SO warm and comfortable. It’s frequently the only jacket I take with me when I travel in winter
I like never realized an 'all natural' cotton shell jacket like this could brave such cold temperatures
@@Stridewise I have a couple mackinaw cruisers (I used to work for Filson), and like you said, the deck jacket’s way warmer. It kind of makes them feel like shirt jackets
@@dylanhall6355 I know my Mackinaw suddenly feels so flimsy!

That's why I love your channel, I was not even familiar with these jackets before. I'm definitely getting the whipcord n1. What is your height and weight? I'm 235 and 6'0 feet. I'm considering 2xl. Any suggestions? thanks in advance
Yayyy so glad you liked it. Some videos I do because of the subject's search volume and some, like this, are because I want to tell people about something cool! I'm 6' and 190lb and the L was true size, so 2XL seems about right for you? Though I'm not great at guessing at those ranges
@Stridewise thanks for the reply, you are the man 💪🏾
Sell ‘em all and get a Buzz in the right size!
Are they the Thursday Cacao Titans I saw you wearing. Do they still squeak?
No! I'm trying to wear them all winter so I can do a patina video and they pair so well with the tan Iron heart jacket
@@Stridewise Cool. I'm tempted by the pike brothers deck jacket. I wonder how warm it is - there aren't any reviews around.
Have you looked at triple aught designs deck jacket?
I have and am turned off by the polyester dominant lining, but the price is right!
That B2 is sweet!
I'm gutted they took it off the market I want a black one so bad
What happened to the Real McCoy N-1?
he sold it

Yeah nothing wrong with an unlined one if you want one - except they're charging about as much as the lined ones!

Thanks!
