It's not that it's not about THE watches, it's that it's all about John Mayer & Ed Sheeran's watches... I myself just couldn't care less. They aren't coherent curated collections. If money meant nothing, I could blindly buy every watch I ever kind of liked... At some point it ceases to be a collection and becomes a luxury boutique where nothing is for sale
I stopped reading and watching Hodinkee when I realized Im not interested in how urban millennials perceive watches as fashion accessories.
I glossed over that article and went straight to the comment section. Their readership seems to be in full revolt.
If Hodinkee isn’t careful, they will go the way of Hoonigan. Hell, like the old Hoon, most of the old staff has jumped ship. It’s like they knew it was a sinking ship. Like Hoonigan, it’s all corporate now. Sell sell sell. With zero soul attached anymore.

Hodinkee started with about the stupidest name I've ever heard for anything and got worse from there.
Before I heard it spoken, I thought it was maybe pronounced something like Odin-key. Then I learned it was Ho-dinky. Just… why?
It is valid criticism but you are spending way to much time on them. People will vote on dinkee with clicks and wallets... Love the vids you made on watches themselves.... Boldrs and Veros of the watch world
Hodinkee's problem, IMO, is that they're treading on turf better-served by the likes of *GQ* and *Esquire* , and those publications have glommed onto this fact rather adeptly (I subscribe to GQ''s *Box & Papers* e-mailings, which are rather good most of the time). H has people whose YT output I like, but most of their stuff of late misses the mark - likely the consequence of getting too big too fast, and ending up in the hands of those expecting too much (I forget…LVMH?). I don't actively root for their failure, but they have to up their game for their purported target audience.

I still like Mendacino, if I recall his name correctly, and in 2022 or 2023, I forget which, they did do a four part video series on American Manufacturing that was a return to their old informative form.
But yes, as a fashion rag they are crap, and as a watch rag, they are now quickly becoming irrelevant. Malaika's series on the Paris fashion week was so cringy, I was too embarrassed to even leave a comment. Sad, really.

I think Hodinkee jumped the shark when people began to realize that everything the sell is way more expensive than market. It showed that it was about maximizing revenue and not so much advancing the culture.

When I was 8 years old I got 28mm watch and it looked pretty big on my wrist.
Today with my 8" wrist I like 39mm but 40-41 is my favorite but even 44mm diver looks okay, I think.

Hodinkee has officially fallen. I was in New York over the holidays, and ran into their store in East Village. What a total dump! I couldn’t believe this is the marquee store in New York City, that supposedly represents the epitome of online luxury watch business. Really, what the heck? Hodinkee has fallen! Hodinkee used to be a respected watch content magazine. Then it “deworsified” and bought Crown & Caliber during the pandemic. Instead of cutting office overhead, it kept the office space and cut its sales force. Service went down, complaints got worse, and pricing was not competitive. Even the content of the magazine got worse. Most loyal subscribers are going elsewhere.
I informed Hodinkee that their measurements on a watch were incorrect, and referenced the correct measurements on the manufacturer's own website. They said "thanks, we will fix it", and then they never updated it. Which means Hodinkee is lying to customers. Who would want to do business with an organization like that?

Isn't casio doing the same with the 5600 ref? Just slap some different colorways and call it a new watch? How many 5600 are there? Loads. They all look the same with different color themes. What's wrong in that?
The one thing that's wrong is paying for the hoodinkee one at 185$ vs 89$ for the OG DW-5600 which these were based on. You're paying double for the same watch.
Granted, these watches should be almost the perfect size for my 6.25“ wrist…
But this goes to the heart of making journalism pay. If you don't buy the magazine or subscribe in larger enough numbers (for any publication or broadcaster) they have to rely on ads -- which immediately compromises their position. If you want quality objective, impartial journalism you have to put your hand in your pocket and stump up the cash. Simple as.

Hodinkee has professional people working for them. That's why their interviews, reviews, and special reports are always fine (sometimes great.) The opposite are the channels created by influencers, which are, in general, mediocre (their titles, their thumbnails, their content, cross the line of bad taste because they look for people's attention.) I visit many channels because that's unavoidable when you look for specific watches and want to see them in video, but that has a high price sometimes. The worst watch channels im youtube are, no doubt, this one and Federico Talk Watches. I wonder if these guys are brothers.

I subscribe to Hodinkee and while I have some complaints about their work from time to time, I kind of like the direction they’re starting to take with a greater integration of watches and fashion. Objectively, this tilt is not unsurprising given the investment made by LVMH. At the end of the day, it’s like what we used to say about TV … if you don’t like it, just change the channel.
How about making your own content instead of talking about the content of others. Of course, talking about the content of others, is a content maker.....

Poor video, opinion based on 1 article, petty commentary criticising individuals for their taste and preferences, e.g. lot of older folks wore their day dates on leather straps, could have had sentimental value for the guy. Agree with the point though, esp based on how much trash you need to sift through to get to a real watch article on Hodinkee. It’s just the state of specialised publications with evolving demographics, where they need to cater to a broader population to drive traffic to avoid risking survival. Look what happened to DPReview. Hodinkee is not a watch enthusiasts’ publication any more, rather equally focused on generating interest amongst the wider public. Quality of content does go down when you try to have mass appeal.
