If you're wearing a watch then you're part of the watch community regardless of brand. Never paid too much attention to Hodinkee and that will continue.
I have to disagree with you. Some people put on a watch just because. They don’t appreciate the watch itself :/
As part of the watch community, wives are communal 😤
I agree and even disagree. A collector sometimes in his life reaches a point where he takes break or we can say avoids them. It's me even I really love them a lot but since last month I did not put them that much as that of past. Many of my watches needs service but are lying. I don't watch yt videos that much . I don't know why. But soon will return back
How about apple watch and fashion brand's watch? For most people (especially women) a watch is only a accessory. They don't care about the watch itself or horology for instance, they just want to put something pretty on their wrist. This is also true with the rappers who ice out their Rolex and AP. I don't think they consider themselves to be part of the watch community.
Hodinkee used to be the cool old school corner bar with plank floors and high-backed wooden booths, but now they're the members only country club that anyone with an actual personality wouldn't be caught dead in lol
One of Hodinkee’s biggest mistakes was to let Jack Forester walk out the door.
Maybe Jack Forester left for the reasons Jory mentioned in this video?
I though he epitome of snotty gatekeeping, "Everything is unisex now, I don't know if you got the memo" NoJack I didn't. You wokester weirdo, a flipping 26ml datejust is not unisex. This is just another piece of Hoodinkee horror, I just hope he doesn't ruin Watchbox
Casio Citizen Tisso and Raymond Weil make up my entire collection. An old Jeweler told me when I was much younger to wear what I like and not what I can afford and I’ll be much happier and He was right.
Tissot dress watch, Tissot sports watch, and soon a Tissot Diver. Don't need more. Less than 2.500$ for a 3 watch collection. 👍👍
Citizen Eco-Drives are just fukin great watches. I don't need status on my wrist.
“Oh we‘ve nothing to say, let’s scandalize a bit”. They want us to speak about them. Don’t do it. Act as they don’t exist. I love your R 1500, keep showing it in your videos!
I’m so happy to hear you going down this path. Hodinkee has been leaning so hard into the douchiest aspects of this community that it’s affected my own passion for watches by making me self-conscious that I might be associated with the snobbery and status-symbol worship they promote and attract.
My issues as well with them. Their lists of "best watches for summer" are a regurgitation of whatever trendy and expensive is at the moment, then throw a couple of low hanging apples that nobody hates but are all ubiquitous like Gshocks and Timexes and fun color Swatches, and boom, "they have a watch for every budget"
Nah fck no, your affordable, beater alternative to a Submariner is a Tudor so fk off
Ha, that's because Hodinkee's problem never was their relationship with watches, it was that they didn't care about their relationship with watches. It was all really about them using Hodinkee to do what they were doing no matter what: trying to be upper-class, in-crowd, elite, East-Coast 'club members'.
Who did they hire to write at Hodinkee: children of members of the 'elite', those from 'elite' schools, those who managed to marry onto the elite or wannabe-elite, those who were getting their foot in the door of the 'elites' because they were a new "find" for someone in the elite or its fringe.
And overall it was the basic elite leftist woke s***t, hiring 'BIPOC' woman writers just because of virtue signaling and "that's what you have to do to suck up to the elites", no matter how total beginners they are in regard to watches or how incompetent they are as writers.
I mean it wasn't just one or two writers who had no real expertise whatsoever. Hardly any of them even had any talent as writers: they just wrote "by the numbers" copy-pasting the kind of drivel they thought the 'elites' expected them to write.
Everything about Hodinkee is _a performance to the elites_ in order to be noticed by them in a desperate attempt to climb up the social ladder. And since those they are trying to please are the most empty, vapid, douchy circles possible, what other result could you get than the embarrassing s**t show we have been witnessing?
Wearing a G-Shock ("OG" 5600) and I agree with you completely. Every hobby has a snob section for the "cool kids." Hodinkee reminds me of the weekend warriors on Harleys who laugh at those of us riding Hondas or Triumphs or even older Harleys that don't meet their standards. They sit in a big circle and polish their...bikes, and the rest of us go out on the road and have fun.I figure it's the same with watches. They can sit around and debate the pros and cons of the latest 153B86L4400004M versus the latest 153B86L4400004ZM, and I'll put on a Seiko and go enjoy my watch.
After a few decades in the hobbie I've come to learn that it becomes personal style. Not everything is made for everyone, other groups can try to plant anything but what is mine is mine. And what is yours is yours.
Gone are the days that people just review a watch without poisoning it with their opinion.
Criticized Hodinkee for their use of reference number, finished the video with a reference number! 😂
😂 When he said "1500", I honestly thought he was going to laugh, but then he didn't... Awkward!
Not sure how Bryan from He Spokestyle ended up on the “uniform” list, but I will say… he’s a great dude, and a watch enthusiast like us. Everything else on this video I agree with 100%.
I'm wearing my beloved Casio W-86. It was my first "grail" at the age of 9 and I've loved it ever since.
I definitely like some of Hodinkee's journalism (especially the older articles), but they seem to be morphing into a soulless corporation only providing positive articles for watches they stock as an AD
I have no time for Hodinkee.
wearing a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical and agree wholeheartedly. There's a distinct sense that Hodinkee is cultivating a "smells own fart" community.
I loved early hodinkee, they opened my eyes to the beauty of watches. Then they changed... just look at Talking Watches with John Mayer 1 vs 2, 1 was a love letter to the wristwatch, 2 was just off to push the value of the watches upwards. Its disappointing. Then they killed watchville. I will never forgive them.
EDIT: I just heard my name be mentioned, hey Jory, whats up man, also, I don't own an RM.
When Jack left it said everything that needed to be said!!
I'm the proud owner of the Seiko SPB053, one of the most beautiful diver watches ever made. I bought this watch last April and I can't stop looking at the beautiful blue dial and beautiful and unique bezel. I believe that this watch even deserves the 8L35 Movement instead of Seiko's 6R15 movement that came with this watch.
I don't think you really put your finger on what the real problem is with the "Hodinkee Crowd" collector types. It's not being well dressed, and i don't think it's really about excluding lower priced watches. In a nutshell, i think the problem with a certain "collector" culture is spending too much of their focus on their collection, and not actually living a life, bringing with them the watches. Here's a thought experiment, go read Cole's piece from July 19, 2021 "Uncovering what scientists, explorers, and engineers wore on their wrists" and look at the authentic old photos of people living their lives with watches, rather than today's collector, who lives on social media, looking at photos and watching videos of people talking about their watch collections. If you overdo the "collector" thing, it becomes a substitute for having a cool life.
Jory, you make me laugh. Just finished watching Chronoglide. Love what Kalle Slaap shares. I'm not rich. Just bought a Marshall Field & Co. watch and I'm in love. It may have a Swiss movement or not. Reminds me of my childhood. It reminds me of wonder. 😊
"They're cucks!"
Brutal, but deserved. What a terrible idea/thing to reference for a watch article.
Word. I want to know who wrote that.
Aside from Casio, brands don’t mean much to me. I’ve got a couple of kickstarter watches, Aquatico, a Citizen diver watch…. Oh and my Casio collection is 3 rectangular G Shock, plus a silver and a black AE1200WHD, real classics.
I frequently put my watch on my non-dominant wrist to toss off in order to make my dominant wrist jealous.
I’m wearing my Citizen bullhead octagon, I love it. I agree with you, I’m not gonna love the same that watch as a lover, it’s weird when you love an object like a person
Worse still Hodinkee bought out and killed off the Watchville website. I certainly can't afford 90% of the watches that they cover on their site.
This!
I'm a pocket watch collector and don't even own a wristwatch. And damn proud of it!
Good for you.
Well done. I have two but don't wear them much.. One, a gift from my daughter, the other an heirloom, a 1938 Swiss made Revue gold plated watch produced for the Turkish Railways, and used by station masters at the time. My great grandfather worked for the Irish Consulate at the time and got one as a gift when he finished his stint in Ankara. It's been in the family and stills runs perfectly, serviced regularly. In a twist of fate this watch is back in Turkey as I've been living on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey for more than 20 years now, and even have taken it on a few trips back to Ankara. I always feel there is amazing history attached to vintage pocket watches. Enjoy your collection Patrick!
Just to be clear I don't own a wristwatch because I don't like them but I'm kind of "fidgety" and aware that there is something strapped to my wrist which drives me crazy. Same reason I don't wear any jewelry. Probably a character flaw on my part!
@@patrickmurphy3179 I got that Patrick, you said it in your initial comment. Good on you. If a wrist watch isn't right for you, the pocket watch is a perfect replacement.
@@patrickmurphy3179 🥴
Oh Jory, this is the age of the technocratic expert and Hodinke is just a reflection of this. I am old enough to remember when being an enthusiastic amateur was considered just about good enough for everything.
Guys who buy $6,000 travel clocks should deserve to be cheated on.
I guess I don't fit in their club. I enjoy my Seikos and Casios.
I love how Hodinkee now have to love Hublots since they were acquired by LVMH
I loaned my buddy, who is getting into watches, my Manchester Watch Works 62MAS last week, we are meeting for coffee on Thursday. After watching this video I am now eager to find out if I see my watch, or even my friend, in a different light.
I thought about wearing my Ref: XYZ330988203944AA333 today - but after seeing this video I'll indubitably be wearing the ZZZ39495TR339999 .... of course.
Norman, you make me laugh as well. I enjoy your night time reviews.
@@brennariley228 :) Thank you so much!
Omg. Dude I was going to wear my 6969, but my wife’s boyfriend is borrowing it, so I’m stuck with my j3rk0ff69. ☹️
@@thetimeteller lol!!
I'm wearing an Orient Mako 1 and a vintage Seiko 5 from 54 years ago (both with no hand-winding) overnight just to keep them running for the next day.
Hodinkess…more like So Stinkies. Gottem. I’m gonna show myself out.
I’ve been following Hodinkee since the early days and it appears I’m no longer their target audience.
You are bang on in your assessment, even down to their vocabulary. Listen to a podcast and you are guaranteed to get 15 references to “Inside Baseball”, “(something something) adjacent,” and the like.
The only remaining contributor I like is James Stacey.
LOL at 4:00, after all that, then, "now we begin the darker side of things". I didn't know it could get worse!!!
Totally spot on about Hodinkoids. I personally find it sad and pathetic how they have gone. This exclusive bullshit of maximum snobbery trying to dictate what is hot or not! lol
I'm wearing the Tudor Pelagos 39! The watch that so many bloggers really disliked (I think 90% videos are titled "WHY I AM NOT BUYING THE PELAGOS 39". Well this watch is basically my grail watch, I love it, and wear it all the time.
JORY!!!!!! Love this video. Don't get me wrong, I really loved Hodinkee, they are what originally gave me the watch bug, and I do still like a lot of their content. But I agree with everything you said. It has always felt like you hear the same things over and over again, and I never felt like I truly belonged in that community. It was basically "Oh Speedmaster this... Rolex is solid.... Patek and Lange's finishing...." reiterated. Plus once they started to introduce cameras and cars, it was confusing for someone who isn't into photography or old sports cars, to have the seem just as important as watches.
As time went on, it started to feel like you needed to be born as part of a rich Upper East Sider family to fit into the community, or be an insanely successful CEO of a fashion company.
Finally, to me, the worst part of all of their content was any one of them saying "It's not about how much it costs". Yes John Mayer, that is easy to say when you own dozens of $100k+ watches... That statement was made over and over again, but if you noticed, it was only regarding watches that were well above the $5,000 price mark. You never saw someone say, "it's not about how much my Timex Expedition from 2007 cost, that doesn't matter to me". I feel like the less you spend on a watch, the more that statement makes sense.
Anyways, huge rant. Love your videos. Appreciate your critique on this subject that was buzzing around the back of my head for a while now.
SPAM here^^^^^^^
I started collecting in 1981. Been wearing watches 13 years earlier. But 81 was when I started thinking I wanted more than one watch. Back then brand was a reflection of watch capability first and design second. Rolex and other luxury brands had to duke it out on the wrists of people wearing the latest digital watch with extra cool hi-tekky capability. The coolest TI or Seiko watch would get the oohs and aahs over a Swiss made traditional piece. My how times have changed.
Hodinkee and some other enthusiast sites/groups have gone so far away from the original concept of capability and design first. And have completely gone down the hole of exclusivity, rarity, value simply because of a designer name. Kinda not as fun, if you ask me.
Next thing they will be talking about is gender pronouns
Wearing my Casio Edifice EFV-100 and agree with everything you have said.
Is there any other way to contact you apart from this thread, as you have so kindly requested
As you asked Jory, today is my 1989 Seiko 5 Sports 70m. The refurbish last year cost me more than the piece. And hey...original bracelet 😎.
Love that Rolex.
I know he hates the brand but I was wearing a pretty sedate Invicta dress watch when my daughter was born, that watch is very sentimental to me and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I hate Invicta, too. But I get why you are attached to that watch. Maybe you'll develop a better taste before your next child is born.
My dad wore a beat up Camel Trophy Chrono when I was born lmao
Spot on with everything you said. I am wearing the Tissot Gentlemen silicon Automatic
Hodinkee's problem never was their relationship with watches, it was that they didn't care about their relationship with watches. It was all really about them using Hodinkee to do what they were doing no matter what: trying to be upper-class, in-crowd, elite, East-Coast 'club members'.

There was a time when I had interest in a Rolex. No longer. Rolex seems to attract the kind of snob I despise.
While I get the sentiment, kind of, it is a really bizarre way of putting it.
Like Jory I'm in to cars, and I've done a few tweaks to it. As it's my pride and joy, it's generally just me that drives it. But there were a few times where someone else got to drive it, and seeing it roll down the road and hearing the noise it made as it accelerated gave me a different perspective, and a new appreciation, for the car.
Car enthusiasm is also not the most mainstream of hobbies, but it's still more relatable to most people than using the analogy of a captain of industry in an open relationship with their partner.
But sometimes when you make a business of being the most pretentious person in the room, you need to compare it to more and more unusual things.
Refreshing to hear something I've been thinking for years. For some people watches are about themselves and their status. Insecure rich people who thrive on being "better" than the rest of us (even though I could buy their collection if I wanted).
You're wearing your Rolex Date. If you go outside your home, don't forget to take it off first. Safety first!!
I couldnt even imagine going to one of of those Hodinkee meet ups.I would be more out of place than a fish out of water.
I’m wearing a Seiko Flightmaster Alarm. I love this watch and it’s the watch I wear most often. I don’t have expensive watches, nor an extensive collection. But I can still love watches and feel a part of the community.
Jory, you can just kill two birds with one stone. While watching the Gentleman **** your wife, have him wear your favorite watch! Then you can see both from a different perspective.
...seems like Hodinkee tries to mimic latest Rolex strategy in a way...
Hodinkee writers are so weird and elitist.
Really awesome of Jory to mention Chris Harris!
5 weeks ago I took possession of my first watch, and Escapement Time regulator watch, from AliExpress. Yesterday it stopped working, so now I'm wearing my fitbit.
Also... DAFUQ, Hodinkee!?!
Nice watch. I'm wearing my JDM imported Orient traditional 3 subdial panda chronograph, which this morning I used my Hodinkee bedside clock to synchronize the time... Ok, I'm joking about the bedside clock.
My grandfather had that Rolex, the 60’s model on a jubilee. My father got that watch when his father passed away and I wanted to have it in the right time. But my father lost it when they moved to another house and since then I’ve been trying to find one.
It’s a beautiful piece. Congrats!
Bruh! Jory I know what they're talking about. I who play basketball 🏀 everyday found myself on my way to a game at the gym in the ghetto part of my hood. And half way there I noticed I wasn't wearing the right orient bambino the leather strap didn't match my Jordan's my guy I turned around and grab the bambino with the red leather strap to match my basketball short & Jordan's and I'm glad I did played my 1st triple double. Bruh! How cool was that.
I'm wearing my recently acquired Seiko LX Prospex GMT, SNR025J1, with Spring Drive. LOVE it!
Dude, I am a member of few groups on FB and dudes are taking photos of their watches like:”Took her out to Bali.” It reminded me of the kid painting a picture of their family and first picture is iphone..
I'm wearing reference number GA-2100...yes, a Casioak. $80 of pure Japanese precision.
Hodinky (hodinkee) in Czech just means wristwatch.
I have an Invicta Vintage Excalibur (model no.21977) with an NH35A movement, got it for free from a coworker. I love the blue iridescent watch face on it.
Brandon from Hodinkee is definitely the exception. Did a brilliant video on DragonBall Z Swatches 👏
Hodink was always a band of cringy zealots for me... * ζηλωτής (zelotes), "emulator, zealous admirer or follower"
*not enough food talk, very exclusionary...
Hodinkee wants to Phillips so bad, it's been obvious for a while now.
That is hilarious! I can’t believe someone actually wrote that
Yep, those 2 articles were f’ing batshit CRAZY. With Jack gone (and his FOUR nameless replacements) HODINKEE is getting more fringe, less enthusiastic, and snobby AF. Once James Stacey leaves (can’t believe he’s still there!) there will be nothing left of the original platform I once loved a lot.
The best watch in the world…is the one you love to wear regardless of what it is.
They have not only jumped the shark, but they've also put a watch on its dorsal fin
Vacuuming up the day's food and bits from the kids while listening to this and wearing my marathon gsar. Keep it coming.
Never been part of the crowd.
I believe the majority of watch guys like us folks love all kinds of watches and don’t snob others. Whether it’s an entry level seiko to a rolex or even an audemar’s.
Entry levels give people who otherwise wouldn’t be into watches get into the hobby and then look to higher end brands as goals someday.
There are the Hodinks and here is me sitting in a death metal shirt with my 5500 feeling perfectly fine :D
Condesending behavior is never pleasent, but remember what Eisenhower said, "Tolerance is a keystone to an man's maturity.". Unfortunately in today's American society maturity is a lost art. Great Video though, you're a great entertainer.
Wearing an HMT Janata!
I'm wearing a Seiko, reference number MONSTER. I know it's provenance. Originally purchased from Macy's with one owner.
Hodinkee just posted their Holiday Gift Guide for Kids and among the picks is a $50 Napa leather watch pouch. Seriously.
I don't like hodinkee because they don't spend enough time on the wonderful unboxing ritual.
"You're a horologist?, name every watch" lol
I went from expensive brands to inexpensive brands. Why? The inexpensive brands are more comfortable to wear. Citizen titanium watches rule.
Me: you are wearing a….uhhh…
T3: i wearing my role…
Me reading the captions: your wearing your Rolex date 1500! Ha I said it first…
Wearing my Invicta 0420 pro diver in titanium. I have a vintage Raymond Weil and a Movado if I have to dress up, but 99/100 of the times, my Invicta is getting the piss beat out of it around the homestead.
It's not marital infidelity if they are wearing your watch during marital infidelity.
I'm wearing my protrek Prw-70 titanium. I just got a used G-steel GST-B300-1AJF I'm dying to wear but its charging on the window sil. The owner must of stored it in a drawer.😅....😪
Not quite the same as the scenario described in that article, but I love giving my watches to my son to wear and enjoy seeing his enjoyment and appreciation of the watch and it makes me appreciate the watch and that I have a son who loves watches. So I guess I kind of see where they are coming from a bit. 😊
That's different in my opinion as your Son is an extension of you and you're giving knowledge of the watches and not just talking about how much it cost.
Enjoy your day, Friend. Health and happiness to the whole family.
Who hasn't tied up and blindfolded one of their watches before? Just remember to use a safe word.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hodinkee has become a place to hate read what DB's are saying about watches these days.
PS IMO calling yourself a 'horologist' is super cringe unless you're actually a watchmaker.
When I bought my black bay S&G I specifically sought out the hodinkee article just to read the comments. I spent like 15 minutes actually laughing out-loud
I still look at those comments from time to time 😂
I had the (now defunct) app Watchaville from Hodinkee (now I've the better and new Watchicity) and while, for instance, the comments below the fratellowatches articles were nearly all polite and interesting, those under hodinkee were among the snobbiest I've ever came across... No thanks, keep your watches, money and snobberism, the lack or education and "style" there was astonishing...
I think they're comment about needing to wear the perfect watch for his baby being born, was a bit tongue in cheek.
Not a big Rolex fan but I do like that one you are wearing... nice! I am wearing my Seiko SKX 009 on an Uncle Seiko Z199 bracelet.... You can't beat the Pepsi!
The real problem with Hodinkee is their portrayal of themselves as a pseudo serious horology/watch collecting magazine/media channel. All a complete fabrication. It is a business model, pure and simple. I wouldn't trust any review or article by them since they are all about how Hodinkee can generate more money. While there is nothing wrong in making money, there is if you're not transparent about how you are making it!!!!
Jimi Hendrix wrote a song in response to Hodinkee's article. It's called "Hey Joe".
I don't mind seeing someone review expensive watches. What bothers me is the neo-yuppie culture where only extremely high end items have any legitimacy. Imagine a car guy who ignores anything below a Ferrari or Rolls Royce. Gross.
Hodinkee hasn't put out any good content in a long time. They sold out.
I only buy affordable quartz watches & I have a very skinny wrist so alot of watches are too big.
I buy what I like & don't care what anyone else says as long as I enjoy wearing them.
Hodinkee is not what it was for some time now. I'm glad Jack has left the room.
To paraphrase Brendan “The Bard” Schaub, whoever recommended writing or posting that article should get their mouths pissed in!
From my point of view, if you’re not into what they are offering then just don’t consume it. It makes life much simpler.
If I saw my wife with another man, I'd just announce that I'm not paying child support, then go back to watching TV. And that's when I realized I've become Al Bundy :|
It was horology once, now lifestyle brand. BUT, it does have a place in highlighting the absolute absurd. I guide to how not to live like a douche. Not my world, but each to their own.
