Always a great video. I finally bought myself the xancudo just started carrying it. At work i drive a tanker truck hauling brine water from well pads. The salt water really rusted everything. I couldn't carrying my izula 2. So for the last few years i carred the K-Bar wrench knife. It held up good carrying it with the handle facing down. People on the pads was always asking me how i keep a crest wrench attached to my belt. Im sure the xancudo will hold up well. I always like the Esee products. Thanks for the videos.
I have a few Esee Izula's and Izula 2's in both 1095 and S35VN. I bought the aftermarket extended handle scales for the Izula's in S35VN and they feel much better in hand and in use. I agree with your statements, and that's one of the reasons I don't like coated blades.
If you attempt the heat anodizing again, I recommend slowing down tremendously, and maybe even going with propane. You can find a color chart for this process, and essentially make the steel whatever color you want, off of that chart. The key is, slowly heating up the steel. I find it to be pretty fun to play around with! Cheers
Tom, would you consider making a video where you make plastic liners for the Esse 3 out of a tub lid? I have done this after seeing your knife with them and love what it did for the way it now feels in hand. I think people would like to see it done….
I've seriously considered doing it, but to be completely honest. Tutorials are a major PITA to make and the return on investment, i.e. views, on such an endeavor, don't really make it worth it. Not many of us out there do mods like that. I would hope that by simply showing the end result, the source of the plastic, and maybe a hint as to how to cut them, then the average person should be able to execute the mod. It's not as involved as when I do total blade profile transformations. And...most people don't make an effort to do such a handle mod when they realize that they will have to put a little effort into finding new hardware to hold it all together. Thanks for watching and commenting as always and for the topic idea. I do appreciate suggestions.
As always... your revieuws are informative and - maybe even more important - with lots of humor! It is also nice to get this (Christmas atmosphere) insight of your home. Could you...if you dare... show us more of who you are & where you live? Because, I always think... this man is só diffrent, and wonder what more there is to know about you. Greetings Peter, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Greetings to you Peter. Your comment is so kind, thank you. It makes me feel good to know you liked it. Perhaps someday I'll do a Question and Answer style video that may give a little more insight into what makes me tick. We shall see. Sometimes those can be too revealing and with some of the nut jobs out there, I'd hate to have any uninvited guests appear! 😅
I really enjoy this channel. Too much fun. I've had an Izula II for 8 years now and always go back to it. I recently purchased a Bradford Guardian 3.5 in Cruwear steel because it looks similar to an Izula. It handles just like the Izula, but better. It's like a super Izula. Maybe you will try one some day
Ive got a late 90s ontario spec plus sp 95 ... i removed the coating on it 10 yrs back i just keep it oiled like my other carbon steel knives... any good woodsman should be able to sharpen a blades edge back up quickly with a pocket honing steel and sharpen if need be as well... the 90 degree spine and cs are how to get great sparks with a ferro rod too...does work well with SS... LIKE the handle idea i agree about 50.00 bills vs single 100.00
It sounds like you’ve really taken great care of your Ontario Spec Plus SP 95! Keeping it oiled and well-maintained is definitely the way to go. Those features you mentioned really do make it a great tool for any woodsman! Glad you agree with the $ denomination. Made sense after I thought about it for awhile.
In no way thought you were being critical. No worries. As far as artwork, I like all sorts of stuff, but frankly could not possibly care less as to what she hangs on the walls. My spaces, the basement work bench, garage, my shed (she has her own) and my office/studio are my spaces.
@ I’ve been collecting works by a couple deceased local artists (friends with one) since the 70’s. Very traditional stuff. We just added a first floor bedroom and twelve foot long hallway, and I plan on bringing more out of storage. I actually zoomed your video to get a better look at the works.
Could be those black flecks have contributed to your creative and interesting presentations. Really like the hat as well. Can you share where you got it?
Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate that. Bought the hat at TJMaxx. Was the only one of its kind there and is a fitted hat. No snap or velcro and is made by a hat company called '47. I knew they were good hats because I ordered one from them a few years ago that is camo and has a nice strap and buckle adjustment.
Thanks for the video… I do own two Izula’s and an Esee 3, I really like them but have a big concern when have used for food prep etc. I will keep them anyway,, will add an Opinel or something like it to solve the food issue. On the other hand, I live overseas therefore it is not easy to get Esee stuff down here. I have one of the Esee Izula’s sheath pretty loose, it almost can hold the knife in, is there anything I can do besides buying a new one, it is the plastic one that comes with the knife. Regards.
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. I too use an Opinel 8 in the kitchen. Your sheath may simply just be wearing out. Maybe a nice letter to ESEE would earn you a new one. I don't know if that would happen, but you could always try. In the meantime, if it was my sheath, I'd use a heat source, maybe a blow drier, heat gun, or boiling water, and soften up the throat of the sheath a little, give it a little pinch and hold it there while it cools. With the knife out of it of course. Probably would only take a little bit of movement to firm up the grip. There are only two little plastic nubs inside the sheath that actually hold the knife in.
@ Thanks for your prompt answer, I will try that out. Keep those videos coming. How about a video on other knives you carry, I carry an Esee PR 4… and looking for a Joker Nomad in the near future… Regards
Thank you for the kind words. Also thank you for video ideas. I appreciate that. I had a Joker Nomad. They make nice knives, but of the four I've had, I no longer have them. That may tell you something.
Had it. Again, past tense. Just something about them that did not bond with me. I really had high hopes for the Muk knife but that lasted only a couple days. Got it scarry sharp, but I just did not "feel it" with it. They are a good brand and the QC is pretty darn good. So, even though they are not in my collection does not mean they are not carried and enjoyed by lots of people!!
1. Good 😂 2. SKX009 with faded black bezel from SKX007. 3. No. I seem to remember they were possibly struggling, but under...nope. That sucks. They are literally down the road from Camillus that also went under if you recall. NY is horrible to industry!!!

So you’re saying the Esee Izula with the stainless steel blade is best for food prep or cutting a steak. I’m getting confused by all the different models.🤔

Probably my most used Farm Chore knife is the Izula with extended handles. Did a video about it. ua-cam.com/video/b0ko317v_-o/v-deo.html
Awesome video! I love your Izula videos. Happy Holidays! ✌️
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you as well!
👍 Very interesting video. Thank you.
The best “mod” one can make to an Izula is to replace it with an Izula2. 🤷🏻♂️
Clever. I see what you did there. Yes, the handle extensions are the best thing ever for anyone who wants an Izula II, but in S35VN.

Great advice. I'll definitely try that next time!!
I have a Izulla II & love it
Excellent. I sort of have one. Sticking with my "stainless" rule, I did this:

@knifetimestory Tom, I wouldn't miss a video. I'm stupid loyal like that, my Irish friend.
You truly are too kind. Thanks Jeff!!!

Thanks, I appreciate that. I try to keep it as real as I can.
I have 2, my go to day hike knife, and one in my truck survival box.
Excellent way to go!!
I present to you, the tool! 😂 Great video! Enjoyed your commentary
Glad you enjoyed that!!!
A 50% cut is good, 100% of the little black flecks of blade coating is excellent.👍🧐
Glad you liked that. Thanks for the nice comment!!
If I ever find an Izula, or purchase a used one, I will remove the handles and see what treasures lay underneath.
BTW... nice watch.

Do they have these in magna cut?
Nope. Probably never will.
I find that the sheath dulls the knife about 1" from the tip. Very frustrating.
Sounds like a possible buildup of junk in the bottom. Or a defective sheath.

That is correct. Remember what I said in the video. No black coating to flake off or wear off. No "unwanted pepper".
I have the bk 11 personally I like it better than the izula and it's cheaper 👍
I've tried to like the BK11. Just feels awkward in my hand.
@knifetimestory I get that the handle is not the most ergonomic honestly I haven't bought a production knife in a while the prices are out hand
I completely agree with you. On both counts. The handle is awkward… And the price of knives is insane.
