    Decades Later is so surreal, it's awesome to see the vague geometric playgrounds of SM64 re-contextualized into levels with more distinct theming and terrain. Seeing the original Rainbow Ride (a level that looks like it was cobbled-together from leftover assets) transformed into what looks to be a heavenly/regal palace while maintaining a lot of the familiar elements but rearranged is just the coolest thing. It's like looking at a SM64 from an alternate universe where it WASN'T the first game to figure out intuitive 3D platforming and as a result was able to make more coherent levels. It also gives off the vibe of what a SM64 2 could've looked like.
    There's a charm to vanilla SM64's abstract polygonal environments (something that I'm not sure can even be translated to an HD remake without losing something in the process), but the comparisons between even same-themed areas like the Pyramid are night-and-day when it comes to cohesion. I suppose we're all intrigued by the stuff we don't have, rather than the stuff we do.

    1:26 Funnily enough, I actually did guess Tiny Huge Island as my first guess just based on looking at it. Yeah it's a MASSIVE stretch from the original but I was able to make out enough vague similarities that didn't really match any of the other levels.

    Just subscribed. Great sumation of the Brodute hack. I was aware of this hack the first day it released. I downloaded it the very first week. ( Tested it for like 15 seconds to make sure it would run. ) I haven't come back to it since. I've been absorbed into MB64 playing other people's levels and building my own. Saw a short clip about BLUE stars and came to your channel typed "super mario 64 decades later star explenation" So I know the blue stars come after the main game. And then there are more stars after that. Not sure what the color order of it all is.
    Hey and there is also Mario Eclipse. Have that downloaded too, haven't played it yet other than the first cloud level.
    I'd say for romhacks Brodute is my next to tackle.
    I put off getting into rom hacks waaaaaay too long. Downloaded my first this May the clasic "Star Road" I 100%ed it and then moved on to MB64. Still stuck here man but what a ride it is. Just amazed with all the levels people are making. Since romhacking is more accesable to everyone now, I think we are going to see a lot more people get into this and we can only expect more and more amazing things to come.
    Appreciate your journy you've gone down. I'm in a similar boat. I just want to play, so thought I'd upload my videos because surely other people will also enjoy watching game play. I don't plan to make this into my main job just a hobby. But do want to connect up more with like minded people who just love 3D Mario games and hacks.

    The one thing I hate about this romhack is the music. Like, if your hack is supposed to be a revitalization of Super Mario 64, take Super Mario 64 music to work with, not Deltarune or whatever. It's the most annoying trend in game modding.

    • @elweegee3575
      @elweegee3575 7 місяців тому +14

      I agree with you, I preferer brodute use remix of the original songs and not convert the Reimagination of SM64 in another Star Revenge.

    • @BroDute
      @BroDute 7 місяців тому +24

      Let just put Bob-Omb Battlefield music and put it into a Candy Level or Space Level, that for sure would fit...
      Do you want every hack to consist of 13 grass themed levels or something?
      If you want to mix it up with level themes that weren't in vanilla sm64 then you need music for it and most of that music you find in other games.

    • @Eichro
      @Eichro 7 місяців тому +17

      @@BroDute I'd consider two possible approaches, either different remixes of the same theme or just take different songs from the Mario series. Taking music you like from whatever else really breaks immersion for me.
      (There's a third option, which is to make original music, however I'm not entirely fond of that one unless it's for an entirely original stage, or something... for consistency's sake)
      It's like those Smash mods that let you play as Goku or something, I don't know about you but whenever that happens I really feel I'm not playing Smash anymore. Which is alright if the mod is NOT supposed to be faithful, but otherwise... eh

    • @sorryshysleeper
      @sorryshysleeper 7 місяців тому +4

      @@EichroYeah I lowkey agree on this one. I’m all for creativity but at the same time I like the feel of immersion that doesn’t break. Hence why I usually prefer it when for example; someone remixes soundtracks from any of the Mario and Luigi RPG series into Mario 64 style. I also still question to this day why Goku, Shrek and SpongeBob were unironically requested to be in Smash of all characters(since Smash was supposed to video-game characters only at least from what I remembered). I know that was a joke but still.
      TLDR; I always preferred being very faithful to the source material but occasionally I like to experiment on it too.

      @SomeRobIoxDude 7 місяців тому +6

      @@Eichroalso, pretty sure you dont play sm64 rom hacks (and rom hacks in general) for immersion, bcus most of the time you play them for the levels and extra content added
      Tho there are some hacks that do focus on immersion, hacks are mostly made for like i said, the content
      Some people in this reply section dont realize that rom hacks are made to express the creator’s creativity, and wanting to limit it bcus it “breaks the immersion” is kinda dumb
      …tbh, out of spite i want to make a rom hack thats as unimmersive as possible
      Also sry if this sounds like i misinterpreted ur comment cuz like, it just sounded kinda rude?

  • @SomeRobIoxDude
    @SomeRobIoxDude 7 місяців тому +3

    The moment i finished the hack i knew you would make a vid on it tbh
    Also, the amount of people in this reply section who say they dont like the hack that much for trying something different from the original level themes is worrying

    • @elweegee3575
      @elweegee3575 7 місяців тому +2

      It's not that we're saying that the hack is bad, I actually liked it a lot, I'm just saying that for a reimagining of SM64 it seems something apart.

    I like the blue stars aesthetic. They remind me of the game FEZ where yellow cubes (the game collectibles) are easy to get while the blue cubes require more thinking/skills.

      Personally I'd say Super Mario 64 Sapphire is a good sort of starter hack, it's pretty small but quite good and on a similar level to the base game. It's not something too crazy or intimidating, just a good ol' Mario 64 time.

      Two of the most famous old hacks I'd point to on short answer are Super Mario 74 and Super Mario Star Road. Those are real Hall of Fame titles and the first two that I would recommend if we're talking old stuff.
