Good to know. I got one of these emails that purported to be from SLB. But I thought it seemed kind of dodgy.
I did get once of those, it was asking me to reply via telegram, and since I have no idea what Telegram is, I just ignored it.
Thank you both congratulations on the great channel
The best glass is the one thats in front of me filled with whiskey
Here! Here! Well said, sir.
I think that says it all!
PREACH King 😂
🥃 cheers
No arguing that point!
I kinda wish I would of seen a snifter and a mini glen in this line up. I feel like this is going to need a part 2 in the future. So many glass options out there!
I have a set of mini glens, they are my favorite
@@robertstrickland2121mine too! I’ve got 24 and sample multiple at a time and feel like I get so much more experience out of using them as opposed to sitting a long time with one in a normal glen. Plus, they’re a bit more appropriately sized for some people.
Same!
How about Norlan tumblers?
We use Glen Cairns for first-time sipping and rocks for usual pours, as we usually add a cube.
We’ve been looking for some additional sipping glasses other than our glens. Appreciate the honest reviews and thoughts on the different styles. Would love to see a part two with even more options.
Good idea!
When I first started I drank my whiskey in a rocks glass over ice. As I've developed my nose and palate more, and gotten into the overall experience, I drink it neat in a Glencairn. I won't be going back. But it's fun to see a show like this and how one compares to the other. Good job boys. Cheers.
Since I would never drink whisk(e)y on ice, my clear choice is the nosing glass (Glencairn or a variation thereof). If you like the flavour of the stuff you can't go wrong using that type only.
I enjoy using different types of glassware to sip a whiskey out of. Probably my favorite is the old rocks glass when just enjoying a pour, but for a tasting the glencairn is the best for sure. The glasses that were second from the left looked like mini spittoons to me!
Great video! I drank my whiskey from a large shot glass and complained that I never really “got” the nose. When I was given a Glencarin glass for Christmas and had my first pour with it, I was absolutely amazed at the difference it made! The experience with a Glencairn is so much more satisfying then without. If you’ve never tried it, you need to get one, you won’t regret the purchase.
I agree 100% about the glen. I'm going to pull the trigger finally and get on board and really experience the true flavor and nose of the spirit. Cheers fellas.
I have a glass similar to a glencarin shape, only it holds roughly 2.5 oz. As long as I am only having a small pour, I actually prefer that glass over anything else. The nose is better than the regular glencarin, probably just because you are closer to the whiskey.
I've used everything from Waterford crystal to Dixie cups and directly from the bottle--Rebel Yell before I was legal, WR101 later on. I have many of those glasses for when I have guests, but alone, I am easy to please! As always, an excellent video. Thanks1
I sip from a stemmed wine glass that is shaped roughly like a glencairn glass. I use a double rocks glass when I sip over ice. I guess I should also mention the small cylinder shaped Flintstones glass that I think originally came as a jelly glass. It works well for sipping neat in a pinch!
I use an IPA glass and love it, kind of like a large Glen Cairn, great for nosing.😎
I've been using my wife's tiny Mason jars which work rather well but are probably better at storing jam.
Aged and Ore and the Viski glass are my favorites.
Aged & Ore neat glasses are also terrific. I think the Glencairn is still best for aromas, but I enjoy the neat glass for sipping. It feels more secure in my hand, too. I've just ordered their blind flight kit, which has smaller versions of the neat glass.
p.s. Speaking of travel kits, definitely check out Aged & Ore.
Can confirm. Love mine!
I absolutely agree! The neat Aged and Ore is GOAT! I don't own one, but I bet my friend wished I did lol!
I will check it out!
I have a set of the Aged & Ore and really like the glass. It has a great look and feels nice and solid. Guess I should compare the glencairn to the A&O and see which is better.
As you held up the glasses the joke went through my mind, “… directions are on the heal.” I have several glasses, use a few. I have a favorite - none of those. 😄😄
Arizona is a great place to live. Glad you like to visit. No sense is buying glasses on vacation! Viva red Solo!!🥃
I completely agree, the Norlan rim is way to thick and ruins the sipping experience for me.
You know, I learn something knew almost everytime I watch this channel. I never relalize how the shape of the glass can appeal to the nose. Trent does a great job of explaining these bourbons on the nose. Great job guys.
ive only been drinking whiskey for about 2 years now but Ive always used a double rocks glass to drink neat whiskey. I've only seen those glasses in old western films so I assumed thats how it was done lol
I bought some Waterford rocks glasses 40 or so years ago and there is something classic and elegant sipping a fine spirit from that cut crystal...
The Copita, also from Glencarin, might be one for you to try as well. Since I often pour a half ounce to an ounce for tasting, I have considered buying the smaller ‘Wee Glencarin.’
Took me a bit to come around to the Norlan glass after first getting them but I love them now and the thicker rim is no longer noticeable or bothersome to me. Love drinking from the Norlan but I still use the Glencarin when i'm nosing and tasting a new bourbon.
I bought "official bourbon tasting glasses" off the makers mark website. They're by far my favorite glass to pour into. Think, a thicker glen but shorter and stubby. I would likely break too many glens if I drank out of them.
I'm glad that people are bringing up the Glencarin Copita glass.
My favorite is the snifter/balloon glass. Also the glencairn. You do get more ethanol from the snifter but so nice in the hand. Great show as always.
One you missed that I love for neat whiskey is the Gibraltar rocks glass, too small for rocks but perfect for neat pours
We like to use small stemless wine glasses we got for tasting at wineries. It's widest at the bottom like the Glencairn glasses, but isn't as funneled as it comes up, but still seems to collect the nose a decent bit. We do have something like the second from the left with the pinched and fluted edge that we got in a gift set with some scotch, but haven't used those much for whiskey tasting yet.
Glencairn glasses and the like are fine for tastings, but if you're going to be sipping a scotch or bourbon all evening, the intense concentration of the aroma is going to blow out your sense of smell fairly quickly. Rocks glass is the way to go for a longer session.
My son bought a set of Viski glasses an I bought a set of Norlan glasses and we sat down with 14 different types of bourbon an tried the noseing an tasting of them to get the exsperence of it. the Norlan glasses won by land slide. But one thing we notice was that after rinsing just with water an wiping after each use we notice that the Norlan glasses took on a maple smell. We plan on getting different glasses an try it again.
ee
Only ever used a rocks glass, I'll be getting a few Glen's after watching, thanks for all the information, I only ever drank beers before as I couldn't find a spirit that I liked, I drank the odd Blackbush or jameson only because I'm Irish and everyone drinks them, so glad I tried bourbon as I really look forward to the weekend and enjoying a few 👍
It does look like a coffee Chemex pour over. My first thought was it looks like a miniature saloon spittoon.
I’m really enjoying the Spiegelau Willsberger glasses for whiskey right now
One note. The Viski double walled glasses have ridges in bottom that aerate the bourbon when you swirl the glass. Compare a swirl against the Glencairne and you notice the difference. Other than that, Trent’s description was perfect. Too wide a rim. Have to be cautious not to drip down your lip while sipping.
I ordered the same competition glasses on Amazon and absolutely love them. I can't use any other glasses now. The nosing capability is far superior to other glasses I've used.
The Glencairn Copita glass is my favorite for nosing and the glass I use when I want several small tastes (1/2oz pours).
I have a big glass collection, so much so that I have to sneak them in now, or I get in "trouble!" 80% are rocks glasses and I have ones that are old fashioned glasses only as they are slightly bigger for those big chunks of clear ice. I like drinking different pours out of different glasses, it enhances the experience for me. I have an old Fitzgerald glass that will probably stay empty for many years (bc I never see the bottles in the wild and ain't paying secondary!) so not only do I get to select the whisk(e)y I also get the excitement of picking a cool glass as well.
Guys, just found your channel a few months back. My wife and I love sharing pours with you and your family. Thanks for keeping it interesting and simple and fun. I had more than a few from a rock glass also but The Glencairn wins. **Cheers my friends **
Whiskey does not need a glass it’s already in one!😊
Great video. Finally broke down and ordered the Glencairn glasses on Amazon.
The bottle works nicely as a glass as well!
Cool video, thank you! So lately I've been getting emails that there is a response to my comments, and one said to contact you on a messaging service, while one today actually said to text you and gave a phone number. These both said they were for a giveaway. It seemed weird, because when I clicked, it took me to the video, but there was no response to the comment. I'm thinking it's spam. Just want to alert you. As always, you guys are a riot to watch, and I've learned a lot, too. I've watched a few other whiskey channels, but you guys are the best I've seen. Seriously, thank you for your hard work!
Sorry those are strictly spam. I hate scammers
I learned from a seasoned bourbon drinker that the trick when sniffing bourbon is to block one nostril off and sniff, and then switch nostrils, and you will pick up different smells.
Thanks for the heads up on the Rye Whiskey Trenton! Found some locally at Total Wine and more in Grand Rapids for $35. They have a double oaked verision and cask strength version also for about $60. Another excellent video! Looking forward to the day I can share a dram with my son. He's 22 currently.
Those competition glasses look completely impractical. I need some now! 😂
Lol! Little awkward to get used to but will def do the job!
Pleasantly surprised by today's video's topic. As a bourbon drinker for 7 years, and only really a serious one for 2 years, I've always drank from a rocks glass. I still only have one Glencarin on my bar cart. That being said, when I'm trying a bottle for the first time, I'll use the Glencarin as I feel I'm getting the "purest" experience. Really cool video guys!
Because of moving, my glencarin glasses got packed...early which left me looking for something for my pour. Ended up with a long stem champagne glass and found that is a good glass for bourbon! Give it a try!
Cam from drums and drams has a similar glass with the flare, but it was more of a glencarin shape, he said he likes to drink the higher proofs out of it because the shape lets the ethanol escape a little better. I want to try one.
I got the Norlands as a gift some years ago as well and the kids bought a set of Glencarins for me for Christmas. Agree with you that the nose is enhanced vs the Norland. That said, I do find that it’s easier to drink from the Norland without having to tip the glass way back when the quantity is small so prefer it overall. The thickness is interesting. My wife has some really thick normal drinking glasses and I hate them but I don’t have the same issue with the edge profile on the Norland.
I always use Glens for bottle cracks and blinds. Recently I got a mini-Glen for when I want like a 1/2 oz tasting. My fave for day to day sipping is the Aged & Ore Neat Glass...solid enough aromatics, and feels nice and heavy in the hand. I really enjoyed using a Copita...for about 3 weeks...those things are a break waiting to happen. My recent experiment is the Viski Tasting Glass...a lot like the Norlan, but with these swirly grooves inside for aromtaics...in theory....like the Norlans and the Copita, ya gotta be so careful with it at all times.
Our favorite glasses are the "Wee Glens" great for Bourbon tastings!
The competition glass looks like a fancy spittoon!
Great stuff. Agree across the board on those glasses. Norlan worked really well on a few single malts, but never worked for me with bourbon or rye. It also was off putting how light it is overall, I think a little added weight in the base would do it some good, although it still wouldn’t address the thick rim. Neat glass just seems awkward to me. For special pours I am a big fan of the Glencairn Copita. When I am not necessarily “judging” a whiskey, but just want a bigger pour of a daily drinker, Canadian Glencairn, the size and weight of a rocks glass with some of the GC curve.
I always use the Glencairn when trying a new whiskey, although if like to try some others.
The rocks glass always gave me different aromas based on where on the glass I was sniffing.
For just sipping and enjoying a whiskey I really like the Canadian Glencairn. It has the shape of a Glencairn but the size of a rocks glass.
Something I learned when I went to different wine tastings is that the more you have to tilt back your head the more of the drink will naturally land further back of the tongue, which can give you a different impressions of what you're drinking. If it lands on the tip of your tongue you'll register more bitterness in the drink and if it lands further back on the tongue you'll register more sweetness. Maybe that's why the competition glasses are designed the way they are?
Now I don't know if it's actually scientific but that's what we were told at least. 😅
Bourbon glass from Denver & Liely has replaced my standard glencairns. Quite a but sturdier than a standard glencairn.
I love this ish. They make those neat glasses with a bottom on them, similar to the glen, so you can grip the bottom. I’ve all these glasses and I would go ‘neat’-1 glen-2 norlan 3 rocks-4
Love the show, always look forward to your content, wondered if you had used a copa copita glass
I had not but did order a couple from all of the suggestions.
Awesome video was actually looking for something similar the other day, as I am investing in some glasses soon. It would’ve been interesting to through the VISKI ALCHEMI glass into the comparison. Apparently the groves in the inside glass wall help with aeration, but I haven’t had the opportunity to try it for myself.
Interesing ! I usually use a rocks glass ! Thanks guys! Will be picking up some glens for sure now though😉
Fun video. You have used one of those a couple of times. The double wall glasses that were a gift. You used them in the Thomas H Handy video, and one other that I can’t recall exactly.
Awesome video, really enjoy the side by side notes from different glassware! Trenton congrats on advancing in Matt Madness!
KURT!!! TRENTON!!! I just bought some Glencairn's, and I can def tell a difference between glasses!! I too am a simpleton, but I def love my glasses!!! Great video!!! CHEERS!!!!
I love that you use the good old reliable red solo cup Kurt! Also when you're just sipping at home to enjoy do you still use the Glen or do you use a rocks glass or maybe something else?.. I typically always use the rocks glass but I always drink mine on ice unless I'm tasting or comparing or doing a blind
I’ve got the “competition” a few months back and love
I have a set of 2 Liiton Everest ordered today....the idea of using the base camp to the Pinnacle as measuring spots ( eliminating a jigger) as well as the chilling aspect ( eliminating ice) piqued my interests..will see
Good old rocks glass is the work horse. Mixed drink, on rocks, neat. My wife yelling I have taken up to much room with all different glass styles in cabinet haha
I just picked up a neat glass this week. You are suppose to smell right in the middle of the opening, compared to on a Glen I find the most flavors around the edges.
I live in Las Vegas where the company is based so I got an explanation of how it is suppose to work and a mini side by side comparison tasting before purchasing at my local liquor store. I plan to do a number of side-by-side tastings with it and a Glen but very limited sample size so far. Largest noticeable difference for me is that I get a lot more oak from the nose in a glen, so if you think something is too oaky you can swap it to a neat glass and find some of the smells hidden under that oak.
Because of this observation I imagine the largest noticeable differences will be on well aged bourbon and finished whiskeys. I definitely plan to do my next tasting comparison with belvanie double wood sherry finish.
I forgot to mention, as Trent pointed out there are 2 ways to hold it, above the whiskey and below the whiskey. This is to allow you to control the temperature of your whiskey so you can warm it with your hands or let the ambient temperature cool it by adjusting your hold.
Also you are suppose to swirl in the neat glass, although it is unclear to me if it is suppose to be a gentle swirl or a full Porter SJ, I guess some experimentation is required.
Thanks for your knowledge!
On your recommendation I will be buying the Glencairn glasses. I would recommend a Manhattan in the double rocks glass. One parts Vermouth, 3 parts Wild Turkey 101 with some angostura bitters. With a large ice cube.
I’m sipping Anita’s Choice while watching this. It’s a two year old, SIX grain from South Carolina. Drinks way better than a two year, in my neophytic opinion. Please check it out if it’s available in your state! I’m a fan.
Great video! For neat, I prefer a single over a double rocks glass for those times I'm not using a glencairn. I own many more doubles than singles since the double rocks glass is a popular gift for whiskey drinkers.
I got my neat glasses while traveling the Bourbon Trail at Wild Turkey. They had the Norlan glasses too, which I should have bought because they were cheap back then; you live and learn. My giant honker prefers the nose on the neat glass but that thing is hard to drink out of. So, yeah, it's the Glencairn overall. And the rocks glass for Scotch.
Definitely need to add a Snifter. I would love to see you guys do this blind if possible. I always "taste" from a Glen but I drink from whatever glass is clean. lol But for first time tasting or doing any comparisons, I use a Glen.
Love the videos! I look forward to them when they come out and I was wondering if you guys could do a 1792 distillery review. Anyway thanks for the entertainment and info on the channel!
When I started watching reviews recently, I ordered some Glencairn glasses for sipping. I had always mixed my drinks, but am trying to develop a notes pallet. Nice glasses.
Thank you!
I have a set of Norlans and they're cool, but I agree that I don't love the thickness of the rim. My favorite glass is actually one I picked up at the Oban distillery (part of the tour when I went) that is basically a stemless Glencairn with a slightly larger than normal bowl. It's my go-to glass for every day. I use the Norlans for presentation with guests.
I’m just glad to hear you guys properly pronounce it a Glencairn glass as opposed to calling it (glen-karin) 😉🥃
Great video gents I’ve always wondered how much a glass can change a whiskey!
Fun show.... Thanks guys!
A few quick sips out of the bottle is best for me .
The glass I use the most is similar to glass #3 but not pinched in as much. Also only neat.
Denver & Lily glass! You WILL like it!
I love "neat" glasses. They are nice for sipping.
What about the mini or “wee” glen? I love them for blinds!
Great idea! You picked my favorite Sagamore for your pours! Nice spirits
Red Solo Cup . . . gotta love that '-)
I use a glendale nosing glass. Just a fancy glencairn. The rim is a bit wider by a hair which I prefer. Awesome content gents.
Check out Aged and Ore neat glass. It has become my favorite. They make a travel kit that would be good for your trips.
The reason the Norlan rim feels weird is the double wall means the liquor is pouring at a different angle than the outside of the glass. To their credit though, Norlan is more forgiving to whiskeys that don’t have a great nose. There have been pours I disliked in a Glencairn that were much better in the Norlan.
I really like the simple rocks glass for all occasions.
Awesome video as always boys! Though I prefer the standard glencairns, copita glasses (basically a glencairn with a stem) are really nice, too. But like you always say Kurt, drink whiskey whichever way you like it! Looking forward to the livestream later this week! Cheers!
Coptias are a slightly smaller mouth opening which I find works well for low proof
This is an interesting experiment that I may have to try myself. Also, Kurt it sounds like you should invest in yhe aged and ore travel glass
The Neat glass supposedly dissipates the ethanol bette, preventing nose numbness and leaving the aromas of the whiskey itself. I found the notes are far more subtle however than with a Glencairn. The wide rim might help wash the whiskey over the front of the palate better too at first dip
I used to drink out of rock glasses. I recently purchased a couple of glencarin glasses. For sipping neat the glencarin is definitely the way to go.....
Great video guys and very interesting! Like the glen’s for sure. (Keep hoping I get me SLB ones soon as Legend Patreon member. 😉)
I have found the Viski scotch glasses are a home run for tasting bourbon
I have those glasses, also bought on Amazon. Wish I hadn't bought the two in middle. Glencairn reigns supreme imo
Some of the alternate delivery vehicles I've enjoyed, honoring the Red Solo Cup notion brought forward here (actually, it's more the context that makes them special, but the non-conventional glass adds to the context):
- from a small Stanley flask on the flank of Mt. Baker as my son and I set up camp for the night
- from a red solo cup (!) fwith a respectable pour of Redbreast 12 while standing in a group about the site where we'd just spread the ashes of an Irish colleague
- from a Ball Company disposable aluminum cup with my wife at a spectacular viewpoint in Zion National Park
- from a sheep's skull with dear friends in Galway
- from a hollowed-out potato in the office during a rather rollicking celebration - NO idea why we had a potato, let alone why we didn't use the paper cups or coffee mugs that were readily available; well, actually, I do know - and that's half the fun of using the hollowed out (with a staple puller) potato ...
- from the glass my father and mother used for their first toast at their wedding.
A pretty self-serving list - but thanks for the opportunity to even think about it.
I normally use a rocks glass. Just received some sniffer glasses. Perfect for smelling.
I have some of the neat glasses that look like spitunes. It's a weird glass, but it definitely helps with nosing.
I've been wanting to pick up a pair of norlan glasses.
If you want a Glencairn experience but want ice. I recommend a Canadian Glencairn. The Canadian has that Glencairn feel a little lighter on the nose but pretty similar. Yet gives you enough room for an ice cube or two. It's especially awesome for high proof drams.
