My dad was a racing driver here in denmark,he was drivning the toyota corolla gti and the twincam ae86 and ae92 models but against renault clio peugeot 205gri 309 gti and so on.. I just love alle the 80s and 90s gti cars the where awsome. Rip dad u are missed a lot.. ❤
Very good looking car. And the dashboard and controls are impressively clean in design. Peugeot had the luxury of being a little late to the party with the 205, so benefit being able to see what their rivals did first.
My friend did a full nut and bolt restoration on a 1.9. It was truly stunning condition selling for £22,000. It drove amazingly well but the years have moved on and the performance was slightly lacking when you have turbocharged non hot cooking hatchbacks with 200bhp now but for a nostalgia buzz it was unparalleled and took me back to the early 90s when I had one. I’m looking forwards to your 309 review as I had one of those too.
Definitely 1.9 wheels on that. IMO the 1.6 was the best car for tight roads I've ever driven. The suspension was so perfect it used to do improbable speeds over nasty undulations and across cambered roundabout entrances. I had mine in the air lots of times too as it flattered my boy-racer proclivities. I traded it for the 1.9 immediately they came out and was left disappointed. The 1.9 didn't feel much faster and had lost the perfectly judged suspension. Moved on to a Golf 16v - that was also disappointing but in different ways. Ahh - nostalgia.
Have a 1.9 1990 Miami blue limited edition .Had it for about 18 years.Had a 1987 1.9 prior to that for 13 years. Certainly great cars of the time .A different era, more involving.Certainly attract a great deal of attention when ever I drive it. Beautiful styling that still looks good today .That said my Mini Cooper s F56 2016, is probably as much fun ,if not a bit more . The car you tested had incorrect seats and incorrect wheels for a 1.6 .Looked a bit high at the back on the suspension, probably because of the wheels .That is likely to have affected the price at auction ,as not original.
The BMW Mini is a pig compared compared to the 205 GTi, certainly faster but no comparisons in everything else. Also the 1.9 wheels certainly an upgrade, you are paying less for getting more hahaha
Definitely a bargain, I've seen loads of 205 GTi's for sale at ridiculously high prices, you got to look hard to get a low priced one. I prefer the 309 GTi, I'm sure they all have the 1.9 engine (correct me if I'm wrong). I have my eye on a nice metallic light blue 309 GTi for sale on eBay for over £6k - very tempted!
Buy it! The GTI 309 did only have the 1.9 8v but the Europeans got the 309 16v. I found mine to handle better than my 205 1.9 and it felt a bit more grown up and put together. They also have very cool manual opening rear quarter glass that you open via a system down near the handbrake. The 205 is the prettier car but the 309 was always my favourite.
yeah 4-5k doesn't get you much in the way of 205 gti now! id tend to agree with you, ive done a review on a 309GTI not that long ago, yeah only 1.9 8v. I would definitely add a 309 to my collection!
Might upset a few but i had a few different hot hatches in the 90s and for me personally the R5 turbo was the car to have they were nuts, mk2 xr2 where far the best handling out of all of them imo, the mist underrated car of the 90s was the 309gti they had everything you wanted imo also, in summary thats the 3 id have in my garage now if i could
Bought a 1989 1.9 (130 PS) version back in 2009 - at the height of the financial crisis - for £1K. The most fun I've ever had behind the wheel. It was always so puppy dog eager! Even pottering around town it was fun! Two and a half years later I had a 1992 130 PS 16v Escort XR3i. Got it for £2K. It was a better car - in the dictionary definition sense of the word I guess (felt more sturdy, was more spacious, larger fuel tank etc) - but whilst it was somewhat fun if you pushed it, it was nowhere near as fun as the 205 GTi! In the shape those cars were in when I bought them they'd go for six and three times the amount I paid all those years ago respectively!
@@RetroRatchet Wish I still had it - as Ford only made about 1200 of them so they were always rare - but it rotted from the inside out which rendered it pretty much worthless 😪. The Pug felt zippier at lower revs. The 130 brake XR3i felt swifter at higher revs and generally had a more tractable engine. The 1.8 zetec engine boomed like a cattle auction mind you at certain revs and vibration could be felt through the steering wheel and gearknob even on start up. However both cars had a certain amount of character, which modern motors largely have engineered out of them 😥
In fairness everything had poor brakes in the 80’s, I had an Alfa Romeo 33 that literally had not brakes and when it did the deceleration tore bits off the rusted 3 year old body

Corolla GTI would be nice to get on the channel!
I think those alloys were originally only on the 1.9
Yes you are correct. They were standard on the 1.9 GTI. They suit any 205. Brilliant design 👍
yup suit it well
Very good looking car.

hi, I much preferred the 309 GTi tbh, just felt the better car!

long ownership!! id love to add one to my collection

The 309 is possibly the very best hot hatch from Peugeot, but its lack of racing heritage and its Talbot origins made it forgotten

hello mate - yeah id certainly like to try a mk2 XR2..... let me know if you find one for a review :+)
Hi. Just found your channel 😊
hello, hope you enjoy the content.
Bought a 1989 1.9 (130 PS) version back in 2009 - at the height of the financial crisis - for £1K. The most fun I've ever had behind the wheel. It was always so puppy dog eager! interesting, in the early days of the channel I drove a 105ps version of the xr3i and was pretty impressed with it, be good to try a 130ps version.

I used to have one back in the day, and later a Clio Williams ph1. The Clio was the better driving car. IMO.
would love a shot of a Williams !
Quite right. Those look like 1.9 alloys. Actually prefer the proper pepper pot ones for 1.6
I wonder how did the Vauxhall Astra hatchback did with a 1.6 petrol engine did against the Peugeot 205.
What a car, see if you can test the 1.9 version so you can compare.
would love to find one
I had 1.6 and 1.9 both great cars, i also had 5 gt turbo 205 much better road manners but gt was bit of a nutter
I done a review on a 5gt turbo and I know what you mean, id agree with that
Excellent motors had a 1.9 good engines and brakes nothing felt anywhere near as sharp to drive.
be good to try a 1.9
Here is a link to the races he was Walther sambleben My dad..

thanks I just watched it, great seeing those hot hatches battling it out!
Sooo... the best one was the 1.9 not the 1.6 and those wheels are from the 1.9... absolute sacrilege to have them on the 1.6.
The 1.6 is junk, xs is hetter
Very over rated
r u not a fan mate
@RetroRatchet don't see the hype, they was far better cars in that era even the xr3i was better 😂
Pug 105's were rappid but both 1.6 and 1.9 had very poor brakes.
In fairness everything had poor brakes in the 80’s, I had an Alfa Romeo 33 that literally had not brakes and when it did the deceleration tore bits off the rusted 3 year old body
