I had 4 205 GTIs in my day 1.6 and 1.9 good car. But £65 K is a madness. You can have two VW clubsports for that or an Audi RS4 B7 with wing backs for £20k get the engine rebuilt for another £20K and happy ever after. Or build your own 205 as good ones are still available for £15K and put a MI6 rebuilt engine in or K20. Nobody wants a digital dash in a car that never had one.
@@DriverReviews A great car for those who can afford it and that are also 205 Gti enthusiasts (Im slightly biased as I drive a 205 Gentry, which is effectively an automatic 1.9 Gti).
I had one in the 90s when I was in my early 20s. Hard to believe you could pick one up, and get insured at such a young age. Glorious times, with my tape deck! For the amount of design, manufacture, engineering and hand built finish this is a bargain!
@@gavinwhite9743 unfortunately it was for that very reason that led to inexperienced drivers messing about and given the name of boy racers in their golf GTi s Peugeots 205s and their xr2s that sensible young drivers now find it hard to afford to insure their own cars...yet boy racers still exist in the sense of their well off parents now just afford it for them leaving the not so well off youngsters without
i worked in a Peugeot/ fiat dealer body shop when these came out and was told to deliver a 1.6 back to a customer. i took it back via the town centre, i was 17 and it felt amazing
I wrote to VBH when she was at Max Power about my 1.9 205 GTI that I flew 280ft and backflipped off an on coming Astra. It was a crash I was blessed to walk away from, doesn't dampen my nostalgia for the cars at all!! 205 is and 5 GT Turbo will always have a place in my heart. hopefully soon my garage too.
I had a 1988 Graphite Grey 1.9 GTI as a 24 year old back in the mid 90’s and I have to say, it’s one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. It felt so quick back in the day, but seems pedestrian now by today’s standards! A twisty country road was definitely its happy place. I have toyed with the idea of revisiting my youth and getting another one, but I’m in my 50’s now and need something slightly less ‘tinny’ and with a few more creature comforts these days!
What. a. treat. to see the legendary VBH back on screen doing what she does best. Reviewing cars an being an absolute boss at it. Good to have you back!
I had a C registration 1.6 GTI 105bhp back in January 1986 (before the 1.9 existed) it was a cracking little go cart of a car, older style dash that looked like reinforced cardboard but I loved that car, kept it for 14 years and the engine still didn’t burn any oil between oil changes, but I did change the oil every 6000 miles from new.

Had 2 mates crash their 205 GTi’s from the rear end flipping round on them in bends giving it beans so I went for a 1.9 309 GTi - that was SUPERB loved that car - could really throw it about - wish I never traded it in 😢
My first car I was given on my 18th birthday by my parents. Superb handling, sporty acceleration and still comfortable driving. Still looking to buy one adding to my car collection
25 years ago I had a 1.9 Pug in red with a Janspeed DTM Exhaust (deafening at any speed) , along with 2 immobilisers and alarm. Fitting the CD multi changer in the boot, I drilled into the fuel tank. My daily 40 mile 'A Road' commute, coupled with a heady mixture of exhaust sound, The Prodigy and fumes hurt my head every day! Had to get rid when my Mrs back then was 8 months pregnant for safety reasons :) Lift off oversteer... the scariest and most embarrassing experience ever!! Keep up the great work Vicki, love this channel!
Great to see you again Vicky. Tolman have done a great job, outside looks original to my eye, the inside however steals the show for me, plush seats etc. I don't recall much luxury in those little cars. Big bucks for a resto mod but then again those loonies in North Wales are asking £140,000 for a brand new Escort Mk1 with a fantastic new engine
A fantastic trip into the glorious past. I worked for Peugeot Talbot back in the 80s and the 205 was fab as a basic hatch, a GT or GTI. The first one delivered was a cherry red 1.6 on an A plate. We queued to give it a test drive. An icon
I had 3 red 1.9's. The last had a Skip Brown 'S' conversion done at £2750 in 2002. That gave it about 160bhp. It's still alive in Scotland I hear (J69MBA). I wish I never sold it.
Here is a bit of information bellow But there in lies the appeal of the 1.4-litre AX GTI. Sneer at its 100hp and 89lb ft at your peril, because even though it's nearer to 800kg, what's that really? This is still a quick little car. That single-cam two-valve 1.4 TU was as sweet as candy, and strong to boot. Max power came at a zingy 6,800rpm. As the 'I' in the name suggests, it's fuel injected and not dual-choke carb'd like the earlier (and lighter still) 86hp GT, but throttle response will seem lightning fast, undimmed by the tragically endulling effects of emissions legislation over the last twenty years
Love the channel. Old school talking about cars and driving them. Vicky you are still a delight to watch and listen too as you were on Fifth Gear (which I personally preferred over Top Gear)
I had a Red G plate 1.6 back in the day. Why, why why can't I afford one of these. I would buy a black 1.9 with aircon, and put the origional badges back onto it. My life would then be complete and I could die a happy man. VBH great vid.
Lovely. I even like the electronic dash - very nicely done. However one thing they could have thought about for these is a subtly integrated roll cage. The 205 was made from tin and will squish like a soft drinks can when hit. A friend of a friend was killed in one and would have been saved by the cage that he'd ordered but hadn't yet been fitted
I had a 1.9 back in the 80s, it was great fun but it flexed like mad when cornering hard - in one case the passenger window fell inside the door whilst I was going around a large roundabout, and the boot would often fly open when really hammering along a bumpy road. It's scary to think these things might still be on the road 40+ years later with all that metal fatigue!
You must have had a lemon then. I had 3 1.6s and 3 1.9gti and never had those issues. They interior did creak though as the plastics and build quality was not the best.
Absolutely love it, but not at that price! Had the original 1.6 gti in white 'E' reg. Had a lot of cars since but that was still my fave, I was the envy of all my mates.
I had 8 205s from when I was 18 to 35, 2 x 1.6’s and 4 x 1.9s and then a mi16 and the final boss was a 2.0 turbo converted running 240 hp Amazing cars, i want another one! There is obviously demand for this conversion and given it’s a year project the price reflects this
I wouldn’t describe the lift-off oversteer as notorious. It enabled you to drive extremely quickly on twisty country roads. I know , I did a lot of country road miles in my 1.9 in the 1980s. It was a bit knackered by the time it was three years old!
I had a silver phase 1 when I was 22 (99), paid 1800 quid, it had a lightened bottom end, and reworked head, absolute flying machine, I was devastated when the big end bearings failed. They were throwaway cars back then, so I foolishly sold it for 300. 😢

For 65k you can get a beautiful classic that was built as performance/luxury car from it's inception. This may be a classic to some but its still just an economy hatchback with a bit of pep under the bonnet. Just my opinion.
You’ve got to really love them to spend that much on one today. I had a silver 86 1.6GTI in 1990, was great at the time but no way could I justify paying that much to have one now. You could buy a 911 991.1 GTS for that money!
A _key_ Vicky? Good Lord, whatever next?!😁 Always thought these sat so right. Fantastic packaging too. Though I seem to recall the slack gear change. And twitchiness at the limit. To be fair I run outa skill in a pedal car so... I had an R5 Turbo for a while. That could be "interesting". If I was looking at one of these I'd add an LSD.
