Just love these old Volvos, I especially have a long time love affair 700/900 series Volvos, your 740 GLE is a great example - it's going to be amazing when fully restored. One gripe I have with that car it has a manual sunroof, but I could live with that. I am still considering the Boston green BMW 325 tds as it ticks all the boxes, and being a diesel which is big plus for me, but there is one major box it doesn't tick - it's not a Volvo😉

If it was serviced regularly then expect some 400 tsnd more miles out of it.

First video of yours that I've seen, it came up on my home page. You've just earned a sub! Can't wait to see more on the 740. I have a 1990 740 GL turbodiesel with the 4sp overdrive gearbox. I'm told there's a vent under the dashboard for the footwell, mine lets in freezing cold air, and water from somewhere as well...

Sunroof drains will be the cause of the leak. Need to unblock them.

It's a commendable project. I could even be interested in taking part in the future or arranging a similar event locally. Just a slight fact check, the Esprit shown is a 1990 Turbo SE and not a Series 4 or S4 which came slightly later.

Blimey - no rust. I had an ex-company blue one which ended up absolutely mint and sold it privately. The buyer came back an hour later complaining of a misfire so I asked him to take it to a local Rover dealer for diagnosis. Heard no more - I guess the dealer told him he'd got a bargain given the condition/price which easily covered the cost of any fix.

FWIW the speedo on my 480ES packed up on the way to its MOT but apparently not a failure point and it magically fixed itself. Given how many long established aftermarket cable manufacturers there are I doubt getting new handbrake cables would be much of a problem.

I have had 5 240 estates, all had 250k+ miles on them, never had any breakdowns, they just kept going! I had 1 manual car, but always preferred the auto versions, especialy in GLE trim, so comfortable on long journeys!

The MOT history makes an interesting read, but still worth putting in the work.

Looks like a great buy for £1500! My parents had many Volvo 144, 240, 345, 440 and several 740/940… not the last word in handling but way up on comfort, safety and dependability. I can see the appeal in the estate body.

We've got the same Volvo on our channel. We fixed the sunroof leak by upgrading to an electric 940 sunroof. The Speedo issue was the wires had frayed on the plug. It failed on holiday in Ireland. Drafty foot wells will be the vents. We just had to refit the springs on the catches. I currently can't solve the lumpy idle issue. Buy a spare fuel pump relay. Ours failed in McDonald's drive through. Looking forward to more Volvo content.

Also I think the 740 has an additional footwell vent for fresh air that you can open and close with your foot. Worth checking that it’s not just that.

Just FYI, the panels beneath the headlamps were always silver regardless of body colour. Great video, like you, my parents always had Volvos!

I had a standard 740GL in the early '90s and have an 850R sitting in the driveway slowly dying, awaiting restoration. Just great cars.

If you were to sell this now fully restored what sort of price would you be asking for it? Deffo not looking to buy it. Just curious. My uncle had one and I remember it being the fastest thing on earth.

I bought my first Weber carb- ed XR3 4 speed from our local main dealer as their demonstrator, it was one of the red TTW launch models and went like a train. The Capris and RS2000 were all well and good but the fwd made for superb roadholding. Followed up with the XR3i, then another after rear suspension mods when the lovely Rosso Red was launched. When I advertised the facelift white one for sale yes, the girls were fighting over it! The RS Turbo was a disappointment, then lots more XRs, now a Focus ST Track Pack in Fantastic Red. Seems everything, and nothing, changes !

My dad had a montego E666 TJW a 2.0 Mayfair many happy holidays in the car. Unfortunately back in the late nineties it had been sitting on the drive for awhile and the rear arches were rusting but with only 40k on the clock we hoped a enthusiast would be interested sadly not and it went to a rover breakers.

I love this channel. It will be interesting to see how many people renovate EV's in let's say 10 years? No doubt the mostly the gullible who purchased them will be told it's an exhaust problem, sparkplug issue or the wrong type of antifreeze that's been used since the warranty expired from the main dealers; Shyster and Shyster Ltd. I’ve watched a lot of your show videos and thoroughly enjoyed your knowledgeable presentations. I wasn’t aware you had so many projects on the go and I don’t know how you can find the time for all of them. I’ve only got one … it took me 7 years to restore and get it road legal, and I’m still improving it. I have a soft spot for your SD1 coz I had a burgundy T reg 3.5 V8 manual back in the day. If I were you I’d make your SD1 a ‘keeper’ 👍
