  • Please subscribe! This is a DIY wheel winch similar to what is commercially available from Bush Winch. It's basically a PTO that utilizes engine horsepower to get you unstuck. Demo truck has Truetrac worm gear LSD and 32.5" AT tires. Video about making the DIY ground anchor that was used in this video is here: • No Trees to Winch? How...

great idea of cutting and tapping wheel nuts, and never thought about running a stake rather than tying to tree etc.

Now that would have been useful on my dad's old farm. what a great ideal. Thanks for the tip.

Frank, I watched your vids on stroker builds and I’m just about done with my bug out bronco (331 granny 4 speed, all new driveline/suspension/etc) and now I’m watching the wheel wench vid, unfortunately fuel will be too expensive to bug out! We’ll have to stay and fight I guess 😅

Search "woodgas truck" on UA-cam and prepare for your mind to be blown.

Nice build. But what happened on the other wheel? Either you had the same built there or your had a dif-lock, otherwise the opposite wheel would have just rotated freely, right?

No spin. Trutrac worm gear LSD with 3:1 torque bias (see video caption/description)

    Really smart idea!

This only works if you have a rear locker. If you don't have a rear locker, you need two 12" wheels with straps or cables.

Won't work with a simple open differential. Need a diff that allows torque to both wheels. Apply light brake pressure with the open diff might make it work with those types of diffs.

Faster than a flip flop wench for sure. With the price of the deeper lug nuts, bolts and rope post plandemic it comes down to is it worth the two hundred dollar difference you save making your own verses buying. If you don't have the tools it's just not worth it. Not knocking what you did, it's a fantastic diy, im just commenting on the high price of the parts nowadays. Just getting a half dozen fittings to get my cargo trailer conversion plumbing and 4- 4" threaded nipples and connectors to screw them down was a hundred forty eight bucks. If i had the rims and good drill bits with a welder I'd make a couple for sure, I've been looking at which would be best with this and the track claws system.
Great video, I'll have to look around and see if i can scrounge up some rims and borrow some weld time at my buddies shop. Did you take off your tire to get the bolt pattern right? I imaging that was the most important thing about this project.

When I made this video, the bush wench was a lot higher price. Apparently they've had some motivation to lower the price... 🤔

If you have an open diff, like most trucks 4wd or not, if you apply this to one wheel and you are truly stuck wont the other wheel just start spinning? Bush winch provides 2 of these in their kits.

Yes, the demo truck has LSD. If you have an open diff, you will need a winch on each wheel.

But with a most-common open diff, you would need one on each wheel.

Shouldnt you use the wheel winch on both sides to avoid any risk of damage?

    • @fastfrankd
      @fastfrankd  3 роки тому +4

No. All the one-sided wheel winch is doing is giving one wheel much higher tractive effort than the other, and the max stress on the axle and differential is determined by the bias ratio of the differential, not the wheel winch. No more damage would occur from this than climbing a steep rocky trail with 1 tire on firm dry rock, and the other sitting in loose sand (such as Moab Canyonland trails).

And the original has an OBSCENE price tag. This DIY was very much needed.
      Nice job. 🤜🤛
