I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this video. It’s just so comforting listening to you talk about a show i loved so much as a child with such enjoyment and actually making me think of the themes and what they meant for me.
*Karina posts a 53 minute video about Yugioh GX* Finally, THIS is the content I long to see on UA-cam. Karina, I have never loved you more than when you open with a 20 min discussion about Misawa. He's honest to god my favorite GX character, and when the show finally stops even giving him the time of the day is when I dropped GX
49:38. He’s all alone in a dessert with his demon still attached to his soul and the ghost of his former teacher. But he has this note from his friends that says when you are ready we are all here. - I’m crying so hard right now....
Do you think that they should bring back Gx because it felt like a cliffhanger for the characters, and it just seems like there got to be more in the story after the adventures in Duel Academy?
I wasn’t expecting to cry so much today. As a 24 year old Yugioh fan that also suffers from depression from time to time... Yugioh is so comforting and relatable. People look at me strangely when I express this because Yugioh is unfortunately masked as a “Kids show” but the characters and what they go through are so relatable and I feel I could go on and on about the life lessons I’ve learned from this show.
"Growing up... It's sometimes not okay" Yep, think you summed it up really neat there. This was a fun video, had me laughing in some spots because, yeah, GX does have these really good themes it explores and it's one reason why it's been so close to me for so long now (especially as I'd been subbing it) but... it really does have a guy who strips for a run across campus (which, like, Misawa becoming a meme RIP), DINO DNA... Those little quirks just help haha. I do really love how the Marufuji brothers' development gets fleshed out by Season 4, too, and Shou's development episode in 137 helped that. Also, Chronos is best professor, talk about character development right there!
Like others, I'd just like to say I'm so happy these videos are back up. It's entirely your choice what you put on this channel, but these videos about a subject I don't really care about bring me so much joy, due to both your personality and your clear passion.
along with the dude who was lost in the jungle for years, the countless weird artifacts, the abandoned dorm, and ghosts. the duel academy straight up just keeps one student locked away which i always found wild. GX introduced some of the most popular archetypes and was really the series that expanded heavily upon the concept (there were Gravekeepers and Toons in DM but that's basically it). HERO (and its many sub-sets), Ancient Gear, Cyber Dragon, Ojama, Lightsworn, etc. All of which are still enjoyed by a lot of people and still get support. Each character had a recognizable cohesive theme that was more specific than just "some bugs", which helps to create each character's mythos. Jyudai uses Heros, Asuka uses Cyber Girl, etc. Characters were always associated with certain ace monsters in DM of course, but this idea that each character had a cohesive deck theme instead of just random single copies cards is also a good way to teach kids the basics of organized deck building (and again, archetypes makes this even easier). GX also had the guts to take an afterthought concept, fusion, and push it more towards the forefront with new support cards that made Fusion easier. GX is also the only spinoff (aside from Sevens, sort of) to revamp an old concept instead of just creating a new one, which from a marketing standpoint is a larger risk (something new is usually a safer sell). There are definitely things to dislike about the series, particularly with how slow it starts, but GX set a lot of standards for the franchise in terms of both anime and the TCG/OCG that are still present today. The most common reason (and likely the most unspoken one) that GX gets hate is because it followed DM. That was a tough act to follow and people don't like change. There are other, more defensible reasons to dislike GX of course. Like I said before it takes its sweet time establishing a status quo before actually getting into any serialized storytelling, and a lack of any particularly interesting villain is also a drag. People also like to rag on the dub, which I don't understand. Just go watch the Japanese source and be done with it then? Like so many anime dubs of the 90s and 00's it has a lot of censorship to minor junk, but some of that stuff is pretty clever. Chumley/Hayato's father uses all sake/alcohol cards and in the English it was changed to hot sauce. This is because of the term "sauced" being slang for drunk, so while its a censorship of the direct references to booze, it still coyly refers to it. That's pretty clever. Still, GX has a lot of enjoyable merits, and any lame parts can just be back round noise while you play Duel Links or whatev, so who cares? The series also dares to deconstruct the stereotypical shonen male protagonist throughout its run, and you've gotta respect the gall to do something like that in Yugioh of all things. Best of all, GX introduces Kaibaman, and that alone makes it all worthwhile. Wrote way too much, and could probably babble far more, but youtube comments are like screaming into an bottomless bucket and I'm sleepy. P.S. Chazz It Up/Manjoume Thunder!
Do you think that they should bring back Gx because it felt like a cliffhanger for the characters, and it just seems like there got to be more in the story after the adventures in Duel Academy?
@@dariohieras9186 I really love Yuma's character too! I think Yuma's development is less impactful because he's a bit younger and thus his childlike attitude fits him more. He still goes through a lot and changes as a person but unlike with Judai where the changes are physically reflected in his design and attitude, Yuma's innocence remains until the end. By the end of GX Judai is a completely different person, he isn't even human anymore. And I think that combined with GX being a coming of age story made it hit harder.
I think Yuma’s is much better as Jayden’s was very inconsistent and out of nowhere in my opinion whereas Yuma’s was slowly built up throughout the show.
@@trogbison1625 Jaden isn't inconsistent at all though? Sure one could argue it's out of nowhere, but it happens because of an event he experiences, not something that just happens.
Karina, I genuinely don't care about nor know anything about Yu-Gi-Oh, and yet I heard you reference this video in the latest drawfee video, and I simply couldn't resist. I love your voice, for one, and there's just something special to me about hearing people ramble about their passions. So, congratulations on capturing an hour of the time of a non-Yu-Gi-Oh fan talking about Yu-Gi-Oh. I enjoyed every minute
As a middle schooler, Bastion and Zane were my favorite characters in GX because I liked the nerd and edgy badboy archetypes. As an adult, they're still my favorites, but now it's because their character arc themes of feeling left behind by your friends and everyone around you and being a gifted kid who crashed and burned under the weight of everyone's expectations hit waaaaaaay too close to home. This was a nice reminder of why all these years later I still remember GX so fondly despite it being kind of all over the place.
Im serious, your voice is perfect for it, become a nerd asmrtist. Just do long videos of soft spoken yugioh or other anime recaps and fun facts and hot takes. You will be a star.

"Yu-Gi-Oh has some really weird plot lines like: 'What if we played Yu-Gi-Oh, but on motorcycles' or 'What if aliens were among us and also played Yu-Gi-Oh', or god forbid, Yu-Gi-Oh: Civil War 'What if every Yu-Gi-Oh series got together and fought behind a Denny's'." That legit made me subscribe, that line was amazing lmao
I do like how it made total sense for Judai to start seeing duels as life or death battles and not fun games anymore after all he experienced. I think Yugi went through the same thing himself really, in his time Duel Monsters went from a normal card game to the vehicle for him to rescue his grandpa and then the whole world a couple of times.
Yugi took it all surprisingly in stride. I guess you could say he had experience with the Pharaoh turning ordinary objects and games into death games already, but still, the gang's all like "saving the world? Got it, who do we have to card game"
I haven't thought about Yugioh in probably more than a decade, but you tell the story of the guy who fucks the tiger so vividly that I'm having flashbacks. I'm starting to realise that I didn't forget Yugioh GX. I repressed all my memories of it. EDIT: Oh God I'm at the end and I'm tearing up and you're supposed to be the really cheery member of the Drawfee crew and why are you making me cry?
I was obsessed with Yugioh GX when I was a kid too, but around high school I got really embarrassed about that fact and it stayed that way for a long time. Whenever I hear Karina talk about it though, I feel proud instead. I'm really glad this video exists.
I never realized how much of an effect this show had on younger me. I loved it so much, then got really confused when season 3 got depressing. I love it more now as a depressed adult. Great video/deep dive

i got really into gx when it came out, and then back into it again when i was like, in late middle school/early high school, and judai's arc really hit me so hard even back then when i genuinely thought things were gonna work out for me in the real world. i'm finding myself turning back to him as a comfort character once again now that i'm four years out of high school and still just,, nowhere with my life and struggling with depression and ptsd. it's really nice to see someone who gets what really made gx so good, and that you appreciate the goofier aspects alongside the serious stuff. makes me feel less alone. great video, karina!

I just want to say I fkn loved Misawa. He was my second favorite character in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and I am so glad someone else recognizes his greatness. I also really loved Ryo's and Judai's character arcs because of how depressing and real they were. This was how I interpreted the series when I watched it too! This gave me so many re-feels... GX is absolutely brilliant. Of course, I absolutely love 5D's and Zexal too, but gotta give credit where credit is due.
I think the major thing that you missed about the ending is that Yuki LOSES to Yugi at the end and he's 100% okay with it. Totally encapuslates the spirit of the "failing is ok" theme.
Do you think that they should bring back Gx because it felt like a cliffhanger for the characters, and it just seems like there got to be more in the story after the adventures in Duel Academy?
I recently binged from DM to 5Ds. While that gave me a new appreciation for those, GX still holds a special place in my heart. You're too right; it's the best Yugioh series.
This video officially convinced me to watch the rest of GX. Loved season one but was on the fence because of the depressing themes in the later seasons.
Try out Season two of Yugioh Arc V that is set in Domino city with the same Class warfare vibe as in 5ds ,and Jack Atlas and Crow Hogan features in it, and forget about Season 1 unless you've watched all of season 2 just to get a better grip on the Characters.

Thank you for making this public again!! I finished GX awhile ago and really was hoping to be able to watch this video after haha. I loved it! Loved this video too lol GX really is simultaneously the goofiest but also the realest
Were it not for nostalgia of old monsters, GX would definitely be my favorite. I’m a huge fan of tcgs that push Tribal synergies and I remember being so hyped for gx that when I seen Jaden used elemental hero deck (with no support in TCG at that moment) I built this Uber jank Elemental deck based around element saurus and the other monsters in the archetype. Watching the video as I type. Bastion was def one of my favs and I wish we’d get his fire dragon archetype. Love the video. Stay safe!
I love yugioh GX, first yugioh series I've ever watched. My favorite is honestly Vrains. The story is so tense and almost every character completes their arc. Aoi Zaizen is the first female protagonist actually kind of feels likes a person throughout the entire story. GX was good and I love Jaden, but I wish side characters got more important on screen duels . Like Banner just defeats the remaining students with Spirit keys off screen.
For the Bastion part. I busted out laughing at "Laying on thick." bastion went from the genius to the nobody. Asuka is the best chick she had cool cards and was the only character who had a ritual deck. Plus her brother was a cool element in the story and it was a major part of the story in two of the season and its a way to show her caring/vulnerable side. Zane was a boss, talk bout losing everything and getting it back. Zane's transformation was quite interesting and it sucks we didn't see a rematch duel between Edo. I think Edo is a great too but like many characters he had great potential which I wish they used but all well, especially since his deck in competitive yugioh was quite popular. Judai definitely a great protagonist seeing how he was an innocent character who got pushed to the limits emotionally, come back stronger, and rekindling his lost charm and positive nature in way that he was able to balance it and still be a great adult. I'm shocked you didn't mention his behavior when he was tagging with Yusei and Yugi to fight Paradox, that right there showed how much he healed and growed since his series ended and GX deserves a sequel no lie. Overall great video and this was quite enjoyable. I always like GX and I feel its like the original Gundam. On release many people didn't like it from my experience but later as it grew people respected it
If anyone wants the translation of the letter left by Jaden's friends then here it is Sirus:Jaden you left without telling me. Chazz :come any time and let's duel . Hasselberry :don't you forget me. Blair/clair: it's me Jaden. Alexis: LET'S MEET AGAIN SOMEWHERE, OK ? (and on the letter she is blushing really hard as you can see. ) Addicas : I'LL LEAVE ALEXIS TO YOU JADEN. And someone (I don't know said: move forward Jaden
I did not think I would be watching an hour-long analysis of Yugioh GX today, nor that I would go to sleep having strong opinions about a minor character from it. But here we are.
This is the content I’ve been waiting my whole life for 😭❤️ really straddles that line between ASMR, podcast, and nerdy shit that no one but me cares about.
This whole video is how I felt writing an entire essay on breaking down Edo's character. Also the fact you say that GX does a good job of balancing all the characters in Season 3 is so true so I wish I knew why some people think that if Edo wasn't in Season 3 it wouldn't any different when he's just doing his best. (Edit): I would like to point out that it wasn't the collars that made Ryou's heart get fucked up but actually the Cyber Dark deck itself because he didn't respect it enough. Shou started getting the same pain Ryou did but Shou learned to respect the deck and so it didn't hurt him. I think Ryou still would obviously get heart problems but he said he'd make a brand new deck from scratch to work with Shou's so they could tag team in the Pro Scene together, so he may not be able to be AS active but he wouldn't be in that much pain anymore after some healing time. But that's just my theory.
Somehow, this ended up in my recommended, and I'm glad it did. I really enjoyed your analysis; though, I don't agree with some of your points (ex. Akiza from 5D is the best YGO girl, but they do waste her character too), I do agree with a lot of it. Misawa was shafted, and I never understood why. What made it even worse was that he was set up as the perfect foil to Jaden, and it pissed me off they wasted him. I do love you brought up the mature themes of GX and the difficulties of adulthood. Overall, great video, and I hope you do an analysis of the other YGO series.
This was delightful! I haven't seen any yugioh since i was in middle school and drawing yugioh fanart for candy but it was really cool hearing you ramble about all this weird as hell stuff :D
You give off some Jenna Marbles-like vibes and I'm all about it. This was super in depth and I couldn't imagine the amount time it took to make (on top of Drawfee stuff)! You're amazing and I love your content, so thank you!
Sometimes when im feeling down i come back to this video, the passion and joy Karina exudes when talking about what she enjoys is so wholesome i cant help but smile, thank you for making this!
While dm and 5ds are my favorite yugioh series gx is definitely underated for its mature theme towards the end of the show and also both the original and gx did a great job of showing the feeling of aimless emptiness that many feel when they have achieved the goal that was set out for them. Yugi helped atem save the world and gained friends as well as independence and Jaden saved his friends and the academy in a similar fashion, but both Yugi and Jaden had a sense of "now what" that is very poignant for so many in our generation. Yes we made it through high school, college, maybe even got an okay job, but are you complete? Do you feel good? Is this the state of your existence for the rest of your life? Obviously these are very complicated answers and different for everyone, but seeing this in the first 2 yugioh protagonosts, and the only ones written by Kazuki Takahashi is a very coming of age message for all of us who grew up watching and were inspired by the characters.
Does anyone things that Yugioh GX gets the short end of the stick when it comes to the story and the ending because the other main protagonist gets a happy ending except Jaden/Judai Yuki he became a wanderer after his adventure in Duel Academy because he's a magnet to danger, and doesn't want anyone he cares to get hurt. Also, do you think that they should bring back Gx because it felt like a cliffhanger for the characters, and it just seems like there got to be more in the story after the adventures in Duel Academy?

I honestly only remember the bit of Misawa dueling the tiger gal from GX and I'm glad you spoke in detail about it because I needed this closure. Thank-you.
I was introduced to GX through Duel Links, and I watched the first episode a couple of years ago, right after watching Duel Monsters... and dropped it. I really enjoyed Chronos/Crowler, and some of the themes, but I did not care much for superheros replacing mythical beasts or Yugi/Atem's confident passion replaced with a boyish giddyness. But I remembered from Duel Links a really cool fellow that focused on statistics and formulas, turned out that this was Bastion/Misawa About a month or so ago, I did decide to watch GX in full and I really fell for the idea of Bastion's character but did not care how it turned out. Especially in the last season. I didn't mind his arc taking him further and further away from his friends. There is something sad about Bastion. He tried so hard to live up to the ability he was told he had, but failed and in his hope of trying to regain this passion he lost his friends. Bastion joined the Society of Light for the purpose of feeling like he was somebody, to belong again to a group, but in the end he was ignored there too. He truly did find his calling by working with Eisenstein/Zweinstein, not all paths lead to card games. Personally, I would have liked Bastion to have been a secondary antagonist in Season 4. I find it ridiculous that a character "Sorano" shows up with the same idea as Bastion, (look at your opponent's strategy and try to counter them) loses to Jaden/Judai and becomes a puppet of Darkness. Apparently this one single fellow with his "Almighty Black Horus Dragon takes down most of the students. This would have been so much more effective if this were Bastion, having given into the darkness of his heart of his desire to be someone and showing his full potential against all students, even his former friends. Yes, he would still manipulated by Darkness, but with his seven decks, and encyclopedic knowledge of everyone's decks and strategies, it would have made a lot more sense for him to have taken out the majority of Duel Academy then this nobody Sorano. I liked GX, but I think there was definitely some largely missed potential.
Even from when I first watched this show in my childhood, I always remembered bastion as the guy who fell in love with a tiger duel monster. That's how much it stuck out to me x3

*Karina posts a 53 minute video about Yugioh GX*
Finally, THIS is the content I long to see on UA-cam.
Karina, I have never loved you more than when you open with a 20 min discussion about Misawa. He's honest to god my favorite GX character, and when the show finally stops even giving him the time of the day is when I dropped GX
@Hiroki Matsuyama people use the word simp way to much now lmao

49:38. He’s all alone in a dessert with his demon still attached to his soul and the ghost of his former teacher. But he has this note from his friends that says when you are ready we are all here. - I’m crying so hard right now....
I was maybe trying really hard not to cry while in the grocery store, when I hit that part. Maybe it's time to re-watch gx..
I still rewatch this video every now and again, I think it's become one of my favorite lowkey youtube videos to listen to
I've never felt anything more than "LittleKuriboh is funny but it'd be nice if you wrote your own material instead of spouting it ad nauseam at me."
@ryder100 Some of the self-referential humor is...remarkably derivative, to put it nicely.
Ok but I still like him and he’s iconic ok?
"Growing up... It's sometimes not okay"
Yep, think you summed it up really neat there.
Mokey Mokey man stay strong in there.
also i loved chum lee's character arc. and i just love chum lee in general. he went from such a spiteful lazy dude to a guy who found what he was really passionate for and broke away from his father and became an artist. love that for him. we stan a koala king
Mokey Mokey kid deserves his imprisonment for daring to use those monsters.
Chumley fans rise up
GX introduced some of the most popular archetypes and was really the series that expanded heavily upon the concept (there were Gravekeepers and Toons in DM but that's basically it).
Judai's character development is the best in the whole series
Dapple mii yuma is literally a more developed version of judai.
Ob course it is.

That legit made me subscribe, that line was amazing lmao
I repressed all my memories of it.

i got really into gx when it came out, and then back into it again when i was like, in late middle school/early high school, and judai's arc really hit me so hard even back then when i genuinely thought things were gonna work out for me in the real world. i'm finding myself turning back to him as a comfort character once again now that i'm four years out of high school and still just,, nowhere with my life and struggling with depression and ptsd. it's really nice to see someone who gets what really made gx so good, and that you appreciate the goofier aspects alongside the serious stuff. makes me feel less alone. great video, karina!

1 minute in and this video really got me thinking "Karina, I completely agree with you, but I would like you to explain further."
I think the major thing that you missed about the ending is that Yuki LOSES to Yugi at the end and he's 100% okay with it. Totally encapuslates the spirit of the "failing is ok" theme.
Pretty sure it was left ambiguous

Were it not for nostalgia of old monsters, GX would definitely be my favorite. I’m a huge fan of tcgs that push Tribal synergies and I remember being so hyped for gx that when I seen Jaden used elemental hero deck (with no support in TCG at that moment) I built this Uber jank Elemental deck based around element saurus and the other monsters in the archetype.
Watching the video as I type. Bastion was def one of my favs and I wish we’d get his fire dragon archetype. Love the video. Stay safe!
I searched for this channel so long since I watched this the first time. I have no idea why I couldn't find it.

I'm not even in the Yugioh fandom so I'm not sure how I got here, but somehow, this is the exact type of content I crave.
Same
"I am very shy and very nervous doing this, please be nice to me." Karina is precious all I gotta say. Also love your work on drawfee.
I love hearing someone talk about their favourite things, I'm glad these are back up.
On release many people didn't like it from my experience but later as it grew people respected it
And it’s weird that bastion was thrown away, but I guess after they got rid of chummley and brought in hassleberry someone had to be ignored.
If anyone wants the translation of the letter left by Jaden's friends then here it is
Sirus:Jaden you left without telling me.
Chazz :come any time and let's duel .
Hasselberry :don't you forget me.
Blair/clair: it's me Jaden.
Alexis: LET'S MEET AGAIN SOMEWHERE, OK ? (and on the letter she is blushing really hard as you can see. )
Addicas : I'LL LEAVE ALEXIS TO YOU JADEN.
And someone (I don't know said: move forward Jaden
Thanks so much for translating!
THEY BACK
Please don't get depressed again you make us all depressed
YES THE VIDEOS ARE BACK
Somehow, this ended up in my recommended, and I'm glad it did.

There's something beautiful about your analysis, really enjoyed this vid
I was introduced to GX through Duel Links, and I watched the first episode a couple of years ago, right after watching Duel Monsters... and dropped it. I really enjoyed Chronos/Crowler, and some of the themes, but I did not care much for superheros replacing mythical beasts or Yugi/Atem's confident passion replaced with a boyish giddyness. But I remembered from Duel Links a really cool fellow that focused on statistics and formulas, turned out that this was Bastion/Misawa
About a month or so ago, I did decide to watch GX in full and I really fell for the idea of Bastion's character but did not care how it turned out.
