I'm one of those weird people that has lived in GR my whole life, but am fascinated by what people in other parts of the nation think of the place! As a kid in the 80s, we used to stare at cars with out of state plates like it was from mars, wondering if this poor person got lost. Now, I drive around and can see them from all of the country! It's cool to see that we have arrived on people's radar!

I love seeing my hometown represented this way. I love living in Grand Rapids. The cold weather is one of my favorite parts of living here. I especially love how the NW side is getting better. Bridge street has become one of busiest places at night. Thank you for highlighting GR like this!

Hey Amber, I am so sorry for doing this...but you're very cute. I'm fairly new to Michigan, moving here from Indiana in July 2021. Currently going to school and starting a new life and everything. I'm thinking of moving to GR after I'm done, thus the reason I'm watching this video. This wasn't on my list of things to do today, trust me. I just felt compelled for some reason. Feel free to just completely ignore me. I'd understand. But if by some miracle you want to DM me, go ahead. I apologize again. If I never hear from you, point taken and I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Watching from Eugene, Oregon. GR has been a location I’ve been interested in moving our family to for years. I’m finally coming out for a visit this weekend to see if it’s as great as you guys make it sound. My biggest concerns are crime rates (we don’t feel safe in our current city), weather conditions especially with it being about as gloomy as where we are now, and of course the housing market! We have been priced out of Oregon and it’s heartbreaking but GR appears to still have decent housing for relatively affordable housing while still having access to beautiful nature!

Born and Raised in Grand Rapids! Went to Harrison Park Elementary… finally moved to Indianapolis the summer before starting 6th grade and originally hated it, but, grew to love this place… I am still very proud of my City , but a lot of my family split up and moved away and everyone’s doing their own thing so it doesn’t feel the same when I come back…. But I have soooooo many memories from Grand Rapids and being from MICHIGAN is the highlight of my life…& I’m proud to say that!
If you have questions of moving to GR…. Absolutely 100% recommend it.. of course, do a deep dive into areas and see what fits you best. 👌

Found the video because hubby and I are researching for a move to Grand Rapids in the next 1.5 years. The cold weather is the biggest thing I’m worried about. We’re both born and raised in NC, so we don’t know what a real winter is! 😂

You’ll learn quickly! Lol. Kind of joking, kind of not. We have gotten a lot of snow already this year (pretty much all this past weekend) but it was 50 degrees today and a lot of it melted. Grand Rapids is a great city! Also generally, the winters have been more mild in recent times I think

I enjoyed this video. I usually hear about west Michigan being beer city but GR has SO much to offer. Everything you guys mentioned are all things I missed when I lived down south in GA. My family just relocated back to the city from Plainwell and I'm so excited to be back, so close to everything and everyone!

GR is not a walkable downtown. Downtown GR is divided by two eyesore above ground freeways. New developments in GR remind of suburban properties with spaced out buildings surrounded by large surface parking lots. The city is a 5 out of 10 at best

I live in Colorado now, but grew up in GR and visited this past summer. I went downtown and enjoyed walking around, both sides of the river. I have no idea why you say it's unwalkable. Since I live at nearly 6000' above sea level, I had no problem walking up the hills in downtown, but maybe that is a challenge for you.

Good videos guys, funny you mentioned San Diego, I was born and raised in GR moved out to SD 3 years ago. Watching videos on UA-cam now haha just GR nastalgia.
SD is an EXTREMELY nice place to be though, I ain't complaining 🤙. But GR is a great place to raise a family id say.
Only correction id make to keep it honest is, people are nice and friendly, but they aren't as warm and outgoing as say people from warmer climates (down south or SoCal) GR is a bit more introverted of a city. I know cuz moving to Cali took me a while to shift cultures of like whoa people are super open to talking and hanging out with strangers here. It's not like that as much back in GR
But don't be mistaken GR is a great place to be

I take the bus a lot and have been doing so for years. You can't get everywhere you want on the bus. Quite a few places are off the bus line and you have to take other transportation to get there. And there are options for seniors and disabled. Quite often we get left out .

The #1 reason we are moving to the area is: You guys have a lot of WATER with the Great Lakes, and as some know, this area is running out of water with no solution but to relocate. Besides, it looks like a really nice place to live with a lot to offer.

GR is a unique city. A happy medium between big city/small town. Great diversity in the communities, like a bit of Chicago, yet much easier getting around...and out!
I love watching the GR city council meetings. Heated at times, and rightfully so, some extremely serious issues at hand.
But the people have a voice. Not as much as they want, but I travel the entire country,
and Grand Rapids is in really good shape by comparison. Respectfully, some of the fighting GR residents may not be aware, or have not traveled and seen some of the imploding cities across this nation. GR is a blessing by comparison. But never relent. The people's voice is paramount, and will definitely keep GR a place for ALL the folks.
With affordable housing being a huge battle, their voice is crucial in making GR affordable for everyone. Especially young underemployed parents. I just hate to see children lacking and suffering.
Otherwise, what a treat! Recreation, entertainment and dining is tough to beat in GR. We poorer folk tend to share disdain for the filthy rich. I take a different approach. Work, patronize, frequent these wonderful establishments that this great wealth has brought to the city. It's fascinating to see how the wealthy dollar can build a city for all to enjoy. So, enjoy it!
And the police are under strict public scrutiny, which all police in this country should be. But GRPD isn't ruined yet. They are still at a balance where a tone has been set for proactive policing. Even with the policing issues existing, it's awesome to still see good officer presence and aggressive proactive patrols. I have been in cities recently, LA metro, Portland, Seattle,
East coast municipalities, and Police appear to have given up. The locals say police will not respond, and quibble over jurisdictional responsibilities/boundaries to avoid response. LA metro area (Stanton, Westminster, Garden Grove or even Long Beach!!) for instance, group drug use open plain view plain sight, sometimes unable to enter an establishment of your choosing. I almost cry seeing what some cities have turned into. Because it was my dream to visit them growing up. Now this.
So, again, I love watching the GR city council meetings online, standing behind my brothers and sisters Constitutional Right to redress their government, and they do it well. But looking at the City through positive eyes, Grand Rapids is pretty hard to beat.
