    What questions or comments do you have about the Neoclassical art period?

      It's sort of a sideways question. I'm really interested in this Winckelmann character and if there are differences between art historians and art critics. Did the two jobs start as one and split? Are they still the same? Is there a pantheon of art historians and critics who are major players in developing the art history canon? Is there an art history canon?
      Thank you for making my lunch breaks so educational!

      Angelina, glad you enjoy the videos! These are some great questions.
      Although there is certainly some overlap, art historians generally are looking at the context and meaning around art pieces, movements, and periods whereas critics are strictly analyzing whether one piece is good or not. For example, Winckelmann was studying ancient Roman and Greek art in historical context and finding meaning that was applied to Neoclassicism. I'm sure he acted as a "critic" at times in deciding what made that art good, but he was doing so in a more historical context.
      Here's a good article on famous art historians: blog.academyart.edu/7-famous-art-historians-who-changed-the-field/
      Some of these historians are also considered critics.
      In regards to art history canon, there doesn't seem to be a well established canon. Generally historians will agree on important literature within art history, and art history books often have the same important artworks related to movements or periods. But there is not a well-defined art history canon. Literature and important artworks will differ quite a bit depending on who you talk to within art history.
      Hope this helps!

    is the painting Helen Recognizing Telemachus by Jean-Jacques Lagrenée also neoclassical art?

    • @ArtHistorywithAlder
      @ArtHistorywithAlder  3 роки тому

      Yes! It was painted during the height of Neoclassicism. The subject matter, the tight/clean brushstrokes, and the colors make it very much Neoclasical.

      @@ArtHistorywithAlder thank you for the quick response, you seriously made me happy. The painting is based on the odyssey, could this also be a characteristic that I can use to motivate my answer to the question “what style does it belong to, how can you tell and name the features of the particular style that caused you to come to your decision”

    • @ArtHistorywithAlder
      @ArtHistorywithAlder  3 роки тому

      @@user-nn5rp7jw2h yes, not specifically because of the Odyssey story itself, but because the Odyssey is a part of Greek myth and culture. Neoclassists returned to these Greek and Roman morals and ideas, so they often used or portrayed their stories in art.
