- Get a clear picture of what Ancient Egyptian art history is all about and its characteristics. From tombs, to reliefs, and more, the art from Ancient Egypt tells an incredible story of religion, kings, and an advanced society.
In this video, I cover the main characteristics and themes within the five main periods of Ancient Egyptian art history, along with analysis of famous artworks (often taught in art history classes) from each of these periods:
1. Pre-Dynastic - Palette of Narmer
2. Old Kingdom - Statue of Kafre Enthroned and The Seated Scribe
3. Middle Kingdom - Statue of Senusret III
4. New Kingdom - Statue of Akhenaten
5. Late Period and beyond - Mummy Egyptian portraits

What is your favorite time period, artwork, or pharaoh from Ancient Egyptian Art?!
Objectively speaking, the greatest piece of ancient Egyptian art is, WITHOUT QUESTION, the Block Statue of Senmut with Princess Nefrua. Nothing before and nothing after has even come close to matching its beauty and majesty. 😉
Actual serious answer though - I think for me it’s gotta be the Funerary Temple of Hatshepsut. It is such an incredible and monumental structure. The skill and precision required is remarkable as they cut the temple out of the mountain. I hope that I can someday see it with my own eyes.
haha I miss you in my classes!
But yes seriously, the Funerary Temple of Hatshepsut is incredible. Thanks for sharing, and you'll have to share with me when you make it there in person
Favorite time period: 6000-2000 BC (Actually I love every period of ancient Egypt, from 6000 BC to 40 AD!)
Favorite artwork: blue broad collar of Hapiankhtifi
Favorite pharaohs: Unas, Narmer, Radjedef, Nebra, Neithhotep.
I couldn’t possibly identify a single piece of Egyptian art as a personal favorite. From the smallest amulet depicting a god or goddess to the largest architectural wonder, each piece is remarkable in its own way.
My favorite period is the New Kingdom period. Favorite pharaohs are Ramses II and Hatshepsut. The architectural marvels built under the rule of these two leaders are truly incredible.
Thank you. I never had the money or opportunity for a higher education. Now I'm 60 and have the time to learn new things. Thank you for sharing your knowledge so freely.
Study well

Egyptian art isn't my favourite in the way it looks, but it really calls to me for some reason. My favourite ancient civilisation.
Also a question: Will you be making a video on surrealism art form like Picasso or Salvador Dali?
Ancient Egypt really is so fascinating and incredible.
And yes, I plan to dive into some Surrealism! Thanks for the suggestion.
@@ArtHistorywithAlder Shrouded in mystery, it is! ...I suppose Surrealism reciprocates that
Thank you very much. Small correction: Akhenaten's capital was called Akhetaten or Akhetaton, meaning "the horizon of the Aten".
Can I use your Egyptian art for my work. I need to explain how there art communicated stories in 100 words.
I think it's fair to say that the Egyptians succeeded in immortalising their ideal. That Kafre statue would be considered a handsome guy today, if you look at the facial features. Usually ideals of beauty change over time, and from culture to culture, but I think the western, modern ideal for male beauty is hauntingly suggestive of the ancient Egyptian one.
My brother's and sister's we can't let Egypt steal African culture 🧫 we have to educate this generation of black students 💯 true facts
Please do inidian art
The history of ancient Egyptian art really didn't "conclude" with Alexander's conquest. Traditional ancient Egyptian art and architecture continued to evolve and flourish under the Ptolemies and, to some extent, under the Romans. Also Akhenaten's new capital was called Akhetaten, not Akhenaten. He did not name it after himself. He also didn't change the name of any god. Aten was an existing god before Akhenaten took over.
One part I disagree with. It is wrong to call Mummy Portrait arts to be Christian Influenced. It was predominantly Roman art, influence coming from Pagan Roman arts with many pagan Egyptian influences. The concept of Christian art didn't start until the end of the 2nd century CE, and these portraits are older than that period. In fact, these portraits later influenced the Christian arts, especially the wood panel paintings of St Catherine monastery of Sinai, Egypt.
Interesting to note that the agreed mathematical figure proportion is of a tropical African type. Clear indication of indigenous adaptation and genetic chronology with Nile River and Saharan African
The weapon on the pallet, he’s wielding is a mace head, used across many indigenous African cultures to symbolise strength and authority. It’s a bludgeoning tool not an axe for decapitation.
Also there is nothing thin about the depiction of the note of Menya (Mena, Menes, Narmer)
