      “The best build I could come up with against what I consider the meta” fixed. Ever consider that Ursarctics might be a bit too technical for the average casual to pick up and play? Doesn’t mean they are bad, just means you might be too inexperienced. It’s only a true loss if you give up.

    Buddy of mine made the point that while MBTs argument was right about the idea about Edison not being figured out for years, we live in a era where information and statistics about the best decks in WAY more reachable instead of being secret to just the top players. Like in Edison we were still looking up rulings through the wiki and fucking poyo. Now we have YGOpro and THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE GAME AS YUGITUBERS. The fact that Jesse Kotton, Joshua, and Pak who are top players will consistently give insight, advice, and the right logic required to play decks optimally. Back then we had to rewatch ARG replays of Billy Brake or ProWinston Videos just to get an idea of how pros thought and played

    One-tricking psi-frame has unironically been very interesting; even with gamma limited, cards like Hop Ear Squadron and Baldrake synergize super well with the archetype, letting you keep your driver unbanished, or even making omega or accel stardust on your opponent's going 1st turn. optimizing deck comp so you both get the field spell and as many psi-frames in hand as possible along with enough materials for lambda is super sick.

    • @StainlessKay
      @StainlessKay 9 місяців тому +1

      I'd be very curious to learn of your secrets. I was considering some bizarre combo of ghoti and psy frame, cuz I already use a hop ear squadron package in my ghoti deck, and it is pretty nuts to get the synchro plays out on their turn whilst also getting the negates of psy frame cards. I don't really think the two strategies can synergize perfectly together (you can only have so many ghoti central cards and only have so many psy frame cards to play either of the strategies well, and opening only half of both strategies doesn't do anything lol), but I was just thinking there were some similar gameplay plans between the two archetypes, of disrupting your opponent by playing monsters on their turn that also have powerful disruption options available. What's your deck composition looking for your psy frame decks? What do you do if going first?

    • @Eddiegames9
      @Eddiegames9 9 місяців тому

      @@StainlessKay going first is the best case because then you can setup stuff like branded regained or the field spell.
      package i'm running is Bystials, Magicians' Souls, and PUNK engine.
      punks make omega, give an extra material, and put a light in gy. use the spare ze amin with a bystial or souls to make lambda, then banish with omega to search gamma/epsilon in the end phase.
      baldrake, hop ear, and any psy-frame work best on opponent's turn.
      secret card to make the deck stronger is Pinpoint Landing, combos well with souls and the rest of the deck.
      the deck is specifically built to be consistently effective regardless of going first or second, but falls short in matchups where the opponent has a really high number of activations due to the gamma limit.
      the horus cards and deep draw engines can be used to create a potentially ludicrously strong going first boardstate, but imo in terms of consistency, its not the best. (and more importantly, it's not very interesting to play)
      I've used toon table of contents > toon masked sorcerer > chaos space > lubellion in past builds, but for maximizing consistency of actionable hands going 2nd, it's sub par.
      ghost ogre covers the deck's natural weaknesses pretty well, up to you how much you use. don't use ash/imperm, more psi-frames in hand is better.
      1 copy of accelerator to pitch off souls, or use to out continuous cards is decent, dont run more.
      2 driver is a good amount imo.

    I definitely feel how the “bad deck” mentality shapes the metas around you and in larger tournaments. I’ve been playing Bird Up, and it’s definitely not a bad deck. It plays around/through nib and other disruptions, it has follow up, it can break boards with Zeus and such, it doesn’t play into Bystials, and siding against combo decks is pretty good. However, decks that center more around destroying cards, or have better grind games can either clear the birds or out grind it, and decks like Unchained, like Labyrinth happen to be more prevalent at the larger tournament scene. But decks like Purrley, like Tear which are decks better suited for the current tournament meta, would have a harder time against it.

    "Focus one deck" I feel that. Not that I'm a great player or even get to do much in the way of locals. It's mostly just me and two friends who like keeping up with modern games and play our weird ideas from time to time. But Fur Hire got me back in the game and I've played every variant of that deck since coming back. I'm probably the last person to not add spright into the Runick fur hire that did well in tournaments a few months back. My friends play a lot more grind than disruption, and I liked having seal and filo over the absolute gas of more spright. Board wipes mean nothing to me when I've got so many ways to use the fur hire engine to spam out huge board presence / control

    As someone who's main competitive game is Super Smash Bros.
    Yeah no sh*t you don't know what is good. Smash ultimate has 82 fighters (not counting echos, some of which should probably be counted and some of which shouldn't) and after 5 years there's still people surprising by winning with characters that were considered out of meta contention for years. Melee still has occasional minor shifts in the meta and that game has 26 characters and has been out for over 20 years.
    Yugioh keeps getting new cards and has hundreds if not thousands of legit decks you can play. I don't think there's any way you could fully figure out what's good in a format even if no banlists or new cards release in a year. And with the constant additions and changes I don't think it's realistically possible to ever have a good grasp on what the game would look like if the meta got the chance to fully develop. If we spend like 10 years only playing late 2022 TCG format I would not be surprised if it turns out tierlaments is just alright compared to the real meta treat of ojama ftk.

    When I started getting into competitive Warhammer my testing team once told me that I shouldn't switch to T'au (the best army at that point in time) because I won't win a major being the third best at the best (referring to the best army). So I submitted a pretty decent, albeit gimmicky Ork list and I went 4-1 and getting fourth place due to tiebreakers. I vastly outperformed for my first ever major tournament, mainly because I was familiar with how my army plays and how people THINK my army plays.
    I always think that in a tournament setting factors like comfort to play, adaptability, familiarity with rogue and meta match-ups and fun are key. If you play a Deck that you aren't enjoying it is mentally taxing and you will make a costly mistake at some point.

    I play thunder dragon and have ONLY played thunder dragon since 2019 after dropping dragon link. I know my deck is not a top deck anymore and it may never be one ever again, but I can say confidently that I know my deck inside out and virtually any line that could happen. It lead to my first regional top earlier this year and I continue to perform well at local tournaments regardless of how shitty my side deck is. I have not met a single person that knows more about my deck than I do. My solution to the problems I face in the meta game is to basically adopt a new engine into it. At first I played pure, then chaos control, then a lot of combo variations, PUNK Thundra, DPE Thundra control, Bystial Thundra, and now Thundra Handloop. A lot of times my deck has an inherently good matchup against some of the good decks because of how differently it plays compared to other decks and I use that to my advantage. This format has been a bit rough, but because it’s more of a grind game format: If I can get 2-3 hand rips and my Thundra fusion in rotation, there is almost no deck that can out grind me. You can recur your Thundra fusion infinitely by searching the correct thunder monster. And if you choose to use 2 chaos creator you can actually have a constant loop of chaos creator every turn. Not to mention Titan doesn’t care if fire king tries to pop it since it can banish 2 to save itself. I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving this deck, and I will only ever get better with it. (Also learning a new engine is way easier than learning an entire deck… just saying)

We've actually had this quite a bit in our relatively short run so far, with metas that tend to shift week by week to sometimes day by day within any of our 3 formats so far. People have gone into locals with cards that were borderline broken in the OCG only to learm that the actual meta of that point couldn't care less about them. Meanwhile decks that looked super weak turned out to be incredible once piloted at regional opens, the king of that being red terrasaurs, a deck that turned out to be so broken they needed to ban a vanilla to kill it. We just had blue introduced and while everyone was playing it for deck destruction, its since turned out in regionals that it was actually fantastic against dominant aggro decks as a midrange floodgate style.

    I usually bounce around decks every month, though my pet deck is - and always will be - Magikey. It's not a good deck, it's full of bricks because it's both a Ritual Deck and a deck centered around Normal Monsters. I've tried more than 10 archetypes and nowadays I'm sticking up with Magikey Libromancer, while recognizing Magikey Bystial as "the superior deck" and Magikey Impcantation as "the most optimal deck". I still want to learn more about the deck and I'll be forever studying and optimizing it, though it's the one deck I want to make it work and feels good to play, as well as being good enough to snatch some wins.

      For Tear, Bystials and Dim Shifter should help.
      Assuming a 40 card VS deck, I believe it is about 17% chance you see Shifter in the opener.
      The Bystials (1 Mag, 3 Druis), copies of Bal and Saro are optional. Druiswurm also hits Unchained really hard.
      You can also make Abyss Dweller in VS to stop them on their turn when you go first.

    I don't quite agree with the notion that there are no good decks, or that the only way that people know a deck is "good" is if it tops rcs or ycs, which I find relatively silly. The way people find out that a deck is good is by observation, seeing how many people are playing a certain deck like, say, Kashtira and all of its variants, a deck that, unless you're prepared for it, is kind of a pain in the neck to play against because it's an archetype based around very hard removal in face-down banishing, lock-down and having the ability to regain resources with relative ease.
    Personally, I would call that a massive pain in the ass and the Visas line should be thrown into Mount Doom with The One Ring and Nickelback, the fact remains that it's a good deck, it's designed to be easy to play and hard to deal with, the other side of this coin would be like saying that pure Venom is a good deck, a deck that has no recursion, has no way to get their bigger cards out outside of their boss cards, also their mechanic fails completely and utterly if you get rid of their field spell, the only way those stupid venom counters could do something outside of venom burn, and I should know, I played the deck, it hurt to play....back in the GX era.
    Personally, I wouldn't call a meta a "social construct" because metas are ever changing beasts, what might be meta defining one year could be rocked and tossed aside the next, nothing in a meta is set in stone, unless he just means "a meta" is a social construct which is true, but the meta is usually boiled down to following the path of least resistance, usually in choosing the strongest/most optimal option to win, which I think is something that MBT either forgets or chooses to ignore, there's a reason Lab and Rescue Ace or Kashtira decks are played and why stuff like pure venom isn't.

    Im super into dragunity due to nostalgia and after the new support that its been getting both in and out of archetype i think it genuinely has a decent ability to establish good boards and play through certain interactions, as well as some interesting going second tech. Its weaknesses are some kind of defined chokepoints especially on normal dux/legatus or with dragon ravine, and it doesnt do too much that other combo pile decks can pull off. Overall tho i think it could compete in an event and do decently given enough testing, innovation, and time. It already has had some occasional surprise success in some smaller events.
