My favorite errata hands down has to be the first errata of Hundred Eyes Dragon, where they had to remove the hyphen from it's name (Hundred-Eyes Dragon) so that it wouldn't be considered a part of the "Red-Eyes" archetype.

It was never ban worthy. I played during that era, it was backrow heavy, Goyo didn't last long enough to do anything with the monster it stole, if it even could. Stat line? You mean in the same meta sporting free special summon Blue Eyes with the ability to wipe the board (judgment dragon) and use priority to do it? Goyo was a two card summon that needed to battle to get it's underwhelming effect. Oh, and Goyo has less attack then said destroyer of games. No, it was not a problem at all. It was just at a time Konami was scared shitless of generic cards in every deck... and then they did a 180 and today half of decks are generic. Great company, much consistency.

@PathBeyondTheDark Goyo was obscenely easy to go into even back then, there's a reason everyone and their dog ran the thing. Besides, they didn't even ban it for most of the 5ds era, it was just limited

Here's a fun trivia: There's a rule in Yugioh that says you must wait for an effect to finish resolving before you check for victory conditions. Its why if you draw the last piece of Exodia with Dark World Dealings, you must discard first before instantly winning.
They changed this rule exclusively for LP, right before releasing the RoR errata, because even that errata wouldn't prevent draws, as you would have to wait until your opponent took the damage and the card finishes resolving before checking if someone won or lost. It also meant that Berserker Soul, which was released prior to this, could no longer cause damage even after reducing the opponent's LP to 0 and was no longer able to replicate the iconic anime scene.

I'll never forgive them for what they did to Dark Magician of Chaos. Now instead of getting the Spell back immediately, you get it back at the end of your turn, if it remains on the field until that point(also it's a HOPT which is annoying but not surprising). So you don't even get to use that spell until your next turn, and you're left with a piece of your end board that does nothing to disrupt your opponent. I guess in fringe cases, you could use it to recur a Runick spell if you still control Fountain.
In addition, and this one gets overlooked, but DMOC's ability to banish any monster it destroys by battle is now a Trigger effect instead of a Continuous effect, so now it can be disrupted by effects that negate monster effects.

The thing with Rampart Blaster is, that in the OCG, it has always meant that, if there was an opening for a direct attack, you could hit with him being in defense, but for us it was described as being able to poke directly if it is in defense, as if that was the condition, no matter the amount of monsters on the field. Rampart Blaster is a really interesting case because in the anime it could attack through monsters, but when they printed it Konami ruled that it couldn't, whereas Upper Deck ruled that it could, so it was banned from Worlds. Then to try to avoid this problem when the card was reprinted in the TCG they added errata text to it to make it fit the Japanese ruling, only for the Japanese ruling to change to say it COULD attack directly in 2015, meaning they had to reprint it AGAIN in the TCG to fit the original TCG form of the card... which was now the correct Japanese ruling. Okay, so here's the deal.
Rampart Blaster was originally used in the anime to attack directly through monsters. When the card was printed, however, for some unknown reason, Konami decided to rule in the OCG that it couldn't attack if monsters were present. Meanwhile, Upper Deck ruled that it COULD attack directly through monsters in the TCG. This led to confusion that made the card get banned for Worlds, because it was ruled differently in two places. What happened afterwards was several years of chaos. The TCG reprinted the card in 2011 and changed the text to fit the Japanese ruling - that it couldn't attack through monsters. But ironically, in 2015, the Japanese ruling changed and it was allowed to attack through monsters again - and it'd never been errata'd or reprinted in Japan, so it was like they'd just made it fit what its text should have been doing the whole time. So the TCG had to go and get rid of the errata they went out of their way to add to the card just to line up with the Japanese ruling at the time. It's very silly.

It’s weird when you compare the restrictions on Eratta’d Goyo with Nat Beast.
Like, they obviously knew that Beast was way too strong to be generic while they were making it, and knew restricting it to only earth materials would drastically limit it’s playability.
But then they thought that Goyo was almost equivalent in power to deserve a similar restriction???
Really??? They thought Naturia Beast’s effect of “mill powered Imperial Order” was on par with Goyo Gaurdian’s effect of “battle dependent monster reborn”?

      mill powered _one-sided_ Imperial Order
While I agree the erratum is a bit harsh, you have to admit that it's weird that the generic Level 6 Synchro with the highest ATK stat (which dwarved and still outclasses most higher Level Synchros) not only had an effect at all but had an effect that could decide games on its own back then.

Come to think of it, Beast was not nearly as powerful back then as it is today.
The game was slower and most removal came in form of traps instead of spells while spell cards (combo enablers as well as others) weren't nearly as impactful as they are today, so usually you'd actually prefer Barkion over Beast.
Goyo Guardian's effect is an immediate plus one (two if you count the destruction by battle as part of it) unlike Beast's mill which had to hit the right cards which were also rarer back then, so Goyo Guardian might actually have been the better card for quite a while.
At least that's how it was during the Synchro era. I don't know what things were like when Goyo Guardian was erratad.

    Idea for future archetype: E-Rata
E-Rata's are an archetype themed around cards that have been on the ban list that received an errata, their artwork depicts the Errata'd cards in a worn down almost pathetic state while their effects revolve around banishment (homage to them being banned).
    Ex:
Chaos E-Rata Dragon, Envoy of the End
    Dragon/Effect
    Lvl8 Dark
Effect: Must first be special summoned by banishing 2 "E-Rata" monsters from your GY.
Pay 1000 LPs, banish all cards on the field and in both players hands (cards on the field are banished face up, while cards in hand are banished face-down) inflict damage to your opponent equal to the number of cards banished by this effect x100. During your opponent's Stand by phase add cards that were banished face down by this effect back to their owner's hands and send face up banished cards from either player to the GY, up to the number of banished "E-Rata" cards.
    Goyo E-Rata Guardian
    Synchro/Warrior
    lvl6 Earth
    1 Tuner + 1 Non tuner
If this card was synchro summoned using an "E-Rata" monster as material it gains the following effect
-If this card destroys a monster in battle you can banish that monster, then during the End Phase special summon that monster to your side of the field in defense position, it's effects are negated and it is treated as an "E-Rata" monster as well as a tuner.
During the end phase, banish this card and return the materials used for its Synchro summon to the field, but their effects are negated and they cannot be used as material for a summon except for a "E-Rata" monster or be tributed except for the tribute summon of an "E-Rata" monster.
    Ring of E-Rata-struction
    Trap
Effect: Destroy 1 monster on the field and banish it. During the End phase both players lose LP equal to the banished monster's ATK. If the monster banished was an "E-Rata" you gain LPs equal to its atk instead while your opponent takes damage.
This card is banished instead of going to the GY.
    Imperial E-Rata
    Continuous Trap
pay 700LPs each players Stand by phase, if you cannot pay, you take 700 points of damage instead, if you control a face up "E-Rata" monster you do not have to pay LPs during your turn and if you cannot, you can instead inflict 700 points of damage to your opponent instead.
Negate the effects of all spell cards on the field, except E-Rata spell cards.
If this card is destroyed, banish it.
    Brain E-Rata
    Spell
Effect: pay 800LPs target a non-"E-Rata" monster on your opponent's side of the field and take control of it. if you control an "E-Rata" monster you can take control of another card. If the cards are effect monsters, their effects become: "This card is treated as an "E-Rata" card, if it leaves the field or would be sent to the GY it is banished face-down instead.".
    Sinister Erata Serpent
    Reptile
    lvl 1 WATER
Effect: if you control an "E-Rata" card while this card is banished. add this card back to your hand.
If this card is banished by an "E-Rata" effect you can add to your hand E-Rata cards that are banished up to the number of Sinister E-Rata Serpents that are banished.
    E-Rata Card Virus
    Trap
Tribute 1 E-Rata monster, negate the effects of all monsters in both players hands, except E-Rata monsters. Until the 3rd stand by phase after this card's activation any cards your opponent draws must be revealed and then banished face down unless it is an E-rata card. The effects of all monsters on your opponents side of the field become "This card is treated as an "E-Rata" monster and cannot be used as material for a summon, except for an "E-Rata" monster"
    Exchange of E-Rata spirits
    Trap
if you have exactly 10 "E-Rata" cards banished face up; pay 500LP for each "E-Rata" monster banished. you and your opponent can send cards to the GY up the total number of banished cards from both players, card effects cannot be activated in the GY the turn this is activated, except E-Rata monsters. all cards that are banished are returned to the deck and shuffled.
    Future E-Rata
    Continuous Spell
Effect: Reveal 1 E-Rata monster in your extra deck and banish the required materials from it face up.
During your opponent's Main Phase, if they activated a card or effect or special summoned from the extra deck, you can special summon the revealed monster from your extra deck(this summon is treated as that cards required summoning method), if summoned this way it cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects, but it is banished during the End Phase and the monsters banished by this card's effect are sent to the GY.

Lower stats make his effect less useful and his effect already comes with a reasonable downside (negating those monsters' effects on top of it doesn't really matter since even in 2012 you often just used the stolen monsters as material).

  • @lo4tr
    @lo4tr Рік тому

The thing is, most of the overcompensation is fixed by dialing back a little on the restrictions.
For Ring, all you need to keep it from being super toxic is the restriction that it can't be used to inflict more damage than your opponent has LP. It being a trap alone causes you to need setup, and the mutual burn means it could be worse for you in a gamestate where decks seek to kill you in a single turn. With a lot of monsters having inherent protection, from targeting and/or destruction, it means Ring already has inbuilt ways to limit its use.
CED could stand to simply be unable to use its effect during the same turn it was summoned, rather than restricting you from using any other types of effects. I'd personally try to errata it first by saying you can't use it in the same turn you special summon it by its own effect, meaning if you cheat it out you still can, but that might be a little too toxic. If so, just making sure it can't nuke everything during the turn it was summoned by any means seems fine.
Crush... this is actually a weird one to me. If you don't restrict it enough, it becomes a mess of things, but the idea of placing so many restrictions on it but also changing the effect to one where the opponent gets to freely benefit is wrong. To me, keep the added restrictions, but keep the idea of simply negging any monster with 1500+ ATK your opponent draws. I do think that the GY at this point is nearly as dangerous a place to have the monsters anyway and the prolific amount of spell/trap cards that just grab them back anyway makes even the OG Crush Card hard to use. So, if we keep the restrictions, cards shouldn't be sent to the GY and instead should be banished or shuffled back into the deck. Either that, or just keep the OG Crush.
    So, my changes:
Ring: Target 1 Monster on the Field: Destroy that Monster and, if you do, inflict damage to both Player's LP equal to that Monster's original ATK. You cannot target a Monster with an original ATK equal to or greater than your opponent's current LP.
CED: Cannot be Norma Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your Hand) by Banishing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK Monster from your GY. Once per turn: You can pay 1000 LP; Send as many cards as possible from the field and both Players' hands to the GY and, then, inflict 300 damage to your opponent's LP for each card sent to their GY this way. You cannot use this effect during the same turn you Summon this card.
Crush: Tribute 1 DARK Monster you control with 1000 or less ATK; Look at your opponent's Hand, all Monsters they control and, during their next 2 Draw Phases, all cards they Draw, and Banish all Monsters among those cards that have 1500 or more ATK. Your opponent takes no damage, by battle or effect, until your next Standby Phase. You cannot activate this card during a turn in which your opponent has taken damage.

For emperor dragon, I wonder if it'd be fine if they changed the effect condition to just restrict graveyard effects instead? Idk, I haven't really played with/against chaos lately, so I'm not sure how much that'd actually matter.

No even then something like the Yata lock would still be possible. Hand ripping is usually broken. Board nukes are usually good. Old Emperor Dragon did BOTH.

Here's one nobody ever talks about with erratas:I used to play evos back in the day after they were competitive. Evolsaur Terias used to get a beneficial eff of gained 500 atk putting it to 2900 and after the errata they made it so it loses 500 so it is a negative eff to do what the deck is designed to do. The only reason I could think they changed that is the xyz which are supposed to be the next evolution all would have had less than him. Idk now I just want to summon off of Elias instead

  • @snowboundwhale6860

I still remember the one time I lost a game because of CED's errata in MD, because I thought the activation lock was the only errata. Had enough to burn for lethal (like ~3000 at the time) by wiping both our hands and fields, then they took less than half the expected damage because they had like 3 cards and I'd had 7. I even had game if I hadn't used CED's effect I only activated it because I didn't spot the errata made it so the burn is only for your opponent's cards sent and I thought it'd be funny. I then proceeded to brick and get beaten to death for 3 turns by a 1900 beater they top-decked immediately.
I guess the change to only burning for the opponent's cards was done in response to the ftk setups, but because people seem to only acknowledge the restriction of preventing you from activating effects after using it I didn't even realise the burn was also changed.
    God I miss my boi
CED and CCV should've just stayed banned, Brain Control's a shame but at least several years went by between it's errata and Change of Heart being limited (though the errata should probably be reverted now).

Oh wow, I started playing Yugioh again after the Firewall errata so I'd always assumed Firewall was a soft once per turn and people were looping it somehow to do FTK bullshit and they needed to add a hard once per turn.
WTF Konami, you genuinely printed a card that said summon any monster from hand without even a SOFT once per turn?

    • @vgmaster02
      @vgmaster02 Рік тому +2

Yes. They did. And the worst part about that? THE ANIME DIDN'T EVEN USE THAT EFFECT MORE THAN ONCE A TURN IN ANY DUEL HE FEATURED IN. I went back through every single duel that Yusaku used Firewall Dragon in, and in every single one, he only used that special from hand effect once a turn. So the errata we now have for Firewall basically makes it just like it was used in the anime, yet for some reason, Konami decided to initially make the card GENERIC! In fact, the card was SO broken, that people literally broke the card in half within 24 hours of its REVEAL. Not its release in the OCG. Its initial REVEAL to the OCG.
And they honestly thought BANNING A-ASSAULT CORE was the fix to the problem that was the myriad of Firewall FTKs XDD

    • @TheForeverRanger
      @TheForeverRanger Рік тому +2

It took Firewall getting an upgraded form in the anime for it to get the hammer. Due to it being an "ace monster" they couldn't touch it. The card was toxic and because they couldn't ban it, other decks like ABC suffered collateral damage.

Another change that makes ring unplayable that wasn't mentioned in the video, New ring burn cares about Original attack instead of current attack as the old version did. What this means is if by some miracle a monster on the field matches exactly the opponents life points due to an effect it either kills them if it's a decreased attack or leaves them alive. Adding additional frustration to an already frustrating errata
