This was interesting to see as a local, and I learned a couple things too. Since you visited Ben's Chili Bowl, I just wanted to mention that the reason it's such a landmark is because it's the only surviving business of its era. U street used to be a hugely important cultural neighborhood (nicknamed "Black Broadway") but most of the surrounding establishments were destroyed in the riots and violence following MLK's assassination. Ben's couldn't have endured as a business if they didn't also serve good food, but its historical significance goes well beyond that.
@Theeximperfectionist That was one of the most fun things about visiting Ben's. The manager really knew the history and was really interesting to talk to. The food was great, but the coolest part was visiting somewhere with so much history.
Of all these great replies, yours is the one I will leave one with. As a dad, with children, you are 💯 correct. The video and sites are amazing, watching him spend the day with his dad was the BEST! Great comment 👍
Thanks for the tour! In 1968 on my 21st birthday my husband and I walked up the stairs in the Washington Monument. There was a cage type elevator and people could see the dedication stones, but we got to see them up close. Unfortunately, we had no camera with us on this adventure and we were totally exhausted by the time we got to the top. A lot of history has happened between then and now and no one is allowed on the stairs anymore. My husband was in the army and we lived in Arlington so we did have time to explore the Capital which was my childhood dream. Thanks again and what a beautiful sunset!
It was around that time that I also walked those steps as a young teenager who was part of a small church-sponsored group. That was a workout that I'll never forget and we were not lazy kids either! Good times.
The man who sculpted the Lincoln memorial was the grandfather of my first grade teacher which is why I remember his last name, French. Apparently he had deaf family. And it was Lincoln who signed the charter for the first and only college exclusively for deaf individuals, now Gallaudet University there in DC. So Abraham Lincolns hands are carve signing an A with one hand and an L with the other. So it was special to me in many ways since I’m a sign language interpreter. DC has so many amazing museums. I’ve been a few times and still hav3 not seen every museum. The holocaust museum is one I’ve been to twice. I went first after it first opened. Second time I went with someone who really wanted to see it too. I only got to see a smattering of the national gallery cuz it was getting ready to close by the time we got there. I’d love to go back one day.
I am a local here is my critique lol: The summers are really really stinking hot with lots of humidity so that's why there aren't as many tourists as you'd expect. I would suggest coming in the early Fall to see the beautiful foliage and the sometimes mild temperatures or the Spring when the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom. Founding Farmers is really good, especially the Sunday brunch buffet. It is also one of the best options near the Smithsonian's because the top rated food in the city isn't anywhere near that area. So it is great to go before the museums because it is the best in the area, but it is also very overrated. Another great option around the museums is the dining hall at the American Indian Museum. They serve authentic Native American dishes from each of the tribes from a menu prepared by a Native American chef. You are unlikely to find anything like this in most of the country and it is a very unique experience. Ben's Chili Bowl is a very important place. It was a Green Book destination for African American travelers looking for a restaurant that was friendly to black customers. It was also a center for social activism during the Civil Rights era. It is a destination to see for its history alone, however the food is not the best in the city. Their food is eclipsed by many many restaurants serving gourmet hot dogs with premium meats and toppings and gourmet hamburgers in the city. If you want really good food in the city go to the neighborhoods of Georgetown, The Wharf, or Shaw. Also scattered throughout the city you can try the various ethnic restaurants. DC is home to one of the most diverse food scenes in the world, with incredible restaurants from every cuisine. For a longer stay, I would also recommend venturing out to Falls Church to the Eden Center to eat some of the best Vietnamese food outside of Vietnam. You can get delicious Pho and Bahn Mi Sandwiches. Or to Annandale Virginia where there is the best Korean food in the country, where you can get very flavorful Dolsot Bibimbap or Bulgogi. The museums you toured are great. I would also suggest the Spy Museum which was just recently reopened in a new location. It is one of the most cutting edge museums in the world with state of the art displays. The Hirschhorn Museum also is free and has really cool, very large, and sometimes waaaay out there art installations and sculptures, To see their most spectacular limited timed entry events you sometimes need to get to the ticket stand when it opens in the morning or reserve weeks in advance.
I so admire and envy your relationship with your father. My father died of cancer when I was twelve, forty-five years ago. We had a wonderful relationship, cut short, and I have great memories that will last all of my life. As the person posted above, enjoy it while you can, and build the memories to last a lifetime.
The national Christmas tree died last year and was replaced after the first of the year. Impressive that they were able to plant such a large one. I've always wanted to visit DC but I follow a vlogger around who shows all the monuments as well as the chaos and noise, protests and constant motorcades!
Got to visit DC twice in my youth, loved the Smithsonian museums. Really want to take my son one of these days as I feel it's important for every American to visit at least once.
I'm impressed how much you both got through in a day. I was there recently for 4 days and still wasn't enough time to cover what we wanted to, but still got in plenty of stuff to see.
I lived and worked in the Washington DC for 30 years before retiring in October 2023. Nice to see my old stomping ground. The apartment building beside Ben's Chili is owned by the company I worked for. It is one of the 70 or so buildings they owned. Happily retired now in SC.
Thank you for making one heck of a video of my city you have so much more to see so if you ever come back by all means reach out for some other destinations to experience especially food. Your cinematography is on point by far one of the best videos i have watched. Someone mentioned thanks for not mentioning steaks so many folks go to the wrong spots. Anyway again fantastic video.
As someone who is really into history, and also love the promise of the ideals of our country, I really have always enjoyed D.C. a lot. I’ve been there about 5 times over the years, and will be back again this fall. I’ve done a tour of the White House in 2015. I think it’s definitely worth doing at least once. You just have to plan ahead, writing your congressman for the tickets, and then expecting going through a LOT of security. I thought it was pretty cool though, how thru had dogs behind a wall you walked by where you couldn’t see them, with a fan that blew your scent to them to detect threats like gunpowder or other things. I still always love the Lincoln Memorial. It’s simple in some ways, but grand and powerful. And as one of my two very favorite presidents, and someone who fought for equality, it has special meaning for me. As the museums go? It’s endless. One of the most powerful is the Holocaust museum. And I can imagine the Museum of African American History is too, which I plan to visit this fall, having just missed its opening by months in fall of 2015.
I love visiting D.C. I live about 60 miles away so I get to go there often. The Air and Space Museum is my favorite Smithsonian museum. Such a shame it was closed. I could spend weeks just walking the mall and visiting the sites and museums. A great place to visit is the National Archives. Thanks for showcasing Washington DC...a truly American treasure.
I currently live in the DC area & absolutely love it. I’ve toured the White House 4 different times & my favorite time was in December when all the trees are up & decorated. Another must do is the tour of the Pentagon inside & out. Good luck & safe travels
Another great overview of a great location. Thanks for these insightful videos. AS a teacher and as a veteran, I firmly believe every American should visit DC. I have been 5 times and have still NOT seen it all. At the top of my yet to see list are the National Gallery, so thanks for wetting my appetite, and the new WWI Memorial. And I am also adding a food stop for a little chili!
Hey great video!! DC is one of my fave places I’ve ever visited. I spent about 4 days here by myself just going around monuments and museums and I can’t wait to go back. The museum of African American History is a must-visit too!
Great video. I visited there in summer of '16. There is so much to see but I think you did an excellent job of pointing out the hi-lights. Your narration voice is very well done on all your videos. Kudos to you!! Love ALL your trips, as I know I will not be visiting these places again, but at least I can do it with YOU one more time! Thank you for what you do! Most appreciated!
Korean War Memorial is my favorite. Just beautiful. The National Gallery of Art is my favorite museum. George Mason Memorial is near the FDR and Jefferson
I’ve been to DC twice and want to go again after watching your video. There is so much to see and do and history and art are favorite interests of mine along with a mix of politics.
Great ideas for my trip in May 2023. I’ve been to the memorials with Wreaths Across America as a chaperone. Having a chance to visit each slowly will be awesome.
Next trip go to the National Arboretum, National Cathedral, the Aquatic Garden, Frederick Douglass House, the little park near Key Bridge, Arlington National cemetery, Rock Creek Park and the hundreds of interesting sites in and around DC.
Good job, very nice choices for a full day. I have traveled all over the US and in my opinion there isn't another region of the country that has as much diverse free activities for everyone. I have lived in the DC area for over 60 years and never have I been stymied at doing something new and different.
I love your videos on your trips your photography is great very sharp and very interesting and the places you go so much information just wanted you to know that your father is so cute to go with you I love your family going on these great trips with you.
This is very helpful for me because me and my school class are going to dc for a field trip and we are staying from June fifth to the nineth and you made my day showing all the cool things to look at so thank you for this I appreciate it

Another great travelogue! I'm guessing you walked about 8 or 9 miles. I've done the White House tour twice, and it is a wonderful experience. Standing in the East Room you could really feel history.
Awesome video Josh as usual, nice to see you with a genuine sponsor, I will try the coffee, give my regards to the always charming Princess Amy and stay safe, thanks!
19:03 Matthew 6:26 - Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Psalms 37:25 - I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
Riding the DC circulator bus is a great way to save time and money when touring DC monuments and museums. For longer trips, the Washington metro is a great time and money saver. Uber and cabs frequently get stuck in DC's notorious traffic. Whatever you do in DC, don't try to drive around the city. Traffic moves like turtles and parking costs a fortune If you can find it at all.
As a local , I say "well done". As for some areas not seeming like they have "a lot of people", you always have to remember how incredibly LARGE those spaces are. The Mall can accommodate a million people, it never looks full. 😄
My favorite Landmarks in Washington,D.C. is the “The White House,Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Building & Washington Monument” in this remarkable video 2023❤❤❤I visited Washington,D.C. two years ago to visits these remarkable places or Landmarks in 2023❤❤❤
I'm going to DC in April and last month I submitted my request to have a White House tour. I think my two kids would enjoy it. We haven't hard back from our representative yet but I hope we get tickets. Thanks for the cool video.
As I am visiting Washington DC in October your video was really helpful . We have a slot for the Capitol tour and try for the monument and I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for showing
I highly recommend a visit to Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier / occurs every 30 minutes, 24/7 - it is the top “must see” item in D.C.
Boy you guys really got lucky with the crowds it is usually way more busy than that especially in the summertime. I was fortunate enough to get into a White House Tour back in October and it was fairly uneventful didn't really get to see much but what you do get to see is nice. And also the Metro there is just a fantastic thing to use to get around I love that City I've been there about five times now and can't wait to go back. Would actually consider living in the area also.
Sitting proudly but he had Native American round up and relocate them and open the doors for North and South for the slaves , thanks for taking us on the trip nice and beautiful
Very nice video, nicely touching on the main tourist spots. I was curious why you missed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that is right next to the Lincoln Memorial.
When I was young, I walked up the stairs in the Washington Monument. My mom and sister waited for the elevator, and we met them at the top. Of course today, you can't walk up. We also toured the White House. Back then you just waited in line during open hours.
WOW! Thanks for telling us Ben's Chili Bowl can be ordered online!!!!!! P.S....how cool that you and your Dad drove the entire Route 66 !!! ......ROFL over your Dad being chased by dinosaurs !!!!!!!🤣
I couldn't help but notice your beautiful energy. bless you and your family
Pops is awesome! It's cool to see him get more into the video's lately.

As a parent, the best part of this video is that you call your dad “pops.” ❤
Of all these great replies, yours is the one I will leave one with. As a dad, with children, you are 💯 correct. The video and sites are amazing, watching him spend the day with his dad was the BEST! Great comment 👍
I enjoyed the palpable sense of respect and awe you had at The Lincoln Memorial and MLK. They're such amazing places. Great video.
Such amazing places and such amazing men, really enjoyed spending some time at both of those

This is right on time. I'm heading there at the end of October, and have been trying to figure out what to do.
Hope you have a great time. So much more to do then this too!
That is a lot in one day, it is cool to pack a bunch of stuff in one video but for most people is unrealistic to do all this :)
As I am visiting Washington DC in October your video was really helpful . We have a slot for the Capitol tour and try for the monument and I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for showing
So glad you enjoyed the video!
I highly recommend a visit to Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier / occurs every 30 minutes, 24/7 - it is the top “must see” item in D.C.
I toured the white house when I was young it's awesome
Boy you guys really got lucky with the crowds it is usually way more busy than that especially in the summertime. I was fortunate enough to get into a White House Tour back in October and it was fairly uneventful didn't really get to see much but what you do get to see is nice. And also the Metro there is just a fantastic thing to use to get around I love that City I've been there about five times now and can't wait to go back. Would actually consider living in the area also.
Wow! I am so excited I just got rid of Herpes permanently within 9 days. I’m so filled with joy right now all thanks (Drewi1) on UA-cam
Very special to see you at the same places I was in September 😊
I went to the White House in 8th grade and at the age of 40, I'm going again next week.😢
I’m going on a ef tour of Washington DC this year in April

Thanks Violet, appreciate the support!
@Violet BF Hello! It is a good sponsor too as the coffee is delicious and 7$ for a first bag is cheap.

Great video! That sunset was beautiful!
It was so amazing, we got really lucky!
The Korean War memorial statues are set up in such a way that no matter where you're standing around it, one of them is looking at you
FY, and decided to watch!
I loved it, and now I'm following you😁
Amazing bonding time ❤
been in the whitehouse, wasnt really all that cool looking but yk the thought of walking in the same places as past presidents is really cool

Very nice video, nicely touching on the main tourist spots.
I was curious why you missed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that is right next to the Lincoln Memorial.
the Tours are worth it hope you try them out someday. As a class we went right 5 months before 9/11 and went to see the House Legislate for 20 minutes
Thank you for this video😊😊😊
When I was young, I walked up the stairs in the Washington Monument.
My mom and sister waited for the elevator, and we met them at the top.
Of course today, you can't walk up.
We also toured the White House. Back then you just waited in line during open hours.
Oh man that must have been a good walk!
Another nice video...Gracias amigo
