Thanks for refreshing a childhood memory of the inside of the Washington Monument. During a family visit to D.C. in the mid-1950's, we kids convinced my dad to climb the steps with us -- both up and down! It was a wonderful adventure to examine the many special stones lining the inter walls of the monument. From the top I took a snapshot of the Jefferson Memorial with my "brownie" camera that took a prize in my hometown summer photo contest. Coming down was the hardest: rough on the knees. Needless to say we all had hearty appetites for lunch that day. What a pity the stairway had to be closed to protect the stones from vandalism!
I am 70 now but back in about 1970 I was part of a group of high school students who got to go inside and climb up the stairs ( the ones who didn't mind heights ). I cannot quite remember if I went all the way to the top ( or as far as the stairs went), but I remember seeing some of the memorial stone works.

Several years ago I took the elevator to the top of the monument. A National Parks ranger was up there and asked us if we wanted to do a 'walk down' tour of the monument through the steps. About 10 of us took her up on the offer and it was worth the time and effort. Most people only see the outside of the monument as a national treasure. There is so much more inside that I wish more people could experience.
They were. In 1964 my cousin and I both graduated h.s. and took a trip up to Canada. We walked to the top and the staff offered to let us ride the elevator back down. I remember it was August and 💦💦HUMID. We were soaked and dripping, but it was worth it.💦💦
A little funny story. My wife and I lived in Arlington, Virginia when I was stationed there while I was in the United States Air Force. My Mother and sister came to visit and we took them on a tour of Washington. When we got to the Washington Monument, we had to sit on the benches outside to wait for the elevator. This was in 1973.
