90s NICKTOONS: Worst to Best
Nickelodeon launched on April 1, 1979 as the first TV network entirely for kids. And with children’s programming comes cartoons. In its early years, the only cartoons broadcast by the channel were imports from other countries and reruns of things like Looney Tunes. However, this all changed on August 11, 1991 when it launched Nicktoons, which were original animated series produced exclusively for the channel. Nicktoons became so successful that they quickly changed Nickelodeon’s identity into a channel mainly for animated shows, which it still holds to this day. With that said, this period is often seen as the time where the greatest and most memorable Nicktoons came from. This begs the question, which 90s Nicktoon is the worst, and which is the best? That’s what we’re here to find out.

Kablam was so bad I forgot it existed because I refused to watch it.
Having SpongeBob as #1 just doesn't feel right. It's not really "90s". It came out the last year of the decade and has run mostly through the 21st century. I wouldn't consider it part of the original 90s lineup. Rugrats should definitely be #1.
@@ratedrva757You’re a mook😒
I’d rather watch CatDog than that stupid overrated SpongeBob😒
You’re a mook😒
This was a GOLDEN era for cartoons!
Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Doug, Angry Beavers & Rocko's Modern Life will always be my 5 Nicktoons of the 90's.
You're a real one
Normies: "How does Catdog poop?"
Me an intellectual: "There's an episode where they escape a giant octopus by farting, the gas bubble shoots out the middle. You have clearly never watched the show.. Good day sir!"
Maybe he decided that he doesn't like it simply because of how it ended. I almost felt like I should've given up on this show when I practically saw cat almost die just because dog refused to go back to eating meat. 🍖 🥓
Kablam is the most underrated Nicktoon show nobody talks about it.
I don't talk about it too just like you don't I don't either cause I never did
I miss Sniz and Fondue
I hate that cartoon
Damn man, I really loved this show 😁
@@Sonic12Lexi I used to watch It on UA-cam until…
*Angela Anaconda……*
I’m sick of people looking down on CatDog
May not be the best and most thought provoking show ever made, but it can actually be really entertaining
Cat and Dog aren’t the only ones that make the show for me
Rancid Rabbit, Winslow and The Greasers are really great foils and antagonists
Personally I wasn’t that into Ren and Stimpy and Rocko (though between the two I watched Ren and Stimpy more and I did enjoy Static Cling)
I prefer CatDog
Yeah I preferred CatDog over Ren and Stimpy as well.
I feel like catdog was used to sort of replace ren and stimpy because both shows are about a cat and a dog. If you want to sit down for 11 minutes and take a load off then watch some catdog.
To me, Rocko's Modern Life is the best of the three and is the underrated one.
It’s in the top 3 for me (CatDog, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and SpongeBob SquarePants).
Yeah ,catdog is very cool like SpongeBob or angry beavers
7:23 Technically speaking, AAH Real Monsters came out before Monsters Inc.
Yes
Hey, Arnold! will always be "Number 1" for me. It offers many important life lessons without being preachy or condescending: not just for those who watched the show back in the 90s and 2000s, but also for people today.
It also did something that very few cartoons succeeded in doing. The episodes weren't just all about Arnold or Helga. Viewers also got to see what daily life was like for Arnold's friends or those who interacted with him... and allowed people to reconsider their personality traits.
Me too
While Hey Arnold! is praised for great reasons, it’s certainly not perfect because of Helga acting like it’s worse than the end of the world when Arnold only sees her as a friend. I know he saved her life from bullies, but if it’s wrong for guys to keep having a crush on women who never had a crush on them, I’m pretty sure the same rule would apply to women to men as well.
m.ua-cam.com/video/i-eWhtSZ2oY/v-deo.html
You're thinking as an adult, when we was children didn't valorate those teachings
Imagine putting Angry Beavers so low. No taste.
I have no issues with the fact that Rocket Power is a product of its time. For me, personally, that was a much better era, and rewatching it is almost like a break from modern day.
I think it's Cheating to SpongeBob as #1. It started in 1999
Hey Arnold was a very adult cartoon
And Phil was an icon
Angry Beavers is not a show that everyone can appreciate...It''s such an underrated show also i'd argue it leans more towards adults than kids. It may not be your cup of tea but your criticisms are too shallow, sorry...
Agreed I like the show
I like angry beavers it was my fav show
Agreed 100%.
My favorite 90's NickToons are
•Rugrats
• SpongeBob SquarePants
• CatDog
• Hey Arnold
Same here.
What about Rocko's Modern Life?
@@retrofan4963 Haven’t seen much of Rocko’s Modern Life, but I have seen The Recycling Song from there. I do plan to watch a full episode someday.
@@retrofan4963 yeah, how is rocko? And the angry beavers
SpongeBob is really a 2000s cartoon. If the Simpsons isn't considered 80s, then SpongeBob shouldn't be considered 90s.
I knew SpongeBob was gonna be at the top. It is Nick's longest running NickToon and their most successful cash cow
Also the most overrated. I wouldve ranked it third worst behind Kablam and Real Monsters
@@BNSF2184 nah SpongeBob is not overrated it deserves what it is now
@@BNSF2184 I wouldn't say it's overrated. It's had it fair share of highs and lows for sure, but it's pretty undeniable how influential it has been, and arguably still is, no matter your opinion on it
@@matthewkuscienko4616 Rocko's Modern Life is better in my opinion.
Despite the questionable repetition of awarding AND OVERselling, SpongeBob in its prime has earned itself as either Top5 or even Top3 Best Nicktoon Shows ever created
Rocko’s Modern Life, Angry Beavers, and Catdog will forever be my top 3 favorite 90s nicktoons. Ahh Real Monsters as an honorable mention 👍
Ren & Stimpy, Doug, and Rocko's Modern Life are my top 3.
Rockos modern life is my all time favorite. So much fun!
Growing up, am I the only one who notices CatDog and the beaver brothers have purple and red noses respectively?
Ren & Stimpy was one of the two cartoons that would literally get me in trouble with my parents if I got caught watching them!
That's what made them so appealing to watch! #forbiddenfruit
What do you mean it got better after the second movie?
It got ten times worst and the developers rejected Steven Hillingburg's *one* request before passing, "don't make a spinoff"
And the spinoffs break 4th wall and destroy original backstories from the original seasons
I could go on, past season 5, it went nothing but downhill

Hate🤮: Courage the cowardly dog.
Abyssal🤡: Johnny Bravo.

Can you do Worst to Best videos on the Nicktoons from the 2000s and 2010s as well? It would also be cool to see It's Pony and Glitch Techs included in the latter.
Rocko's Modern Life is #1 best to me. I love Rocko's Modern Life.
I honestly think Rugrats should have stopped after the first movie. The 4th and 5th season, while not as charming as the first three, were still enjoyable and had a lot of heart. Also, if they were going to reboot the show, they should have did that with the All Grown Up show instead.
All these Nick toons will always be classics!
Nicktoons 90s we’re awesome
I didn't grow up with many of the Nicktoons cartoons (I was only born in the late 90s and didn't get Nickelodeon & Nicktoons until 2006), but out of that list, Rugrats would be my fave 90s Nick Cartoon, with SpongeBob a close second. I have vague memories of watching CatDog, as for the others thou, I'm not sure, although I will say that Hey Arnold is a show that I want to watch
Also, I hope you rank the 2000s & 2010s Nicktoons, and the CN cartoons too, if possible
My favorite show from the 90s is hey Arnold
Mine is Rocko's Modern Life.
"Hasn't Pixar done something like this before?"
Ahhh Real Monsters came out before Monsters, Inc.
5 Ice Age Movies Sinner Medals
Darwin- Scrat
Greed- The Shangri Llama
Gluttony- Lone Gunslinger
Lust- Scratte
Envy- Manny
Wrath- Captain Gutt
Sloth- Granny
Pride- Crash & Eddie
Mostly agree with this, only gripe here is with the final 4. Should've been Spongebob < Rugrats < Hey Arnold < Rocko
Also having Spongebob on this list at all is a huge copout, the show didn't even start until mid 1999 and didn't come into its own until early 2000's
It did you acting like it aired in December 1999 Season 1 looked darker then Season 2 the cartoon looked lighter
@@m56214The show aired less than 1 year in the 90s. SpongeBob is a 2000s cartoon. It's like calling someone born in 1999 a "90s kid" when they only spent a spectacle of their life in the 90s.
@@malbrojay4740 Exactly. SpongeBob is more of a 2000's cartoon than a 90's cartoon. SpongeBob spent more time in fame and prime throughout the 2000's and only spent 1 year in the 90's. People who actually grew up in the late 80's and early 90's grew up with actual 90's Nicktoons like Doug, Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, and Hey Arnold. SpongeBob is where 90's era of Nick ended and the beginning of what Nick offers in the 2000's.
@@retrofan4963 I noticed people do this a lot. If a TV show started airing in the late 80s and sometimes even in the mid-80s and continued airing in the 90s, some people will call it a "90s show". But if it's a show that started in late '99 like Courage The Cowardly Dog, which ran until '03, they'll still call it "90s".
@@malbrojay4740 Honestly, it depends when the TV show actually started and when it's mostly spent time on as well. SpongeBob is an easy answer because throughout its legacy, it literally only spent 1 year in the 90's. the 2000's is where SpongeBob mainly spent time with and 2000's kids grew up with it(If they watched it as the age of kids) in its prime. 90's kids on the other hand by that point, actually grew up with with actual 90's Nicktoons in their prime and would see SpongeBob as the beginning of the 2000's Nick era. Anyone who says otherwise are not around in the golden age of 90's Nickelodeon.
Shows that started in the mid 80's and continued in the 90's in your example is quite tricky because it can be classified and both an 80's show and the 90's show since they spent time around enough for both 80's kids and 90's kids to grow up with. The Simpsons is really tricky because while it obviously spent more in the 90's, and as well in cultural popularity starting with 1 episode in 89, it did started as Tracy Ulman shorts in 1987. Since it even spent around in 87, 88, and 89 as shorts for 80's kids to experience them. Simpsons can be classified as 80's in pop culture, but also moreso 90's pop culture in their more well-known incarnation. Yeah, that is a interesting thing to think about.
7. Ahh Real Monsters ( one of the creepiest cartoons made for kids🖤.)
Rocko’s Modern Life ( Really Adult. )
6. Hey Arnold ( really dramatic❤️.)
5. Ren and Stimpy ( Insane😜.)
4. Catdog ( Siblings of different personalities can relate to it❤️.)
3. Wild Thornberries ( I love animals. )
2. Rugrats ( Early seasons because of how the animation is trippy❤️.)
1. Spongebob ( Seasons 1-4.)
Plus Danny Phantom was great💚.
And when they do 90s Cartoon Network I hope they put Ed, Edd, n Eddy in 1st place❤️.
@BoyintheYThood Yep. Ed and Rolf are my favorite characters❤️. Son of a Shepherd and Buttered toast❤️. And My Favorite episode will always be One + One = Ed because it’s trippy and crazy❤️😜.
@@joshwilliams4976season 4 of SpongeBob isn't good,change my mind.
Rocket Power was a great show. Ahhh!!! Real monster I found more gross then funny. But it was fun to have a crossover with Rugrats.
Yeah! I Love rocket power and ahhh real Monsters too
Hey Arnold tops them all for me but I really loved Rugrats and Doug as well. Rugrats went downhill for me after Dil was born and Doug was awful after Disney took over. But Hey Arnold stayed amazing from start to finish ❤️
If you ask me, Doug should have just took all the great episodes of the Disney version and combined it all into the first Nicktoons movie. Rugrats should have stopped after the first movie, and the All Grown Up series should have been the one rebooted.
@@waters228_91 they'll probably eventually reboot all grown up too lol.
I think rocket power is better ,but hey Arnold is so cool too
No, Ahhh! Real Monsters came out long before Monsters Inc
Also, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers Good to Evil
I would love to see a ranking of 2000's Nicktoons
Same.
2010's too
ATLA would be on top, I bet
Or el tigre and Chalkzone
@@JuJu-bq9uq Those two are such underrated shows. El Tigre has tons of action and Chalkzone has a very unique and fun concept
As a fan of Doug, I actually liked Disney's Doug too, it's just a shame the show in general has kinda fallen off the face of the earth after the nineties, probably for the better they'd just make a bad remake of it.
Yea I think it gets unwarranted hate overall, but it is a definite step down compared to the Nickelodeon version. The worst part of it to me was the last season having way too many Quailman stories. They were fun but when over a third of them ate that it gets old quick, especially with many places in the middle together where 3 of 4 episodes in multiple spots are Quailman.
Why Disney have Doug version?I don't hear that can someone explain it to me?
@@vincentraizen4675 I'll try to summarize but basically, there was a deal that Nick wanted Jumbo Pictures (the producer of Doug) to make 65 episodes of Doug that would span for 5 seasons. However, before they could get season 5 out, Nick refused to have it made since Doug was so expensive to make and there was a budget freeze at the time (remember hand drawn animated shows are more expensive to produce and Doug was considered the least successful of the Nick shows). Other companies were interested in Doug most notably ABC and since Disney acquired ABC around that time as well, they were able to get Doug and was quick to get those episodes made (since Disney was REALLY interested in having Doug)
@@zeospark9715 oh ok that's why I'm so worried that Disney had a Doug version but ye atleast it's not Doug what if it's spongebob 😞😞
I remember disliking Rocket Power so much as a young kid that I started calling it "Rocket Pooper," which made my cousin - a lover of the show - soooooo mad 😂
that's cause your a cartoon hater, your cousin is way better than you
So much of this ranking doesn't make sense
Rocket Power was heartwarming and the characters weren't one-dimensional (also, pretty sure Reggie was the leader, not Otto?) , sure, aspects of it haven't aged brilliantly, but it was actually way ahead of its time in terms of diversity. Sam was the resident nerd, yeah, but he was also athletic; Reggie was into sports but she was feminine too and she was smart, I don't remember that kind of duality being on other shows around the time.
Catdog lacking an identity? I don't get it. Catdog has one of THE most iconic designs in animation and was an instant classic.
And putting Rugrats in 3rd because it went downhill after Dil's introduction but putting Sponge in #1 even though it had far worse seasons sure is a weird choice. Hell, putting Sponge in 1st is weird anyway because Hey Arnold was, without a doubt, the best Nicktoon. No other show leveled with kids the way Hey Arnold did, not before or since.
I agree with CatDog and Rocket Power being underrated. I liked that Rocket Power encouraged kids to be active. It didn’t work for me though lol. CatDog was mean spirited but it was good outside of that.
As for the top 3, I think it’s because SpongeBob at its best is funnier and more iconic than Rugrats at its best. Hey Arnold has really high highs but quite a few boring and forgettable episodes. Most of the praise is due to a handful of good episodes.
Make sense? It's literally subject
Cat Dog is Literally Ren And Stimpy Just because of different designs doesn't change it
My top 5 nicktoons from the 90s are
1. Hey Arnold
2. Rocko's Modern life
3. Rugrats

The Rocket Power placement is quite correct.
SpongeBob is the only 90s Nicktoon that keeps producing new episodes every decade! We might as well watch new SpongeBob episodes in the 2030s!
I’m not even surprised that SpongeBob SquarePants is #1. That show became the Nickelodeon’s equivalent to Super Mario as well, as the meme fueled material.

This may be a stretch, but you can do a bi-monthly version of the Tournament of Power from Dragon Ball Super and format it similar to your Squid Games videos. You can pick three to five teams with five select characters from a particular show, cartoon, movie, anime, or game franchise, either keep it within the shows or have a crossover, have each group theoretically fight as teams and analyze each character based on power level, fighting capability, teamwork, and adaptive when teammates, or certain teammates are downed, like how would Aang fight if Katara was eliminated. For example, you can have three teams out of five characters from Family Guy, The Simpsons, and King of the Hill in a competition or pick the five characters from Nintendo, Capcom, and Namco. The contestants can hold series that are both combat or non-combat based, like Disney or Cartoon Network, as long as there is a sort of theme between the teams and you can stick closely to the mainstream visual versions if you like, so manga or comic book characters can stick exclusively to their TV and film versions if necessary if you'd decide Marvel, DC, or Dragon Ball. Remember, the rules of Tournament of Power doesn't guarantee the strongest fighter will win.
