Cheers from sunny Ireland! Always had a clunk when shifting gears (1st and sometimes 2nd). Not all the time, I was thinking that it's a clue for something developing. Thanks for putting my mind at ease (my 1989 90 drives ok, I just became too careful with it).
@@BritannicaRestorations don't get me wrong, ALL your videos are brilliant! I find value in almost all. Love your "hmmm, wonder what that might be" attitude.
Hello Mike, thanks very much for this presentation, as it was very helpful. I've had my TD5 Defender 130 for 11 Years this year now, and I have already had my Gearbox rebuilt back in 2015 with new synchros and Lathe shaft installed. I also bought a complete bearing kit set for the LT230 Transfer case as well. But Since driving it, I have noticed a whine that has been going for a few weeks now, and I do suspect that it is the nut at the back, for which you had presented here in your video. Thank you very much for this, as it has been very helpful. Cheers from Townsville Australia, Matt.
Very nice Mike. It would be nice to see a Bosch ve pump re seal job if possible. Mine is leaking on my 110, just drips but would be nice to see how these are rebuilt.
Hi Mike. Appreciate all your videos. Why would I be getting a clunk changing gears every time I depress the clutch? Just had the gearbox and transfer case rebuilt at no small cost and it's driving me nuts
Hello Mike, I own a defender 90 model year 1996.. I made engine swap V8 4.6L rover engine + automatic gear box which was fitted on the original defender transfer case .. My problem is that when I remove my foot from pedal "fast" I hear a clunking sound.. I took the car to the garage and they changed for me the UJ but the clunking sound didn't go away .. they told me now it could be the transfer case and I need to replace it, could this be the issue? Noting that I don't have any problems with engaging 4H,4L, diff lock.
Love your videos Mike, they keep me informed so I know what the garage mechanic is talking about and so they don't fool me. My 1996 300tdi has always had play where the rear prop goes into t box bit rhe last few weeks I'm getting a double clunk when changing up gears, not all the time, depends on engine revs. Gearbox and clutch were renewed 5 yrs ago. Garage is saying I need new t box. I go through at least to ujs a Yr on rear prop, just changed it. Would it need new t box or just something simple?
I know the LT230 is pretty bomb-proof but does this lead to increased wear of the of the dogs on the gear and the inside of the selector hub which it meshes with if they are slopping about inside? On my 90 I know if I lift off the throttle quickly I get a drive-train clonk which mainly is the T-box, likewise if I re-apply power briskly, which is why I always apply and remove power as gently as I can (thinking aloud here but applying power hard will cause bad clonk as the engines drive sends power via the driven side of the T-box then slams the dog gear of the selected gear, on overrun created via an upward gear change it will be more gentle but on a downshift it could cause slap on the opposite faces of the mesh). I guess they space the dog gears much further apart to make it easier to select the gear but this seems like a clonk that could be engineered out with closer spacing. What are your thoughts on this and how robust do you think the parts are given that they seem to be able to last 100'000's of miles.
Hello sir , my All wheel Drive cayenne will not move unless I have diff's locked ? I have jacked up both ends and wheels turn the other in opposite direction. No leaking or loose things I can find. I had prior clicking on exceleration but not turns (bad vibrate from 5 to 20mph in rear , thought was bearing before this happened. Also my park gear is not working when car is shut off. Any test I can do to find out its the tc, diff or CV axle ? I thank you ....
@@BritannicaRestorations ..the driveshafts only spin with diff locked ..otherwise no motion .in any gear .. Does this write off CV issue? Thank you ...sorry for a Porsche model question...
Hi Mike, have a small problem I' like to share with you on my DEF 90 (2008). Engin coughs and white smoke comes out of exhaust while doing so, and seems it wants to stall. I thought it might be faulty diesel filter or possibly water so I changed it but problem persists. Any idea what can it can be thats causing this? Thanks for your thoughts . Albert

Legend! ill have to give that nut a try and hopefully a tighten on my 110.. it has quite a big driveline clunk!

The nut is worth checking - it is not the first I have seen come lose

Check axle flanges, UJ's and CV's for wear

Sounds like it may just need re shimming

Why did they change the gearbox - were the splines worn?
Is it the same with the LT230 in the later Puma TDCi models?
I think so -- never see one
