Thank you Brian I really needed help understanding how to use this material. I am a old time flytyer (67years old). I stopped fishing and tying about 30 years ago so i could raise my son and daughter, back then there was about 95% feathers and fur for tying flies. So when I started tying again about a year ago when my daughter said "Hey Daddy why dont you take me fishing" then looked on line for tying material I was like What all this crazy synthetics out there. Lazer dub caught my eye fast for smal minnow flies but didnot know where to start. I was watching your video and Bam you tied up a small bait fish minnow and that was a perfect tie. Thanks again Brian you helped a old tier get back some of the passionfor tying.....and you are a hoot to watch.
I've watched this a few times to get the hang of it. I've not got real good eyes, at 63. But I love tyeing ( for a year now ) your video's are very informative. Thank you for dharein
Just recently found your videos-I groomed dogs for 32 years -Yep I've got a slicker brush-enjoy your wit too-ps I'm 75 still love to fish-picked up the flyrod after I retired-and starting to tie my own flies
Brian, we like you even if you don't ask for likes. I didn't know I needed more dubbing on top than below. Lesson learned. As for tying tips: why so many different shapes of rubber legs and when to use them.
Very helpful info. I struggle with some of the synthetics and this gives me hope. Being fairly new to tying (barely 2 years with Covid interrupting my class) I'd be happy to see any tips you share. Especially how to substitute a material for something called for but you don't have and why a certain material is chosen over another. Hooks and why a style is chosen over another. Thanks for sharing.
Another Pro Tip! Chuckled when fumbling then tossing the Chartreuse pack early on then again when you clanged the dry marker off the trash can rim. Makes you more regular guy! Keep em coming
Dude, guess I've been living under a rock! because I just found your channel, awesome videos, great information and in a wacky sort of fun entertaining way "YOU" very informative! just burned through a few and can't wait to have time to sit and watch more. Off to cook dinner, catch you later. Thank You.
I would like to see a video on hook types and if and how you choose them for a particular fly pattern/type of fly. Thanks a lot for your videos, I learned a lot!
Very timely video. Just got some laser dub to try out. Your proportional rule of keeping 2/3 of the material on the top of the hook shank so the fly will swim is a particularly good one. You said it in reference to laser dub but it’s true also for just about any streamer including traditional or more recent materials like hair wings & feather wings or ones made from Puglisi style fibers. It would be interesting for you to contact the manufacturer of laser dub & ask why the difference in lengths & texture for what is supposed to be the same material. I’m sure we would all be interested in the answers. Future video: What steps do you go through when designing a new fly? What prompts the desire - a new fishing issue? - a new material to try? What are first & later stages?
Another great tying tip video! Keep up the good work. Dig the channel. Maybe a tying tips video on just heads of flys, how it affects the swim, purpose/ reasoning for the style.
Enjoyed the video as always, Brian. I'd love to see a video on incorporating weight into streamers or how much weight is even necessary. I definitely struggle with how heavy my fly should be.
There are those who say you should not weight the fly you should use a sinking line. I think the theory is that a weighted fly does not "swim" as well as an unweighted fly.
FANTASTIC information!!! I really like the occasional videos of materials uses and methods as well as other information. I love watching all the different flies, methods and recipes but I like to deviate from original recipes and try my own. Videos like this one helps me thinks of different uses of materials. Thanks
I am definitely guilty of using too much Laser Dub. Great video, tons of tips, time to hit up the vise and improve my skills! I think foam materials would be a great topic for future videos. Shit can be tricky
That little bait fish is awesome! You hinted on proportions! I would like to see a video on that. How you build your fly proportions and why it matters! Thanks for a great video!!
Brian, I've tried complex multi-material flies that take 20 minutes to tie and found (over the years) that they don't swim as well or fish as well as the simple 3-minute bucktail or lazer-dub streamers like the one you showed. Two tone (dark back, light belly, colors to suit) , a (small) bit of flash and (maybe) a touch of color (like red gills) has always been effective. I tie streamer patterns in sets of different lengths (1 1/2"; 2 1/2" up to 5 1/2") that imitate specific forage and fish the size that is one size bigger than the forage at that time - because fish (like people) will take the biggest piece of pie first :) Would like to see you tie some Bob Popovics style bucktail streamers. They have become my go-to fly for any species that eats baitfish.
You mentioned wool , kick it old school an give us some tips on da wool ! You’re vids have been very helpful for my ties . Thanks for keeping it reel !
Brian nice job on the laser dub video some good tips, will help me out. Would like to see a video on when to weight streamers and how much weight to use, specifically talking about weighting with lead wire to achieve different actions and purposes.
New sub after that vid! Craft fur and GSP thread, how to keep it even on the hook. Flies swim really crappy if not evened out. Hook selection would be great too. So many choices these days but most of the popular hooks are never in stock. Great vid!
I would like to see a video on how to v-tie longer materials in to achieve different bait fish profiles. Thanks for the videos really informative. Oh and did anyone ever call you Brian Wise- ass? Seems appropriate for the way you goof around during your videos.
Great video full of awesome tips. Thank you so much for sharing. I think it would be great to see you make a video showing different ways of blending dubbing. Such as how to blend natural materials versus synthetic. I have so many people I know that blend synthetic fibers in a coffee grinder still and get frustrated when it comes out in tiny little pieces when in reality they hoped it would retain the length they originally cut it to.
Great videos! Please dive into the complex world of hackle for a rookie. Hen hackle, strung hackle, dryfly hackle, streamer hackle, schlapen, different grades of such, so on and so on Gets my head spinning!
Awesome video!!! Keep up the great work. I always seem to have problems packing deer hair for the head of the streamer. I also end up cutting my thread when I trim the head.
I have a love/hate relationship with Faux Bucktail. It is great for propping up materials, and to keep materials from fowling around the hook....but it isn't on the same level as bucktail.

Great video as always, any tips on selecting hook sizes(weights) and styles when tying streamers? Kinda sucks when you whip something cool up and only realize it has to much or not enough keel/weight to swim correctly when you take it fishing
How about a tying tips on tails for streamers. Lots of options on the market. Have a good stash of them myself. Some have produced well for me. Others not so well. What do you like for particular applications and how do you attach them?
Great vid. I haven't used Laser Dub yet but would like to try it out. Would you be kind enough to share the link of your smaller fly at 13:40 in this vid?
Well, this video is 2 yrs old, but here goes... how do you keep the taper from getting too fat. Trying to tie size 12 scud hook but it always seems that the end taper ends up too fat
I can't say why the lengths are so different in between different colors. Being a synthetic material it should be fairly easy for Hareline to get that more consistent. I am betting as far as the texture and feel of the material is due to the dye. Different color dyes effect materials completely differently. Just look at how hard it can be to find good black bucktail
Great tutorial. I bought a couple packs of lazer dub a long time ago and struggled with it to the point of giving up with that material. After seeing you show the differences in material between packs and colors I think I've figured out some of my problems with it. Guess I'll need to break those packages back out. Have you gotten much into brush building for a tutorial?
Dude! You have a child in college?! Wow you look like a youngster! Anyway. How and why you choose the hooks you use? Are there certain flies materials that match with certain hooks? Love your content. Oh and you remind me of the First We Feast Hot Ones dude.
Great video, would be cool to see how a rattle is attached to a clousers or similar fly. Been having trouble keeping the bucktail tight to the body with a rattle. 👍👍
You've mentioned alcohol-based markers before...is that the same as permanent markers, (i.e. Sharpie) or do you have a brand of markers you prefer? The DOA pattern was stellar!
There may need to be a marker video for the future. Where I have landed with markers (the short story) is Sharpies for barring (basically, color you don't want to "run") and Copic Markers for throats (or colors you want to blend where "running" doesn't hurt anything. Hope that makes sense..... By the way---I totally agree, the DOA is crazy awesome.
