Just by the title, I clicked "like" on this one! I LOVE using peacock and ostrich in my flies! Between the colors and the buggy properties of peacock, I use it all over the place!

Peacock herl is the first material I tied nymphs with too. Oh man- that takes me back.

Really enjoying the tutorials.
Peacock is just a staple and is so versatile. Pheasant tail nymph was the first tie for me and I use it all the time. I like using it to make beetle wing cases, thorax’s, and even played with making legs with it. I always have extra since I use a ton.
Never thought about making a rope with the thread…taking that tip.
Peacock is a great material. I sometimes use the herls as the topping on a wing on some flat wing/deceiver style flies. Peacock gives that fish like shine underwater and really illuminates.

Dubbing loop herl blew my mind. Thanks for that one.
Steaming herl can help the fibers stand up if you purchase some strung that is kind of matted down.
If you’re a recreational tier and doing only a handful of quill bodies at a time, a pencil eraser works well to take fibers off of the quill pretty quickly.

A testament to the versatility of peacock herl is that besides streamers and nymphs, it makes an awesome body on the renegade dry fly.

Yep pretty sure peacock herl is one of the first materials I used as well! I still love using it. Although my favorite herl is definitely ostrich herl.

Would recommend that you always ribbit counter to the normal wrapping direction like you did in the latter part of this video? I've always thought that counter ribbit is better that if you ribbit the same way. Inquiring minds want to know. BTW you need to bring your 10 wt rods up here to Michigan and try and land one of our salmon in October. Keep the good stuff coming Brian.
With Peacock Herl it isn't 'quite' as important to counter-rib, but highly recommended

Nice job! I like the thread loop technique, have you tried twisting the herl with oval tinsel, a la Alec Jackson? Adds strength and nice flash. How about tips on tools? I am constantly annoyed with any &/or all my hackle pliers, have several dubbing loop spinners, scissors I use are what’s in reach first, have all different brands and styles of bobbins, etc.. thanks!

🤔the peacock swords are used in salmon and seatrout flies as an over wing also, possibly in the UK more than your side of the pond

If only I'd seen this before I tied a bunch of chironomids, or should I say tried to tie a bunch of chironomids and got frustrated with the tips of the herls breaking time and again. Of course, it just pushed me deeper into the streamer game :-)

Thanks again for a nice educating video. Allthough you did not go through much of using peacock on a larger (pike size) streamers (on back for example), is that something that you dont just do/use?
I actually probably use Herl on streamers more than I do tying nymphs anymore.....just totally didn't think about putting that in this video.
I thought of a couple names for a playlist of your fly tying tips that was too good not to share: "Wise on the Vise" or "Vise Wise". Not sure why it popped into my head lol

I struggle with getting peacock into my flies. The crap is just SO fking fragile! putting it in dubbing loops is a pain, and if you blink just wrong the stupid herl just breaks.
