The love/hate with old Polaris triples, eh? I'd be willing to bet that piece of metal was indeed a wristpin circlip that was in the bottom of the case when someone did a piston swap and didn't take the lower end apart. Seen it many times before and that's why other than some emergency situations, like when on a trip, I always pulled the crank out when I did a piston. On the ReXseL, even if you fog them down, summer moisture, time, and today's crappy fuel will eventually wash out those bearings enough to see those results. Enjoy the enthusiasm your group has in keeping the old iron alive.
Todd sleds are a love hate relationship we love to ride drink beer and fix too here in Maine had a clip fall off and wreck a piston in my Blizzard 340 back in the day runnin a 97 xc 600 with updated monoblock with pto oil feed and reinforced crank bearings brakes locked up tonight oh well just another reason to have a beer love your channel

i pulled the triple out of my xlt a couple weeks a go after doing a top end on it to do crank seals on it now when we did the top end we were going to do seals but we said ah they should be fine after sitting since 01 and only having 3000 miles on it but i guess we where wrong but hey i heard it run and im in love with the sound of it and i cant wait to get it back together and ripping for the first time in 21 years!!! cheers!
Despite what others say about them,i find them to be very good machines. The EFI is really durable if one knows his way around a multimeter and a service manual.
I know the feeling got my xcr 600 out and melted a piston then one of my 650s crank seals went bad and destroyed the motor then my storm snapped a brand new track and my ultra tried to burn to the ground luckily it wasn’t to bad

This all happened today my blower quit working in my car. So no heat. Got truck out bearing goes out in the ac compressor. Then I get lean code. My fuel pump is probably going out I have knew about that for awhile now. I can't win it seems.

I assuming that RXL uses a Mikuni oil pump? Ive never seen or heard of one that failed without dumping tons of oil in IE they fail in the open position by design. Not to say it cant happen though as anything is possible. I have seen where the cable becomes disconnected in the junction box though so maybe check that if you havnt already. That piece of wire reminds me of a running motor I once bought, I pull the bottom end apart for seal replacement but because Id seen/heard it running I left the top end alone, well I lost compression and upon teardown I decover that the previous owner used COPPER WIRE as a wrist pin clip! Cant make this shit up. Cylinder and piston scrap metal at that point. Sorry you had shitty week but you will make it right no doubt.

The bright side, everything will run like new and you didn't break down 10 miles out on a trail by yourself. Always look at the positive, and you have a new go-to for parts!!

I think I’m getting my first sled tomorrow. 03 pro x 800! I’m pretty excited. My little brothers owned a few Mach z 800 triples and an 800 storm as well. Lots of fun, but he always had them so I didn’t need to buy one!
Js them vmax a force to be recognized with. I'm from Michigan. I ripped old Polaris, skidoo mxzx440 , and when I got on a vmax I was actually afraid lol

Going out tomorrow in the Oregon cascade mountains and leaving the 07 and 17 mountain cats at home. It will be more fun to ride a 93 storm 750, 93 Vmax-4 750 and a 96 MachZ 780 on the trails. Also if your parts source has any 750 storm stuff my buddy needs a jack shaft which seems impossible to find for that one year only classic triple he's trying to keep going.

I had the exact same looking piece of metal in my xcr I just picked up. PTO side scuffed the cylinder up pretty good. Exactly what I thought It was a c clip off but nope. Hey Mr.clyne I’ve messaged you before about my 1995 rxl 650 having a low end bog I was told the clutch it bad but not sure if it’s the primary or secondary they just told me the weights and buttons are messed up , it will idle all day when I first take off it accelerates perfect then it will bog out when I try again and tries to die if I give it any throttle until I get up to about 40 mph then it opens up great and has tons of power and ideas ?
I would definitely think something is going on in the clutching. I would pull both clutches apart clean and inspect everything. Be sure the proper belt is on it.

I think an oil starvation problem as well, I have 2 of those 650 s one with fuel injection, Learned from a wise old triple lover, Add a cup of oil to each tank of gas, plugs run a little darker but never have had another problem in 7 years and over 8000 miles on the clocks.

I had a 91 rxl 650 the crank shaft design is bad the in let oil holes are to small from the factory and i seized mine rippen down the lake...
I can happen. This is a 94 and they did improve in it some with the 02 engine

I think an oil starvation problem as well, I have 2 of those 650 s one with fuel injection, Learned from a wise old triple lover, Add a cup of oil to each tank of gas, plugs run a little darker but never have had another problem in 7 years and over 8000 miles on the clocks.
