GoPro Hero 3+ and GoPro Hero4 Live Video Out for FPV or Preview

  • I wanted to share an update related to getting live video out on a GoPro Hero 3, 3+ (amzn.to/1FzqS04), and GoPro Hero 4 (amzn.to/1AOlULL). Recently, I've been using the nifty Eachine FPV transmitter:
    amzn.to/1t46g9P
    and it works great. The major complaint I have with this is the 1S lipo that's required to power it and the funky connector. Hopefully they'll release a new version that gets power from the GoPro. It turns out that the Eachine is not compatible with the Hero4 that my buddy let me borrow.
    This video talks through the basic setup to get the GoPro video out cable working. This cable is super cheap at Amazon and easy to interface with the Boscam setup:
    amzn.to/19o49qB
    This will work for live video and FPV from a GoPro Hero 3, 3+ and 4. This is done with the ever popular Boscam TS351 transmitter and RC805 receiver combo:
    amzn.to/1nNJArL
    My main intent is to be able to get live video in the air so we can frame our shot. This is a great way to do it.
    Please feel free to share you comments or suggestions below.

    the change with the 4 is the back long serial connector..thats why you must use a usb out.

    I'm late with this video, but I hope you will still reply.
    What was the other camera you showed? Not the GoPros, but the skeleton one? I need a high quality, hopefully HD, camera that can hook up with this gear and I can't get my GoPros to work.
    Thanks. Great video!

    Hey Dennis,
    You've got some great videos and they have helped me immensely!
    I'm using that cable you've got listed with the Hero4 Black and only getting 480i to my Black Pearl Rc801 using a Boscam TS832 Tx.
    Is that normal? I can't find any info anywhere as to what kind of resolution comes out of that mini usb port.
    Thanks!

      +Ray Lotier Glad you got it working. I'm not sure exactly the resolution coming out that mini usb port. You're right that searching out doesn't yield much information. I'll dig around some more and see what I can find out. Please do the same :)

    Hello Dennis,
    Thanks for this very informative video. What was the firmware version of your GoPro H4 when you shot the video? Mine is currently v3.00 (bought 3 weeks ago) and I can't manage to get live feed out from the USB port, even by using proper cables. I was wondering if it could be a firmware version issue.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 років тому

      +Clément de la Fontaine I do recall a certain version of firmware where users complained about not being able to get live video. I believe my current firmware version is HD3.03.03.00 and it's working well. Now I'm not sure what version I was using in this video unfortunately. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

      Hello, thanks for reply. I just found a solution, was a easycap's software bad setting! My current Hero4 Silver version is HD4.01.03.00.00 and there is a live feed at the USB port. Great! What's surprising is that the guy from GP support platform don't even know that there is a live feed...

    This video as good as it is, does not actually explain specifically what is different between the USB port of the GoPro Hero 3 and 4.
    On the spec sheet, they both use mini-USB specification.
    So what is the technical reason?
    The cable appears to be a standard mini-USB ??

    Hey Dennis!
    I really like your videos!
    Do you have any suggestions if MIC IN AND VIDEO OUT over USB is possible (both with usb) ?
    I heard that the ID pins resistor declares which pins will be used. I want to monitor the picture and record audio with extern mic..
    Would love to hear from you

    • @123joko312

      Dennis Baldwin i found a cable called composite combo cable. Quiet expensive (30$) but there are video out, audio out, mic in and normal USB. i am not sure if i can use them at the same time, but i will try it out and tell you the result. Maybe it wont work because the ID pin has a resistor to the case of the miniUSB plug, the gopro only works if the right resistor is connected between id and case. 100kohm for video and 330kohm for mic in or something like that. Dont know if gopro can recognize both at the same time.

    what is the range of the setup of hero 4 and is the setup is coming hot after a while ???
    And thanks for the video ;)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 років тому

      The range is limited by the range of the transmitter and antenna. You can expect to easily get up to half a mile with this setup and with better antennas you can get a mile. Generally the transmitter will get hot but it should be dissipated with a heat sink. There are others with the right power transmitter and antenna that can get well over 3 miles. I haven't done this, but know it's possible.

    I've had issues with the H4 Black when recording video. Same setup as you (USB video-out cable with Boscam video transmitter). The video comes in normal when the GoPro is on standby, but the moment I press record, it goes nuts with weird colors and scan lines. It's barely usable. Recorded video is fine though. Never had an issue with the H3, only a problem since upgrading.
    Have you ever experienced this?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 років тому

      +William Levasseur See the comment from FPVREVIEWS where he says that the latest update doesn't support video out. If that's true talk about a huge downer. GoPro is trying to get everyone to buy their drone when it comes out. I find that shocking if that's the case.

    HI Dennis, how true is it that when a gopro firmware will be updated, they disabled the fpv anymore? in your video it seems that the two gopros looks prety good for fpv.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 років тому

      +Glenn Balbz I've read that too but when I upgraded my Hero 3+ to the latest firmware I didn't have any problems. CAUTION: Hero GoPro has disabled the live video output thru their camera microUSB socket on their latest firmware updates.......this is true.......Makes no difference which cable you purchase or which FPV xmitter connects to GoPro.... you are DOA with respect to FPV for GoPros........
    They also claim that any attempt to rollback the firmware to a previous version will break your camera and void any warranties.

    Good call on not using any WIFI options on the GoPro...I've used the DragonLink's spectrum analyzer feature and it puts a TON of interference around the 2.4 band, especially up close. It would be terrible to lose a ship because you didn't want to use the buttons on the camera ;)

      tpalshadow thanks for posting that you've put the GoPro near a spectrum analyzer. I have long wondered if and how much it leaked RF. I always suspected it did. No one has been able to tell me yes or no. I don't have access to a detector so I have not been able to confirm that for my self.

    So there is no power feed to the camera with this cable setup Dennis. You just have a video feed and ground (black and yellow) The camera is powered by its own battery with no feed from the TX at all? If that's correct this is the only way to go.

    • @startazz
      @startazz 9 років тому

      You can power the go-pro with the battery still in if you like and it will also charge the battery up,depending on what VTX your using will determine how you go about this,using a FS or Emmersion VTX you can power the camera (Go-Pro) through the 5v out on those VTX but other Chinese makes you would have to use a Ubec,you should be able to google this info or check on the forums to get some better info. :-)

    • @startazz
      @startazz 9 років тому

      Allan Main My bad I thought you were asking if it was possible to power the go-pro through the VTX,that's the way I tend to do it is just use the Go-Pro battery and take spare ones with me,just use the video and ground cables as you said,the less wires the better IMHO,well it is for me what with so many different VTX's. :-)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 років тому

    Very confusing: The "pin outs" for video and ground are obviously the same for both cameras as you prove by getting video using the simple 2 wire adaptor so I don't understand why your plug in board does not work :-( Thanks for the video.

    You can't use the hero 4 wifi to do fpv because the range is not that great. My Hero 4 Silver works for about 20m without anything in the way but then it will freeze because the gopro is too far away from the phone.

    when using go pros "for FPV" you say you get distortion. what do you mean by this. im only asking bc i'm building an FPV system and planed on using my gopro as the camera

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 років тому

      +Casey Vitti Good question. Distortion may be the wrong word, but you'll see the world through the lens of the GoPro which has that fisheye look to it. So things on the side of the view will look closer than they actually are and things near the center will be further away. Hope that makes sense. It's definitely FPVable but takes some getting used to.

      I like the Lumenier monitor you can see here:
      www.getfpv.com/8-lumenier-lcd-fpv-monitor.html
      Now I haven't used this combo but it looks very reasonably priced for Fat Shark googles. These are more of a starter version:
      amzn.to/2cjlraX
      and this connector should get your GoPro communicating with the FatShark TX:
      www.getfpv.com/fatshark-gopro-to-tx-5p-molex.html
      Finally, there are a lot of FPV bundles on Amazon that you may want to check out. Just search for "fpv kit" or "fpv bundle". Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

    Good call not using wifi in air. Two weeks ago i crashed my quad with Hero4 Session (with powered on wifi and transmitted to phone). After tedious recovery from a tree i pulled logs from APM 2.6 and got to the root of problem: Signal Loss, so the threat is real.

    All good info Dennis and i'd have to agree with what you said about the Wi-Fi and the interference,i did how ever find a way around this on the forums,by using a little template that you can get online and cut out and put around the go-pro which does help to cut out most if not all the interference,depending on what you use to make your template from,i used kitchen foil and a beer can and the best results came from the beer can,maybe because it was thicker.
    I'm sure a google search would bring up the template,i would add it but it was well over a year or that I used it so I can't remember where I got mine from sorry. :-)
