Thrill is really what kick-started Band-Maid's journey to become a hard rock band. The group started in 2013, but a year before Thrill dropped in 2014 and received over two million views in the first weeks of release on Facebook, the Maids hadn't played much rock music at all. And the 2nd guitarist, founder and lyricist, Miku, didn't even know how to play guitar. It's an incredible story and we are so lucky they stayed together during those early years to become, in my mind, the best hard rock band on the planet! Thx, Josh!

Great reaction and when they first started, their label provided the songs (and allowed for some arrangement by the band) and Thrill was one of those provided songs and the one that the band decided was a direction they wanted to go in, hard rock. This is their first music video and although the band did not know it at the time, the label was going to drop them if it didn't do well, but it did, it went viral on a Facebook J-Rock channel and saved the band.

A live performance is a must - Domination, Manners / Blackhole are goodies but you could choose anything ,it really doesn't matter as they are all awesome.

Kanami (lead guitar) plays a standard 6 string guitars. Here, her signature Addictone but for years now she plays PRS Custom 24's. You must try a live video next! Band-Maid are a live band and it's where they really shine.

A thing about the maid outfits, Josh: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Welcome to Band-Maid. Almost a four year veteran "Maidiac" here. If this video/song didn't make it I don't know where Band-Maid would be today, I do know where they wouldn't be....still together making killer music after ten years. We Maidiacs will never let you down. They are great LIVE but I always suggest watching the official music videos first then go to the LIVE versions. Their music videos are a thing of beauty and art, especially the latest ones from like 2020 on. The music videos will set the mood for the song and live version will show the power and energy of these girls. Classic videos to watch, IMHO, is "Dice", "Blooming" and "Manners" and RINNE"....Manners being the latest of the four. There's a great story to RINNE....you'll see.

Nobody's said it yet, so I will...
This is a great, solid song, but it only hints at what they became. You ain't seen nothin' yet!
The thing about Band- Maid is, you gotta hear at least five songs to even begin to understand what they can do and find that tune that gives you an entry- point to it. Many are the fans who had a song they were "meh" about and then it became one of their favorites after getting acclimated by songs that were more in their accustomed sweet spot. The 'Maids are bridge- builders and horizon- expanders.

They just played a 3 1/2 hour 10th Anniversary Tour Final at Yokohama Arena, and they included "Thrill," as well as "Forward" from their very first EP. Both songs written by Kentarō Akutsu, whom they worked with quite a bit in the first couple of years. They played 33 songs in that concert and they could play four more concerts that size and not run out of repertoire ... and they wouldn't have any "dead" spots either. It's amazing, actually.

Very good reaction. Band-Maid's music video recordings are great, but to really understand this band is to see their live performances. Playing before a concert audience, Band-Maid joyously owns the stage in a way that connects them personally with each crowd member. It is clear that the Band-Maid members love to play music together and their enthusiasm envelopes their audience in a very special and endearing way. Whether it is hard rock or tender ballads, this band of extremely gifted musicians knows how to entertain and involve their audiences in truly awesome concerts. Play any of their official concert song releases and see this amazing band's impressive performance skills in action. They are easily one of the best rock bands currently on the planet. Cheers.

This band is indeed a hidden gem, they deserve much more fanfare then they get. ALL of those ladies are epically talented. Misa(the barefoot assassin & Bass guitarist) can be seen on some videos doing a pick tuck- where she seamlessly twitches between picking and fingering the strings by tucking the pick into her fingers like a magician. I would suggest an official live video for your next reaction....like 'Freedom' or "Domination", both from the Line Cube club in Japan and they really show the crowd interactions and how much better they are live.

A phenomenally talented and creative band that can mix genres effortlessly. The bonus being this band cares about it's fan base and their natural charisma will steal your heart away at the same time as they musically forearm smash you into submission. What a fcken band Po, thanks for the B-M reaction, no suggestions as their catalogue is one big pot of musical gold. Cheers from Oz 👍🍻

"Thrill" is Band-Maid's very first video...
    ...and almost their last.
Unbeknownst to the band, their label had just dropped them and their management wanted to break them up and assign them to different projects.
They had released an EP that didn't chart and had just released the single for which a video shoot was scheduled. The A-side was a pleasant, bouncy acoustic song, but the B-side was "Thrill" and when they showed up to the shoot, the band had decided they'd rather do "Thrill" because they wanted to do hard rock. It was a decision they later found out was the miracle that saved them. "Thrill" went viral on a J-Rock Facebook channel, and received millions of views in North America. Management quickly and quietly scrapped the plans of splitting them up and got them a better record contract.
Band-Maid will amaze you. They get better every year.
Just go to there YT channel and pick songs at random. They're all good and the live versions are better. You can't go wrong with Band-Maid.

These women work so hard. That being said they also have a charmed life. Si many things had tto fall into place for BandMaid to exhist. Again underneath all of the magic is a ton of hard work and commitment to improvement. I love all the Maids. No favorites but Miku Kobato is the most admired Maid in my heart. She has tirelessly promoted the band since the very start. She sings second lead AND plays the guitar simultaneously. She is the MC for the band AND is the primary lyricist. She has a will of iron. I always say you could drop Miku in the middle of the Sahara with a kazoo and she would still would have become a rock star!

Thrill. Simple, linear, the first spark of the BAND MAID sound. The precursor of the rest of the discography. Our Maids would struggle until 2016 to take control of their music and prove they could write their own songs, and they have done so ever since. We have all been through so much together ;) .

Yes, 'Shambles' was commissioned for the season two closing theme of the Netflix anime Kangan Ashura. And yes again! This was their fist Music Video, and, had it not gone viral, it probably would have been their last. Unbeknownst to them, their label was going to drop them if it didn't hit. Luckily it hit so big they thought their account had been hacked and then numbers were faked. Luckily this was a patter that kept repeating itself. The would get offers they thought were a joke until the checks cleared. But you're at the beginning! So far back Miku hadn't learned to play guitar yet. Kanami would get her up to speed, but right now it's basically a prop. They all just keep getting better and better. But if you're interested in each girl's backstory, Orenji has done some pretty good documentaries on each of them.

A lot of us began our maidiac journey with this one - myself included. If you really want to keep going in chronological order (ish), check out Real Existence Live on their channel. As you go along, the band gets better and better until you get to the ridiculous and goddess like level that they're at now. Do a couple more early ones, then we'll set you up with the early Gold Rush Interviews, then another song or two - then their alter ego Band Maiko, and steadily into the controlled chaos that's still somehow melodic that you have today. Kanami Tono is not only a killer guitarist, she's from another planet when it comes to songwriting. This early stuff was not written by them. It will be soon, but not yet - they really start to shine when they take over the writing.

Thank you for your reaction. I like Thrill, it is a good song, and I think that if you want to understand Band Maid you need to have heard this song that is not typical of their current song writing but should be seen in the context - there are reasons why this video may have saved the band. I usually don’t suggest the official live video of the song Play but I think that it maybe fit your journey with the maids, and it is a great performance. If you continue with MV I suggest Blooming. Have fun! :)

That was song #1. The song that broke open the new gate.
You have such an incredible opportunity after hearing their very first song and their most recent. Let’s connect those dots!
I take great pride in offering song guidance to new listeners. This comes also with a super thanks for encouragement. The Band Maid catalog is over 125 songs with distinct eras, and incredible variety. Here’s my respectful, brief guide through the pigeonhole, with just ten songs:
We begin in the “Tiny Hat Era.”
    1. 2015, off only their 2nd mini-album, “Real Existence,” Zepp Tokyo live video. Still having songs written for them, but absolutely controlling the final product. Hard rock, pop sensibilities. This is a glimpse into why their live shows are so popular
    2. 2016. 3rd studio album. “The non-fiction days,” official music video. Alternative, post hardcore with some new tones.
    3. 2017. Finally, Kanami is writing everything with Miku providing lyrics. The Maids begin to spread their wings. Their 4th studio album will debut some legendary tracks. “Moratorium,” live video sets the stage for what’s coming.
    4. “Puzzle,” official live video. Same album, but completely different feel with the more bombastic, complex layers Band Maid will become known for.
    5. “Daydreaming,” a single released in 2017 and a completely different genre for Band Maid. Uptempo alt-pop rock/ballad? They have depth.
    6. World Domination Era begins! Tiny Hat has been retired. 2018’s studio album is a watershed moment. New outfits. New gear. “Domination,” official live video. This is the gateway most reactors take because the Maids rearranged and extended the studio track and laid waste to the audience.
    7. “DICE,” official music video. World Domination continues with straight up rock and one of the best bass solo handoffs to guitar solo of all time.
    8. “Onset,” official live video, from a limited edition DVD of 2019 album “Conqueror.” The Maids are serious musicians. They make instrumentals. Because they can.
    9. “Blooming,” official music video. Also in 2019, we hear new tones, more complexity, and the Maids experimenting with dynamic shifts and progressive elements. This song is top tier Maid.
    10. “From Now On,” from the 2022 EP “Unleash!!!!!” The opening salvo is another instrumental track. This one progressive heavy metal. Because they can. More experimentation with tones and we finally see that these Maids take no prisoners
This was NOT easy to do. I am leaving dozens of absolute bangers and legendary moments out. Band Maid’s “10th Anniversary Best Of” double CD has 30 tracks. Their most recent concert at Yokohama Arena was 3 1/2 hours long, 33 songs, and they had to schedule a follow up show to play the hits they left off the set.
However, this gives you an outline to work through the years with sample tracks of different styles and tones. Find some you really like and follow the small pigeon through your musical journey. 🎉 🚀

Why did you omit the ground-breaking album "Unseen World" 2021? This milestone should go #10 with jaw dropping kick-ass tracks like "Manners", "Black Hole", "Warning!", "No God", "Giovanni", and the rest of awesomeness. The album put them on the map for many hard-rock/metal heads, who have been hesitant to acknowledge Band-Maid as a living legend.

Misa's doing a lot of slapping here and in other songs too, but you'll also hear her doing picking and sliding in many Band-Maid songs. She's into funk style I guess, but a versatile player. I've seen a video of her doing bass tapping too. She should do it more in the future.

Another one finds their way to Band-Maid land. We hope you will stick around a learn more of the joy and thrill of Japan's hardest rocking women. (No disrespect to Lovebites, Aldious, and all the other woman rockers in Japan.)
As other fans have said, they have a large catalog of music. 98% of which they created themselves. Listen close and you will hear all kinds of influences.
Personal favorites are; Choose Me, Bubble, Arcadia Girl, Daydreaming and Before Yesterday.
edit: Yeah, and About Us. A tune they wrote for their fans during the plague years. But stands for being separated from any of your loved ones. Peace, Out.

Ah yes, the song that broke them to the world, right as their record company was in discussion of dropping them. (The first album flipped, an album designed entirely by their record company to be pop radio friendly, forcing out any input from the band.) This was actually the B side to another forgettable single handed to the band to record. Why don't these companies ever listen to their artists? Saiki, their singer said this song was the first time she was proud of something they'd gotten to record.
