    I appreciate how much seed-starting you do to have various size plants for the videos. Most of us get December and January off, but you're working hours on prepping for these videos. Again, I've followed your advice 100% and had nothing but success. It's fun when it all works!

    Love your channel - newish subscriber so I'm still working on some of the older videos - but wanted to say that I received the seeds I bought from you - quick delivery, good packaging, nice amount of seeds per packet. Looking forward to growing them this year. Your matter of fact, but encouraging tone combined with your clear "how to" makes the learning easy and makes it seem possible for me to achieve great results, too (the bulk method of planting tomatoes has revolutionized my spring planting craziness!). Thanks so much!

    Thanks for this. I over-seeded my Shasta Daisies quite a bit. I wasn’t sure if I need to thin them out or just wait and divide them when I pot them up. I’m so glad you showed that process.

    I really injoy watching your videos. Do great work and explain things well. I’ve always been interested in growing vegetables in a garden and have always had something every year. My papa always had big gardens and grew a lot of stuff every year until he passed. Watching your videos have got me back into it more and really helped me out with seed starting indoors and all the ins and outs. Thanks for all your videos and good information.

    Gary, this is a super timely and helpful video for me! I really appreciate how “budget friendly” your methods are - it allows me to experiment more without feeling bad when some of the stuff doesn’t work out. I laughed when you said “they won’t even notice they have been torn”. Btw, I have a page in my garden log called “Gary-isms” where I add important teachings from you. “No need to be gentle” from this video is going to make it there. My favorite one is “Pests & Diseases are not your fault” (especially because my first-year garden was ravaged with both this year and I was blaming myself for all of it). Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge!

    You definitely have a gift for growing plants! I tried starting flowers last year and most of them never germinated. I hope I can have more success this year. I wonder why you used seed starting mix when you transplanted? Don’t the seedlings need more nutrients than that?

    this may be an odd question... it's May in Middle TN and I would like to start the exact seeds that you have shown here in this video now, to plant in fall (fall is a great time to plant in the south)... do you think they will germinate? I know that some things have problems germinating when it's too warm, so should they be started inside? What would be too warm for germination?
    Thanks for the video....very informative!!

    • @IneffableFoxy
      @IneffableFoxy 2 роки тому

      I'm in Kentucky and last year I germinated my perennial seedlings in a greenhouse (just a fan running to cool things off) in May and June and by fall they were ready for potting in individual 4"' pots. I overwintered them outdoors and they bloomed the following spring - good healthy plants.

    Gary do you have to use a heat mat and a clear dome, to start the germination? ALso, do you fertilize the soil that you started the seeds in?

      I never use a dome as it found it breeds fungi. I use a heat mat for peppers.

    Hi there, I just watched your video on managing fungal diseases. I always have powdery mildew on my zucchini and yellow crookneck squash each summer. Something was going wrong with my lilac leaves too last spring/summer. So I bought some cooper fungicide to use in my yard this year. My question is this, can I spray everything and soil too to prevent diseases when it gets nicer weather outside? I live in Northern Utah. Oh and my peonies get powder mildew too.

    I am in MD. (A neighbor to you) We are still having 30 - 40 degree days and as low as teens at night. I have many sprouted plants under grow lights. Is it too cold to start putting them out for a short time to get sun? We are also not getting much sun, cloudy, windy and cold. I want to start more, variety under my grow lights. Should I just go and get a few more grow lights?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 роки тому +1

      Nope. If it is over freezing during the day it is fine. It might slow them down a tad but I think it is good for them to get UV rays early and use to the sun when young. It is really good to do for you cool weather crops as it keeps them from getting tall and leggy. Ill be doing a video on that. Id get more grow light too. LOL. I am assuming your plants are still kinda of small. They need more indoor care right not. Once a good size you can do more outdoors.

    Since it's already warm out, is it still better to start them indoors?
    Or should I just plant them outside?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 роки тому

      Well in flats outside is easiest as you can care for them in a flat or inside. They can take a while to grow as seeds. Dont let them sit in trays outside in full sun. Morning sun for 4 or 5 hours is best.

    My parents owned a commercial growing company that supplied big box retail. For perennials you can get near 100% germination starting them In a cold frame. Many perennial seeds need periods of warm and cold, plus moist stratification to optimize germination. If you don’t have a cold frame, most perennial seeds can easily be directly down in the fall, just make sure you clearly mark what you’re planting. That will allow you to weed accordingly. Otherwise this method could be a nightmare. Still a very simple an viable option for those that don’t wish to mess with potting. Poppy seeds are best planted in the dead of winter thrown on the ground where you want them to grow. They do not transplant well. Most seed packages leave off proper planting details for cold stratification. Not properly stratifying seeds can lead to poor germination, or no germination. That also means cold WET stratification, it’s rarely as simple as just putting the seed packet in the refrigerator. This is also why many home gardeners give up on perennial seeds.

      I know this is a year old, but I want to start seeds in a cold frame, and I have no idea how. The cold frame I have will be located outside in my backyard. Can I still start seeds in there during the winter? Will it stay warm enough? The cold frame I’m buying is kinda small. Would I still need to put a dome over top of the seed trays? I’m in Texas and although it doesn’t stay cold for very long here, it does get cold and we’ve had at least one bad snow storm per year since 2020. Thoughts?

    Do you use organic seed?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 місяців тому

      Pretty much all seeds are organic. You cant have an inorganic seed. All organic means is a processed type fertilizer wasn't used in the soil for at least 3 years. And that no sprays like a fungicide was used on the seed. The later is rare and if done the spray is brightly colored like green or pink. So lol, I just used seeds and wont pay extra for something stamped organic. I got to visit a seed company and see what had to be done to say its organic. It was quite silly to be honest.

    I'm in the middle of buying flower seeds for this year, and I'm stumped by something. The seed packets will say that a flower is an annual even though those types of plants are supposed to be hardy in my zone. Can the cultivar really determine whether a plant is an annual or a perennial?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 роки тому

      How they handle a freeze matters. Some are tender perennials which mean in my zone theyd be annuals because the can take cold in the teens. Many annuals left with great temps just keep growing. They also flower and seed a lot.

      Yes the cultivar sometimes determines if a plant is annual or perennial. There are many families of plants but not every plant in that family has the same hardiness. So species and cultivar do play a role. There are other factors as well. The seed companies print up seed packets with info that is...well, not always complete or accurate. It is wise to do your own due diligence in researching what you are growing so that you have accurate information. Sometimes it is tricky because you'll see conflicting information. If you live in the south, and the flowers are hardy to zone 9, 10, etc. The seed packets may STILL say they are annuals because THEY ARE annuals in most of the country and will not survive. The packets are printed for general information for most locations. They aren't site specific. It would be too complicated for them to print tons of info for every situation. And space consuming on a small packet. I research my seeds and plants as much as possible before growing especially if I am not familiar with them. Hope this helps...

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      So in the series it talk about boiling water on you starting mix to kill off fungus gnats. Potting mix is usually premoistened and also has fungus gnats. If that isnt a worry, you can use it. It is pretty close. I use potting mix when I pot up outdoors or seed start outdoors. inside i am more careful.
