Oxalates in Plants and Kidney Stones- Relax!

  • The oxalates scare is the newest trend and its really annoying and screwing with people’s heads. Oxalates are not a problem with people that eat healthy and have properly functioning kidneys. If they were, Cara and I would have been in trouble twenty years ago. We’ve been eating massive amounts of kale for 30 years. By eating healthy I mean no animal products, refined flour etc. A recent study found there was no increased risk of stone formation with higher vegetable intake. In fact, greater dietary intake of whole plant foods, fruits, and vegetables were each associated with reduced risk independent of other known risk factors for kidney stones. This means we may get additional benefits bulking up on plant foods in addition to just restricting animal foods.
Plant oxalates do not increase oxalates in kidneys like animal products do
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
studies show people who get stones don’t eat more oxalates than those who don’t
    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17538...
People who eat more fruits and veggies tend to get fewer kidney stones
    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7140784/
Plant-based diets have been used for decades to treat kidney disease
    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2609333/
When researchers removed fruits and veggies from people’s diets, kidney stone formation went UP pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15569...
40 years of studies have shown meat eaters have much higher kidney stones because animal protein is really hard on the kidneys, in essence turning them to stone
    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24752...
The body even produces its own oxalates, which the body has trouble getting rid of if you don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables.
Common issues that mess up kidneys is meat and dairy, refined flour & processed carbs, calcium supplements, hormone therapy, stress, burned out adrenals, coffee, black tea, alcohol, smoking anything. Lots of refined carbs and coffee lead to stones and NOT because of oxalates. What many people think is oxalate issues is actually too much calcium.
There is a microbe naturally found in the body that eats oxalates. Antibiotics kill this microbe. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... Healthy gut flora probiotics can easily break down oxalates if working properly. But most people have compromised gut health from bread, sugar, dairy, alcohol etc. What is the main food source of gut probiotics? Raw Plant fiber. Not cooked plant fiber- RAW plant fiber. What DECREASES oxalates? FIBER. Plant foods. Animal products have zero fiber. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
What else breaks down oxalates? Citrates. As in citrus fruit. Not orange juice, but whole fruit, including the bioflavonoids found in the pith and rind of citrus fruits. • How to Consume WHOLE L...
Two of the biggest contributors is to calcium-oxalate kidney stones are calcium pills and commercial vitamin C. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15579... and pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23381... People think they are doing good taking those when in reality they are forming kidney stones- ESPECIALLY if they are also eating meat, bread and sugar- the 3 hardest things on the kidneys. Commercial synthetic ascorbic acid vitamin C is made in a lab by combining corn starch and sulfuric acid- this synthetic vitamin C turns into oxalates in the body. WAY different than the natural vitamin C complex found in plants.
Seriously though, that my friend is the key… having a clean healthy body functioning the way nature designed. Not one poisoned with bread, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes, animal hormones and cholesterol, medication, calcium pills, synthetic vitamins, comfort food, donuts, pasta, cream sauce, beer, fried chicken wings, pork rinds, Cheetos, cereal, cookies, bagels and cream cheese.

I had my first kidney stone when I was in my early 20s, and my second when I was 28. My diet back then was cheeseburgers every day, Mountain Dew, Coca-Cola, milk, pizza, tacos and pastries. My doctor told me to stay away from orange juice. LOL. I rarely ate any fresh fruit or vegetables. Now I am 50, and vegan, and I get my urine tested twice a year. Every time I go, they tell me my kidneys are fine. Back in my 20s, they told me my kidneys had a lot of calcification, and I would have repeated kidney stones. Apparently, switching to plant- based diet has helped flush out my organs and restore them to better health.

Hi Marcus my husband had massive kidney stones and had several procedures to get rid of them and never ate a vegetable in his life. The good news is he got cancer. I know some people will read this and say that's the good news? Yes because he figured out after years of not listening to anybody that what he was eating was killing him. Although he was underweight and he thought him being send he was healthy he had cancer. He was diagnosed in 2017 and we did every alternative therapy we could find the first one was putting him on a raw vegan diet. We worked with the awesome nutritionist and although the cancer didn't go away the raw vegan diet detox and prepared his body for the other Therapies. Since December of 2019 he's been cancer-free and still is on the raw vegan diet. No more kidney stones no more sinus infections. Thank you so much for this information.

In 3 years after becoming vegan I went from 6 to 1 kidney stone (previous analyzed stones were oxalate). One of these "passed" 😖, the rest apparently dissolved. 7 years on I still have the one small stone. During this time, especially the early years my oxalate intake increased drastically in the form of spinach smoothies. Hope that helps!

Yes! I had repeated kidney stones/infections in my teens and all the way through my twenties. I had one so large that it blocked off part of my kidney and gave me e-coli poisoning - yeesh. I didn't eat much processed food then, but I ate lots of chicken, fish, dairy, eggs. I was told to cut back on oxalates - that did nothing. When I switched to a vegan diet they completely disappeared - my doctor was shocked to say the least. I eat TONS of leafy greens now - no stones! Great video!

My fathers Spanish and the first food I remember eating was black beans and rice, which I still eat to this day. Seems most of the foods Ive eaten all my life are on the "Foods high in oxalate list". Beets, berries, chocolate, cranberries, dark leafy greens (KALE!) nuts, spinach, sweet potatoes, and a lot of wheat bran as a child If oxalates caused kidney stones I'd have had them by now. I never heard the word 'oxalate' until a couple years ago and when I did it's as if Gundrie was telling me personally that all my food choices my entire life have been wrong! I completely disagree!

Right on the money except for "bodybuilders and house cats". Bodybuilders, yes, but house cats are getting kidney failure from the dried cat food - grains and no water content in that stuff. Cats will do fine on raw meat since they are carnivores, unlike us.

hi marcus. thanks for this post!! you often confirm the direction i have been heading with care for my body. doctors would have killed me 20 years with their plans. i had constant infections and the antibiotics were killing me. the "cure" they suggested involved putting a cathiter into my heart for injections of more antibiotics. I remember listening to the doctor say this. I said nothing and left. on the way home all i could think was, no fucking way!!! I felt that part of the problem was living in a wet cold climate with too much mold and not being used to it. so i bought a camper and left. drove around for 2 years looking for a better spot to live. but what really saved me was rejecting the doctors and all their drugs. just making a stand for myself made me get stronger. I am still working on this. I eat organic and natural. i prepare most everything i eat. no glutin, dairy. I started meditation and that was a big leap forward in my health. made a bigger difference than anything else. I love how you give us the correct information regarding diet and health. doctors are trained to prescribe drugs and nothing else. they have no training in healthy living. I go for check up to see how everything is going, but i make my medical decisions. I am 69, healthy, no drugs, and no gray hair yet. thanks for all the great info and recipes! you and Cara are amazing and i am happy your videos have become a part of my life.!!!

Thanks for the information. I’ve had kidney stones and may still have them. And yes, on the standard American diet until about a week ago. I too was afraid of oxalates because when you have kidney stones they put you on a diet which excludes so many plants. Going raw vegan as of 2 days ago. Watched the video on how Cara preps her legumes. Going to try that today. I love beans and legumes but have always cooked them. Beginning to come up with some delightful recipes by watching the ingredients you and Cara use. Wow! Never thought plants could taste this good raw. I was diagnosed with suspected kidney stone after a series of urinary tract infections that would keep recurring despite repeated rounds of antibiotics. I researched it and found dairy as the culprid which rang true to me because I had eaten a lot of dairy in the months before because a neighbor scared me into eating more protein because I had turned vegan and she insisted I needed more protein. I immediatedly stopped eating any dairy and ate a lot of acidic fruits and a lot of greens. Two weeks later the blood test showed no kidney stone and I have not had a urinary tract infection since. I have been vegan for years now and raw vegan for almost a year.

May I ask how long you did it for? Up to now most UA-cam comments only talk about positive carnivore experience. Time will tell though…

definitely one of your more informative videos. I look for these. I don't care about the low views - these info crunch ones with scientific papers help me out so much. I love being shoved in my face how little I know and told what I should.

Right On! Since I went Raw vegan a month ago I can't believe how my own husband and some family members have the need to point out every fear mongering article to counsel me with---- and just last week the kidney stone thing was brought up. What is their problem? I ask honestly. It's weird how people react to me now as they eat breads ,cookies, and meat. They lecture me how unhealthy my diet is as they do "zero" research! Yet still have the idea they are in a place where they can actually instruct. Ooops sorry for the rant but sure needed to get it out of me haha. Thank you for righteous info

My mother, who is now 74, also lectures me on my eating habits as a vegan, while she still eats cheese, meat, etc. It is strange that the people who willingly eat things that corrupt their own health give advice to people about proper nutrition.

Don't put meat in the same line as sugars. Otherwise all carnivores in the nature would be sick. And don't call McDonald's burgers meat product, because it's junk

Thank you do much for this Markus I have been waiting you did not disappoint. It is very important to spread this POV. I find Dr you know who the Lectins are a really issue along with fruit fear. No fruit all sugar is bad including moderate use of fruit for breakfast or lunch. I think there is a balance between veggies and fruit for sure but this no fruit whatsoever is crazy. Would love it if you could do a like video on these topics. PS I have not purchased the Kidney formula I am big on Green, Vitamin C and Night formula. I really have been wanting to get the Liver formula but perhaps what I should do is get both. We all love you and Cara. God bless ..

3:31 this is why I tell people it makes really little sense to use calcium to decrease the absorption of oxalic acid when if you eat lots of calcium and it goes into the body where the oxalic acid is - as well as absorbed - it just increases kidney stones, not decrease. People think so backwards on this.

Here I can fully agree with Markus. The problem is not the oxalate. If that were the case, I would have kidney stones a long time ago. I often get 10 grams of oxalates per day. It is important to eat vegetables and greens when raw! Once cooked, the oxalate acid breaks out of its compound! And then it can certainly become problematic.
