4x4 Forklift: Dana 70 Axles and Skid Steer Tires!

  • Another forklift followed me home, and this one is a 4x4. It's got a 4 cylinder, 4 speed, 4,000 capacity (maybe), and 4-wheel drive. I'm thinking of it as the 4xforklift...
    With Dana 70 axles on both ends and some kind of Ford 4-cylinder engine, it looks like it will be a great rough terrain forklift. That's just what I was looking for in a machine to move stuff around in the mine. Pretty much everything on it is worn out or broken, but that just means lots of fun in fixing it!

    That is a TCI H4m-50, 525A or 525B, the serial number is stamped on the top of the frame next to your left foot. Almost all parts and manuals are still available from Herculift Manufacturing in Schofield Wi. The 4-speed range transmission is a borg warner T-18 and the forward/reverse transmission is a borg warner T-72 velvet shuttle shift, the tee in the brake line is part of the clutch cut-out circuit also called an inching valve. When you press the brakes, a signal is sent to the cut-out valve in the transmission (solenoid operated) allowing you to decrease speed while maintaining full throttle. I would be happy to send you a diagram with part numbers if you want.

    Even if it's broken to heck and back, if you got it for only slightly over scrap value, AND he told you how bad it was to the point he bored you... that's (at least he sounds) an honest dude. Most sellers i deal with will resto-paint their trash and tell me a tale. It's gotten so bad that i've started saying asking if it's freshly painted so i don't have to drive over there and waste my time.

    You make my heart feel better. I bet the old forklift feels better also. When I was still working they had an old Hyster made in the 1940s. It sat in the back of the lay down yard for years at a time, but when needed our equipment mechanic would go fire it up and the job got done. Keep up the good work and don't get too fancy.

    • @benjamincresswell3713
      @benjamincresswell3713 8 місяців тому +2

      My sentiments too. I'd say for as little as he's going to use it, it's already better than it needs to be. Remember, you will never get back what you put in something like that, so only put in what YOU NEED it have. It's stopping good enough for working on the dirt at the new storage area. As for the lift rollers; unless they're real cheap and super easy to R&R they aren't going to wear much further for as little as he's ever going to use it. Just grease the slide. But, that's how I think. ben/ michigan

      engine could be a waukesha vrd220a, call Herculift manufacturing and give them serial number to find out what you have. A lot of those waukesha diesels were swapped out with more common motors. Any 4 cylinder with a SAE 3 bell housing will swap easily

      It is a VRD220A, I bought a John Deere diesel to put in, only to find it was a bit too wide, also need a custom flywheel setup as it has a 4 speed manual transmission with an automatic torque converter. I keep hoping to find a gas version and use the engine block as they are the same.

    Just rebuilt one of these Dana 70 closed knuckle axles. Turning angle aside they're great and very, very strong. The top of the kingpin should have a bronze bushing, but if it's worn you can replace it with the tapered roller bearing from the bottom of a Dana 60 kingpin axle, which will also fit the bottom of the 70's kingpin in addition to its top. The closed knuckles should be lubed with "corn head grease". Given how many loose bolts there were, be sure to check the torque on the spindle-to-knuckle bolts. There are only five, they're a fine thread, and they're threaded into cast. You can tighten em down and use red loctite, or preferrably, drill them out and drive in studs from the inside of the knuckle. May need to spot face it though if you go with studs.
