As a martial artist who carries a pocket knife, people always assume it's for knife fighting. When they ask if I've ever had to use it, I like to say "yes, this morning I'm fact......to cut open an Amazon package." Freaks them out for just a second. And can sometimes lead to a nice realization that no object is inherently a weapon.
I mean, some objects are inherently weapons. A hand gun is inherently a weapon; as is a sword. You're not generally using those for utility; you could, but that's not their express intention.
@jaykwonzzz I have owned firearms for decades and never used one as a weapon. Target practice, competition, sure. They are only weapons when someone applies THEIR own will to make them one. The object itself has no will, it can be defined only by the beholder's will.
@@bbasiaga well said my friend a five foot chunk of 2x2 lumber could be used as a weapon. But as it sits in my garage in the corner it's not looked at as a weapon or can do anything harm on it's own.
@@bbasiaga Incorrect. There is intent behind the creation of an item as well. I am not attributing will to an inanimate object. To suggest an object like an AR or a sword are built for any other reason that primarily a weapon is just ignoring facts. Go read the history of the AR-15 or the AK-47 and tell me those objects aren't inherently weapons. Any peripheral use is either practice or simulated combat (shooting competitions are absolutely simulated combat). It's like saying brass knuckles or slapjacks aren't inherently weapons because you can own them for novelty purposes, or that an expandable baton isn't a weapon because you can also use it to bust out a window. What about a taser? How is that anything but a weapon?
Since I got my first knife as a boy, I've always carried one. It's an essential tool. Can it be used as a weapon? Sure. Then, almost anything can. I use my knives every day for various cutting tasks. A knife is much more than a weapon.
Same here mate, in our grandparents time every gentleman carried a knife for its utility, unfortunately society now frowns upon it but I still carry and use one every day.
Me too. I was given a long folder ( 4") as a promotional gift in junior high; it carried perfectly next to my wallet in my back pocket for years. As a carpenter/contractor for a couple of decades, I found I used a knife as much as I used a hammer. First tool to come out of the Stone Age? A knife, I'm guessing.

Like eight years ago, when I was still in college, I got really into knives. I had been carrying a pocket knife since I was around ten, and always liked them, but as a young adult I became obsessed with them. The different steels, blade geometries, handle designs, locking mechanisms, blade finishes… everything about knives was interesting to me. I even became obsessed with sharpening my own knives. I started with budget friendly Benchmades and Spydercos, until I landed my first job… I was buying 2-3 good knives per month, and soon built up a collection of incredible knives. Zero safe queens; all users. This went on for a couple of years. As my career progressed, and as I grew as a father and a man, I stopped buying knives for myself. In the past three years, I’ve only bought two knives for myself; all of my other knife purchases have been gifts for family members and friends. I got into pews six years ago, and started only with a single handpew that I carried for a few years… then a couple of years ago I got into longpews… And though I still really enjoy my knives, I really do wish I would’ve collected pews and boolits before I spent thousands of dollars on my knife collection/obsession… Live, and learn!!

I am into guns, but as I live in Australia, I can't get one. I've been into archery since I was a teenager. Bow hunting has appealed to me, but you gotta know a guy to go hunting on a property. My shoulders are shot so archery is no good now. I have a large knife collection. I can't carry one regularly without a good reason. I would carry one out camping.
I carry a Spyderco folder (any one of 3 that I have) and keep a fixed blade in my pack that's with me at all times. Love the versatility & utility of knives. I'm never without one. I do agree that if you have gone to a knife for self defense, you're day just got about as bad as it can get 😱. Great vid Mike!
@clownishbehavior constitutional carry state, if you can legally own a weapon, you are automatically legally allowed to carry a concealed weapon. Other states, such as California where I moved from, you have to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The problem is they use the permitting in order to not allow a good citizen to carry a firearm to protect themselves. They create a back log, hold your rights, charge you a bunch of money, make you take off work to go the classes. Etc, etc...they basically use the laws in order to strip a citizen of the God given rights to self protection... you got it? Good question!
Good video Mike. "Speed goat" is a term actually referring to Antelope, native to Montana. They are among the fastest land mammals. They can run up to 40 mph.
I have many knives, but I have settled on my daily norm of what I find useful and comfortable. On the construction site I carry an ESEE Avispa or my Ontario Rat 1 in S35VN. In my EDC off-the-site I carry my Spyderco Paramilitary 2. I always keep my Victorinox Hercules (Swiss Army Knife) nearby even if it is not "on me." I also keep my BK62 Kephart knife and PKS Scorpion in my vehicle just in case I'm out-and-about and get stranded; I will have a couple good full-tang fix blades on me.
I have a Clinch Pick for self-defense. I don't expect to ever use it in that situation, but it's a cool tool, and training with it adds a fun element to my wrestling and jiu-jitsu practice. It's intended to be a space-maker so that I can access my pistol or OC spray, and that's how I train with it. As an EDC tool, I carry a very basic, very cheap, folding utility knife that uses a disposable blade. Most of the stuff that most of us are cutting on a regular basis are paper/cardboard covered with tape or glue, and that stuff gunks up a blade. I don't want to clean that regularly, or worry about keeping it sharp. I'd much rather just toss out a blade and replace it. Now, I do keep a good fixed-blade knife in my truck, in my office, in my house, in my shop... places that I regularly spend time, and am typically close to. If I'm in a role that makes sense to have a knife all the time, I do, and I select the tool that makes the most sense for the job I'm out to do.
One tip I learned from the Tactical Rifleman channel was to replace the sheath clip on my EDC fixed blade with heavy duty zip ties. You just run your belt through the loop and it keeps it high and tight against your waist.
I was born and raised in the most fk up places, gang infested neighborhood, I've seen people get shot and killed, I've seen someone breathe their last breath. I switched to carrying fixed blades everyday once I moved to a more knife lenient state. I usually carry an Esee Izula in S35v or the 1095 version or the Esee 3 or CR 2.5 a Leatherman or Victorinox, a light and a pistol but I have switched to just using a Garmin Instinct watch... I have one dress watch that gets worn once or twice a year but its the Garmin everyday.
Gotta love the knifes, I always carry two, strong hand is usually 3 1/2" folder spring assist, really used for opening boxes and such. The weak hand is a ESEE PR4 it is a 4 " fixed blade, thin handle profile which contributes to concealment ability. I carry it on the left side inside the waistband, it draws easily when pulled forward and downward to clear the shirt. I orginally carried it appendix left side opposite of my handgun which is right side appendix. The problem I found when I would draw my blade from concealed appendix with my weak hand to, (let's say to defend my handgun), there was a sewing machine effect when trying to clear the shirt. I would first draw the knife upward, the knife would get caught under shirt having to then go downward to clear the shirt, then upward to handle the threat. This becomes very dangerous with a sharp blade in the groin area in a confortation under stress. For me the left side carry is very comfortable, and conceal-able, as long as I do not grab any shirt on the draw, it is one smooth motion. Just to clarify, I draw the knife with the blade inward , tip down, this allows me to just use a gross movement of drawing the knife, then going upward and coming down and pulling inward over the opponents wrist, or hands. The reason I choose the ESEE PR4 is because of its ability to be more than just a defense blade, it also plays a roll for camp, skinning, bushcraft, or whatever, and for me it has a classic feel. Is it for everyone, well no, but for me the design contributes to ease of carry, so I alway have it on me. So why carry a defensive knife? Well first a defensive knife should be a fix blade, why? Try and draw a folder with the weak hand, if someone grabs your gun in the holster, or when you have drawn it and can't get that shot off. It is slow at best, if not impossible in an actual conflict. If you have ever been in a situation where someone attacks and tries to take your weapon, it can be extremely quick, so quick that your just trying process what happened. Split seconds matter, training matters, and proper equipment matters. For me I never plan on getting into a knife fight, it is just used to get my gun in use if needed. In all reality getting the opponent of my gun with the knife, most likely will be end of the fight. Just my two cents. Great video, nessisary subject matter, thanks for sharing.
A knife is essential. Best response to the question, “do you have your knife” belongs to Ben Napier of the tv show Home Town. “I’ve got my pants on, don’t I?”
I hate knives with Paracord wraps. I can immediately tell a person doesn't use their knives when they recommend or say they like Paracord wrapped handles.
Colonel Blade folder. Where I live/work concealed carry isn’t legal. I determined that the Colonel Blade Folder is the most natural (all one essentially has to do is hold it and throw punches) last resort self-defense blade I could carry… thankfully all I do with it though is open boxes. May it ever be so. 🙏 I have several others as many of us do. I use something different when upland hunting to clean birds, and always have a Victorinox Swiss Army Trekker on my person or in my EDC bag and switched out the toothpick for a little ferro rod that fits in that slot.
with respect, a lot of cops have never been in a gun fight, a lot of military have never been in a gun fight, and a lot of people who train knife fighting have never been in a knife fight lol. That includes people in the philippines. Still useful knowledge. People who teach shooting fundamentals or compete in competitions may or may not have been in gun fights (but probably unlikely), but still valuable lessons.
I have a question so my line of work I am a security officer for a hoteland I am in the army. For the hotel we can't carry around a rifle or a pistol. What knife can I carry for self defense and for utility that I can also strap when I go to my military drill?
Thank you mike, for only talking about SIG and Glocks and other firearms like everyone else can actually afford them, all while putting down the "self defense" knife community.
I been into knives as long as I can remember. Great spread there Mike some of my absolute favorites on the table. Just need to add that MKC to the tool kit. I didn't know you guys had a blur model going to have to add one of those to my collection 🤘🤙✌️
I am a truck driver. Company policy forbids firearms. Carrying a blade is one of my only alternatives. You play the cards you're dealt. I feel much safer with my quick release folding blade. I never want to use it, but it's nice to know it's available in a second.
I carry an Esee 3 every day. I have no use for a "fighting knife" as I am not going to get into a knife fight. I own several folders from companies such as Spyderco, Benchmade, Andrew Demko, OKC, Kershaw etc. and I switch those out from time to time. I also own 6 Esee knives for different uses but I always carry my Esee 3 as I prefer a small fixed blade belt knife. There is not a day that goes by where I don't use my knives. Like you, I have a gun for protection and I NEVER go anywhere without it on me.
I have a Winkler Belt Knife Crusher for my end of the world carry. I, also, have a Blackwater Grizzly. I carried a CRKT M16 which I loved and I really like the tanto, but I lost that because I didn’t tighten the screws for the clip. I’ve been looking at benchmade, Emerson, and even some Spartans to replace it.
i never leave my house without my pocket knife , Recently i got introduced to the CRKT Tuna and i got the compact. for a guy with big hands i upgraded to the full size one and i carry that knife everywhere. its a budget friendly knife and recommend it to anyone. I do have a fixed blade knives but since i appendix carry the fixed blade is just uncomfortable for me.
ESEE/RAT, speedgoat are good when you’re doing heavy tasks all day. EDC is about where you are too. Most of the time a 938 or 43 and a leatherman is all you need and more in a relatively safe city.
Thanks for your service. Also a veteran. We fought to give us the freedom to waste 9 minutes of our lives on videos like this. I mean I liked it, but it was just semi useless information unless you’re a teenager and if you are, you probably got gifted a pocket knife or got someone to buy you one at Walmart/have a knife set for hunting. I like everything on that table though. Really not trying to hate, but this seems more like an advertisement than anything
Big knife nerd, and even bigger steel nerd. I rotate depending on what is sharp, right now it's the Para 2 that I bought back in 2014. I would definitely say that my Benchmade Super Freek is my favorite though, kinda a pain to sharpen though. I have a Kershaw Cinder Cu that stays on the keys along with a micro flashlight that takes a AAA and puts out about 90 lumens (had a micro rechargeable but it wasn't as reliable).
I'm probably around 200 knives again. However, I carry the same 3 every day. A little SAK Manager in one pocket, a serrated SAK Trekker in my watch pocket, and a flipper in a slim side cargo pocket. Each has a purpose and mall ninja ain't it. The basic survival kit in the vehicle has a fixed blade and in the front console another Trekker, plain blade this time. Oops, forgot the slim, Muela Fury friction folder on the back of the pouch in my cargo pocket. It looks like a fancy Lagouile, but it's actually just a gilded friction fit. That is the really important one. It's for food targets of opportunity. Somebody has some summer or dried sausage that needs cutting, some steaks, fresh fruit, etc. Share and I am there to assist. LOL.
Man I felt the part about losing knives. I actually lost that same Kershaw (Blur) he has there, AND the Kershaw Leek as well. Thats one reason I am hesitant to get a Microtech, Benchmade, or Emerson for EDC. Im scared I will lose them. I clip my knives to the pocket and still wind up losing them. Must not be doing something right....
I have a couple Civivi folders and an SRK-C. (And I was looking at bushcraft knives recently.) Most areas near me limit pocket knives to 3" or 3.5". I think open carry of fixed blades is legal if they're visible. If knives are going to have restrictions like guns, why doesn't a carry permit also cover knives? If I can carry 44 magnum, why can't I conceal a 6" fixed blade knife? The injustice!
I really want to know what Mike has for the Winkler & Stryder that he carried into combat. I recently picked up a CRKT HZ6 for armed security work & have it on my vest. While I wish it was more of a 5-5.5" vs 6.5" blade it's just a solid purpose built knife.
Carry anything American and you’re good. I’ve gotten into Half Face Blades and love their crow and disaster profiles, they range from in price from the MKC/Amtac prices to the moon. Cheers y’all
When it comes to folding knives you can’t go wrong with a Spyderco para 3. And for fixed blade bushcraft knives you would be hard pressed to go past Esee. Not to mention the warranty is second to none.
I’m a regular friendly Filipino guy. I’ve been threatened with a knife twice here. On both times, I made a tactical retreat (ran). Plot twist, I was also armed with a knife but did not engage. Best self defense after a verbal argument is to think about you future. Haha.
Recently in CA. Statistics there show that in the last 2 years twice as many people are attacked by knife wielding assailants than by assailants with guns. PACE makes sense. Having said that a knife in close for most beats combatives and a pistol. Most edc blades like combat knives are going to be relegated to mundane chores until they are not. Most people are never going to use a CCW pistol or knife...but I feel better having them both. And yes I've had to use one in a violent encounter.
Saw a video a couple ago where the poster (who is a former servicemember, now knife maker) said that folding knives are a really bad idea for self-defense. He said he's literally seen the knife fold and cut the owner's fingers while they were trying to defend themselves. Folding for utility, fixed for self-defense.
For utility, I use my multi tool. In my 'Go Bag" I have and old Vietnam era pilots survival knife. Then my old trusty Buck folder I keep in my pocket. If I had a dollar for every knife I've lost...
ABOUT A WEEK AGO, A MAN, BEHEADED HIS EX IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, IN FRONT OF HER HOUSE WITH THEY SAID, SOME TYPE OF SWORD... Gerber, Cold Steel has one of the STRONGEST locking system folding knives out there.

What kind of clip do you have on it for iwb? just got a civic i fixed blade and want to change the tech clip that comes with it
A knife is essential. Best response to the question, “do you have your knife” belongs to Ben Napier of the tv show Home Town. “I’ve got my pants on, don’t I?”
I never go out without my Glock 19X and my Spartan Blade Knives.
I have several others as many of us do. I use something different when upland hunting to clean birds, and always have a Victorinox Swiss Army Trekker on my person or in my EDC bag and switched out the toothpick for a little ferro rod that fits in that slot.
300 for a blade is wild.
Camera had a mind of its own
Appreciate the continued information and always great thoughtsto consider. God bless Mike!
You should check out T.Kell Knives. He’s a former Marine. Good dude and makes the best blades I own.
Great video and absolutely love ESEE knives. Own several and they are amazing.
The Kershaw Covalent is my choice of EDC!
with respect, a lot of cops have never been in a gun fight, a lot of military have never been in a gun fight, and a lot of people who train knife fighting have never been in a knife fight lol. That includes people in the philippines. Still useful knowledge. People who teach shooting fundamentals or compete in competitions may or may not have been in gun fights (but probably unlikely), but still valuable lessons.
The nice thing is they never run out of ammo.
That Speed Goat even SOUNDS sharp in the video. I'm gonna have to check that company out.
Speed goat. greatest of all time
One is none...two is none...Bro is speaking the truths! I swear, as the MULE of the team you can't have enough backup mags or first aid kits.
Had the same coffee this morning 💪🏻
I been into knives as long as I can remember. Great spread there Mike some of my absolute favorites on the table. Just need to add that MKC to the tool kit. I didn't know you guys had a blur model going to have to add one of those to my collection 🤘🤙✌️
I greatly appreciate your perspectives.
Excellent presentation!
I always have two lights both sure fire, one on my glock 19 and one in my pocket for utility
I am a truck driver. Company policy forbids firearms. Carrying a blade is one of my only alternatives. You play the cards you're dealt. I feel much safer with my quick release folding blade. I never want to use it, but it's nice to know it's available in a second.
Nice watch choice - I always thought you had some watches that looked like Sinn. iykyk.
Great real knife edc talk ! Thanks
Mike Glover for President 2024
I carry the Benchmade Nimravus and the Benchmade SOCP Dagger. My edc pistol is the Glock 29 Gen 4
Hey mike what kind of jackets is that thanks
SUPER COMMON SENSE VID!!!
I've carried an esee izula every day for the last 15 years or so. It's a work horse.
Great information
Esee makes stellar knives
Excellent thank you
This dude is smart like a goat
Mike Glover on the channel? Earned youself a sub
What Jacket is that?
I like the watch comparison, makes sense. Sinn is a legit watch choice as well. So is G Shock, but Sinn, c'mon!
ESEE/RAT, speedgoat are good when you’re doing heavy tasks all day. EDC is about where you are too. Most of the time a 938 or 43 and a leatherman is all you need and more in a relatively safe city.
Professionals have specialized tool preferences just like with any other industry/job.
Great Video! What Type of Kershaw are you using in the Video?
Benchmade, Spyderco, Chris Reeves also make good folders.
very well explained as always love your vids
What brand is the jacket?
COLD STEEL FOLDERS WITH TRI AD LOCKING SYSTEM when the blade is open its like a fixed blade
Which Winkler knife did you carry please?
Not to mention esee’s warranty. I believe says something like, put it in a vise and snap it and we’ll still send you a new one.
Does anyone know the knife from the thumbnail??
I dont understand how that happens, i clip mine to my pockets/belt and go out and skateboard and still have the knife clipped on me when i need it.
If you like that ESEE you will love a Bark River Bravo-1.
I'm not a certified badass like our friend Mike here, but I can agree if you're pulling a knife it is worse case scenario. I wear 2 at all times.
I EDC a esee izula 2 or a candiru depending on what I will be doing. If I'm in the woods or the like I carry a esee 4.
Love it 👌🏼
Esee knives are great i have a few. Spyderco is best folder that ive found and I buy a lot of folders.
Carry anything American and you’re good. I’ve gotten into Half Face Blades and love their crow and disaster profiles, they range from in price from the MKC/Amtac prices to the moon. Cheers y’all
Hard to beat a Swiss Army Knife.
Huntsman or Deluxe Tinker provides a number of useful tools and options.
Love the jacket Mike!
When it comes to folding knives you can’t go wrong with a Spyderco para 3. And for fixed blade bushcraft knives you would be hard pressed to go past Esee. Not to mention the warranty is second to none.
I feel like we need to get our good man a Hwando.
Could you do a video on the best watch for survival? If you haven't done one already
Hey Mike, what G-Shock do you wear?
I also have a topps unzipper for certain times. I used to carry a cold steel american lawman folder but I lost it and I only carry fixed blade now.
I’m a regular friendly Filipino guy. I’ve been threatened with a knife twice here. On both times, I made a tactical retreat (ran). Plot twist, I was also armed with a knife but did not engage. Best self defense after a verbal argument is to think about you future. Haha.
What were the names of the knives you carried in the military
Also what model numbers
Recently in CA. Statistics there show that in the last 2 years twice as many people are attacked by knife wielding assailants than by assailants with guns. PACE makes sense. Having said that a knife in close for most beats combatives and a pistol. Most edc blades like combat knives are going to be relegated to mundane chores until they are not. Most people are never going to use a CCW pistol or knife...but I feel better having them both. And yes I've had to use one in a violent encounter.
Kkk..in Brazil we also have machetes figth…anyway great considerations
You should get an absurdly huge
Cold steel for pranks
If you cant carry a gun, for protection/slf defense is a folder knife serviceable or would you rather a fixed blade?
Saw a video a couple ago where the poster (who is a former servicemember, now knife maker) said that folding knives are a really bad idea for self-defense. He said he's literally seen the knife fold and cut the owner's fingers while they were trying to defend themselves. Folding for utility, fixed for self-defense.
You show the Dynamis blade on the thumbnail, but don’t mention it? 🤔 Great EDC blade for SD
