    So...I'm not your intentended audience at all. I'm a mom, haven't carried a knife since doing tech work in high school, don't know a bit about kinds of knives. But here is what I get out of a video like this: men are different than women. And boys are different than girls. I was raised with girls, but my kids are all boys. Videos like this help me remember that my boys some day may want to learn effective self defence with a knife. And that it may include descriptions and moves that make me squeamish. But that if I do the hard work of training their character, then I don't need to see an interest like this as being "violent" or "toxic" like the culture would say. I see your intent to be self-controlled here. I don't see you being a show off, looking to intimidate or look macho. But the willingness to effectively use a tool to defend against an attacker with dark intentions...that is a good thing for a boy/man to want. And it is helpful for me to see it in a positive context like this. Thank you.

      To be a prep it costs an arm and a leg, it goes without saying that it is extremely exciting to have a lot of weapons and to being good at marcial arts tho. Karambit is great tiny knife for carrying to use in short distance fights, although the majority of its users are cs go players and just carry it for fun

    There are some good videos of Doug Marcaida demonstrating with the Fox 599 (same as this but with the traditional curved blade) and he recommends putting the ring between the first two joints of the finger (first being the one closest to the tip of the finger, not sure the technical term) so you can easily remove the finger. I have the 599 and several other karambits and I practice this way; it is very easy to keep retention with the ring (and be able to flip it forward for some nasty, sneaky techniques -- see the Marcaida videos or a Bastinelli video about the "blue worm" cut) but still be able to very quickly slip the finger out for safety/different grip.
    With my 599 I put on both pocket clips (mine came with an extra one and I think they all do) so I can quickly carry it for either a forward grip or an underhand grip.
    Also, I would personally never put my off side forward because it becomes an easy target. I prefer to put the knife forward and swipe at the nearest target, with the offhand arm up just in case I would need to block with the outside of the arm if something gets past my knife hand.

    Hey guys, I didn’t really know where to go and share this so I figured that this would be a good place.
    The WPS karambit likely saved my life a few weeks back.
    I’m currently a college student and I work at a Jimmy John’s part time to support my living costs. A few weeks ago on a Saturday night, I was getting off work but the one I work at stays open til 2am because it’s one of the only restaurants surrounded by all the college bars. I was walking to my car and realized there was a person hunched over by my car. I didn’t know what he was doing until I got a little closer. I figured out it was a drunk frat guy urinating on my vehicle. I politely but firmly told him to leave my vehicle, but he refused and then called his friends over from around the vehicle. 3 more people came over, and I made sure to say look guys I’m not looking for any issues, I just need my car. They continued to advance towards me and smirking to eachother about how “easy” this was going to be and I suddenly realized the gravity of the situation. If I get jumped, I could get really hurt or killed and I wasn’t concealed carrying because I had just gotten off work and I didn’t really know if my manager would allow that or not. Running would also be difficult through the maze of cars behind me and me being in my work shoes they would surely catch up to me. So I reached in my pocket and flipped out my WPS karambit. Didn’t wave it around or threaten anyone with it, just had it in my hand in case I got jumped by multiple attackers. The other guys stopped when they saw that it was now a fair fight, and actually at that moment 2 of my coworkers that were also leaving saw the other group trying to close the gap on me and ran over and shouted for them to leave or that we were going to call the police.
    Never would have thought that choosing a job at a sandwich restaurant could have almost gotten me in a situation like that, but I’m glad I got out alright.
    Really thankful to WPS as well as my coworkers who helped me out.

      I honestly don't see the appeal of a karambit folder. If you're putting yourself in a position for violence where a karambit is necessary for fighting, I'd think a fixed is more practical to draw, demploy, fight. For everyday "just in case" EDC, it's useless for any other task and the reality is, a regular knife will defend you near the same against an untrained opponent, which is 99.99% of who you'll encounter in everyday life. The 597 he's using in the video makes sense, it at least has a functional cutting edge. However I'd also opine that they're playing very loose with the term "karambit" just because it has a karambit ring.

  • @bayoubushcraftandsurvival8842
    @bayoubushcraftandsurvival8842 10 місяців тому

    Food for thought, the ring should be used because it is one of the reasons the karambit is so effective when extracting the blade from your target. Curved blades which is what the karambit is are not so much designed for slashing as they are for thrusting. Karambits cut from the inside out unlike most straight blades which cut thru slashing. Fixed blades have a tendency to get stuck between ribs and can be difficult to remove. The karambit due to its curved blade and its ring allows one to create tremendous torque and the karambit can free itself by rotating the blade by turning your wrist. Karambits can actually cut thru bone and there is video evidence to prove it. Sayoc kali is a great place to find this evidence. The straight blade karambit will not give you the advantages that traditionally curved blade karambits will. Also that ring is great for keeping your hand from sliding over the blade during thrusting. Last two points, karambits have rings, sabits do not. 2nd they were not farming tools. They originated in Indonesia and were developed for defensive use. Steven Tarani , Ernest Emerson and Doug Marcadia are good sources for karambit use. FYI, karambits were not known in the USA until Steven Tarani brought his knowledge of the weapon from Indonesia back to the states. Hope this helps.

  • @michael98277
    @michael98277 Рік тому

    This was great. I suggest taking a look at Michael Janich's Martial Blade Concepts. Not that getting stabbed is fun, but those guys focus on disabling the attacker physically, since stabbed people very often keep fighting. I went to his Blade Camp last month. There was at least one SEAL and one government security contractor training too. The focus is on what instantly stops an attack. Actual meat dummies were used to show the effectiveness of even a small blade. A doctor presented on the anatomy targets. I'm no fighting expert, but I think anyone that understands the rush of real combat wouldnt' be comfortable with a knife that you pull out with your finger in, then have to change your grip on to avoid injury. I also have difficulty with the idea of throwing a knife for defense. When you realize you're needing to do that they'll likely be up close, where throwing is not sensible. Further, once thrown, the knife is gone. Lastly, the likelihood of completely disabling a person with one stab is slim. People don't burst into flames when stabbed. Just review knife attacks caught on security cameras to see the truth in that statement.

    Nice watching this guy explain it and SO glad to see him pick the grip he would use because so many want to say hold it in a "traditional way" which actually isn't traditional at all. Absolutely love these, but after yrs of having them it is obvious they are best suited for t-shirt wearing attackers unless your going for the throat. I've yet to see anyone demo one going through a jacket with some layers under it by using any claw slashing strikes. So if you live in a warm weather all yr round area then carry it, if not then a thrusting blade is going to be better. AND the makers might call that a Karambit, but come on, it's basically a straight blade. The "finger ring" doesn't make a knife a Karambit.

    That style of blade is NOT a traditional Karambit style blade. Traditional Karambit blade design looks like a talon or a tiger claw which are designed pierce, stab, thrust, slash, cut and tear...you guys are fake! Do your research prior to posting inaccurate videos!

    I love wps but it's not organs, its arteries that need to be cut. Specifically it's the legs behind the ankles, knees and thighs and the arms like the wrist , forearm and under the armpits. A slice under the armpits causes bleeding that cant be slowed by a tourniquet.

    I prefer the smaller size since it has great mobility and is invisible so no one knows I'm carrying a knife. I often feel awkward when carrying a large knife and people look at me with cynical eyes, so the small size makes me feel more comfortable.

      You often hear the phrase "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight." While true, that can be reversed to don't use a gun in a knife fight. If you carry both, there are distances where a knife can be employed more easily to more affect than a gun. (Inside a couple of feet to contact distance.)
      Ideally, you use one or the other depending on circumstance and wouldn't deploy both simultaneously. Use the knife in close contact to break said contact and build distance then deploy the firearm. If it were a single attacker, you could also end the threat with the knife.

    one of the most frightening and perspective changing things my escrima teacher taught me was to think of the blade like a paint brush, and you're just trying to paint someone up. it's a tool of finesse, you don't need to muscle yourself through your strokes.

    A group of friends and I used to get regular tactical arms training and CQB as well as karambit. We were trained to use double edged karambit knives. The convex edge, when razor sharp, is perfect for slicing in a back and forth motion. The concave edge can be used to gut someone from groin or belly upwards. There are also a lot of techniques to use that concave blade to control someone. It's pretty scary to have that edge held along the curve of your neck, the inside of your arm, or your thigh or leg. Using a wrist lock and a karambit, you can really get your point across (pun intended).

      Because their knife has a straight edge, everything translates. But the longer the blade, the more you'd lean towards a traditional grip. The kabar is at the top length limit where you'd consider pikal.

    I know nothing, but invite me out. I will take a black magic marker and hold it regular knife style, while you take your best karambit trainer/fighter and have them hold their black magic marker as shown in this video. Within five minutes I will prove to you this is Hollywood and has no practical application. (Or very few real world advantages.) We must also wear white t-shirts. Go ahead, please try this out so that we don't "train" people incorrectly. I know this because I used to love and study this "advanced" fighting style, but reach is 10x more important.
